I know we focus on fantasy football here at Fantasy Football Xtreme, but I thought I’d throw together a quick 2009-2010 Fantasy Basketball article for those of you into fantasy basketball. Below I have my Top 10 Fantasy Basketball Rankings as if the 2009-2010 fantasy season started today (basic non-rotisserie scoring format). I have also listed a few players On The Rise for the 2009-2010 fantasy basketball season.

Top 10 Overall Fantasy Basketball Rankings For 2009-2010
  1. LeBron James
  2. Chris Paul
  3. Dwight Howard
  4. Dwyane Wade
  5. Kobe Bryant
  6. Carmelo Anthony
  7. Derron Williams
  8. Chris Bosh
  9. Kevin Durant
  10. Danny Granger

Players that just miss the cut: Dirk Nowitzki, Amare Stoudamire, Al Jefferson and Derrick Rose (yes, in his second year)

2009 Breakouts

Paul Millsap – The Utah forward was one of the league’s best when starting. He was a double-double lock with Boozer out of action and there is a good chance that Boozer will opt out this off-season leaving the starting gig to Millsap in 2009-2010. Don’t draft Millsap as even a top 15 overall player next year, because you don’t have to, but don’t be shocked if he is as good as a Danny Granger at season’s end. Millsap has that much upside — He just needs that starting spot.

OJ Mayo – May could take another full season to get to that elite level, but the talent is there. We could very well see a top 10-15 overall-type player by the end of the 2009-2010 season. This means that next year, not this upcoming year, Mayo could be a first-round grab. Now would be the time to trade for Mayo in dynasty leagues, because he can be had at the cost of a third- to fourth-round player right now.

2009 Surprises

Caron Butler – I realize the guy can’t stay healthy, but Butler plans on training with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant this off-season… He also claims that he will be in the best shape of his life in 2009-2010. Butler could be a huge bargain come 2009-2010 fantasy drafts and he can probably be had at bargain value right now in dynasty leagues. He is 29, but that doesn’t mean he can’t put together 2-3 more really solid fantasy seasons.

Gilbert Arenas – No one should be burning a first-rounder on Arenas given his injury history, but don’t think for one second that Arenas can’t get back to being a first-round talent in terms of games played. Will his knees hold up? Who knows? All we know is that he is worth the risk given that no one is treating him like even a second-round talent entering 2009-2010.

Xtremely Deep Sleepers

Morris Almond – If you’re in a larger dynasty league and have a spot to burn, consider scooping up Almond. He is an elite shooter and very underrated. Utah has solid guards, so it’s tough to envision an easy takeover for Almond at shooting guard, but the talent is there — All he needs is a shot.

DeAndre Jordan – He has a long road ahead of him, and he is clearly still a raw talent, but the sky is the limit if the opportunity is there. Watch some of his youtube footage and you will see the upside.

JaVale McGee – Again, like Jordan, McGee is extremely raw. Both Jordan and McGee are strictly dynasty prospects, but both could be elite centers if everything falls into place. There are no locks when you’re dealing with players this far off most everyone’s radars, but many NBA scouts and analysts have occasionally made comments about this kid suggesting that he has a very bright future in this league. Watch his youtube footage here — His raw ability will impress you.
