Fantasy Football Stock Market (July 2008)

Below is a list of fantasy football players that either have Stock on the Rise or Stock on the Decline. We will make this fantasy football column a regular during the season and we will try and crank out a few more off-season editions as we approach August.

fantasy football player stock on the rise

Chad Johnson | WR CIN

Ocho Cinco’s stock has been bouncing all over the place this off-season, as he has gone from possible holdout to all-star teammate. Clearly the receiver’s fantasy value is back on the rise and he might just be a top 3-4 fantasy wide receiver when all is said and done in 2008.

fantasy football player stock on the decline

Brandon Marshall | WR DEN

Marshall could face a suspension this season for multiple arrests, so that alone makes him a risky 2008 investment. Not only am I worried about Marshall for this upcoming season, his poor decision-making has us concerned for the long-term as well. So, where should fantasy owners take the Broncos’ wide receiver heading into 2008 August redraft leagues? To me, anything earlier than the fourth-round is too early. If you’re selecting Marshall before the fourth, that means that you’re taking him ahead of Torry Holt, Anquan Boldin and possibly even a T.J. Houshmandzadeh or Chad Johnson. No way I can do that. Let someone else take the risk in 2008!

fantasy football player stock on the rise

Selvin Young | RB DEN

Ok, let’s first tackle this issue from a redraft perspective. If you think that Selvin Young is going to maintain a kung-fu grip on that starting running back job in Denver through 16 games, you’re fooling yourself. In Mike Shanahan’s 13 seasons in the NFL, the No 1 running back from training camp has lost his job six times at some point during that season. Since Terrell Davis, Shanny has not rolled with too many running backs for a long period of time. All that said, there is absolutely no doubt about it… Young has huge upside right now, and his value could actually increase between now and the start of the season, but he could also be third on the depth chart come Week 1 - That’s the risk you take if you count on coach Shanny. The only thing predictable about Shanahan is that he is unpredictable, and for that, I won’t go near Young in 2008 (given the cost). Obviously this speaks volumes about my dynasty take on the guy. My advice to dynasty owners is to trade Young now before Shanny confuses the situation with some comment about Michael Pittman or Torain. Or, if you want to keep Young, at least go get rookie Ryan Torain and help eliminate some of the risk that comes along with owning a Denver rusher.

fantasy football player stock on the decline

Ryan Torain | RB DEN

As stated above, Selvin Young clearly has the most value right now out of all the Denver running backs, but this is good for those fantasy owners who plan to target Ryan Torain in August drafts. If Torain doesn’t grab the Broncos starting gig before Week 1, and he very well could, the rookie is set to be a draft day steal come August (his ADP is in rounds 8-10 currently). Shanny loves his rookies and I truly believe that it is only a matter of time before Shanny throws Torain a bone. While I can’t guarantee that Torain will hang onto the job, I think that he is the best bet to finish out the 2008 season as the Broncos’ starting running back. If you’re in a dynasty league and you already own Torain, don’t bother acquiring Young, as he will likely cost too much given the risk - plus, you most likely have the Weeks 8-16 starter anyway.

fantasy football player stock on the rise

Dwayne Bowe | WR KC

Dwayne Bowe has stud written all over him. The quarterback position is obviously a concern down in Kansas City, but that didn’t stop Bowe from posting a monster 70 receptions for 995 yards and five scores as a rookie. Larry Johnson is once again healthy and back to form, so Bowe is going to get open in 2008. If you own Bowe in dynasty leagues, congrats and hang onto him! If you’re in a redraft league, there is some bad news in all this. Bowe’s ADP is climbing and climbing fast (5th-round). He could earn you that kind of production, so he isn’t too much of a reach there, but any higher and you may want to grab yourself a Plaxico Burress or Torry Holt.

fantasy football player stock on the decline

Antonio Gates | TE SD

Antonio Gates is coming off foot surgery and there is a chance that he may not be ready for Week 1. His stock is clearly on the decline, but this could be a good thing. Our guess is that he will be ready come September, but there is no guarantee and a touch of risk. This is why Jason Witten is probably the safest elite tight end option entering ‘08, but Gates still commands that second spot. Gates has posted at least 900 yards and 9TDs in four straight seasons - If someone in your dynasty league is selling him on the cheap, take advantage! If your league is sleeping on him in your 2008 August draft, take advantage!
