Rashard Mendenhall (RB)

Rashard Mendenhall has signed a one year “prove it” deal with the Arizona Cardinals coached by his former offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. Arians likes to run the ball and use play action and Mendenhall is a good fit for that scheme. In addition Arians has stated he believes in feature backs, not committee’s, so any concern fantasy owners need not worry about a time share with Ryan Williams.

Mendenhall has already produced two 1000 yard rushing seasons and would have had a third had he not torn his ACL late in 2011. He can run between the tackles, catch the ball out of the backfield and is a solid pass protector. The Cardinals hope Mendenhall returns to his prior form and that the addition of he will take some of the offensive pressure off Larry Fitgerald. To an extent that should be true. What remains to be seen is what the Cardinals do to upgrade their offensive line through free agency and the draft.

The Cardinals have the worst offensive line in the NFL at the moment and without upgrades it won’t matter how talented Mendenhall and Fitzgerald are, they’ll be inconsistent. While Mendenhall has run behind poor offensive lines in Pittsburg the overall talent there was much better than the situation he is stepping into in the desert. Color me skeptical. Mendenhall looks like a 7th round pick at this point, RB27 or so until that o-line is addressed. He may produce 1000/9 rushing along with 24 receptions with about 160 receiving yards.
