I'm currently involved in the initial draft for the first dynasty league I've bene involved in. I only have 1 year of any sort of fantasy football experience and this is the first time I'm taking it fairly seriously. The league is non-IDP, PPR and otherwise standard scoring – starting 1 QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1RB/WR/TE flex, 1PK and 1DEF. The initial draft is a 23 round veteran draft followed by a 7 round rookie draft, with both drafts being serpentine and first pick in vet getting last in rookie and vice versa. The draft is currently in the 5th round and so far the 12 teams look like this:
| Franchise 1 |
Franchise 2 |
Franchise 3 |
Franchise 4 |
Franchise 5 |
Franchise 6 |
| Peterson, A |
Jones-Drew, M |
Forte, M |
Turner, M |
Jackson, S |
Gore, F |
| Rivers, P |
Brady, T |
Portis, C |
Boldin, A |
Brown, R |
Barber, M |
| White, R |
Colston, M |
Jacobs, B |
Manning, P |
Moss, R |
Bush, R |
| Bryant, A |
Williams, R |
Cutler, J |
Houshmandzadeh, T |
Romo, T |
Holmes, S |
| McClain, L |
Stewart, J |
Jackson, D |
Grant, R |
Royal, E |
Witten, J |
| Franchise 7 |
Franchise 8 |
Franchise 9 |
Franchise 10 |
Franchise 11 |
Franchise 12 |
| Fitzgerald, L |
Williams, D |
Westbrook, B |
Johnson, Ch |
Tomlinson, L |
Johnson, A |
| Bowe, D |
Lynch, M |
Jennings, G |
Johnson, Ca |
Brees, D |
Slaton, S |
| Ryan, M |
Smith, K |
Rodgers, A |
Smith, S |
McFadden, D |
Welker, W |
| Edwards, B |
Jackson, V |
White, L |
Thomas, P |
Marshall, B |
Wayne, R |
| Addai, J |
Gonzalez, A |
Breaston, S |

I was wondering if there were any teams that seemed to have drafted well and others that are worse. There were a few trades so not all rounds were straight serpentine but there aren't any big differences in draft order still to come.
I'm franchise 10 and am next to draft and am a little unsure of where to go with my next pick. I'm thinking I should try to get an established qb soon but the next few I rate very similar to each other so can probably wait a bit and was thinking of trying to trade down to get a 2nd first round pick in the rookie draft (preferably top half). What advice could you give in terms of where I should be looking with my next couple of picks?

For me, I was going to say I liked team 10 the best, which happens to be your team. Getting CJ3 and Calvin in a startup dynasty is awesome. Franchise 9 and 11 overpaid for older RB's whose dynasty values are way lower. Franchise 7 looks decent in a startup ppr as does franchise 12.
Some other teams seemed to not focus on balance. In a ppr dynasty startup, you HAVE to (in my opinion) go either RB/WR/RB, WR/WR/RB, or some combination. Going RB/RB/RB is brutal in a startup dynasty this year.
Seems like the QB's went off the board a bit too early too. If I were you I'd hold off on one. Guys like Palmer/Rothy/McNabb are too high in the 5th, so I'd look to get another solid WR or even going with Gates to fill in your TE postion.
I love your strategy so far. Also, having the #3 pikc in the rookie draft allows you to grab Moreno/Wells/Crabtree or trade the pick for value. Team looks great, I love going RB/WR/WR/RB this year

Welcome to the forums Paddy!
Solid drafting so far. You can wait for the turn and grab a QB in the 6th or go WR/TE with your next two. If you wait for the 6/7 turn it might be hard to grab a quality QB2 and you are getting close to needing to go to a QBBC.
I don't see any team trading a first rounder for a 5th or 6th, but you never know. I'd make your picks, anything outside a top 3/4 pick and you could be waiting on the rookie.

Thanks for the comments. I don't think I'm going to be trading this pick now and so am probably looking at taking a WR or Gates and a QB with my next. The wide receivers I think are the best value here worry me a little though, TO and Ocho, with a couple of younger possibilities who might be a bit of a reach, Donnie Avery being the main one. Because of this I'm starting to lean more towards Gates or possibly taking Big Ben with this pick and one of those WR or Gates if he's still up with the next pick.
