Super Bowl XLII is over and done with (congrats to the Giants)… so that means that fantasy football is coming to an end for a while, right? Think again!
We have once again put together one of the earliest official 2008 Expert Fantasy Football Mock Drafts with some of the best fantasy Sites on the Web.
This draft began on February 4th, 2008 and was completed on February 29th, 2008 — This draft is based off of a standard scoring format. The 2008 rookie class is included.

Steven Jackson falling to 1.06 (Rosenthal, CBS) looks to be the bargain of this first-round, but I also really like the value of Larry Johnson at 1.07 by Andy of Yahoo Sports. Johnson had a rough start to the 2007 fantasy season and it eventually got worse for the runner, as he suffered a season-ending foot injury in Week 8. That is how most will remember Johnson entering 2008 fantasy drafts… what they won’t remember is that Johnson was back to elite form in his final three games of the ‘07 season, as he was averaging 123 total yards and 1.33TDs per start. I expect L.J. to be well rested, healthy and ready to prove doubters wrong in 2008… I truly believe that 15+ touchdowns isn’t out of the question for L.J next year.
The possible “reach” in this first-round has to be Clinton Portis at 1.10 (CBS, David). One can argue that Portis deserves a top 10 selection on draft day, but the Redskins are expected to implement a full-fledged West Coast offense in 2008 under the team’s new coordinator Jim Zorn. In a West Coast offense, Portis would have to play all 16 games in 2008 and have a career-year in receptions (and YPC) in order to earn top 8-10 overall value. I’m not saying it isn’t possible, and David is a solid writer at CBS (and clearly knows what he’s doing), but Willie Parker, Willis McGahee (who is now under Cam Cameron in BAL) and Marshawn Lynch would have all been better selections in my opinion, because I feel that all three have a better shot at outperforming that #8 draft slot. In fact, McGahee could be a top 5RB in 2008 under Cameron. I would even rather have Michael Turner over Clinton Portis in 2008. Bold? Yea, well… that’s how we roll. The CLEAR steal in this second-round is Randy Moss. Moss is almost certain to stay in NE in 2008, as the Patriots are set to name him as their franchise player (and even then, that will likely lead to a long-term deal of some kind anyway). In New England, Moss deserves to be a late first-round pick (at the very least)… and Andy from Yahoo Sports gets to scoop him up with the 2.06 pick? Amazing value, Andy!
While I have my doubts about Ronnie Brown (ACL) playing at even 80% in 2008, Joe from FootballDiehards has to be pleased with landing the back with #23 pick overall. A recovering Brown is still worthy of a top 16-20 overall pick, but fantasy owners should be careful not to expect too much in 2008, as Cam Cameron is no longer in Miami. That is the kind of departure that would have even damaged the value of a healthy Ronnie Brown. Just keep that in mind come draft day.
As for the “reaches” in this second-round, there were quite a few of them, including Larry Fitzgerald at 2.05, Earnest Graham at 2.08 and especially Jamal Lewis at 2.09. Granted, all three of these players are capable of earning these draft spots when all is said and done, but Lewis and Graham have huge question marks surrounding their situations and Fitz could end up being the #2WR on his team in 2008. Still, these picks could work out, like I said, and this is why we play the game. I must say I do like Earnest Graham in 2008, and I’d be extremely pleased to land him in the mid-to-late third-round — but, the true value in Graham entering ‘08 is when you can land him as your 3rd or 4th player.
As for our Reggie Wayne pick (2.12), we were very pleased to land what we consider to be the #2WR entering ‘08.

Before I talk about our own third-round selection, I’d first like to touch on some of the other bargain grabs in this particular round, like Maurice Jones-Drew at 3.05 (Eisenberg, CBS). This was just plain old theft, as Jones-Drew is worthy of a top 15-20 overall selection. I understand that he still has Fred Taylor stealing carries away from him, but I truly believe that Jones-Drew will see a major increase in carries in 2008 and could easily produce top 10RB numbers if that ends up being the case. I think most everyone feels that “The Human Bowling Ball” has top 5-10RB upside, it just comes down to him getting the touches.
Darren McFadden at 3.07 (Behrens, Yahoo) was also another absolute steal. If no RBs were available that I liked at our 3.01 pick, I would have grabbed McFadden without hesitation. Where the rookie lands will mean everything and his landing spot could alter his draft-value in either direction. If he lands in Dallas (via trade-up), well, then expect the running back to go a lot higher than the 3.07 pick in your August drafts. If he lands in a less ideal situation where he might compete for carries, it is possible that he slips into the early-to-middle third-round come August.
In all fairness, our 3.01 Michael Turner selection is a bit of a “reach” given that the rusher still hasn’t even signed-to-start with an NFL team. Well, to me, that is a formality, and while many will continue to be cautiously optimistic about the running back’s future in this league, I’m going to continue to predict top 10RB numbers for “The Burner” in ‘08. Yea, I’ve heard it all before… we haven’t seen him play enough, or he was shutdown this year in the playoffs… Look, sometimes all you have to do is watch a player run the football and you just know. I see the same thing in Turner that I saw in Larry Johnson when the K.C. runner wasn’t yet on the map. Sometimes you have very little to go on, but that’s my favorite part of this sport we call fantasy football… The gut instinct-type calls that either make you look like a genius or a loose cannon. I am extremely confident that Turner will end up being a “genius” pick. His impressive career 5.5 YPC average in the NFL, along with his tremendous mixture of hard-nose running and speed, will translate into elite-type numbers in 2008. Oh, and just to let you know how high I am on Turner, and have been, in our Expert Dynasty League, I traded Reggie Bush for Michael Turner and Roy Williams before last year’s fantasy season even began. That trade has turned our starting line-up into: Tony Romo, Adrian Peterson, Larry Johnson, Michael Turner, Marques Colston and Roy Williams/Santonio Holmes. For more on that league, click here.

Probably one of the biggest steals of this entire draft so far has to be Tony Romo at 4.09 (TheFootballExpert). This selection would even be a steal at 3.09. To be honest, we actually considered going with Romo with either our 2.12 or 3.01 picks, so how he fell all the way to the late 4th-round is beyond me. Nice grab! The Cowboys QB could end up being the #1 or #2 fantasy quarterback in 2008.
Another steal of this 4th-round has to be Laurence Maroney at 4.04 (FantasyFootballStarters, Russ). Now, like I’ve said before numerous times, I don’t trust Maroney as a RB2 entering the 2008 fantasy season, and I wouldn’t have even considered taking him with our 3.01 pick, but 4.04 is what you call low-risk/extremely high-reward. Once you get into the 4th-5th rounds, you’re talking about DeAngelo Williams-types… and maybe Jonathan Stewart-types (if you’re lucky)… Maroney shouldn’t be there.
Probably the biggest reach in this 4th-round has to be Rudi Johnson at 4.01 (FFWhiz, Adam). I like Adam’s first two picks (Grant and Lynch), but I would have taken a number of players ahead of Rudi Johnson with that pick, especially since this team already rostered two backs. I am not confident that Rudi will be much more than a situational fantasy-flex looking forward, but that’s me. Adam is a solid fantasy analyst and if anyone can project the comeback player of the year, it’s probably Adam.
As for our 4th-round pick, I was extremely pleased to land Carson Palmer at 4.12. Granted Palmer and the Bengals have their hands full with Chad Johnson this off-season, but that team is loaded with talent and I expect the team to rejuvenate the rushing game in 2008. Either the coaching staff will address the position via the 2008 NFL Draft, or they will commit to using Kenny Watson (or Irons) on more of a full-time basis… either way, I believe that the Bengals rushing game will improve in ‘08. Now, it is possible that Rudi still has some gas left in the tank (as FFWhiz projects up above), but I’ll believe it when I see it. The point is, a rejuvenated rushing attack will make this offense less one dimensional and way more potent on the passing side of things. I wouldn’t be surprised if Palmer threw for 35+ scores in this upcoming fantasy football season.

Jonathan Stewart at 5.08 (RC, JunkyardJake) is pure robbery, as the future rookie has an excellent shot at being the second-best fantasy back coming out of this 2008 class. I don’t think you will see Stewart fall into many fourth-rounds come August, let alone fifth-rounds, so don’t get too excited about him dropping this far in this very early mock. Odds are that just as soon as he finds a home in the NFL, Jonathan Stewart will be a regular third-round pick (at the very least). Great grab, RC!
I’ll be honest, I couldn’t be more pleased with our 5.01 selection. Santonio Holmes is my #1 fantasy breakout WR entering 2008 and I think he will rival fantasy WRs like Larry Fitzgerald, Brandon Marshall and Greg Jennings for fantasy points at week 16’s end. The Pittsburgh receiver missed two games in 2007, and was playing injured in another two, so his numbers could have been more like 70 receptions for 1,100 yards and 11-12 scores (versus his still-impressive 52/942/8 on just 13 games). With Big Ben only getting better, and with Hines Ward getting older, this is the year of The Santonio. Don’t be shocked if Holmes catches 80 passes for 1,200+ yards and 12 scores in 2008.
There weren’t all that many “reaches” in this fifth round. I mean, someone could say that Shaun Alexander or Travis Henry could bust, but the RB options available at this selection were slim. I can’t argue that our Edgerrin James pick (down below) is any safer.

I think grabbing Derek Anderson at 6.06 (Andy, Yahoo Sports) was a fantastic selection. Anderson has top 5-7QB upside in 2008, but you can grab the guy in the 6- to 8-round range, which makes him low-risk/high-reward. If your strategy in 2008 is to wait on a QB, well, then Derek Anderson is your man!
Our Lee Evans pick (6.12) felt like a steal, as the WR is capable of top 10WR numbers in any given season. With Trent Edwards getting some experience in 2007, that Buffalo passing attack could mature quite a bit heading into this upcoming fantasy season – I expect Evans to be a significant bargain in hindsight.
Donald Driver at 6.08 (Eisenberg, CBS Sports) could end up being a solid selection when all is said and done. When he slips into that 7th-round range in your August drafts, don’t hesitate to roster the guy!

Ben Roethlisberger at 7.03 (Brad Evans, CBS Sports) has to be right up there with Tony Romo as one of the major steals of this draft. I would have passed on Palmer with our 4.12 if I would have known that we could have landed Big Ben with our 7.01 pick… and to be completely honest, I almost grabbed Roethy anyway, even though we already had Carson on our roster. Roethy dropping this far is the kind of thing that may convince me to wait on a QB in most of my 2008 drafts, but I think I want to see QBs like Derek Anderson and Ben Roethlisberger fall repeatedly before I make such a commitment.

Cam Cameron, who is now in Baltimore, could turn Todd Heap into a monster in 2008. We grabbed Heap at 8.12, which is extremely solid value for a TE with top three upside. Heap is recovering from a hamstring injury, but he is already on his way back from that and should be well rested heading into his bounce-back 2008 campaign.

I have to say, I really like the value of Tony Scheffler at 9.09 (Russ, FantasyFootballStarters). Scheff has top 5-8TE upside and Russ is getting him at bargain value right here.
As for our selection in this 9th-round, we took Indy WR Anthony Gonzalez (at 9.01). Gonzo was by far the best WR available at this point in the draft, or at least he has the most upside. I don’t have much faith in Marvin Harrison this year, as the veteran turns 36 this August… Even if Gonzo doesn’t officially grab that WR2 role in Indy this year, he is capable of being the second-best fantasy receiver on that Indy roster in 2008 and he could rival the fantasy numbers that Brandon Stokley put up in 2004 (68 passes for 1,077 yards and 10 scores).

Matt Leinart at 10.12 isn’t bad at all, as he is really the only QB left with top 10 upside. We were really hoping to land Ahmed Bradshaw with this pick in order to make a statement, but Brad Evans from Yahoo Sports beat us to it at 10.10. Nice grab, Brad, Bradshaw has HUGE upside next year and he may be worth the gamble in even the 8th- or 9th-round in 2008 fantasy drafts.

Our Kevin Smith selection is a stab in the dark, especially without knowing where all these rookies will land. But, if drafting today, I would be very pleased to land a few rookies this late in hopes that they would land somewhere solid come April.
