2009 Fantasy Football Start and Bench Advice: Week 8

10/29/2009 2:44 am by in Start Bench Advice

Here is our Week 8 Fantasy Football Start and Bench Advice for the 2009 Fantasy Football Season. Start ‘EM & Sit ‘Em Advice was meant to be bold, yet calculated. We know that and we understand that. We also understand that fantasy owners aren’t looking for answers to the obvious questions, which is why we have addressed more dilemma-like situations entering Week 8 of the 2009 fantasy football season.

Smitty’s Week 8 Thoughts

Buy Low, Then Start ‘Em

Despite being wrong about both Greg Jennings and Matt Forte bouncing back in Week 7, I stand by the same advice heading into Week 8. There are no better buy-low candidates heading into Week 8… and Forte is going to go absolutely nuts against that 31st ranked Cleveland rushing defense. Chicago needs to do something about that offense and they will turn to the ground so that they can get a small taste of offensive success…. they will then rebuild their offensive approach around this outing… for more on these two players, read this week’s Fourth & 1 Debate, which is strictly about buying low heading into Week 8.

My third "must-have" this week, before Week 8 actually gets underway, is Pierre Thomas. Go get this fantasy RB2 before people starting believing in him again. He should have a productive Monday night against the Falcons (23rd against the run). Pierre has the talent, and situation, to be a top 15 overall player moving forward. Know that.

Dynasty Corner

Go after Calvin Johnson in dynasty leagues before Week 8. He is coming off a bye, and even though he is relatively banged up, the Lions receiver should have a solid Week 8 outing at home against the Lions. I’m not saying that fantasy owners will be able to steal him away from his current owners, as Johnson still commands top 10 value at the position in dynasty formats, but his value will never be lower than it is right now. Take a stab and see what’s what… Redraft leaguers should also go after the stud via trade, as he could truly finish as a top 5 fantasy wide receiver down the stretch.

Week 8: Don’t Buy Into It

Sit Ricky Williams this week. Don’t get me wrong, if you’re extremely weak at the position this week, due to byes or injuries, Ricky is a solid temporary option… but if anyone is expecting Ricky to play like a fantasy RB2 moving forward, you better get a check-up from the neck up. In fact, trading Ricky while his value is high is advised. Ronnie Brown is the feature back in Miami and he is actually a good buy-low guy himself given his mediocre Week 7 performance. Expecting Ricky to be consistent for fantasy owners is a lot to ask given his role, which is going to be hit and miss on a weekly basis. The Dolphins face the Jets in Week 8, a rushing defense that ranks 22nd in the league against the run. Brown should have a great outing in this one and Williams should get his usual 60 or so yards and shot at one score (again, decent, but merely a temporary line-up fix).

Week 8 Start & Bench Advice

Name a player that you’d start in Week 8 over relatively big name fantasy players ?

tavaner is a contributor of fantasy footballxtreme Miles Austin is my nominee as a must-start, if not a surprise start of the week.  This may not be a big surprise until you consider that I see him as a top 5WR at the position this week.  I’d have him in the line-up alongside Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Reggie Wayne, Marques Colston and Vincent Jackson — And ahead of such dependables as Roddy White, Anquan Boldin, DeSean Jackson, Calvin Johnson, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.  The Seattle secondary has been very generous to talented WRs and teams that field two solid receivers.  I expect another big week out of this emerging star.

xyz is a Fantasy Football Xtreme contributor Mike Sims-Walker is my surprise start of the week at WR. He faces the Titans this week, a team who has not been able to stop anyone through the air, and the last time these two teams met back in week four, Sims-Walker caught 7 passes for 91 yards and two TDs. I see no reason to think he can’t repeat those numbers, and for my money he is as good a start as anyone this week. Find a way to play him even if that means benching guys like Greg Jennings, Vincent Jackson, Brandon Marshall and even Anquan Boldin. I wouldn’t go so far as to suggest benching the top studs at the position, but I honestly wouldn’t consider it that crazy of a move if you did. This kid has been on my radar since he was a rookie last season and own him in a few of my own dynasty leagues. He is one of my favorite up and coming players, and I believe he becomes a top 12-15 WR as early as next season. If you have a chance to trade for him in a dynasty league, do it now while his value is still relatively low. There are usually very small windows of opportunity to acquire guys just before they turn into studs – that’s the gut feeling I am getting with him.
