Ask The Experts: Who Do I Start?

Brett Favre (@DET) or Drew Brees (@CAR) ?

ASK THE EXPERTS - A questioned asked by a FFX Forum user.
Smitty
Both are solid QBs right now, but Favre faces a passing defense that ranks in the bottom five in the league and Brees faces a defense that ranks right in the middle of the pack. Favre should put on a Thanksgiving show on Thursday. Start Brett Favre.
Favre’s match-up is quite a bit better than Brees’, but I think the short week will hurt Favre a bit. This is a very close call, but I have a feeling that the Lions will play some tough football on Thursday and this could end up being a lower scoring battle than people expect. Start Drew Brees.

Chester Taylor (@NYG) or Willis McGahee (@SD) ?

ASK THE EXPERTS - A questioned asked by a FFX Forum user.
Smitty
Chester faces the Giants in Week 12 (top 10ish against the run) and McGahee faces the Chargers (lower half of the league against the run), so the match-ups screams McGahee on this one. That said, Chester deserves some major consideration after last week’s performance. While I don’t see Chester having 164 and 3TDs this week, he certainly has a solid shot at 100 and a touch. The thing that concerns me with Minny this week is that the Giants could get off to an early lead, which will limit Chester’s opportunities. As for McGahee, the runner has scored a touchdown in each of his last five games… Even though I’m not the biggest McGahee believer, I’d go with the match-up on this one and hope his TD-streak continues. Start Willis McGahee.
Who are we kidding? Match-up or not, that Minnesota offensive line produces fantasy numbers like no other. I like McGahee’s match-up, and he is playing rather well as of late, but I still say roll with the extremely hot hand. Start Chester Taylor.

Anquan Boldin (vs. SF) or Joey Galloway (vs. WAS) ?

ASK THE EXPERTS - A questioned asked by a FFX Forum user.
Smitty
These defenses are just about dead even, and both rank right around 20th against the pass. To make it even tougher, both games are at home… so both WRs are extremely solid starts in my book. After seeing Boldin break loose for that Week 11 touchdown, I think it is safe to say that his hip injury is improving. And while the injury still seems to be bugging Boldin, and even though Galloway is playing great football right now, I still think I’d roll with Anquan Boldin.
Galloway is playing great, but I see the Cards finally putting up some serious points this week. I think that Washington-Tampa game is going to be a low scoring game, so I go with the player that will be surrounded by more scoring. Start Anquan Boldin.

Reggie Bush (@CAR) or Marion Barber (vs. NYJ) ?

ASK THE EXPERTS - A questioned asked by a FFX Forum user.
Smitty
Barber has a fantastic match-up this week against one of the worst defenses in the entire NFL. He is a great start, no question… I still go with Bush here, as the super-star rusher can do so much damage both catching and rushing the football. Close call, given the match-up for Barber, but I say start Reggie Bush.
Bush is the kind of player that can play at that elite level at any give moment, so this is a bit risky, but I go with Barber. The Jets give up about 150 yards a game on the ground and Barber should see a big chunk of that yardage. Bush has a decent match-up himself against the Panthers, but Barber’s is gold. Start Marion Barber.

To Believe In, Or Not To Believe In?

This year has been like no other fantasy year, as a plethora of stud running backs are doing nothing and receivers like Randy Moss and Terrell Owens are worth more than almost every single rusher in the game to date.

Will this change? What players will continue to play like duds? Should you bench them? What players should you still believe in? Well, below is proof that opinions vary even within the experts (and on the same Site). We have listed a few big names below and three staffers have decided to “Believe” or “Not Believe” in that player (and to what degree) from here on out. Enjoy.

Laurence Maroney

Smitty

It is time to give up on Maroney for the time being. He is capable of bouncing back, no doubt, but the Patriots aren’t using him. It’s too risky to start him, unless you’re extremely thin at RB, and it’s too risky to trade him, as you won’t get near enough for the RB… It’s time to sit him and hope for the best down the stretch.

Tavaner

Sit him for now. N.E. will have to run at some point but last night’s six carry effort illustrates just how dire the circumstances will have to be.

Craphonso

I would love to have Maroney as a 3rd back/flex play and possibly RB2. I do not think you will get enough value if you trade him. I still think the Pats will begin to run the ball a bit more in this second half of the season. I see upside here if you can trade for him on the cheap. I still believe.

Frank Gore

Smitty

If you own Gore, don’t trade him because you won’t get enough. If you don’t own him, go after him if you can get him for 3rd round-type talent. I realize he is struggling, and he is killing those fantasy owners trying to sneak into the playoffs, but he has a lot of upside at the discounted price that he is likely going for right now. Be sure to jump on our Forums to get advice on specific offers/ideas that you may have.

Tavaner

Another hold and hope player. Someone may want him though and Santana Moss has a nice playoff schedule. Yea, things are that bad.

Craphonso

No thanks. The SF offense has shown no signs of turning around. I have little to believe his season will improve and I gave up on him weeks ago.

Peyton Manning

Smitty

I still believe in Peyton, no question about it. Marques Colston and Lee Evans have taught us that studs have that ability to explode back onto the fantasy scene at any given moment, especially when in a solid offense all in all. Having Marvin Harrison out, then Gonzalez, has hurt Manning a bit, but Harrison should be back in Week 13-14… so Peyton easily ranks right up there with Tony Romo if you’re just looking at Weeks 12-16. No one ranks along side of Brady.

Tavaner

Keep him but a QBBC is a real possibility. Injuries have decimated their offensive line and WR corps. Only Jax of their remaining opponents has the ability to control the ball on the ground, which will limit his production in that game. The rest of the year will likely be a mixed bag of results unless the injured players return. Welcome the the reality of being the defending SB champ.

Craphonso

The injuries are hurting the Colts, but it is a great time to get Peyton for a Championship run. I simply cannot rank him lower than #2 QB even with his recent struggles. I most certainly still believe.

Chad Johnson

Smitty

I still believe in Chad, as Housh is commanding some pretty serious defensive respect right now, and Palmer is always capable of producing some pretty insane stats. If you have Chad, I wouldn’t deal him unless you can somehow sell the receiver high. If you don’t own him, test the trade waters and see if you can steal him away from a frustrated owner.

Tavaner

His playoff schedule is worth a spot on your bench. The hits that he has taken are affecting him, regardless of what we are being told. Don’t expect too much from him over the next few weeks.

Craphonso

He is simply not producing at a #1 level. He has not scored since week 2, and he has gone above 100 yards just once in his last seven games. He is a perfect candidate to sell and upgrade your team.

Rudi Johnson

Smitty

I don’t see Rudi getting his job back full-time. Kenny Watson is just far too effective in the passing game and the Bengals are now use to using their RB in the passing game — Rudi getting back even 60% of the carries would shock me, as Watson seems like the more talented rusher at this stage in Rudi’s career. I no longer believe in Rudi, so I recommend trading him while you can, unless you own, or can acquire, Kenny Watson.

Tavaner

Another H&H (hold and hope) player. No trade value…could help come playoffs, or CIN could already have self-destructed.

Craphonso

He split carries with Kenny Watson this week. Watson has outplayed Rudi this season. The Bengals D is hurting both of their values, as the team is being forced to abandon the run lately. However, I still see Rudi’s potential at the goal line. Despite the apparent split in carries, Rudi still should get the carries at the stripe ……cautiously, I still believe.

Marvin Harrison

Smitty

Harrison’s value is about as low as it can get, so trading him isn’t an option if you own him. If you don’t own him, try to catch a frustrated owner sleeping, but just don’t give-up starter-type material. If Harrison comes back, he could very easily return to at least WR2-type talent… but, will he ever return? Well, it won’t be this week, that seems to be the only thing we know for sure.

Tavaner

I’ve already dropped this guy in re-drafts. Don’t think he comes back…maybe ever.

Craphonso

His knee injury is the big question. I would take a gamble on Harrison. He should be available at a discounted price. Despite not knowing when he will return, I still believe he will return.
