Jordan Reed (TE) – Rookie

Jordan Reed is a rookie to keep an eye in redraft leagues. His time may have come, and the feeling here is that if not this week, soon. Reed is a pass catching tight end that many saw as Fred Davis’ eventual replacement. Davis is in his contract year and is due to be a free agent in 2014, but that plan may be accelerating. Jordan Reed played most of the second half against Green Bay in Week 2 and now Davis is on the injury list after Friday’s practice.

Jordan Reed has seen his snap percentage increase each week and he played 48% of the offensive snaps in Week 2, more than any other tight end on the roster. Heading into Week 3, with Fred Davis questionable, the possibility exists that Jordan Reed steps into the pass catching role at tight end against the Detroit Lions. The Lions haven’t really played a tight end who gets consistent targets, and their secondary is beatable.

Through two games Reed has gotten nine targets (team high at the position) and caught eight passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Though he has played sparingly he has been productive and after two games he is fifth on the target list but only five targets behind the number two target, Santana Moss. If Reed backs up a starting opportunity with a productive afternoon he could force the switch at tight end sooner than expected, and it would not surprise if he ends the season as the second most targeted receiver in Washington.

When you combine the injury to Fred Davis, a Redskin defense that is struggling, and Robert Griffin throwing the ball (89 passes in two games) as he plays catchup, the elements are there for Jordon Reed to shine if he gets the start. We won’t know for sure until about an hour before game time, but he is someone to add to your watch list or roster as a speculative add, just in case.
