We will post part one, rounds 1-2, tomorrow… just thought I'd give you guys a heads up. It's not a rookie mock, it's a 2008 fantasy football mock. I'll post the link here when it's posted!

It will actually just be four rounds now, but with commentary for each selection, plus a list of “just missed the cut” types.

Good stuff Smitty… Am eager to see where Marion Barber was taken. BTW, how many RBs and WRs needed to start?

I’m guessing, but I believe this is a value ranking.
This draft is based off of a redraft league, standard scoring system, no PPR.

In a redraft I’d be looking hard at J Lew. He’s running behind a great OLine in an explosive offense and has no competition for carries.

Besides the blatent Pittsburgh favoritism it looks rock solid. I’d personally thank anyone taking Mendy or Big Ben in the 3rd for removing themselves from the playoffs.
Football is a simple sport. It’s all about the line. N.E., Green Bay, NYG, Indy, San Diego. What do they all have in common? They are your playoff teams and they have great OLines that allow their offense to go. Pittsburgh had a middle of the pack line last year and then lost their best lineman (and probowler) this offseason. They are going to take a serious step backwards this year when you add the fact they play the toughest schedule in the NFL.
Sorry for the mini rant, but all this crazy rankings of Steelers players is getting to me. I’m real hopeful of the Jacobs selection as I just got him mid 5th round in a startup dynasty. PLEASE stay healthy Mr. Jacobs!

Wasn’t sure what to expect after reading Gambler’s opening sentences. His 2nd paragraph is an echo of my own sentiments however and one of the real enigma’s facing fantasy owners this year, more in dynasty than re-draft.
In a redraft seeing Roethlisberger @ 3.12 isn’t upsetting to me, not if I’m projecting how he’ll perform this year. Early on, his ADP is near the end of the 5th round. By the end of August, imo, it’ll be up a round and while the Pit OL is a mess here is one view:
Tomlinson had this to say about their draft:
“There are two schools of thought to protect a quarterback … You can get linemen or you can get him weapons – people that people have to account for. Obviously with this pick, we’ve gotten a weapon. So what he is able to do on a football field will help our quarterback and our football team.”
Think NE last year. Brady didn’t just start picking himself up during the SB, he’d done it all year…usually at the end of a big play. While I’m not predicting 50 td’s for Big Ben, I can see him getting into the 38 td range and moving into the Carson Palmer ADP range…just about where he showed up in the mock.
As for Mendenhall in the 3rd, in a re-draft…I’ll be saying thank you as well.

Middle of the pack? only if you judge by sacks. That is certainly one way to judge, but not the only way. After all some of those sacks are caused by the qb waiting for the big play (and not having a tall 'bail me out' type wr).
Try these numbers on for size:
Rushing offense rankings in 2007
Pit #3
NYG #4
SD #7
NE #13
IND #18
GB #21
Point is the line can run block. Oh and despite all of those sacks the Steelers threw for 34 Tds, more than anyone but NE and Dallas . . . .
Yea the sched seems tough now, but that is all based on LAST YEAR, we all know that NFL stands for Not For Long, things change and some of those 'tough' games may end up easier then you think (and vice versa)

Absolutely true…happens each and every year.
If any of you stat warriors have the time or inclination, that would be worth the time to discover. Just how accurate are these SoS projections over the years against the actual rushing/passing numbers in games?

As for the reaches, keep in mind the paragraph that is in red at the beginning of the mock… our sleepers are going fast, which means come August, if their ADPs are a lot lower, observe and adjust. Roethy will prob be able to be grabbed lower, no question. Mendy too (maybe). I think as we near August, things will change and change more in the direction of Roethy going early, Turner going at least by the top of the third and Mendy going by the top of the third.

*ahem*
there’s a reason that I put very little stock in year-to-year showings of the defenses. It’s ‘nice’ to know that LT THIS YEAR will run against teams that gave up a lot of rushing yards LAST YEAR.
However, consider the following:
1) Rushing yards per game has as much to do with how your offense plays as how your defense plays. If you are down by 14-21 points in the 3rd half on a frequent basis, I bet your passing defense won’t look so bad simply because other teams are going to run the ball throughout the 2nd half to preserve the lead
2) Teams move people around, they draft to fill holes, they make trades and FA acquisitions. As a result, the line you saw last year may not be the line you see this year
3) The Steelers biggest problem BY FAR on their offensive line last year was Sean Mahan, a failed experiment at center. As a result of Mahan (and several injuries) their much-maligned line had a pretty difficult time, yet somehow managed to produce the NFL’s leading rusher (until FWP broke his leg) and the guy who had more TD passes than Peyton Manning and Brett Favre.
As for Mendy, keep something in mind. AD was a 2nd stringer behind Chester Taylor last season as well as MBIII being the ‘2nd stringer’ for Dallas for the last 2 years.

Welker seems at least a round too high. What happened to Holmes? In a redraft I can't imagine taking Welker over a guy like Torry Holt.
Other than that I have no major qualms. I'd have Maroney higher but I understand why he isn't. Maybe the WR's could go higher, I like Earnest Graham more than most, but I can't imagine taking him over a guy like Reggie Wayne.

Yea, Welker seems high, but the numbers are there and probably will be once again in 2008. I'm with you though, I struggled placing him that high (even though he could earn the spot), but it was a group effort “tug of war” type of placement.
