Kenbrell Thompkins has garnered a lot of buzz from Patriot beat writers for his performance on the field since the opening of rookie camp. He earned first team reps coming out of OTAs and minicamps, and he began to rise on the depth chart. Thompkins started the Patriots first preseason game against the Eagles, and continues to work with the first team offense. If the season started today he would line up as a starting wide receiver with future Hall of Famer Tom Brady as his quarterback.

That is a meteoric rise for the talented former Cincinnati Bearcat receiver after his troubled past caused 32 teams to bypass him during the NFL draft.

Dynasty owners should already have Kenbrell Thompkins on their short list to draft or add via free agency, and with the 2013 season less than a month away Thompkins has inserted himself into the late round flyer discussion in redraft leagues. What FFX members need to know is what kind of receiver he appears to be.

Kenbrell Thompkins produced four receptions for 23 yards in his first NFL action, suggesting that he will be a possession receiver and beat writer Jeff Howe offers the following insights. In short, he runs sharp routes, has good hands, knows the offense and Brady trusts him. Most importantly, he is running a lot of routes that former tight end Aaron Hernandez ran for the Patriots.

While there is still a long way to go before we know if Kenbrell Thompkins will start one play in particular stands out from his first NFL action against the Eagles. While lining up for a play Thompkins redirected Josh Boyce to another position across the field where he should have lined up. Knowing all the receiver positions puts him ahead of the curve and will earn him significant playing time during the season.

He is currently being drafted as a WR5 in the 13th round in redraft leagues, and it would not surprise if he’s drafted by the 11th round or higher come late August. When you are considering a flyer at the end of your draft, why not add one who has a Tom Brady throwing him the ball.

Great article! I do think Thompkins is getting a little over hyped though. I think an under the radar receiver who will out shine Thompkins is Josh Boyce, out of TCU. One thing is for sure, one or two receivers from the bunch of Amendola, Dobson, Boyce, Sudfield, and Thomkins will emerge with big numbers.
