Wes Welker has signed with the Denver Broncos shifting the power among the top AFC teams. By swooping in and signing Welker the Broncos have assembled the most fearsome wide receiver corps in the AFC.

Welker gives the Broncos the best slot receiver in football. He’ll help move the chains and with Peyton Manning’s quick release Welker will continue to produce with at least WR3 value in ppr leagues. After six seasons and 672 receptions Welker seems unlikely to catch 100 balls this year but his fantasy football value is outweighed by the shift in power his signing represents.

There is an overlooked factor with Welker’s signing. Peyton Manning has lost some zip on the ball. He adjusted well last season but with Welker he has an incredible receiving option that will allow him to take the open underneath routes. He also enables Welker to run to the open spots on the field, something he did with the Patriots. Team fans and fantasy owners can expect Welker to do a lot of off-season work with Manning to develop the chemistry necessary to success.

Fantasy implications are tough to project right now but off the top it seems like Peyton manning is the big winner with Welker’s after the catch ability with Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and Wes Welker all lose fantasy value. Welker’s 100 targets have to come from somewhere. Thomas looks like a high end WR2 / low end WR1, Decker and Welker are anywhere from low end WR2’s to high end WR3’s. Take a look at the early season projections, they are up to date.
