These two questions were asked several different ways over the last week, so I decided to address them in “rant” fashion — Enjoy.

Question

Smitt, I am in a 12 team dynasty league and the league has a basic scoring format that is not ppr. I was thinking of trading Ladainian Tomlinson now while I can still get something. What do you think I should go after. I also have Brady, Lynch, R. Moss, S. Smith (car), A. Gonzalez, A. Gates and the 1.01. Please help.

Answer

James, I have one word for you — Stop! Stop right where you are and think about what you’re saying my man! Don’t trade the guy with the “while I still can” mentality… If you want to trade him and get some youth, fine, go after it, but trade him like the top five dynasty running back running back that he is! Don’t think that Tomlinson is a top five dynasty running back anymore? I realize Tomlinson turns 29 just before the 2008 NFL Season begins, but if Priest Holmes can rush for 1,615 yards, pull in 672 receiving yards and score 24 total TDs at the age of 29, so can Tomlinson.

Not only was Holmes a monster at the age of 29, he exploded again the following season when he was 30 going on 31, posting 1,420 rushing yards, 690 receiving yards and 27TDs (2003). Granted LT2 has carried the football over 300 times in all seven of his NFL seasons, but the elite talent has been relatively healthy for seven straight seasons (aside from his recent 2007 MCL injury) and he takes care of himself like no other.

Again, trade Tomlinson if you want youth, but demand top five-like talent in return, even if in a package-format. That said, with the team that you currently have listed above, I’d drive Tomlinson for another season and go after your league’s title. I know two years sounds short my man, but it isn’t, even in a dynasty league! If you look too far into the future, the “now” will pass you right by.

Ideas for a trade: A package of players like Michael Turner (or MJD-type) & a Marques Colston… or one single player like Frank Gore… or the 1.02 rookie pick with a major upgrade from Anthony Gonzalez

Everybody on here is guilty of the “while I still can”. That is basically saying I got no chance to win, it is the biggest mistake of keeper leagues. Ride out your studs, you owe it to them. Keep trading guys early for younger players keeps you out of contention. Players like TO or Chad Johnson, LT or LJ are going to play well this year and trading them for multiple average guys doesn't help. Just my 2 cents.

If you do trade them it has to obnoxious trade that is too good to refuse.

I agree, and I’ve said it before. I think we get caught up a lot in dynasty in “getting younger”.

Yeah, you don’t want to have the Shaun Alexander scenerio play out, but if you draft well and plan well, you should have younger players coming in behind him to pick up where he left off, or close.

If you keep going younger you’ll never compete. As Haimez pointed out, a guy like TO is going to have a huge year, but because he is 34-35 people are discounting him. Nothing has changed on that offense, he is healthy and ready to roll. Just an example, but the same could be said for LT.

The only way I would deal someone, is if you want to use them to upgrade at another position. If you are strong at RB and want to upgrade to a top notch QB, then yes I’d consider doing it. LT for Brees and McGahee/Barber…something like that.

Funny you should mention LT and TO. I recently traded both players in a league I won last year. I have to admit that age was a factor in my decision but it was not the only reason. I traded TO to get DMC who I think will be a top back and would eventually replace LT as my RB1. I also have Gore. Then I used the shotgun approach to see what I can get for LT. I had a few offers but decided to accept Barber/F. Jones for LT/J. Hester. Needless to say, I like Barber a lot and getting F. Jones was a plus IMO. I am well aware of the numbers I am losing with the trade and it may seem that I have given up the season. Not even close. With the RB's mentioned along with Brees, R. Moss, R. Wayne, S. Holmes, and Shockey. I still have a top 4 team in this 12 team league. I just thought that I had enough talent to take the inherent risk and still remain very competitive. Not to mention younger. I would never have done the trade if I thought I had the best team and the clear favorite to win the league. That just wasn't the case. The top 4 teams are loaded and anybody can win it.

BTW, I have LT in another league and I plan to run him into the ground. Different team, different approach. That's my 2 cents.
