WR Javon Walker signs six-year deal with Raiders

FFX: According to ESPN.com, the Raiders have inked WR Javon Walker to a six-year deal worth $55 million, $16 million of which is guaranteed. He will get roughly $27 million over the first three years. FANTASY: When healthy, Walker has top 10 ability, but in Oakland he could struggle to reach his potential. Obviously he is healthier than most thought, which is solid news, but it is still tough to predict what kind of numbers he can produce in that offense in 2008. Top 15-20 for fantasy WRs isn’t out of the question if Walker is as healthy as Oakland thinks he is, but it sure is hard to count on those kinds of numbers in that Oakland offense.

In this case the “health” he needed could not be found in Denver. I believe he needed to leave the memories and reminders of Darrent Williams.

Fantasy wise…he went to the one place, at the moment, where he would be the clear #1…which is also what he needs. Top 20 right now but he could also slip closer to 30 depending on Russell.

Right. Top 20 is about right for now, as that really is only 1000 and 6TDs in most leagues. I think he may have a tougher time getting 1000 than 6TDs, though. 900 and 6 or 7 would put him in between 20-25 I would guess, so worst case scenario he is a low-end WR2 in 12 team leagues, possibly a solid WR3… for starters. Could change in either direction.

In our Expert Dynasty League II, do we still trade Santana or Chris Henry (CIN) with Javon Walker… so two of those for Santonio Holmes?

Thoughts?

I am an avid Steelers fan. And I’d still do that any day of the week. I think both Holmes and Ben will be huge this year.

Good trade…give up some depth, get rid of a lot of question marks.

Holmes and Roethy will connect a ton this year. Roethy is going to earn some of that cash. Some is the key word, as you can’t ever really claim you’re working hard enough to deserve 102 million :)

No offense here, but you guys are really gulping down this Javon Walker kool-aid.

The man couldn’t even run last year, no team would trade for him, he had like 5 catches in the last 10 games last year, and now the only team to give him a contract is the most dysfunctional franchise and owner in all of sports.

Yeah, that screams 1000 yards and 6 TDs to me. I wouldn’t trust him to ever finish a year or accumulate good stats again. Oh yeah and he’s also a locker room cancer.

Most all of the top WRs are divas, so they are all problems to some extent. I agree Oakland paid too much, but they only have themselves to blame - all things being equal they have to pay more to entice anyone of value to sign with them. Until they can pull themselves out of the gutter of the NFL, this will continue and their only shot is to overpay for the potential that Walker provides. If you are Oakland, you have to take these chances, especially with a rookie QB at the helm. They certainly couldn’t go into ‘08 with Curry as their #1 guy and virtually no depth. Money aside, I like the move, Walker is only a year removed from being considered one of the top WRs in the game.
