Fantasy Football Stock Market - Week 3

With the Monday night game still to go, Week 2 of the 2008 fantasy football season is now behind us… so it’s time to dig into Week 3. Below is our Weekly Fantasy Football Stock Market Advice for Week 3. Who is on the rise? Who is on the Decline?

fantasy football player stock on the rise

Aaron Rodgers | QB GB

It’s time to admit that I was wrong about the talent this quarterback has. Aaron Rodgers has looked accurate and efficient in his first two NFL starts. I still worry about his ability to stay healthy, as before this season the quarterback suffered two relatively serious injuries (broken foot and a torn hamstring) without ever even starting a game, but currently those concerns seem small. He is healthy and he is playing well. Rodgers looks like top 10QB material after all.

Steven Jackson | RB STL

Steven Jackson is off to an extremely slow start and it’s tough to tell if he will ever be consistent this season in that awful Rams attack. The runner ran for just 53 yards on 13 carries, but he did add 7 receptions for 37 yards in the Week 2 loss against the Giants. We do have faith in Jackson rebounding, to an extent, so trading for the guy now while his value is low isn’t a bad idea, although, don’t trade for him expecting top 3RB numbers - That Rams defense is going to make it hard on that Rams offense to run the football late in games. Playing from behind all the time is not a good recipe for a solid rushing attack.

Brandon Marshall | WR DEN

Brandon Marshall looks absolutely fantastic. He looks like a top 5WR right now and that may not change. I have been very critical of this guy’s off-the-field decisions, but it’s time to let that go when the guy is capable of pulling in 18 catches. Don’t trade Marshall if you have him - He should continue to dominate! If you don’t own him, good luck trading for him, as he is going to cost you an arm and a leg.

Carson Palmer, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Chad Ocho Cinco | CIN

These three studs have been complete duds thus far in the 2008 fantasy football season. Is it time to panic? Not yet, but you have every right to be concerned if you own even one of Palmer, Housh or Chad. The Bengals’ Week 1 outing was against the Ravens, so monster numbers were not in the cards for the season opener, but Week 2 should have been better… and then came Hurricane Ike. That Bengals-Titans game squared off against 50MPH winds and there was just one touchdown pass in the entire contest (and it was a short TD pass). You can only rationalize poor play for so long, but one has to consider all this before they panic and sell low. If you own any of these Bengals players, hang tight unless someone is buying high. The bad news is that the Bengals face the Giants in Week 3, but I expect a lot of passing in this contest.

fantasy football player stock on the rise

Kurt Warner | QB AZ

Kurt Warner is playing great football so far this season and that Arizona defense is a big reason why. This might just be the season the Cardinals franchise turns it all around, so if there was ever a time to believe in Warner and that AZ passing attack, this is the year! Warner/Leinart is a solid QB1 combo looking forward.

fantasy football player stock on the decline

Michael Turner | RB ATL

Michael Turner was a monster in Week 1, rushing for 220 yards and 2TDs against an awful Lions rushing defense. In Week 2, "The Burner" only rushed the football 14 times for 42 yards and had zero touchdowns. Atlanta’s limited offensive attack could make Turner’s 2008 production hit and miss from week to week, but the guy still has top 10RB upside looking forward and fantasy owners should take full advantage of owners who are starting to doubt the speedster after one poor outing. Turner faces the Chiefs in Week 3. The Chiefs just gave up 300 rushing yards and 2TDs to the Raiders in Week 2, an offense that is also very limited like Atlanta’s offense — This means Turner should be in for a monster Week 3 performance.

fantasy football player stock on the rise

Santana Moss | WR WAS

Santana Moss had a great Week 2 performance catching 7 passes for 164 yards and 1TD. Moss is a solid WR3 this season, but I’m still not sold on Jason Campbell despite a great Week 2 outing against the Saints, where he threw for 321 yards and 1TD. That Saints defense can do that to a quarterback, so consider selling Santana high if you can. Don’t get me wrong, we still like Moss this year, but if you could somehow package Moss with another WR and buy a Braylon Edwards on the cheap, that’s going to make you look like a genius down the stretch.

fantasy football player stock on the decline

Braylon Edwards | WR CLE

As I just said above, packaging players like Santana Moss (and others) for a struggling Braylon Edwards is a great move to make at this point in the strange 2008 fantasy season. Edwards should rebound and be that top 5WR that he is capable of being, so go get him now while you still can. The Browns struggled to move the ball against the Steelers in Week 2, and many will start to panic, but keep in mind that both teams faced some nasty winds in that Week 2 battle - Derek Anderson and Edwards could be bargains via trade right now.
