According to a Tweet by Jay Glazer, free agent RB LaDainian Tomlinson has signed a two year contract with the Jets.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Clearly Shonn Greene's dynasty value is untouched by this signing, but the Jets organization wouldn't have pushed so hard to land LaDainian Tomlinson if they didn't have plans to use him in 2010. Of course Shonn Greene will need some rest from time to time in '10, but despite having an awful 3.3 yards-per-carry last season, it's important to note that LaDainian did score 12 rushing touchdowns. It's a good thing for Greene owners to have a guy like Leon Washington spelling the power back, but LT2 will be taking the wrong kind of touches away from Greene in 2010 -- And on just 10-12 carries per game, Tomlinson could stay healthy all season long and vulture TDs all season long. If you frequented FFX last season, well, then you know how much I like Shonn Greene, but LT2 landing in New York isn't a great thing (for this season at least), that's all I'm saying. Greene will still play well this season and his time to explode is near, but we still might be a year away from his monster breakout season. The great news here is that he will learn how to play the game from the best. This hiccup could actually make Greene a better player in the long run.
Tavaner: Color me skeptical. San Diego fed LT the ball at the goal line last year. He may or may not get that same preferential treatment from the Jets. I also wonder if he has much left or if he can take a more physical AFC East. Add in an attitude that sulks if not being featured and I can see 3rd down role with 8-10 touches a game. He'll bring more harm to Leon Washington's role than he will Greene's.
X: It is sort of a surprise the Tomlinson picked the Jets over the Vikings - I speculate that had a lot to do with not knowing the status of Favre for the upcoming season. No matter, the real debate now is how this affects Shonn Greene's value for 2010 and beyond. From a dynasty perspective I think it does little to Greene's value, and the smart owner would look to see if the Greene owner in their league has discounted his price any. You never know. From a seasonal perspective, this is bound to drop Greene down lower than he ordinarily would have gone, and it could lead to an undervalue come draft day. As for Tomlinson himself, he has slowed considerably and his days of fantasy relevance are long gone. Consider him an RB3 at best, worse if he continues to have health issues.
According to Jay Glazer, the Denver Broncos have acquired QB Brady Quinn for RB Peyton Hillis and conditional draft picks.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: The writing was on the wall for Quinn when the new CLE front office traded for Seneca Wallace and signed Jake Delhomme. It's a good risk for Denver to try and rebuild Quinn, as they need a QB of the future and Josh McDaniels can work with him. Quinn is probably familiar with the offense, as it is similar to the pro-style offense that Charlie Weis ran at Notre Dame. I'd still think Kyle Orton will remain the starting QB due to his solid play last season - This will give Quinn time to learn and not be under so much pressure. As for Hillis, will he go back to a FB or get a chance to run the ball to compliment Harrison?
According to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli, the Carolina Panthers may "lock up" RB DeAngelo Williams with a contract extension before the start of the 2010 NFL season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: DeAngelo Williams is a free agent in 2011 and will be commanding some serious cash when the time comes, so we're not so sure Carolina and Williams will be on the same page when this conversation takes place. It sounds like it's heading in the right direction for Carolina, but my guess is when all is said and done (and reported fully), Carolina won't likely offer Williams elite running back money, and Williams will most definitely be demanding and commanding it. Anything is possible, and Carolina would be smart to lock up both Williams and Jonathan Stewart for years and years to come, but my early guess is Williams is elsewhere in 2011 (also great news for Jonathan Stewart owners). Williams is one of the most underrated dynasty running backs in the game right now given he could be elsewhere in 2011. He will turn 27 next month.
