Message to the media: Hey Tim Tebow, we believe in you here at FFX!

Everyone here at Fantasy Football Xtreme knows that I make bold predictions often, and that I have no problem going against the grain when I feel both general fantasy worlds and NFL media sources are way off base… Well, I can’t help but step-up and call out the main-stream media on all this “Tim Tebow” hate.

The Real “Tim Tebow Potential”
The “Tim Tebow Hate”

All of this Tim Tebow hate is getting ridiculous… Let’s kickoff the “ridiculous” with CBS Sports’ Boomer Esiason. According to a USAToday story, Esiason doesn’t believe that Tebow has “a prayer” of earning a starting quarterback spot in the NFL. Esiason went on to say:

“What (former Broncos coach) Josh McDaniel saw in him God only knows. Maybe God does know — because the rest of us don’t,” Esiason said.

The same article by USAToday also suggests that CBS game analyst Randy Cross feels that “critics, particularly a hostile news media, are hating on Tebow for wearing his religious beliefs on his sleeve.” If this is true for anyone, shame on you!

Almost all of the negatively-driven hate directed at Tim Tebow is unwarranted, but unfortunately, it affects the passer’s potential and his ability to earn back a starting quarterback job… Tebow was the Broncos’ projected starter to begin the off-season, and he earned that starting quarterback job during the Broncos final three 2010 regular season games… the team benched Kyle Orton and inserted Tebow — and Tebow delivered! So, after earning the job on the field in 2010, the passer is now said to be competing for the team’s third quarterback job. Now, not every media source is out to get Tim Tebow, and we give Rotoworld.com some props for also going against the grain a bit with their reporting on this topic, but most everyone else is just regurgitating the uncalled for garbage that continues to damage the young passer’s future.

Will Tim Tebow ever start another NFL game? Honestly, I don’t know the answer to that question… Just because I see “elite” talent in a player, that doesn’t always mean others do. Clearly many do not. Doubting a player is one thing, but this media-driven garbage is damaging, and Tebow doesn’t have an ounce of trade value at this point. This is awful, because he should command a lot, and a team like Oakland would turn their franchise around with a guy like this under center… Oakland, are you listening?

If Denver does truly doubt Tebow as much as it’s being reported (constantly), Denver did themselves no favors by not aggressively refuting the hate-driven reports on their young passer. They could have traded Tebow for quite a bit if they had preserved his perceived value…

Tim Tebow’s 2010 Stats

Take a look at Tebow’s stats from last year…

Week 15 (@OAK): 138 passing yards, 1 Pass TD, 0 INT, 78 rushing yards and 1 Ru TD
Week 16 (vs. HOU) 308 passing yards, 1 Pass TD, 1 INT, 27 rushing yards and 1 Ru TD
Week 17 (vs. SD) 205 passing yards, 2 Pass TDs, 2 INTs, 94 rushing yards and 1 Ru TD

In a standard fantasy scoring format, Tebow racked up 76.94 points in those three games, which equates to 25.6 fantasy points per contest. In fantasy leagues where passers get 6 points per TD and 1 point per 20 yards passing, his points per-game-average in that three-game span jumps to 30.48 points per game (91.45 points in 3 games).

Given he did all this in really his first three games under center, that’s extremely impressive. Imagine if this kid had been given the proper preseason support and direction!

Could Kyle Orton have a good 2011 campaign? Sure, he is a good passer, and apparently he won’t have to look over his shoulder and worry about Tebow this season… That still doesn’t mean that Tebow wouldn’t have extremely outperformed Orton at season’s end, as again, the Broncos felt the need to bench a solid-playing Orton last season in hopes for a spark (which, again, Tebow did in fact provide)…

Three contests are a small sample to pull from, I know, and I also know that there is a lot that goes on in practice that most media outlets do not get to see… Well, still… I don’t care. I see “elite” talent in this passer, a quarterback that is often called the “most decorated college player of his generation.” Sometimes all one needs is a glimpse at someone’s play and a conclusion of “elite” can be drawn… we have been doing this for 7-straight NFL seasons, and with great success… Tebow has elite-like talent, and given that teams like Miami, Oakland, Cincinnati, Washington, Seattle, Buffalo and even Chicago aren’t even attempting to make a move for this quarterback makes me question the scouting personnel that each of those organizations has in place.

Attention Tim Tebow: We believe in you, and we have been scouting players here at Fantasy Football Xtreme for going on 7 years… we predicted the rise of Michael Turner in 2008, the rises of Arian Foster, LeSean McCoy and Mike Wallace in 2010… Tebow, if you get the shot, my friend, I know you will take the league by storm!

Tebow is a gamer. He is also a winner. His leadership is infectious and people just follow instinctively. Anyone who is unorthodox or who stylistically departs from the norm threatens to bring change to the system and some find that frightening and unsettling. These types of people are often polarizing and draw just as much criticism as they do fans and supporters.
Fantasy wise, if he was starting, I think he could be much like Vick. High risk and high reward. 40+ points two weeks in a row then a single digit weekend just when you need his potential big numbers the most.
One thing anyone that anyone who has watched this guy can see is that he has the “it”. You know “it” when you see “it”. You cannot acquire “it”. You cannot buy “it”. “It” seems to grind out tough wins. “It” can totally blow the doors off an opponent. You cannot even really define “it”. But all the great ones have “it”. And you either have “it”, or you don’t. And like him or not…He’s got “it”.

    Nice post, nordypooh.

Another thing doubters aren’t doing is allowing a young player to develop. Every quarterback struggles a bit during his first season starting. Tebow got three games and people are already judging his accuracy, QB rating, etc… He is a winner and a game day player, and I just hope he finds an environment where he can start and he finds that environment as fast as possible.

He needs an open and patient enviroment and a development coach like Josh McDaniels to bring his technique, technical game and reading ability up to par with his intangibles.

Any doubters still lingering out there ? :)
