Smitty’s Week 8 Studs & Duds
Smitty

STUD: Ben Roethlisberger

QB
(@CIN)
310 passing yards, 3TDs, 0 INTs
The Bengals passing defense is ranked 28th in the league against the pass, surrendering 249 yards per game through the air. Past that, the Bengals passing defense has given up 16TDs through the air, which means Big Ben is in for a big day on Sunday. Roethlisberger is quickly becoming one of the best fantasy quarterbacks for the value in the game of fantasy football. I wouldn’t be shocked if Roethy had 330+ and at least 3TDs against the Bengals in Week 8.

DUD: LaMont Jordan

RB
(@TEN)
50/17 yards
LaMont is a bargain right now via trade, but if you can, consider waiting until next week to trade for the rusher. The Raiders are at Tennessee this weekend, a rushing defense that ranks #1 in the entire NFL (giving up just 59.7 yards-per-game). Given that the Raiders have the 29th ranked passing attack, I don’t see them doing anything at all against the Titans D in Week 8. Don’t expect much from Jordan this week, but consider trading for him just as soon as Tuesday morning comes — He will be a bargain entering Week 9.

STUD: Marshawn Lynch

RB
(@NYJ)
110/20 yards, 2TDs
Lynch looked absolutely fantastic last week against that tough Ravens defense. Lynch ran the ball 27 times for 84 yards and a touchdown, and he looked like a beast doing it. Well, make no mistake… Lynch will be ready to rumble in week 8, as he takes on the Jets, who are ranked 28th in the league against the run (surrendering 138 rushing yards and 9TDs per game). I believe Edwards is really going to manage this game well, but Buffalo’s success will all start with the run. Get Lynch in your line-up if you have him!

DUD: Laurence Maroney / Kevin Faulk

RBs
(vs. WAS)
75 total rushing yards
The Patriots face the Redskins this weekend, a rushing defense that ranks top 5 in the entire league. Not only does that New England rushing attack face one of the better rushing defenses in the league, it doesn’t help that Tom Brady and that New England passing attack tosses for 299.4 yards per game and is on pace for 61.7 passing scores. That alone makes starting a New England back questionable… add in the tough match-up and that spells a tough start for any NE back.

STUD: Donovan McNabb

QB
(@MIN)
295 yards, 4TDs
Minnesota has the worst passing defense in the entire NFL, giving up 282.5 yards per game. They have, however, only given up 9TDs all season long through the air, but still… I firmly believe that the Eagles will explode in this contest. This could still be a close game, given Adrian Peterson’s ability to rush the football, but I don’t believe that the Vikes will be able to contain the Eagles air assault in Week 8.

Ask The Experts: Who Do I Start?

Jesse Chatman (vs. NYG) or Clinton Portis (@NE) ?

ASK THE EXPERTS - A questioned asked by a FFX Forum user.
Smitty
Be live it or not, both of these rushing defenses are in the league’s top 10, so this comes down to how I think each game will go. New England has been crushing teams every week, and they don’t let up even when they’re up big. I see Washington getting down early and I don’t think we will see Washington rushing the football much in the second-half of Sunday’s game. Chatman is a great receiving-back, as well as rusher, so no matter how his team is doing, he will be involved. Neither is a fantastic start this week, but I say start Jesse Chatman,
I still want to see Chatman perform as a starter before I start him in front of solid fantasy RBs, but I think I give him the start over Portis. Both the Giants and the Patriots are pretty good against the run, but I think New England is just a bit better. I see Portis busting this week because the Patriots just kill teams and force them to pass, whereas I could see Chatman getting a respectable 60/40 and a touchdown. Start Jesse Chatman.

Travis Henry (vs. GB) or Steven Jackson (vs. CLE)?

ASK THE EXPERTS - A questioned asked by a FFX Forum user.
Smitty
Henry has kind of a tough match-up this week, as he takes on the Packers defense (11th in the NFL against the run). Steven Jackson is expected to play in Week 8 and his match-up couldn’t be better (unless he was playing Miami or Denver). The Browns are 30th in the league against the run, surrendering 149.5 yards per game on the ground, so as long as Jackson is back, he is the guy to go with in my opinion. Be sure to monitor Jackson’s health, as this advice could change quickly if Jackson looks like he may not get most of the carries on Sunday. If all looks well with his situation, start Steven Jackson.
Jackson has the better match-up, but who knows how much Jackson will play. I want to say Jackson, but until he proves he is back, I can’t bench a Travis Henry-type, even if he has a tough match-up. Start Travis Henry.
