Fantasy: [3/2/09] Matthew Stafford possesses all the physical traits a starting NFL quarterback needs; great arm strength, good size (6’3”, 237 pounds), accuracy, and great athleticism. And while he’s not the fastest quarterback you’ll ever see, he still ran at the top of this year’s class with a 4.84 40-yard dash time. Over his three year college career at Georgia, he finished with a mediocre TD to INT ratio of 51 TDs to 33 INTs – but a closer look at the numbers reveals he improved each season and finished his junior year with 235 completions, 3459 yards, 25 TDs and 10 INTs. To me, that’s key; you want to see a QB improve over his college career and Stafford did just that. He still needs to improve his decision making, but I have little doubt that can be corrected with good coaching at the next level. Stafford is likely the first QB off the board and a top 10 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, but where he goes has a lot to do with what happens in free agency. From a dynasty perspective, I think Stafford is the best of this year’s QB crop and has all the tools needed to be a starter in the NFL. He is probably not going to have an immediate impact like Matt Ryan did last season, but he should be ready to start being productive in a year or two in the right situation. As of now, Stafford projects as a late first, early second round draft pick in dynasty leagues.

Fantasy: [3/2/09] Mark Sanchez is not far behind Matthew Stafford in terms of his draft rating, and many believe he could be the first QB chosen come April. Physically, Sanchez comes in at 6’3, 237 pounds, runs a 4.88 40-yard dash, has decent arm strength, great accuracy and a quick release. The real question with Sanchez is have we seen enough of him to know whether he can succeed at the next level? Having started only 16 games, there is definitely some risk involved. That said, his 2008 season was a good one leading USC to a 12-1 record, throwing for 3,207 yards and 34 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. The Trojan pedigree is another factor playing in his favor, and many believe he has the intangibles to be a great leader on and off the field. As with Stafford, much will depend on who drafts him and what kind of coaching he gets at the next level – more than any other position the success or failure of rookie QBs depends heavily on those factors. From a fantasy perspective I don’t see Sanchez having an impact in 2009, but if you are looking for a QB to stash in your dynasty league Sanchez is definitely worth a shot as he is a good bet to eventually be an NFL starter. Look to draft Sanchez in the second round in your dynasty league.

Fantasy: [3/2/09] In terms of overall draft rating, Josh Freeman sits anywhere between #3 and #6 depending on who you talk to. His greatest asset in undoubtedly his arm strength, but his 6’6”, 250 pound frame is not far behind – think Daunte Culpepper. At the combine, his 9’11” broad jump ranked first among all QBs and his 4.97 40-yard dash was very good considering his size. Playing for Kansas State means Freeman wasn’t in a lot of big games, but he still managed to put up good numbers in both is sophomore and junior seasons – averaging 270 completions, 3100 yards, 19 TDs and 9 INTs over those two years. Overall, Freeman’s inconsistency does not necessarily project him as an NFL starter right away, he is probably more of a project QB who would benefit from sitting behind an established veteran and learning the game at a moderate pace. If he can get into that kind of situation, he definitely has the physical tools to develop into an NFL starter. If you are looking to stash him in a dynasty league, landing him in the 3rd or 4th round would be ideal.
