Who Do I Start & Who Do I Sit?

Matt Forte (vs. TEN) or Tim Hightower (vs. SF)?

First of all, the match-ups scream Tim Hightower. Tennessee is a tough defense and the 49ers are not (19th). With Hightower now getting starter carries, and given the match-up, this is a no-brainer in my book. One can expect at least 90-100 yards rushing and a score out of Hightower in Week 10. Forte could be looking at a roughly 8-10 point outing in most scoring formats.

Edgerrin James getting zero carries for the Cardinals in last week’s win over the Rams was an eye opener for me. I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t see this coming at all, let alone this season, but here we are talking about Tim Hightower being a great start this week against San Francisco. What makes him a great play is that defenses cannot ignore the pass – the Cardinals can sling it with the best of them – and that opens up those running lanes. Matt Forte has done nothing to deserve being benched, but the matchup with Tennessee presents all kinds of problems for Chicago’s offense. Hightower is the play and I expect another 80-100 yards and a score this week.

Ray Rice (@HOU) or Willie Parker (vs. IND)?

Houston ranks 23rd against the run and the Colts rank 25th, so both of these runners are fine starts in Week 10. I like Ray Rice a lot this week, and moving forward, but Willie Parker is a top 10RB when on the field. Start FWP without hesitation and expect 140 total yards and a score. Rice could rush for 100 and a score in Week 10, but because there are no guarantees just yet as to how many carries any one BAL runner will get each week, you have to go with the safer start. Can you start both RBs? Get on our FFX Forums and post all your runners if you think Rice fits into your other RB slot.

For those who suffered through Willie Parker’s injury earlier in the season, this is the week it will all seem worth it – a matchup with the Colts. The Colts give up almost 150 yards rushing per game and have yielded 10 TD runs thus far – Parker should be able to take advantage of that coming off his Monday night performance (21/70/1), which included goal line work and only four carries for Mewelde Moore. I don’t endorse Ray Rice this week simply because the Ravens’ leading rusher continues to change week to week and a healthy Willis McGahee will almost certainly cut into Rice’s touches. Fast Willie is in line for 125+ total yards and a score in this one – you don’t want to miss out.

Sage Rosenfels (vs. BAL) or Eli Manning (@PHI)?

I like Sage Rosenfels a lot and he will continue to feed Andre Johnson down the stretch, so don’t worry all you AJ owners out there. As for this Sunday, Rosey has a tough match-up against a mean Baltimore defense. Despite the tough opponent, I think Rosey is a good start this week and I think he is capable of throwing for 250 passing yards, and while I think he could throw an interception or two, I think he will toss at least two scores. I’m not a big Eli Manning fan this season and I don’t see him outscoring Rosenfels this week.

This is a tough call as both these guys have tough matchups against good defenses. That said, Sage Rosenfels is my pick here for a few reasons. First, he is playing at home and a tough defense like the Ravens is always easier to deal with without the crowd noise. Second, Rosenfels is not a household name, but he’s no slouch and has proven he can step in and win games for this team. Third, Sage has a lot of offensive weapons at his disposal: Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter, Owen Daniels and a healthy running game to keep the Ravens honest. I’m not saying I expect huge numbers from him, but I think he’ll hook up on some long pass plays and throw a couple of touchdowns. More than I can say for Eli Manning this week, who has a very tough job on the road in Philly, which could turn out to be a field goal contest.

Lee Evans (@NE) or Torry Holt (@NYJ)?

Lee Evans is my boy, so of course I’m rolling with him this weekend. Expect the receiver to pull in a touchdown pass from at least 50 yards out. Torry Holt looked solid last week, but it’s going to take more than one or two solid outings before you’re going to bump Evans out of one of my line-up spots. Start Evans without hesitation.

Torry Holt had one of his best games of the year last week, catching 6-for-58 and a score. That seems to be the upper end of what you can expect out of him right now in any given week, especially with the emergence of Donnie Avery. That’s nice and all, but I’ll go for the home run hitter Lee Evans, who I think is a great play this week. Evans is facing a New England secondary which yields an average of 8 yards per completion and has given up 7 pass plays of 40 yards or more (one a 69 yard TD). Translated, it means the Patriots are susceptible to the long pass play, and I expect one of those patented Evans TD bombs this week.

Ryan Torain/Andre Hall (@CLE) or Jamal Lewis (vs. DEN)?

Smitty is a contributor to Fantasy Football Xtreme

Ryan Torain might be a stud in Weeks 10-16, but for now, it appears that Shanahan doesn’t want to rush Torain into that 20+ carry role just yet. Instead, he would like to smoothly transition the runner into the role, but if Selvin Young (groin) can’t play in Week 10, Shanhan will have no choice but to give Torain a full workload. Monitor our Breaking News Wire all week. If Young is out, start Torain. If Young is good to go, start Jamal Lewis this week and expect Torain’s breakout party to kickoff in Week 11.

Does anyone really have an idea what is happening in Denver with the running game? I’m not even sure that Mike Shanahan knows, so I am not endorsing anyone be in your lineup right now. That means Jamal Lewis is the default choice here and I expect the Browns to lay a heavy dose of him on the Broncos with the newly appointed Brady Quinn playing in his first game. 25+ carries is not out of the question for Lewis and that should yield more than 100 yards and a score (or two).

Eddie Royal (@CLE) or Donnie Avery (@NYJ)?

Smitty is a contributor to Fantasy Football Xtreme

Tough call here… both these guys are playing great football, but I go with Donnie Avery. Both are solid starts in Week 10 and both are capable of having big games, but Avery feels like the WR1 in St. Louis, whereas Royal is the WR2 in Denver. Royal is a great WR2, don’t get me wrong, but Brandon Marshall is still a top 5WR and I see him having a big game in Week 10. Expect both to have over 70 yards receiving and both could grab scores. However, I see Avery being capable of having well over that 70 yard mark, so as I said, I go with Avery if forced to pick just one to roll with.

Who would have thought we’d be having this discussion in week 10 – two rookie wide receivers fighting for a starting spot in your lineup? If you have them both, congrats, you made some wise draft decisions and have gotten a lot of bang for your draft buck. My pick here is Eddie Royal – in spite of Denver’s offensive woes their last two games, Royal has held up well and averaged 8 catches for 70 yards in those two games (plus a TD last week). With Brandon Marshall starting to feel the effects of those double and triple teams, Royal has been the beneficiary. I expect those averages to hold again this week against Cleveland – expect 7 for 85 and a score.
