Are you building a dynasty? Fantasy Football is no longer just an August-December thing. Dynasty leagues are becoming more and more popular and all of you year-round nuts are probably starving for some dynasty info. Well, this edition of “Building A Dynasty” will focus on Steelers rookie RB Rashard Mendenhall. Expect more articles like this one as we head toward August.
Rashard Mendenhall | PIT RB
Rashard Mendenhall is the next big thing. Call it bold, call it a gut instinct with insufficient evidence — call it whatever you want — but the bottom line is that this kid is going to be a star.
The 5-11, 225-pound running back has a perfect combination of size and speed in order to excel at the NFL level. He spit out 1,681 yards and 19 total touchdowns at Illinois last season, and if you haven’t seen any film on this kid, I suggest that you stop reading this article and take… []

I hope you are right Smitty! I think I could write a chapter in your book on running backs. These are mine……….
Brown, Ronnie MIA RB – 4
Mendenhall, Rashard PIT RB – 6
Peterson, Adrian MIN RB – 8
Stewart, Jonathan CAR RB – 9
Taylor, Chester MIN RB – 8
If it sounds like I am bragging……you just might be right.

Drafted him as my #2 and paired him with Westbrook in a recent 14 team dynasty draft, so I'm drinking the Kool-Aid. :)
Still like Stewart slightly better, but I think both will turn out to be studs.

I'm trying to trade for Mendy in our second Dynasty Expert League… Own him in one, but that's not enough :)

Quick question- does anyone know how much he actually weighs? It says 210 on your write up, and I know NFL.com has his weight there too, but I've seen it 224 and 225 in other places. Not that 210 isn't big enough, but 224 would be better IMO.

Tough to say. 224 is listed in a ton of places, but so is 210.
I'll see if I can find a link for his weigh in for the combine.

Illinois RB Rashard Mendenhall measured 5'11/225 at Friday's Combine weigh-in.
Solid.

Fixed the weight above. Good catch. Yea, he is a bigger guy than 210, but I believe he was 210 as a junior. He could play anywhere between 218 and 230 in the NFL. 225-230 is perfect for 5-11. He has a grip of speed and quickness for the size.

Swear I'm not trying to steal you're Mendy highlight here (and feel free to deleate this if it gets bad) BUT Jonathan Stewart is 5-11 and 230 which you claim is perfect for the NFL. He ran track at Oregon and has been timed in the 4.3's for a 40 yard dash. He benched more reps then Mendy at the combine. So he is 100% bigger, faster, and stronger then Mendy. With the loss of Fanica he's running behind a better O-Line and he isn't stuck behind a pro-bowl RB in his prime. Talk about a dynasty builder!

Stewart is built built for the NFL as well. That doesn't mean Mendy isn't the perfect size/build himself. Both have great frames for that next level, but I see more talent and ability in Mendy… I just do. There is no other way to say it and with these rooks, none of us have hardcore proof to support such claims. I wouldn't call you nuts for liking Stewart as the next top 5RB – you're right about his frame, and I've never argued that he is NFL ready… but I see him more as a consistent top 12-15 overall pick in the coming years (which is good) and Mendy up inside the top 8 (with ease, if healthy). It's that simple for me. I see it. My gut has brought me pretty far in this business, so when I see it I scream it. It's that simple sometimes even if it doesn't seem scientific :) – As I always say, sometimes you don't have a lot to go on and you have to throw stats and logic aside and go with your gut. You can argue it all you want, there is definitely room for debate with he rooks each and every year. That's what makes dynasty leagues so fun.

As always, it depends on your team, but If I remember your team, you have a great 2008 team so it makes a bit tough. Player for player I make the trade, sure. Like you, I have a great 2008 team as well, so there is some hesitation. Not for the long-term, but with my Expert League team, i have:
Romo, AP, LJ, Turner (I start all three) and my WRs are Colston, Chad and my TE is Heap.
Killer line-up! Mendy is ahead of LJ on my personal dynasty rankings, but if he gets worked into the line-up slowly (which is possible) I lose a lot of scoring in my line-up, as I start three backs. By mid-season he could be coming along nicely, but not sure I can afford the missing points if he isn't getting starter type carries right away. Even sharing carries in 2008, as I state in the article, he could throw down a 1000-yard season and 8 or so scores. Great rookie year. Well, LJ could rush for 1400 yards and score 14 or 15 total touchdowns. Tough to lose that 2008 production when I'm set to be one of the better teams this year (barring injuries).
I think I still may make the trade (my trade) because of how solid Mendy could be in the future years, even 2009… if that makes you feel any better, but it is a tough trade based on the situation.

With #1, #2 and #4 this year, you've given me a lot to think about. I'm locked on McFadden so I need to figure out my plan thereafter. The problem is… now that Forte may get the nod… I like all 4 RBs a lot and I'm unsure of the best strategy to maximize my picks. I guess my chances of landing a good RB are pretty good though with this crew. I'm tempted to snag Forte at #2 because I like the guys who will play immediately (if that remains the case). Then I could let him make the tough decision (IMO) between Stew/Mendy for me. I'm losing my mind… please help

You could land McFadden, Stewart and Mendy if Mendy is dropping in your league like in some. I wouldn't risk it, though, but I've seen Mendy go at the four spot before.

I'd grab McFadden at 1, Mendy at 2, then let dude make decision between Forte and Stewart. If he's infatuated with Forte's situation like a lot are (including myself), you might be able to snatch Stewart at #4.
