Here is our Players On The Rise/Decline Article for Week 16… we talk about the future value of Pierre Thomas and we send readers to this thread to battle it all out!
Question: Where do you guys rank this guy for 2009 and beyond? And why?

He reminds me too much of Ryan Grant to feel comfortable with him in 2009. An undrafted RB who came in fresh midway through the season (when defenses are injured and worn out) and had some good games for a team that had a prolific passing offense that prevented defenses from stacking the line. I don't think he's at all a lock to deliver next season.

I can't doubt the guy anymore. It doesn't matter where he was drafted (or not at all for that matter), it matters with production on the field. And he is producing. The kid works hard and is making his opportunity count. Let's not forget they cut Antonio Pittman for him because they like Thomas's game a few years ago. Bush gets all the hype, but Thomas is getting the production…he catches the ball almost as well as Bush. If you read some of the Saints publications, the team and coaching staff have total faith in this guy.
I can see something like when Duece and Reggie played together for the future. Pierre could be an annual 1300+ total yard/10+ total TD RB for the next few years. This makes him a solid #2 RB that was probably grabbed of waivers in most leagues.
I can't compare him to Grant, becasuse he held out and was hurt durning the beginning of the season. I don't think Pierre is a fluke…he the real deal!

Smitty, do you think Thomas has the upside in 09 Turner did coming into 08 ? I'm liking what I see so far from him. Duece will be gone and with the health issues that Bush always seems to have the sky is the limit IMO…

This is my opinion as well. P.Thomas compared to M.Turner. There is a stud RB here, and I do think it hurts Bush in PPR. Now, I'm not saying his upside is as good as Turner because there is a lot less sharing involved in the ATL run game, but the guy looks to have the style and power that M.Turner brings to the field. I like him for a top 20 RB simply because he will loose touches to limit him to what I would guess to be an average of 11-15 per game. I would like to know if Smitty thinks this guy is as hyped as Turner was earlier this year. Right now, my opinion is that he is a low end 2nd round pick in redraft.

I wouldn't quite put him in the Turner class…There is just something about him that I am not 100% sold on…but I am getting "more sold" every week.
It was disappointing early in the year when he couldn't hammer down the job, but maybe that was a huge learning experience and he is ready to take off now.
2nd round for me would be a little high. I'd probably consider him 3rd or 4th round, but it would depend on so many factors that's just a guess at this point

I think we will all be sold when he runs all over DET next week!
But I still don't put him in the Turner class yet as Bush still gets carries and catches, but 11 TDs in only a handful of starts is very impressive!

No. Turner was one in a thousand. I like Thomas, but Turner went from rags to a top 3RB.
Thomas could be a top 12RB, sure, but not top 3-5. I like him a lot as a flex option next year. He certainly has the upside for more, though, but I'll let someone else take the risk if they see him as RB2 worthy.

I'm going to label him a RB3 until he proves more. I also labeled Turner a rb3 before this season….
I wouldn't take him in the first 4 rounds. After that I would think about it

Where would you rank him compared to the likes of Jacobs, Stewart, Kevin Smith, Slaton? Who is the better fanatsy back for 09?

1. Jacobs (if he resigns…lead back on a great running team that can score…of course health is an issue)
2. Slaton (so versatile)
3. Thomas (RBBC, but he is the #1 option for scoring)
4. Stewart (D'Angelo is not going anywhere, but still gets his chances on a great running team.)
5. Smith (All down back, but QB and OL suck!)

I like Thomas a ton. I have him in every one of my money dynasty leagues.
I couldn’t leave Thomas below a RB2 ranking or outside the top 24 RB's in a dynasty ranking going into next year as long as the Saints offense stays virtually the same. I’ll take the percieved risk gladly.

I've been a doubter for a while now. I watched him as an Illinois student and didn't see any type of superstar written on him. That said, he sure made me eat my words. He's produced, and I actually think he's been a top 3-4 back in alot of formats over the last 4 weeks. I think he still has a lot of proving to do, but as of right now I'd probably rank him as a low RB #2. Considering where he was ranked coming into the season, he's taken alot of people by suprise.
Ooops of the thread goes to me passing up a trade that would've brought Pierre Thomas and 2 third round dynasty rookie picks to me for Dallas Clark and some garbage. Of course, that was way before he started producing and Duece was making an impact, but still, it hurts so bad right now!!

I think Thomas is a legit player. I've been on the bandwagon since his 100/100 game in week 17 against the bears last year. That being said, I think he's a rb2 level guy. Next year, I probably wouldn't grab him until the 3rd rd. I'd rather have a solid rb and wr or qb first. In a dynasty, I don't know what his value is in terms of selling high. I've been offered anywhere from a low 1st rd rookie pick to a high 2nd rd rookie pick for him. I think he's a guy that you keep, if you have him, and don't trade for him, if you don't.

Being a long time Thomas owner (he was on my practice squad since he signed with the Saints) I am really excited about what he can do next year.
But with that being said and his value getting sky high (probably higher next week!) now might be the time for me to sell and try and package him in a deal to a player like Lynch.
What do you think it would take? Maybe Thomas and LJ for Lynch? I also own the #1 overall rookie pick, but I'm not sure I want to trade Thomas and the pick for Lynch.

I believe he is going to be a good rb2. That being said, I also think people are going to overvalue him. they are either going to take him too early in drafts or want too much for him in trades.

I agree 100% on this. Especially after the two games he just had and another easy one against DET. I like him, but not at the cost he is today

And most damning of all: playing in the exact same offense, Thomas has averaged a tidy 4.8 yards per carry and 9.2 yards per reception while Bush has managed a Cedric Benson-like 3.7 yards per carry and 7.5 yards per reception. The well-rounded Thomas has been considerably more effective as an NFL player.
Took this little tidbit from an article on another site thought it was interesting and that I would share. the article was about Thomas being a better player than Bush.
