Maurice Jones-Drew is once again saying, “Take me #1 in your fantasy football draft.” But should we be listening?

Okay, so maybe #1 is a bit high…okay, WAY too high, but to think he will not finish as an RB2 at the least this year could be unwise. As MJD stated in a recent interview, last year he was leading the league in rushing yards until his “foot fell off.” Before last season, Jones-Drew was never much of an injury-risk in fantasy football. In fact, you could count on him getting 300+ carries and close to double-digit touchdowns year in and year out.

Last year is just what it is–last year. He is since over the Lisfranc injury, and as we saw with Adrian Peterson’s case (a.k.a. Superman), and even Jamaal Charles, almost a year off isn’t always such a bad thing. His body is well rested if nothing else, and ready to take another 300+ carry pounding. Jacksonville learned the hard way last season, they are not a phenomenal passing team, nor do they have the proper quarterback to go that route. In 2013, they want to get back to the basics, even though their uniforms might not echo that sentiment (and yes, that was a bust…they are hideous).

What I expect out of MJD this season is his standard 300+ carries, 1300 yards, and 8 touchdowns. You add in 40 catches, 300 yards, and another TD, those are nice enough numbers to put him on the cusp of being a Top 10 back in standard leagues (13.4 ppg), and Top 15 in PPR leagues (15.9 ppg). Look for “Pocket Hercules” to have a serious rebound in 2013, as he will be striving to prove the football world wrong in his quest to take back the NFL rushing title.
