Below are six popular fantasy football questions and each question is answered by three fantasy football experts. We have also attached an “Ask Our Staff” question — If you have a question for our staff, use our Ask our Staff feature!
Who is your biggest breakout candidate in 2009 (excluding studs)? Smitty says:
One of my favorite breakout candidates in 2009 has to be Ray Rice. His ADP is rising higher and higher every day, but currently it sits around the 7th- to 9th-round range. Considering he has fantasy RB2 upside, that’s insane value right there. I honestly think that Rice can produce top 12-14RB numbers this upcoming season — If he can throw down that kind of production, there will be no bigger steal in 2009 when all is said and done. Is there a chance Rice won’t start, or that will share carries all season long? Sure, his resume isn’t a big one, and he has only carried the ball over 11 times just twice, but that’s why he is a breakout candidate and not a “lock” to produce. Even if his ADP climbs into the 4th- to 5th-round range as we head toward August, he is still a monster steal given how much he can outperform even a 4th- or 5th-round pick. Dynasty leaguers, trade for the guy now before it’s too late!
Tavaner says:
Pierre Thomas – Preparation met opportunity last year and Pierre proved more than up to the task. In his final six games, as he got double digit rushing attempts, he ran for 475 yards, with 202 receiving yards on 19 receptions (26 targets), with 9 total td’s (3 receiving). Drew Brees has already called him “the total package”. The last guy he talked up was a 7th rounder…some guy named Colston!
X says:
I can’t decide between these two guys, so I’ll mention them both. Pierre Thomas was a guy I was a little skeptical about earlier in the year, but with the draft well behind us and no free agent movement at RB for the Saints, I am now all-aboard the P-Train! Similar to Michael Turner last year, this guy will be coming from the 4-6 round range to be a top 10 player this season, and the Saints need him if they are going to have a more well-rounded attack. The other guy I have really started liking the last few weeks is Ray Rice – he is another coming from a similar draft range who could easily be a top 10-15 player. I am convinced that Willis McGahee is not a player coach John Harbaugh believes in, so unless Rice gets hurt, he is the starter. Bottom line for me is either of these guys are tremendous value late if you want to go WR early in your drafts.
Who is your biggest early-round breakout candidate? Smitty says:
Frank Gore is my choice for early-round breakout candidate. He is extremely underrated right now in all formats, especially in dynasty leagues. The 49ers runner is only 26, yet dynasty league owners are selling him off as if he is entering his final elite season. Take advantage of all the doubt and grab Gore in all dynasty leagues if the price is right. I personally have Gore inside my top five overall in all leagues and formats this upcoming season — I consider him as an equal to runners like Chris Johnson and even Matt Forte. I’d only rank Adrian Peterson, Steven Jackson and Michael Turner ahead of Gore entering 2009. Crazy? I’ve been called worse! Look, new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye has made it clear that he thinks that Gore has the ability to carry the football 25 times per game, and the team’s transition back into a run-first offense could help Gore get back to his monster-like 2006 form. Gore, again just 26, had a rough 2008 according to most, but 1,036 yards rushing (4.3), 43 receptions for 373 yards and eight total touchdowns was actually quietly-solid in my opinion. Since being a starter back in 2006, Gore has averaged over 1,700 yards per season and has missed just three games. If healthy in 2009, expect Gore to crank out roughly 280-300 carries for over 1,300 rushing yards (4.6), 40-50 receptions for roughly 400 receiving yards and 12-14 total touchdowns.
Tavaner says:
Dwayne Bowe – Since his rookie season, he’s produced 156 receptions, 2017 yards and 12 TDs. Compare that with Calvin’s 126 receptions, 2087 yards and 16 TDs and they are far and away the top two WRs of their class. This year, Bowe is going to explode. The newly installed passing offense …. continue reading

This was a good read, I agree alot with most of the buy low candidates, there are guys who will be serious value this year that most should take advantage of.
Wouldn't mind seeing this feature every so often.

I expect some big things out of Greg Jennings. The FFX dynasty rankings have him at #10 but I see him as the 4th best WR in dynasty format. I see him and Rodgers having a very successful year this year. I think Jennings has the tools to be the next elite WR and won't be suprised when he has moved into your top 5 in the rankings. ***BUSTOUT CANIDATE****

hey smitty,
you guys should make a similar spotlight with differing opinions on some of the bigger name players you guys are avoiding this year.
in regards to the above spotlight, i like Megatron a ton. with his size and speed, he is unstoppable as long as he is healthy. i think the qb carousel and an 0-16 lions team proved that last year (so consistent even with that war zone happening around him). and this is his 3rd year which is normally the "breakout wr" year. if he gets some decent throws this year, he could wind up being the #1 wideout at seasons end imo. i am reaching for him this year.
ray rice could be this years matt forte imo. many people still don't believe he will get lead back duties. ESPN actually rated McClain and McGahee above Rice in their detailed rankings. McClain has put on the weight to move back to FB and the staff has even said that is what would happen. McGahee couldn't handle lead duties physically even if it was given to him at this point. and it seems the coaching staff is tired of his personality. Rice may be an absolute steal and possible a monster. We have seen what Cameron can do with a run offense.
and count me in officially on the Shonn Greene bandwagon. after watching all the highlight film the internet had to offer yesterday, i can see why the Jets had him rated as their #1 back in the draft.

Calvin should be huge this year, but most everyone is thinking the same thing on that one… I'm afraid his ADP will get too high and he will have to be a toop 3WR for sure in order for fantasy owners to their invested value back… but we'll see where his ADP levels out to.
As for Ray Rice, I can only beat a dead horse so much. I guess I won't stop, but everyone should be picking up on my off-season theme on this one..
Greene has HUGE upside. I loved Mendy a ton last year and injury took him out. I'm not sure what to make of Mendy right now, although I still have high hopes. Lets hope an injury doesn't do the same to Greene, or any of those rookie RBs!

On the WR side, I really like Roddy White. He finished very strong last year and should continue this year as the schedule is tougher and likely many more close games.
On the RB side, I also like Gore and Ronnie Brown. Especially in PPR leagues.
On the TE side, Owen Daniel in PPR. Houston should breakout this year as a playoff ready type team. Nice schedule will help.

Hi guys, New member long time forum reader and tool user. Nice to be here… at RB, I personally like Kevin Smith more than most, I like the what the Lions did with the O-line by signing Salaam and Jansen. I see the kid going for 1,100 AP yards with 10 TD's. I'll throw the first QB in there, something tells me Matt Ryan will be inside the top 10 QB's in FF at the end of this year.

good to have you on the forums All-Day! I like Smith and Matty-Ice a lot this year too. And I can see Matty getting inside that top 10 this year. He has great work ethic. Teams found last year that they could confuse him with the zone, but I think he works it out this year. Adding Gonzo gives him a ton of talent on the offensive side of the ball. Turner, Norwood, Gonzo, and White could make a lot of QBs look pretty good.

Since we are beating the Rice horse in this thread……I just read this from the Baltimore Sun, in case you haven't seen it:
Willis McGahee says he's not upset about being demoted to Ray Rice's backup.
"I don't mind. Work is work," he said. "That's either with the first, second or third (team)." McGahee also confirmed that he underwent offseason knee surgery after earlier claiming the procedure was to his ankle.
