FFX Commentary On Larry Johnson Pick
Johnson’s holdout is a concern, but most holdouts involving elite runners get resolved before week one. For now, the holdout isn’t a huge concern — if it lasts a few more weeks, then we may start re-evaluating things. Until then, he is still our #2RB. Johnson has scored 40TDs over the last two seasons and has rushed for over 1,750 yards in each of his last two years. Keep in mind that he only started 9 games in 2005. Being that the still-young RB hasn’t even started for two full seasons yet at the NFL level, we scratch our heads when Sites consider him damaged goods.
Other FFX Observations
Brian Westbrook does have some injury risk attached to his name, who are we kidding? That said, he is falling way too far in early 2007 redraft leagues. Take advantage of this! If the running back drops to you anywhere near the 10-12 range, you’re getting tremendous value. Clinton Portis going to FFWhiz.com at 1.09 was a bit early given that his ADP is well into the middle of the second, but the runner is surely capable of scoring like a top 10RB, so the selection could just workout.

FFX Commentary On Chad Johnson Pick
It was tough to pass on a running back with our second-round pick, but we just weren’t happy with the runners left on the board at this spot in the draft. Chad Johnson was easily our highest ranked player available, so we took a gamble that a runner like Thomas Jones would fall to us in the 3rd. As you will see below, Jones did fall.
Other FFX Observations
Probably the biggest surprise in the second-round was Brandon Jacobs going to Rotoworld.com at 2.07. I know Jacobs is running 4.4 40s right now, and I realize that he has looked very good when given the chance to perform, but the bottom line is that the RB is 6-4 and weighs 264 pounds — I’m sorry, but a running back that size will not hold up if the Giants follow through with their plan of attack, which is to give Jacobs starter-type carries. Most of us on staff, especially myself, feel that Jacobs won’t last to mid-season with that kind of workload, so drafting him in the second round is quite a reach if you ask us.

FFX Commentary On Thomas Jones Pick
While Thomas Jones isn’t a flashy third-round pick, we firmly believe that the Jets’ runner will have a solid 2007 fantasy season. Jones could have a cup of coffee with the top 10RBs this year, so we were quite pleased to land him in the third-round.
Other FFX Observations
FantasySportsCentral.Com got great value out of their third-round pick (Reggie Wayne). Wayne is our #3WR heading into the 2007 fantasy season, so we consider this a steal for FantasySportsCentral. Past Wayne, the only pick that really stands out value-wise is JunkyardJake.com’s Carson Palmer selection. JunkyardJake landed the second best QB in fantasy football with the last pick in the third — given that QBs get 6 points per TD in this league, this will end up being one of the best bargains in this entire draft come week 16’s end.

FFX Commentary On Cadillac Williams Pick
We ended up trading Cadillac in a later deal, but the Tampa Bay rusher was a bargain near the end of the 4th. Gruden plans to use the back a ton in the passing game in 2007, so he really is quite a steal this late. We ended packaging Larry Johnson, Cadillac Williams and our 7th rounder for LaDainian Tomlinson and MonsterDraft.com’s 13th and 18th round picks. At this point in the draft, we are sitting pretty nice with LaDainian Tomlinson, Thomas Jones and Chad Johnson. We are one pick light through round 4, but it will payoff with the production that LaDainian Tomlinson will bring us.
Other FFX Observations
Probably our favorite selection in this round was RotoWorld.Com’s selection of Marques Colston at 4.07. People are going to doubt Colston in his second season, it is only natural, but this kid is NOT the next Michael Clayton. Clayton didn’t have Drew Brees tossing him the rock and he didn’t have a nasty rushing crew made up of Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister helping him see single coverages. Colston will again be Drew Brees’ main target and he should have a top 5-7 fantasy season for WRs in this scoring format.

FFX Commentary On Michael Turner Pick
Naturally we’re going to take some heat for selecting Michael Turner this high (5.03), but landing Turner is a must for Tomlinson owners in 2007. While we would typically wait until the 6th-round to grab L.T.’s back-up (which is still high for most people’s taste), this particular group of Site’s knows us far too well (from other leagues) — We didn’t want to chance it and lose Turner when our next pick was 19 selections away. We typically draft Turner in the 6th-round in almost every Expert Draft that we do, and probably the most common reaction we get is: why would you pass up on quality players that are available for a back-up running back? To best explain my answer, here are the players that were taken in order after our 5.03 selection (Turner): Reggie Brown, Ahman Green, Calvin Johnson, Jon Kitna, Tony Romo, Chris Chambers, Marion Barber, Jerious Norwood, Jamal Lewis, Braylon Edwards, Joey Galloway, Darrell Jackson, Matt Hasselbeck, Balitmore D, Bears D, Vernon Davis, Santana Moss, Mark Clayton. Of all of those players, who have similar values to us, Vince Young is easily our highest ranked player and we still were able to land him with our 6th-round pick. Only in a situation where the player pool is very equal do we suggest straying away from ADPs. What I mean is, if a player’s ADP is in the mid-4th (and you want that player), you want to grab that player just a bit earlier than he would normally go, but you do not want to stray far from his average draft position because then you are “reaching” for that player. Reaching means that you aren’t getting good player-value. While grabbing Turner at 5.03 goes against this thinking, we really don’t see how we lose any value given how even the player pool is this year in that 5-7 round range. Like we said, our #1 ranked player when on the clock at 5.03 was probably Vince Young and we still managed to get the QB with our 6th-round pick. Even if we waited on Turner until our 6.10 pick, we would have had Jon Kitna and Turner, or Chambers and Turner vs. Vince Young and Turner. I’m sorry, but there isn’t enough difference between any of these players (aside from Young, which we will talk about below) to risk losing Michael Turner. We took a lot of heat back in 2005 when we drafted back-up RB Larry Johnson in the 4th and 5th rounds of every expert league we did — while we don’t want a Tomlinson-injury to occur, if it did, this type of drafting could have just as much impact as our 2005 Larry Johnson selections did (especially in the league’s where we don’t even own L.T.)
Other FFX Observations
Not too many surprises in the 5th, as the player value started to go flat, but JunkyardJake.com’s 5.12 selection of Jamal Lewis might end up working out, and so could WalterFootball.com’s 5.11 selection of Jerious Norwood.

FFX Commentary On Vince Young Pick
Vince Young is ready to breakout in ‘07! We have Young listed as our #6QB in 2007 redraft leagues, ahead of both Donovan McNabb and Jon Kitna. Most people are going to tell you that Young’s weak WR crew will hold him back, but the QB didn’t have a great group to throw to last year, and he still managed to post decent passing totals for a rookie QB. Young’s rushing production is what’s going to help him finish inside the top 5-6 for fantasy QBs in 2007. We wouldn’t be shocked if he ran for 700 yards and racked up 10+ rushign TDs in only his second-season. In league’s that award 4 points per passing TD and 6 points per rushing TD, Young in a sense scores what is equivalent to 27 passing TDs (when compared to a non-running QB). And in league’s that award 1 point per 10 rushing and 1 point per 20 passing, if Young totals 700 rushing yards on the ground in 2007, that is equivalent to about 3,500 yards passing (compared to non-running QBs), and that’s if you only calculate Young’s passing yardage from last season (2,199). Again, we believe that Young is bound to improve on his passing numbers in 2007, but even if he didn’t, he is likely to rush for at least 600-700 yards and 10+ rushing TDs in 2007 — those numbers make him a fantasy monster at week 16’s end. He is well worth a 5-6th round selection on draft day in almost any scoring format.
Other FFX Observations
Not much impressed us in this 6th-round but maybe Rotoworld.com’s 6.07 Vernon Davis selection. Davis is our #2TE in redraft formats entering 2007. That’s right, I said #2TE in redraft formats. This guy is the next Antonio Gates and he has amazing value thus far in the off-season/preseason. Draft him as your starter in the 6-8 range and you could be sitting on one of the bigger 2007 fantasy steals.
