Andy Reid has himself a new toy in Kansas City this year–and no, not referring to Alex Smith. Reid may have left the incredibly talented LeSean McCoy back in the city of brotherly love, but Jamaal Charles is about as close as it comes to matching that type of skill set. Both players stand 5’11″, with Charles about 9 lbs lighter than McCoy. Reid is thrilled with the offensive line he has inherited in Kansas City, and will be giving Jamaal the opportunity to become one of the top 3 fantasy running backs in PPR leagues.

In LeSean McCoy’s past three seasons as the lead back for Andy Reid in Philadelphia, he has averaged 5 passing targets per game, while catching an average of 4 passes per contest. It is those extra 4 points per game that sets fantasy football RB’s into the “elite” category in PPR leagues (just ask Arian Foster). Jamaal Charles has been the benefactor of 40ish receptions per season thus far in his career, and that number should skyrocket this upcoming season. Even in non-PPR leagues, the extra receiving yards will be a bonus.

Charles finished the 2012 campaign 4th in the NFL in rushing yards, with only 284 carries. The Chiefs drafted tackle Eric Fisher with the #1 overall pick this year to help what was already one of the NFL’s best offensive lines in the league. Fellow back, Peyton Hillis, was handed the ball 85 times last season, but he is no longer in KC. The Chiefs drafted Knile Davis from Arkansas this year in the 3rd round to replace Hillis, so he will be next in line to give Charles a breather, but should not see a significant workload.

Schedule is also a bonus for Charles, as the Chiefs have been handed the league’s 5th easiest schedule, with fantasy playoff matchups weeks 15-17 against Oakland, Indianapolis, and San Diego. Look for 2013 to be the year that Jamaal Charles, under Andy Reid’s offense, takes the leap and finishes in the top 5 for fantasy running backs.
