Wide Receivers
I really believe that Braylon Edwards could be the league’s best receiver in 2008. I still have Edwards ranked behind Randy Moss heading into this upcoming fantasy season, but Edwards could be one of the biggest second-round steals at Week 16’s end.
Terrell Owens absolutely has the ability to move up into that Tier 1a, but at 34 (going on 35), I hesitate to slot him with Moss, Edwards and Reggie Wayne (all younger options). No, this analysis isn’t on keeper/dynasty rankings, but with age comes injury (even with Owens). Keep in mind, we still have him ranked No. 5 overall.
Santonio Holmes has the talent and situation to climb an entire tier. Don’t draft him, or trade for him, at the value of an Andre Johnson, but roster the Steeler as your WR2 knowing that he can outperform his draft value by at least an entire round. If you have already drafted, attack Holmes via trade. Not sure what to give up? Get on our FFX Forums and get some advice!
Chad Ocho Cinco (yes, he officially changed his name) is a tough guy to rank right now. As I wrote in our Handcuffing Your Players In 2008 article, the key to owning Ocho Cinco in 2008 is owning Chris Henry. It’s one of those rare wide receiver handcuffs that can save a season and almost guarantee top 15 fantasy receiver production from one WR slot. If you have already drafted, and just own Chad, don’t sell Ocho Cinco on the cheap — He still could play like an elite receiver this year. Injuries are part of this game of fantasy football — You have to observe and adjust, and Henry is that adjust part. So adjust!
Brandon Marshall was able to get his three-game suspension reduced to a one-game suspension, so clearly he gets a bump. That said, I still have my doubts about his decision-making ability.
Torry Holt, Dwayne Bowe and Wes Welker all feel like potential tier-climbing-candidates this year, especially Bowe. I like Bowe a lot right now.
Lee Evans, one of our controversial favorites, has played like an elite fantasy receiver in the past… with Trent Edwards maturing nicely, we’re not sure why Evans is so undervalued this season… take advantage in upcoming drafts and work a deal for him if you have already drafted.
And finally, with Brett Favre in New York this upcoming season, Jerricho Cotchery has breakout written all over him.
Tight Ends
Kellen Winslow, Antonio Gates and Jason Witten all have the ability to be this year’s top fantasy tight end, but who else has top three upside? How about Vernon Davis? The speedy tight end could see increased targets with Mike Martz now in San Fran. With Frank Gore keeping defenses honest, Davis will find himself open often in ‘08. The sky is the limit for Davis, he just needs to stay healthy… if he does, this will be his breakout year!
With Cam Cameron in Baltimore this season, realize that Todd Heap could extremely outperform his draft value at Week 16’s end.
Dustin Keller could shine as a Jet this year and get ready for Greg Olsen to impress.
