Cordarrelle Patterson (WR)

I currently have Cordarrelle Patterson out of Tennessee as my #4 WR in the 2013 draft class, however I have a feeling he’ll be moving up very shortly. This kid is pure athleticism and was one of the most fun players to watch in college football. He’s no joke once he gets his hands on the ball and with deceptive unorthodox moves, leaves defenders flat footed. Patterson possesses nice size at 6-3 205, and has nearly limitless potential. If he can impress during the NFL Combine he could shoot up the draft boards and potentially be the top receiver in the class. Patterson made SEC defenders look like children on some plays with his explosiveness and (sometimes too excessive) east to west running style. If you haven’t seen young Patterson’s highlight video…do so now. Thank me later.

The problems that might scare NFL teams from drafting Patterson in the first round are the finer points of the position in route running, consistency, and reading the defense. This is also Patterson’s first Division 1 season, as he played his last 2 at junior colleges where he was an All-American. Patterson’s receiving numbers fell off in some games, and he only passed the 100 yard mark once all year against Troy.

That being said Patterson has already improved on the nuances of the WR position with his year at Tennessee, and should be able to continue until to do so before the NFL Combine. Patterson also excelled at running the ball, which is always a huge bonus to fantasy owners. He can make a small play into a big play at any given moment, and the attractiveness of his raw athleticism could move his draft stock way up. Now call me crazy but he’s the exact kind of WR that the Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders always used to go after…and usually didn’t get. I know he’s not around anymore, but I have a hunch that he’ll somehow end up in the black hole. Patterson should be a 1st-2nd round dynasty selection, depending on where he lands, and is worth a flier pick in standard leagues because of his upside.
