The forum has been extremely slow this week – but only at work. Any ideas?

I'm clueless…but we do have some guys in the know. I believe Hambone or X might be able to suggest something. Got a firewall at work?

Mine is actually slower at home. The new forum in general has been slower in my estimation – not enough to get me crazy, but I think the extra bells and whistles definitely make it so it takes longer to load.

I would suggest clearing your temp internet files out to see if that helps. If you are using IE, go to tools>options and click the button to clear them (IE7 is "delete browsing history").

As its been mentioned, certain work places have firewalls up that slow it down. Another is that MOST browsers store caches of sites so that they can load faster. Its like pre-storing information that you know will be needed everytime. Some work places have settings that GREATLY reduce the number of sites you can cache. Then it takes longer to load because it is truly loading the site every time you visit and click on links. Again just ideas.

Oh, and your page refresh setting within your browser will affect load times too. If you are setting it to reload the page every time, all those icons have to download each time you go back to the same page. If you set it to Automatic, it will likely lessen the burden of having to load the images each time you go back to the same page.
In IE, this is in tools > options and under temporary internet files (in IE6) click settings and choose Automatic.

i tested using the webdevelopers toolbar in firefox and the thing that takes the longest to load is the googlesyndication ads . . .
btw it is taking more then two and half minutes to load each page

yea last time it took 6.15 minutes!! this is making it quite difficult to participate.

another bit of info – the ads are not showing on my page at all – even when it is done loading. I must be blocking the google ads somehow.

All very good ideas. The amount of add-ons that you have running within your browser can have a dramatic effect on how your browser loads. I try to keep these add-ons at a bare minimum, as they all utilize resources and slow down your system.

One thing I like to do once a week or so is run Adaware to clean up spyware. This is a freebie from downloads.com, and is quite a nice little program.

For me I am just being slow at work because of the forum. I need an assistant I think, I'm running that by my boss later.

Of course, it could have something to do with your Internet link at work. It could be that the connection to your ISP is not so good. Is it only when you're on the FFX forums that you notice things are slow, or are other sites slow too?

I find the opposite. Since the new format my work and home computers seem to load it xtremely quick. i used to have the 3-5 minute loading problem if I didnt just sit and keep hitting refresh. Since the change I hardly ever even have a delay. Is almost instant now from both locations.

I appreciate the input guys.
the problem is only on ffextreme and it is not browser specific. (IE and firefox both)
I ran Adaware – thanks Hambone . . . no dice

I googled the issue and it seems that other forum users have run into similar issues . . .

tried turuning of firebug. no change

I think it is significant that I see no ad at the top of the page – is there one there that others do see?

yeah, there's always the Rotowire ad at the top right of the page.

Are you running IE7? Have you tried updating from the Microsoft Update site?

upon further testing I discovered that other sites serving google syndicated ads are also loading verrrrrry slowly.

so the problem is obviously tied to google ads . . .
