Saw the player spotlight on Matt Leinart. I thought the same thing about him last year and then he underperformed. Then the dreaded timeshare with Warner. Luckily for fantasy owners, Warner was able to become the full time starter and had pretty darn good numbers (especially considering he wears gloves, lol).
Looks like Leinart has the starter job at the moment. My question is, if he doesnt perform again this season, will AZ go to Warner full time, or the dreaded timeshare making neither of them good fantasy options?
If I felt like they wouldnt go to the timeshare, I would be willing to take a chance on Leinart and stash Warner on my bench just in case (since he proved to be solid last year).

I have absolutely no read on that situation and the “IF’s” are endless, nor am I a fan of Leinart. Oversimplifying it a bit…it’s Leinart’s job to lose…lose the job, pack your bags (Hollywood is calling) as they’ll be drafting a QB in 2009 so the HC can go with “his” guy, not Dennis Green’s. In the meantime, Warner waits in the wings for what he (and I) expect to be the inevitable meltdown. Wait too long to replace him and you could lose the team…replace him to early and lose most of his trade value even though someone will give him a shot.
Clearly, I have a different view of Leinart.

I'm not a big fan of Leinart either. He is in a nice situation and it is his job to lose like Tav said, but I don't know if he is really committed to be the best he can be. The off field distractions seem to really be a focus issue. He seems more interested in being popular outside of football then letting his play do the talking for him. I think eventually they look elsewhere. Warner isn't going to be the guy to take over permanetly. Just a temp solution while he can still play. I think they do start looking at free agent QB or draft a QB in '09 offseason. This year even if he is the starter they will bring in Warner for some plays which is crazy to even consider and shows their faith in him. I mean a split QB situation is the pits.

Guess I should weigh in on the spotlight I wrote.
So, there is no way I believe Warner is the answer for the Cards - He's 37, and let's be honest, he's not the short or long term answer for the Cardinals. If the staff is smart, they'll resign Warner to be the backup and that's about it.
Leinart has talent and he's throwing to the best WR tandem in the NFL. He didn't all of a sudden become unable to play the position just because he has fallen off of most people's radar. I fully realize “talent” does not always translate to the NFL, but he hasn't even played a full season of games yet - and most of last year's 5 games were partial. The guy needs to be given a fair shake and allowed to make the mistakes rooks make without having to worry about being yanked in the middle of a game. That's not how you groom a future QB. If it doesn't work out - fine - but if they are going to invest a high pick and all those $$$, then they owe it to themselves to find out one way or another whether this guy can play… I think he can.
I may be overly optimistic but, as I said in the spotlight, take a look at the QBs after the top 6-7 are off the board and not a one comes without questions. Doesn't necessarily mean he turns into Peyton Manning, but his upside is incredible if he finally lives up to his potential. Considering he can be had for a song right now, what's to lose? His cost is extremely low in comparison to his upside and that's what you are looking for when drafting in the later rounds.

if leinart was playing for the chiefs he wouldnt even be mentioned as a draftable back up qb…bottom line i personally dont like leinart and dont think he has what it takes to be a good nfl qb…ive been wrong before….although far and between….leinart…young…blah blah blah…what makes the leinart case valid is his situation….that being said if they want to win this season warner is the man…
