Smitty’s Week 5 Studs & Duds

Smitty’s Projections
QB Drew Brees
(vs. CAR)
345 passing yards, 3TDs, 0 INTs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football I know.. most of you are giving up on Brees, but I refuse. Brees is one of the most physically gifted quarterbacks in the entire league - Sean Payton will fix the problems going on in New Orleans and it will all start with the rushing game. Reggie Bush is going to have to step up with Deuce McAllister out for the season and I think he will step up in a big way. He may not get every carry, as the team will want to keep him actively involved in the passing attack, but expect the Saints coaching staff to figure all this out. Keep this in mind… Ronnie Brown looked like trash after two full weeks and now, after just two more games, he is an absolute stud and possibly a top 10 overall player looking forward. Things change quick in this league — Brees and that Saints passing attack will be just fine coming off their much needed bye.

Smitty’s Projections
RB Frank Gore
(vs. BAL)
45/30 yards, 0 TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football At least this game is in San Fran. That is about the only good news for Gore in this match-up. The 49ers are without quarterback Alex Smith, so they are forced to roll with Trent Dilfer at the position. Baltimore is going to destroy Dilfer and that 49ers offense on Sunday.

Smitty’s Projections
RB Larry Johnson
(vs. JAC)
140/20 yards, 2TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football Johnson has had some tough match-ups so far this season, not to mention that he didn’t get the touches in week one to even have a shot at producing solid fantasy stats. Well, Johnson’s schedule just got easier, so get ready for some production! L.J. faces the Jags in week 5, a team that ranks in the bottom 7 against the run. Even with the slow start, I rank Johnson inside my top 5 overall looking forward.

Smitty’s Projections
WR Braylon Edwards
(@NE)
3 rec, 35 yards, 0TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football The Patriots passing defense is tough. They only surrender 156 yards per game through the air, so don’t expect much from that Cleveland offense in week 5. Brady, on the other hand, should explode against that Cleveland passing defense, which ranks in the bottom 3 in the entire NFL.
Player

Smitty’s Projections
QB Ben Roethlisberger
(vs. SEA)
275 passing yards, 3TDs, 0 INTs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football Roethy is a great start almost every week. He is that sneaky QB that most fantasy owners cannot afford to start because they have a slightly better QB on their roster. This puts fantasy owners in a tough situation, because Roethy really deserves a starting fantasy gig. He has a nice schedule, especially this week against Seattle. The Seahawks are just an average passing defense, so expect Big Ben to expose the Seattle unit in a major way. FWP should have a nice rushing game as well in this contest.
Player
Match-Up
Smitty’s Projections
RB Brian Leonard
(vs. AZ)
45/8 yards, 0TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football The Cards are playing extremely tough on the defensive side of the football right now, so I don’t see that Rams offense doing much at all on the ground in week 5.
Player
Match-Up
Smitty’s Projections
RB Marion Barber
(@BUF)
105/30 yards, 2TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football Barber has a great match-up in week 5, as he faces Buffalo. The Bills are 27th in the NFL against the run, giving up over 140 rushing yards per game. This will be the Marion Barber show all day long!
Player
Match-Up
Smitty’s Projections
WR Torry Holt
(vs. AZ)
4 rec, 55 yards, 0TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football If Bulger were playing better (and healthy), I’d be tempted to project some bold numbers for Holt, but since the Cards are playing so well on defense, I just don’t see the WR going off.

Ballgame’s Week 5 Studs & Duds

Player
Match-Up
Ballgame’s Projections
QB Vince Young
(vs. ATL)
220 passing yards, 3TDs, 0 INTs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football Young is looking better every week and I think he is going to take his game to that next level. It will all start at home against the Falcons this week.
Player
Match-Up
Ballgame’s Projections
RB Warrick Dunn / Jerious Norwood
(@TEN)
65 total rushing yards, 0 TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football The Tennessee rushing defense is only giving up 63 yards per game, which is 2nd in the NFL, so don’t expect much from either Dunn or Norwood in week 5.
Player
Match-Up
Ballgame’s Projections
QB Drew Brees
(vs. CAR)
330 passing yards, 3TDs, 0 INTs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football New Orleans looks awful, but I think Reggie Bush getting a promotion is going to stir things up in just the right way. Bush is going to have 2TDs on Sunday and Brees will score three times, one will be to Bush. There are too many weapons on that team, I’m not buying into this poor play lasting long.
Player
Match-Up
Ballgame’s Projections
WR Clinton Portis
(vs. DET)
55/10 yards, 0TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football I was starting to believe that Portis was back to being that elite running back, but the recent news scares me a bit. Portis is reportedly having more knee issues and for some reason I think he is going to leave a lot of fantasy owners hanging on Sunday. Be sure to check the latest news come Saturday night, as things could change quickly, but for now, I’m not liking Portis in week 5.
Player
Match-Up
Ballgame’s Projections
WR Larry Fitzgerald
(@STL)
7 rec, 110 yards, 1TD
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football The quarterback situation in Arizona was a concern entering last week, but after watching both Leinart and Warner do well, I actually like Fitz even more than I did in week 1. Even if injury strikes the starting QB in AZ, Fitz will be fine as there are two proven passers throwing the ball in Phoenix. Fitz should have a fantastic week 5 performance against the Rams.
Player
Match-Up
Ballgame’s Projections
RB Brian Leonard
(vs. AZ)
45 rushing yards, 8 receiving yards, 0TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football I’m not liking Leonard this week. The Cards have a pretty solid defense right now and I’m not sure the Rams will move the football enough in this game to ever have a good rushing attack. Plus, look what the Cards did last week to Fast Willie Parker (37 rushing yards)!
Player
Match-Up
Ballgame’s Projections
RB Marshawn Lynch
(@BUF)
88/20 yards, 2TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football I love the way Lynch runs the ball in Buffalo, and I think he will start looking like a very good RB2 here shortly. It may start against Dallas on Monday night. If you can get Lynch now, do it! I really like his trade value right now, he is a bargain.
Player
Match-Up
Ballgame’s Projections
RB Cedric Benson
(@GB)
55/6 yards, 0TDs
studs-of-the-week-fantasy-football What happened to this guy? Benson was an animal in college, but he is the softest starting RB in the NFL. He goes down so easily and he doesn’t make good decisions. He also can’t hold onto the football. Benson is going to continue to disappoint if you ask me, and if you want any value for him, trade him now! If he has one more horrible week, especially after the coaching staff stated that they’re going to give him more carries this week, he will lose all 2-3 round type value.

Be sure to check out all of our Week 5 Projections.

Ask The Experts: Who Do I Start?

Reggie Bush (vs. CAR) or Willie Parker (vs. SEA) ?

ASK THE EXPERTS - A questioned asked by a FFX Forum user.
Smitty
Well, the Seahawks are ranked 13th against the run and the Panthers are 21st… that alone makes Parker the more attractive start. I like both runners this week, and I think Bush will almost definitely score on Sunday, but I expect Parker to explode against Seattle. He should have no problem rushing for over 100 yards and grabbing at least one score. Start Willie Parker.
Both of these guys are great starts this week. They are both actually in my top 8 overall this week, but I think everything the Saints do will be through Bush. Start Reggie Bush.

Marion Barber (@BUF) or Frank Gore (vs. BAL) ?

ASK THE EXPERTS - A questioned asked by a FFX Forum user.
Smitty
It is tough to ever advise someone to bench Frank Gore, but his match-up is insanely tough and Barber’s is not. Baltimore surrenders just 71.0 yards per game on the ground, while Buffalo (Barber’s opponent) gives up double that. Barber is a touchdown machine… Start Marion Barber.
The Baltimore D is looking for revenge and they are going to find it against Dilfer and the 49ers. Stay away from all 49ers this week if you can, and start your Cowboys. Start Marion Barber.

Santonio Holmes (vs. SEA) or Larry Fitzgerald (@STL) ?

ASK THE EXPERTS - A questioned asked by a FFX Forum user.
Smitty
The Rams passing defense only gives up 192 yards per game, but that may be because the Rams are ranked 28th in the NFL against the run (giving up 157 yards per game). I like Fitz despite facing a decent passing defense, but Santonio Holmes is coming off a monster 2TD-performance and I firmly believe that the WR is going to have continued success. Seattle is a very decent match-up for Pittsburgh and that passing attack - Start Santonio Holmes.
Fitz proved last week that he can do well with either Leinart or Warner starting. He should have a 100-yard day in St. Louis this week. Start Larry Fitzgerald.
