Ten of us here at Fantasy Football Xtreme decided to roll through a quick 2009 Early Expert Mock Draft with expert commentary. This is a 10-team league, standard scoring (non-PPR) and the assumed line-up requirements are: 1QB, 2RBs, 3WRs, 1TE, 1K and 1Def. Because this mock was only five rounds in length, we obviously will not roll though enough rounds to create full teams/line-ups, but we will draft as if this draft would have continued. Enjoy and feel free to leave comments below! The official FFX forum thread for this mock draft can be found here.
2009 Fantasy Football Mock Draft – With Commentary
Round One
1.01 – Tavaner – Adrian Peterson, RB, MIN. There is no other RB I’d rather have.
1.02 – X – Clinton Portis, RB, WAS. No flashy player here, just consistent production week in and week out for your fantasy team. He’s exactly what you want out of your first round pick.
1.03 – Ballgame – Frank Gore, RB, SF. Westy may have even more injury problems next year.
1.04 – Zach – Brian Westbrook, RB, PHI. Injuries concern me a little, but he is a top 2-3 overall player per start for at least two more years.
1.05 – Matt – LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, SD. My first thought is Turner, but I just can’t pass up LT2 at No. 5. San Diego is having a down year, and because I still think he has a shot at being the No. 1 overall player next year, I can’t pass him up at No. 5.
1.06 – Smitty – Michael Turner, RB, ATL. Believe it or not, I have a tough time passing up on Joseph Addai and Steven Jackson right here, but everyone knows that Turner is my boy. I expect nothing less than a 1,200+ season and 10-14TDs in 2009.
1.07 – Yarco – Joseph Addai, RB, IND. Wow. Really? Next year will clearly be the year you want a later first-round pick, because you can land a top 3 talent like Addai!
1.08 – Craphonso – Marion Barber, RB, DAL. He continues to be doubted. I’ll gladly take the Barbarian here.
1.09 – John A. – Brandon Jacobs, RB NYG. I was hoping Barber would fall here….SJax is tempting…but the first round to me is about minimizing risk, so will go with the man beast here, he absolutely destroyed a ridiculously tough run D schedule this year, will probably have an easier go next season, is the clear #1 and young by football standards after only one full season and a half as the #1 back…
1.10 – Jimmy – Steven Jackson, RB, STL. I sure hope S-Jax falls this far come 2009, but I doubt it. Jackson will probably be back to a 5-8 type pick next year and even that will be good value.

John A made this observation right away, and it is the first thing I talk about in my observations at the end of the draft… why is Tim Hightower so overlooked?
I do have my concerns about getting the yardage, but still, it was shocking.
Other observations?

He did go late – at 5.09.
If you think about next year and having another year of wear on the tires it's not hard to imagine he'll slip in the rankings here. Still, I figure he'll go way higher than he should in a lot of drafts next year based simply on what he did this year. I'm not so sure he'll ever get near these numbers again, especially if Favre retires (again).

Yeah, I expect him to not have as good of a year next year…BUT..the jets do play in a relatively weak divsion and conference, and their O line is excellent and isn't going anywhere soon, those guys are all wrapped up long term…as an RB2, in the 5th round, even in a 10 teamer, he was a no brainer there…

I'm telling everyone now, Peyton Manning will win leagues next year. When Tom Brady busted out and won championship after championship for fantasy owners all around, it was because he blew up from a 4th+ draft position. Manning will fall and he will more than earn his draft slot in 2009. You will read this a lot by me this coming off-season (warning) :)
More observations? Things will change quick, we will be doing another one soon enough.

I don't think Peyton will fall that low, and some of the round 1 picks like Turner will drop. I would expect P.Manning to fall where B.Jacobs & S.Jackson fell.

Smitty,
I hope you're right about Holmes and Edwards. I drafted both of those guys in two leagues this year and they both killed me. I'm in the playoffs, thank goodness, in both leagues and have Edwards benched this week, but I hope Holmes goes nuts, I'm going to need it.

I could see potential big busts in the first round due to injuries. B.Westbrook is a given, we already are seeing even more signs of breakdown, sooner or later it's gonna be season ending. C.Portis probably the biggest bust has the potential to make or break a draft next year. More injury prone RB's taken in the first round S.Jackson & B.Jacobs. I would risk a first round pick on A.Peterson,M.Barber,M.Lynch,F.Gore & J.Addai,C.Johnson & M.Forte. Right now I think the NFC East RB's will be taken a bit too high. Most of these NFC East RB's will be taken early leaving excellant RB#2 options for the 2nd round and limiting insurance for those drafting early in 2009.

I see Gore as a guy who may have peaked, he took an awful pounding last year and this year, the shelf life of most backs in the nfl is very short, and he seems a step slow already…he doesn't seem to have that burst or breakaway ability he once had…i disagree about jacobs, the way the giants use Ward and Bradshaw to spell him should keep him fresh, he'll miss a game or two each year cause he's so big and guys go for his legs, but overall, it seems like he does most of the punishing out there…and he is lock for double digit TDs evey year, which turns even a mediocre season into fantasy gold…
the jones drew pick is the mopst intriguing, we all marvel at what the kid could do if he had 20-25 carries a game, but del rio seems determined not to do that…i can see a scenario where Taylor moves on, but the jags confound us again by drafting a back early…i'd also watch out next year for chris wells out of ohio state…if he lands in the right spot, he could be a great sleeper pick at RB…guys who drafted rookie backs this year did pretty well as a general rule…

I'm hoping your right on about Manning. Traded for him 2 weeks ago and I lost out on the play-offs due to his 5 pt performance this week. But I'm really excited about having him for next year and beyond. Was also surprising no-one jumped on a rookie RB in round 5…… which I'm sure will change at a later mock draft.
Thanks for doing this guys, very informative and remember 2009 is never too early…

Hey, why wasn't I invited to this draft dabnabit!
Okay.
Round 1 -
Tav…picked Adrian Peterson. I admit that I was wrong. Thought for sure he would get injured, but the Vikes did with AD just as NYG did with the Train. Yes, I was wrong. The next 4 picks are misguided, in my opinion. Portis is going to wear down, Zorn broke him off this year and doesn't spread the ball out enough. Westy is Westy, but I'm not convinced he isn't on the decline. LT2…still way too damn early. Turner, MBIII, Train and SJax = great picks. Addai is exactly what I said he would be. An average talent who truly hit his "luck" in 2007. I wonder if he'll ever rush for 1100 yards or total 1400.
Round 2 -
I like the Johnson and Moss picks, and Forte at 2.10, christ almighty. talk about value. Fitz at 2.09 is…odd. How in the hell did he fall that far?
Round 3 -
Tav obviously has my cheatsheet. I said prior to this season that Brees would be the man and that he is disrespected and underrated. Tav is borderline unbeatable now. the WR pol selected in this round is outstanding. Can't argue with any of the picks
Round 4 -
quite the opposite of the last round. I will never understand the obsession with Steve Smith. Yo, it ain't 2005 no' mo'! Willie Parker….yeah. Braylon Edwards…somebody get this guy a QB and some stickum! Larry Johnson….*cackle*. Some people just can't let go. Roddy White at 4.03 – awesome! Surprised DAW fell so far as well, although JSTew is a required handcuff. and Steve Slaton…wow. How the hell does a top 10 RB fall into 4.09?
Round 5 -
Thomas Jones at 5.09. The dude is a frickin' brick wall, and he is in far better shape than 99% of the players in the NFL. This maybe the steal of the draft. well done John A. I think Lance Moore might be a stretch. Lee Evans and Ryan Grant could end up being genius or madness. Darren McFadden plays for Oakland. Unless it's IDP or Zach Miller, I avoid Oakland. The place is a shithole.
So….
1) Where is Wes Welker? Until Ryan Clark introduced him to Steelers football, he seemed to be a lock for a 2nd consecutive 1000-yard season WITHOUT Tom Brady. He's still 2nd in the NFL in receptions behind only Andre Johnson.
2) Where's Steve Breaston? When Boldin moves on, who is going to take WR2 for Arizona?
3) Where's Kurt Warner? He saved my ass in so many leagues this year. When Brees or Cutler didn't fall to me, Warner was sitting in my lap almost everytime.

Only one TE taken in 5 rounds, and that was Witten in the 5th. I wonder how many teams will punt the TE position due to so many WR/RB options.

Thanks for firing up an early 2009 Mock Draft…got a few comments (all based on PPR)
Addai is currently RB#35 in my league…… Addai = a top3 talent?? I don't think so. Maybe he has a bounceback year next year but I don't spend a 1st round pick on the guy.
Forte went too late…he gets the carries, catches the balls, has not had a bad game (he's #1 ranked RB in PPR and he stayed healthy all year)….Steve Smith is #7WR in my PPR league despite missing 2 games with suspension….so a 4th round pick is hardly a reach….
I love Reggie Bush in PPR when healthy but you gotta handcuff with Pierre Thomas….another 10 or 12 game season out of Reggie and Pierre may be the better pick.
Wes Welker with Brady back = money.
I gotta hate big time on Santonio Holmes….why talk him up so much (AGAIN)? He was talked up like crazy going into this year and based on the hype going into this season he has to be considered a mega-bust. He's another Bernard Berrian or Lee Evans type player who break some big plays every now and then….but that is not a future stud. Don't be fooled by yards/catch. Santonio = never again!!!!
I could be wrong though….good luck!! Peace.
