Fourth & 1 Debate: Which Mid-Round Pick Would You Discard?

Published: 09/19/2009 2:49 am by Smitty in Fantasy Articles

We have been asked to be a part of a weekly fantasy football roundtable debate, where a group of fantasy Sites attack the same question and we interlink the content within each of our Sites. This week the article can be found on RotoProfessor.com. The Weekly Article is called “Fourth & 1 Debate” and it will feature a different question each and every week. Each week, one Site will host the debate, but all of the Sites involved will announce the release of the article and provide the link to the debate. One of the weeks Fantasy Football Xtreme will host the debate. This will be a weekly feature.

The Sites involved include: FantasyFootballXtreme, rotoprofessor.com, JunkyardJake.com, lesterslegends.com, fantasypros911.com, kffl.com, top-fantasy-football.com, footballjabber.com

The question for debate this week is:

Fourth & 1 Debate: Which Mid-Round Pick Would You Discard?

One player I don’t trust this year is Steve Slaton. This advice especially goes for dynasty owners, but I firmly believe that Slaton won’t be near as consistent this year as he was last year. He wasn’t the only Texan to play awful in Week 1, but I still do not trust him and I’m not sure things will get much better for him in Week 2 against the Titans. Should fantasy owners sell-low? No. Slaton still commands quite a bit, and I’d advise fantasy owners to hold onto him for another week or two if they can’t get blue book value heading into Week 2. It’s not that the kid isn’t talented, clearly he is, but I think he is built to fill more of a Reggie Bush-type role, and unfortunately the Texans plan to use him like a full-time starter. He will breakdown and he won’t have a long career. What’s a long career? Well, longer than 2-3 years, and that’s all I project for Slaton. They won’t be full seasons either, and that’s why he is on my “Sell Now” list in all formats. Again, you don’t have to sell low, because he still commands quite a bit, but take a proactive approach and shop him while his value is still relatively high…. Smitty’s apprehension about Steve Slaton has proven to be right. He’s not getting the job on the ground done so far. Now to be fair, Tennessee has a pretty good running defense and so so the Jets. Of course, you hope your stud can at least come up with some decent numbers, but he hasn’t even come close. You gotta hang on to him and try and sell high when he does well against a weaker D.

I think you give Slaton a couple of weeks against non-elite defenses to rebuild his trade value and then try to move him. The next 3 weeks are JAC, OAK and @ARI, so the schedule will certainly work for him now. I still see 100+ all-purpose yards in 7 out of the last 9 games last year, and no reason why he should re-establish that level for some period of time.

The guy I am considering bailing on is SANTANA MOSS. I drafted him in the 6th round of a PPR redraft keeper/league so the price is a little skewed, but for reference, the 2 WRs drafted before & after were Berrian, Cotchery / Holt, Evans. I believed he was good value there as a solid wr3 and then waited on a TE and chose Cooley over Winslow. Now I’m scratching my head wondering how I can go through a season with 2 starters on a team being led by Jason Campbell. More disturbing, Moss has historically feasted on weak match-ups such as STL, DET, etc … but simply isn’t getting the targets as Campbell is playing an underneath game that features Cooley, Randle-El and Betts on 3rd down. Henderson, Stuckey, Manningham and Knox are on my WW (until tomorrow night when they will be auctioned off) Thoughts on dropping Moss for one of these guys?

I also have JAMES DAVIS. I saw the obvious upside and given Jamal Lewis’ age, likened this situation to Rudi Johnson / Kevin Smith a year ago and hoped that Davis would take-over by mid-season and be a borderline rb2/rb3 by end of year. Here’s the issue – In a 12 team, 16 player per roster league, how long do you wait on this guy? I see a team that has scored 1 offensive TD in 2 weeks and had an ugly drought at the end of last year, is led by a QB that poses no vertical threat, coached by a Bellichik disciple that prefers “package” i.e. committee based appraoches and BAL and PIT looming 4 times annually on the schedule. Sure Davis could be a lead member of a committee getting 60% of the carries next year. On the other hand, Betts, Shonn Greene, Bernard Scott are on the WW in my league. Considering time frame and upside, is he more valuable than these three?
