Fantasy Football Stock Market – Week 2

Published: 09/08/2008 12:59 am by Smitty in Fantasy Articles

With just two Monday night games to go, Week 1 of the 2008 fantasy football season is now in the rear view… so let’s get right into Week 2. Below is our Weekly Fantasy Football Stock Market Advice for Week 2. Who is on the rise? Who is on the Decline?

Michael Turner | ATL RB

There was a reason we pimped Michael Turner over and over this off-season… in fact, we talked about him so much, we frequently got emails asking if we would stop. Clearly we didn’t, we only continued to beat a dead horse… and it’s because he is the real deal and the proof was in the production on this one. As we said in numerous articles , if you had doubt, all you needed to do was just check out his Week 5 stats against Denver in 2007, where he ran for 147 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. And if that was not enough for you, we suggested that doubters look into his 5.5 career yards-per-carry average on 228 carries. And if that still wasn’t enough, we suggested that doubters take a look at his history of breaking off long runs, like his 83-, 74- and 73-yard runs with the Chargers (as a back-up). And if that still wasn’t enough, Turner tried to warn you himself that he was the next big thing at the running back position, breaking off runs of 63 and 52 yards against the Colts in the preseason… We even dedicated a FFX TV segment on Turner just to be sure our stance was clear… for those who believed, congrats on owning the next top 10RB that no one believed in! Don’t sell him high because he is only going to continue to impress! Welcome to the Michael Turner show, everyone! Tickets are all sold-out!

Steven Jackson | STL RB

Steven Jackson was a huge disappointment in Week 1, rushing for 40 yards on 14 carries. He also added 3 catches for 34 yards, but the problem is that offense. The Rams look awful and Jackson could get abused in early 2008. Don’t expect things to get too much better in Week 2 against the Giants. Don’t sell low, as the runner should eventually get things going, but fantasy owners should expect a bit of inconsistency this season, as that Rams offense is just going to be hit or miss every single Sunday. If you want to acquire Jackson via trade, wait a week… he may actually get cheaper.

fantasy football player stock on the rise

Willie Parker | PIT RB

You probably couldn’t trade for Willie Parker right now no matter how hard you try. We don’t recommend selling your “FWP stock” because it could continue to increase embedded in that explosive Steelers offense, but handcuffing FWP to Rashard Mendenhall is a must. No matter who is in that backfield in 2008, they will produce, so locking down that entire running back situation is a must! This Steelers duo was one of our recommend bargain RB2s heading into the 2008 season — It appears that we even we underestimated the combo, as the duo is starting to look more like a secure RB1.

Marques Colston | NO WR

UPDATE (9/10/08): Marques Colston (torn ligament in thumb) will miss possibly 6 weeks due to the thumb injury.

Not too many fantasy owners freak out after one week, but it happens… so take some stabs and try trading for some studs that played like duds in Week 1. Marques Colston is at the top of the list for Week 1 duds, as he caught just 3 passes for 26 and no touchdowns on day where Drew Brees threw 32 times for 343 and 3TDs. That won’t worry most Colston owners, but you may want to make sure that the Colston owner in your league wasn’t already a slight doubter.

fantasy football player stock on the rise

Jerricho Cotchery | NYJ WR

Brett Favre has made a career out of turning his most athletic receiver into a fantasy stud. If Cotchery doesn’t look like top 10-12 material to you this year, I hope you’re in one of my leagues. If you don’t own Cotchery, you probably can’t get him cheap, so it may not be worth even looking into. If you own Cotchery, don’t sell high… ride the wave, because it won’t be crashing anytime soon.

fantasy football player stock on the decline

Chad Ocho Cinco| CIN WR

Like with Marques Colston, this is the time to attack wide receivers like Chad Ocho Cinco, who didn’t perform well in their first outing of the season. Carson Palmer only threw for 99 yards, 0TDs and 1 INT, so recognize that Chad’s lack of production isn’t necessarily due to his banged up shoulder. Baltimore still has a very solid defense, so look to the future and see how cheap No. 85 is in your league!

fantasy football player stock on the rise

Chris Johnson | TEN RB

Chris Johnson actually made a surprise start on Sunday against the Jags, and saying that he played outstanding would be an understatement. Johnson may be one of this year’s middle-round steals when all is said and done. The rookie ran the football 15 times for 93 yards and caught 3 passes for 34 yards and 1TD… the Titans are going to find a way to get the ball in this guy’s hands, which makes him instant flex-worthy (possibly more). If you own the rook, keep him on your roster!

fantasy football player stock on the decline

Braylon Edwards | CLE WR

Braylon Edwards had an extremely disappointing Week 1 outing against the Cowboys, catching just 2 passes for 14 yards. Edwards has the talent, and situation, to be this season’s #1 fantasy wide receiver, so don’t sell low and absolutely attack the guy via trade if for some reason he can be had. Again, Colston, Chad and Edwards are studs to target right now just in case fantasy owners are planning on having a knee-jerk reaction to Sunday’s Week 1 results.

Chad will come through just as long as he can stay healthy. It’s a long season and it wasn’t like the offense was moving the ball down the field. Week 1 was disappointing in a lot of ways, but don’t give up on your studs. It’s a marathon.

I traded The burner for FWP straight up . . . this week was a wash, but since I already had Mendenhall I think it was a good move – FWP will be more consistent IMO . . .

One can’t argue your new security having both PIT rushers. And that PIT offense is going to continue to dominate. If only you could have kept both :)
