News: At the NFL Rookie Symposium in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., 49ers rookie RBGlen Coffee told CBSSports.com in an exclusive interview that he will get carries this season along with veteran Frank Gore. Coffee said his running style differs from Gore, which will give him the opportunity to take away some touches. "They want to run the ball first," Coffee said. "That's the approach they want to have. Frank is a great running back that I can learn from. He's so smooth when he runs, and when I run I try to make the ground tremble. To be able to incorporate his running style into mine, I love learning from him. Whatever role I fall into, I determine that. However good I do determines my role on the field. Right now I'm just trying to soak up everything and go out there and try to do what I have to do to help the team win."

I finally landed Gore in a draft at 2.6 after scooping MJD at 1.5 in a 10 team league

After reading this, should we be considering Coffee as an low cost insurance policy?

BENCH (RBs): Knowshon Moreno, Ray Rice, Shonn Greene, Bernard Scott

BENCH (WRs): A . Gonzalez, J. Cotchery, D. Avery

I figure once Hard Knocks airs in August, Bernard Scott won't be so much of a secret.

FYI draft went as follows:

(1.1 landed AP and 2.10 Steve Slaton. First time i have seen that!)

ROUND 1

1 Adrian Peterson

2 Matt Forte

3 Michael Turner

4 Chris Johnson

5 Maurice Jones-Drew

6 Larry Fitzgerald

7 Steven Jackson

8 LaDainian Tomlinson

9 Drew Brees

10 Andre Johnson

ROUND 2

11 Brandon Jacobs

12 Marion Barber

13 Randy Moss

14 DeAngelo Williams

15 Tom Brady

16 Frank Gore

17 Peyton Manning

18 Calvin Johnson

19 Clinton Portis

20 Steve Slaton

I don't see him as needed at all.  If you have room for him then great…but don't worry if you don't.  Gore is ging t oget record carries this year.  Coffee is a rook who will be lucky to see a few carries.

I agree.  Coffee is not a "must have" handcuff by any means, so don't go out of your way to roster him.

Thanks Gambler and X .  New question. What do you think about grabbing Rashad Jennings to insure MJD if i can make bench space?

I hope you guys are right.  I went and picked up Gore in as many leagues as I could….4 dynasty/keeper leagues and have been drafting him when I can as well.

When it comes to handcuffs, you have to have some confidence that you would actually use them if your primary RB went down.  In most cases, when a primary RB is injured, the coaches take a committe approach to fill the void and they all end up useless fantasy players.  Established backups (like Michael Turner a few years ago) are the exception to the rule and are worth rostering as insurance.  In this case I wouldn't bother with Jennings unless you truly have the room to roster him and there are no better options.

Yeah, if u got room why wouldn't u. I guess know body else believes in rookie rb's in your league. U have most of them.

Would someone please tell Calvin Johnson and Greg Jennings it's time to play ball? Thx

Depends on who else you have at RB and if that HC would actually play for you. To me the only must own handcuff is Chester Taylor caause he comes in and produces like a #1 RB. Like the others said if you have room sure but if that HC prob wont start for you anyway and you dont have garbage you can drop then no need.

Brown and McCoy went as well as the WRs.

I think it more has to do with the time..  No training camps yet and no preseason. I'd imagine it be much harder to get that crop in late August.

Let me also clarify that I didnt intend on drafting Coffee as a handcuff, but that statement and knowing they are run -the-ball-first team now with Singletary as coach i wanted to get a second opinion.  My Bench RBS of Rice, Moreno, Scott, Greene have way more upside.

Shonn Greene is definitely a sleeper for redraft so not as many people will take the flier. I'm holding him because a Thomas Jones trade is a real possibility in July. There's no better boom or bust pick than Bernard Scott right now.

The team i would really like to figure out is the Raiders. Michael Bush is intriguing and so is Chaz, but Jermarcus is looking like a bust at QB and Garcia can throw the ball deep.  I do believe D-MC is ready to make a statement.

After that the Browns are another identical mess.  Is Jerome Harrison possibly the better pick than James Davis?

I certainly think there are a couple of other must own handcuffs such as…Ladell Betts, McCoy, Jerius Norwood, Fred Jackson, and Jamaal Charles just to name a few…even guys like Brandon Jackson and Mendenhall would all put up great numbers if thrust into a starting job in my opinion.  I plan to roster as many of these fellows as I can especially at the end of drafts knowing full well that the odds of Portis, Westbrook, Lynch, LJ, Grant, and Willie Parker all playing 16 games is about as good as me winning the lottery.

QB-Schaub, Palmer RB-Barber, Portis, K. Smith, Mendenhall, Greene WR-Jennings, Ocho, Manningham, Holt, Burleson, A. Gonzalez TE-Daniels

Coffee is not a must handcuff… Jennings is a better hancuff to MJD though, word is Jennings has looked great in OTA's and minicamps.  Of course if you have the room why not for snab Coffee.

Yeah if you have room but I wouldnt pass on or drop a starter to add a HC. Hopefully you have better options to play at RB then a backup coming in for injury. Most of the guys you mentioned with the exception of Betts we have no clue how they would play if they were the starter like we do with Chester Taylor. Mendy, Jacksons, Norwood, McCoy and Charles could all suck as starting RB's for all we know.

I posted this back in July, Wanted to see if after Coffee's pre-season, what the urgency of owning Coffee is now for Frank Gore owners

Beat reporter Matt Maiocco projects the 49ers to use a 17:6 carry ratio between Frank Gore and Glen Coffee this season.

Coffee's still just a "handcuff" fantasy pick, but has earned an early-season role with an outstanding preseason. Over 16 weeks, the 17-carry per game estimate would result in 272 for Gore, or more than he's had since 2006. It should keep him fresh, and Gore will remain oft-used in the passing game.

Im not sure if the urgency is greater because there is no bigger threat of a Gore injury now then there was. However Coffee has shown talent and prob should be rostered in all dynasty leagues and even better if you have Gore. Coffee is not the only backup that has been productive for the 49ers this preseason and this could be a result of improved O-line play also.
