chucky: Typically in these types of auctions, you can ONLY nominate a player for zero when you are out of money. If you have a buck, you have to nominate that player for a buck, then your next guy is zero (because you're out of cash).

The strategy comes into play when you have zero and someone, or a couple people, still have a few bucks. Do you call your player out at zero before someone else calls that same player out at zero (remember you can't outbid since you have zero cash), or do you wait because you don't want to alert the remaining owners who have money about the player you like (because they can use their last buck or two to steal your zero dollar hopeful.

I like this style better, it makes it real fun at the end to plan all that out. You could wait until everyone is out of cash so you don't initiate a "bid" by the one few owners left who have a buck, but you run the risk of another owner bidding zero and the person with money passing on outbidding for that player.

Good times. Does that make more sense, Chucky? Great question.

Smitty:

I noticed you talked about leagues that permit zero dollar bids

If someone nominates a player is that team owner expected to add the player to his roster if nobody outbids him.

Say for example a team owner nominates Ladell Betts for $0 or $1 and nobody else is interested. I would assume that the nominator is now stuck with Ladell Betts which seems resonable to me

Every league flows different in terms of the money. I'll work on a more conservative set for you guys, no problem, but I play in several leagues and some have the kind of early spending you see here and some do not.

In Auction Rankings, the value don't have to add up to $2400. They can, but with this set we valued the players against the other players, not against a $200 purse x 12. It can be done that way and the next update can be that way.

I'll work on updating this to a more conservative approach. Check back in a bit.

These values are WAY too high! I'm very disappointed.

To illustrate...let's say we even target lower-level players to "save" $$$ after the higher priced guys are taken. We end up with:

QB - M.Schaub (QB12 for $20)
RB - C.Portis (RB12 for $62), D.McFadden (RB24 for $30)
WR - T.Owens (WR12 for $42), D.Avery (WR24 for $20)
TE - B.Scaife (TE12 for $13)

We have a very weak team...yet have spent $187 of our $200 budget on only 6 players using your values. C'mon, please re-evaluate this and put some realistic values for a $200 12-team league.

Some may be high, I agree, but I don't think they are that far off. Sure, money will run dry, and I have been in plenty of auction drafts where the top WR goes in the 60s and all of the money is spent before even Santana Moss types are scooped up. In these leagues, you can bid on players for zero dollars. Not every auction league allows for that, and that's why there is probably a difference in values with our set. When your league allows for zero dollar bidding, you will find the money gets spent fast because spending more for studs is a more attractive plan of attack when you can still land quality at zero later.

Hopefully that clears up some of that for you. Not all auction drafts have the same rules in spending. It tends to change things a lot on how people spend.

Some of these are really high. $67 for Fitz in a non-ppr league? Six WR for $60 or more? Absolutely wrong across the board. Your RB's alone when totalled come up to $1761. In a 12 team league with a $200 salary cap your entire economy is only $2400. With the money you project for your top ten WR ($575) and top ten RB ($731) you've theoretically spent $1306 of the overall economy on 20 players, with many yet to go to fill out your roster. Your RB ($1761) and WR ($1281) totals already far exceed that economy.

I know it's May, but I was hoping to see something realistic here.

Thanks, cnl1975!

Well the top Tight Ends are valued about the same as Knowshon Moreno, Marshawn Lynch (With heavy suspension) and receivers like Santonio Holmes. That seems about right for the top 2 or so tight ends, as they should be slotted right around those guys.

Each league values tight ends differently, though, so it isn't crazy to hear that some leagues have those guys in the 19 and under range.

Warner does deserve props but those other QBs right above him are all right there talent-wise.

I think it's Warner's age that concerns some staffers here. Sure, he might have another elite season in him, maybe two, but predicting that initial drop off season is tough and I think a lot of us just feel that with that risk of drop off around that blind corner, it just feels safer to roll with a guy like Ben Roethlisberger, who was a top 5 fantasy QB the year before last. I like Roethy a lot this year.

Rodgers isn't going to be ranked below him, so that leaves only Rivers (which is arguable for sure).

Great point and a very popular topic. Many still love Warner and they should. But don't count on a guy like Roethy in 2009, as that Steelers team is improving every season and Roethy is a proven top 5-6 fantasy QB just two seasons ago. I think he will return to that form, or at least top 5-7, in 2009.
