Giovani Bernard will be in the running to be the first running back drafted this year but he’s got some durability issues to address first. A torn ACL in 2010, shoulder, and missing a few games in 2012. If he gets a clean bill of health at the combine he could find his way into the first round of the NFL draft but even if he doesn’t he’ll impact the team that drafts him immediately.
He led the nation in punt returns in 2012 and the ACC in rushing, scoring, punt returns and all purpose yards. He has good speed but not elite speed, anything above a 4.48 40 yard dash at the combine would lock him into the first round. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and is explosive with great peripheral vision. It may take him a year to build up his body and learn to pass block before assuming a lead back role. He could sneak into the first round with a great combine but is more likely an early second round pick.
In dynasty drafts he’ll be an early first rounder and in leagues that reward return yardage he’ll be in the mix for the first choice. Redraft owners can expect him to get 12-15 carries a game making him a RB2/3 depending on the team that drafts him.
