According to Michael Silver of Yahoo! sports, Chargers WR Vincent Jackson remains in a stalemate with the team, and the permission given to pursue a trade with other teams has resulted in little interest. Silver also reports the team is supposedly asking for a second round pick in 2011 and a third rounder in 2012 as compensation for Jackson in trade.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It is getting harder and harder to see Jackson playing in 2012, because the Chargers are not allowing all teams to discuss a trade for him, just the ones they see fit. Plus, even if they are willing to fork over those two picks, there is still the issue of signing him long term. There is also this interesting fact: because Jackson was placed on the roster exempt list, if he doesn't sign by September 4th he will need to serve the three game suspension handed down by the NFL, and then have to sit out an additional 3 games of suspension due to being placed on that list. If he signs prior to that, by any team, those suspensions can be served concurrently and he will only miss the first three weeks of the season. It is getting down to the nitty-gritty now, if we are going to see any movement on this, it will happen in the next week.
According to ESPN, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is set to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Friday and is expected to ask for a three game reduction in his suspension. Roethlisberger will be joined by Steelers President Arthur J. Rooney as a show of solidarity. The current suspension stands at six games, but most expect it to be reduced to four games.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Lots of speculation right now, but like everyone else I am expecting a four game suspension and I'd be surprised if it went lower than that in spite of what Big Ben requests. In the meantime, the Steelers will have to figure out who will start at QB while he is out - neither Byron Leftwich or Dennis Dixon have looked very good.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys will hold rookie WR Dez Bryant out of their final preseason game against Miami. Owner Jerry Jones revealed it has more to do with the starters not playing at all in this final game than it does with any concerns with his health.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Bryant has fallen off the fantasy radar in the last few weeks while rehabbing a high ankle sprain. I still think he can have enough of an impact this season to make him worth drafting as a WR3. He may not get off to a quick start, but I think he'll be a big part of this offense by midseason. Keep him in mind come draft day.
According to NFL.com, RB Michael Bush's return remains cloudy after he had surgery on his thumb earlier in the week to repair a "Bennett" fracture. On his own Twitter account, Bush acknowledged as much and called it "nothing major".
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Even though it is his left thumb that is broken, Bush is a southpaw and that is what is likely complicating matters. We'll just have to wait and see on this one, but I suspect he will miss at least one regular season game before he gets back into action. If he does miss time, Darren McFadden will make a decent start while he is out, assuming he can stay healthy himself.
According to the Bills website, RB Fred Jackson will be limited in the early part of the season in order to allow him to fully recover from the hand injury he suffered early in the preseason. Head coach Chan Gailey did suggest Jackson had a "good chance" to play in the season opener, but would likely only see limited action.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Rookie CJ Spiller has been taking more of the reps the last few weeks with Jackson and Lynch hurt, but how the rotation will shake out once Jackson is fully back in the fold remains to be seen. I've said all along that if all three of these guys are healthy, Jackson will see a majority of the carries, with Spiller more of a change of pace back and option in the passing game. Lynch's role is not all that clear, but I don't see him as more than a backup to a healthy Lynch, and there is still a chance he gets traded. As it stands now, the value runner in this trio is Jackson... his stock has dropped to bargain levels.
The Vikings placed WR Sidney Rice on the reserve/PUP list today as part of a roster trimming to get down to the required 75 players.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This move was expected and essentially means Rice is guaranteed to miss the first six weeks of the season at minimum, with the potential for another six weeks of evaluation to see if he can get back onto the field. Realistically, I would expect him to miss roughly 9 weeks, which is 75% of the fantasy season in most leagues. Unless your fantasy team can afford to hold a player who may never start for you, my advice is to leave him for someone else to deal with. Another option is to add him to your team around week 5 if he is available on the wire. That said, dynasty owners are in a different boat and will need to hold Rice on their roster, hoping he can come back in time for a playoff run.
The Redskins have placed WR Malcolm Kelly on injured reserve after he reinjured the hamstring that had kept him from practicing throughout most of training camp. Head coach Mike Shanahan said Kelly was disappointed, but took the news in stride. "I think he’s disappointed. Any time you can’t play, you’re disappointed. I think he understands that he needs to get on the field. He hasn’t been able to do that."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It isn't a surprise when you consider how little Kelly has done to this point in his career and the fact that Shanahan is a stickler for guys needing to practice in order to play. Kelly is very likely done in Washington, and it is unlikely he will be productive for any other team with his history of knee issues. I'd advise dynasty owners to cut ties with Kelly and get a better prospect on their roster.
According to the Tampa Tribune, running back Derrick Ward's sluggish preseason has cost him a spot on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster. In addition to starter Cadillac Williams, the team will look to versatile running back Earnest Graham, second-year pro Kareem Huggins and others to contribute to the running game.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: This isn't much of a surprise. Bump Huggins up in your rankings, he's Caddy's backup now and a low cost handcuff! Earnest Graham is being used as a fullback and while he may get some carries, expect him to assume the blocking role most of the time.
The Giants have placed WR Sinorice Moss on injured reserve, ending his season, after he underwent surgery for a sports hernia that had been troubling him throughout the offseason.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Dynasty owners should go ahead and drop Moss for a better developmental option on their bench. Expect Ramses Barden and Victor Cruz to battle each other for dibs on that WR4 role.
According to Darren Urban, the Cardinals depth chart now lists Derek Anderson as the starting QB ahead of Matt Leinart.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It is becoming apparent that Matt Leinart has fallen out of favor with head coach Ken Whisenhunt. The coach says both will play in Thursday's preseason finale, but I expect Anderson to be the starting QB to open the Cardinals season. At this point, neither is a great option even as a QB2, but Anderson may be worth a shot late to stash in the hopes he can regain some of the glory days he had in Cleveland.
According to the Rams Twitter page, WR Donnie Avery was placed on IR Sunday, ending his 2010 season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Avery was a favorite receiver of mine from last year's class, but this will set him back quite a bit heading into next season. Early reports suggest Danny Amendola will assume the no. 2 receiver role, but there is still a chance a veteran could be signed once final cuts come around.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, RB Darren McFadden's performance against the 49ers was labelled as explosive by Raiders head coach Tom Cable in spite of his less than stellar rushing numbers. "I saw explosive play, I saw a guy run hard and in between the tackles. You know, it's nice to get him back. You know it's good for him to get his first action. I've said all along that when he's healthy, I think he's very important to what we're trying to do."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I'm not sure I would be that excited about a nine carry, seven yard performance, but with Michael Bush potentially out of action for a few weeks, Cable is likely trying to pump up the former first round pick. McFadden is a borderline starter in PPR and bench fodder in standard leagues, but may get a chance to shine in the first few weeks if Bush is limited.
According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno was seen working out a few hours before the kickoff of their game with Pittsburgh Sunday night, and doesn't look close to returning to action. Klis noted that Moreno was "running and cutting gingerly" and speculates a partial tear of the knee ligament is responsible for the slow recovery, although the team has not confirmed that.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: According to initial reports, Moreno was supposed to be ready to go by now, so it is a bit troubling to hear he is still not near full speed. There are still a couple of weeks left, but we are likely looking at some question about his availability for week 1. Stay tuned to the news for further updates.
According to the Associated Press, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is unsure whether QB Donovan McNabb will start in the team's opener vs. Dallas a few weeks from now. McNabb suffered a sprained ankle in week two of the preseason and has been day-to-day since.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If you own McNabb, I wouldn't be overly concerned, because I think he will ultimately be fine and play in the opener. Do keep an eye on the news however and have a capable backup at the ready just in case.
According to a Tweet by Jeffrey McLane, head coach Andy Reid has confirmed that WR DeSean Jackson will remain the primary punt returner for Philadelphia this season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: For those of you who play in leagues that award return yardage, Jackson remains a top option at wide receiver. Even if you don't, Jackson will get his owners the occasional return TD as a bonus to whatever else he does on offense.
According to a report by Brian Mcintyre on Twitter, the Bengals released WR Antonio Bryant today.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: Bryant will find a home but it may take a few games for him to learn the routes. Baltimore, Minnesota, St. Louis, and Oakland come to mind, but that is my speculation. We'll keep you posted.
Cardinals RB Chris Wells has a rough night against the Bears on Saturday night, rushing for a meager 14 yards on eight carries. Meanwhile, RB Tim Hightower rushed for 62 yards on his eight carries, including a 29 yard run.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Wells has had 25 carries compared to Hightower's 17 in the preseason, but Hightower has made the most of those carries with a 4.8 per average compared to Wells 2.8 average. I believe Wells is still a decent RB2 option, but now sits closer to the bottom of that tier for me than the top. At this point, Wells is not a value grab with an ADP around pick #40, while Hightower has some serious upside as a late grab around pick #120.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, RB Jerome Harrison's fumbles, three in the last two preseason games, has gotten the attention of head coach Eric Mangini. "It's got to get better. When you have the ball in your hands, you have the whole team in your hands and there's no statistic that determines the outcome of games more than turnovers." In spite of his concern, Mangini expressed confidence that Harrison will get it figured out and isn't concerned the fumbles will be a continuing trend. Harrison himself admits he needs to do a better job and seems determined to correct the problem. "It's definitely not a part of my game. I definitely don't want it. But I'm not worried about it. It's something I've never been big on doing and I'll definitely get it fixed before [the opener] comes around."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Harrsion has been just average in preseason action to this point, with a 3.1 yards-per-carry average and a single TD. It is a small sample for sure, but I wouldn't expect Harrision to play more than a RB3 role for your fantasy squad this season.
According to reports, Raiders RB Michael Bush will need to visit a hand specialist on Sunday after breaking his thumb during Saturday's preseason contest against the 49ers.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Raiders coach Tom Cable didn't give a timetable on Bush's return. While it's certainly possible that Bush misses Week 1 due to this injury, it's way too early to speculate. We should know more later today. Stay tuned.
X: We are still a few weeks away from opening weekend, and it is not out of the question he can play with a cast on that thumb. As Smitty says, we should know more about Bush's status shortly, but in the meantime I wouldn't drop him down your rankings any - he looks primed for a nice season.
Tavaner: This is tough news for Bush and the owners who roster him, and one more reminder of the need for depth on your clubs. If you want some ideas for waiver wire pickups, stop by the forums and join in on the discussions.
Texans RB Arian Foster rushed the football 18 times for 110 yards and a touchdown against the Cowboys during the team's Week 3 preseason contest. Texans QB Matt Schaub completed 18-of-29 passes for 183 yards and 1TD in this game, while WR Andre Johnson pulled in a game-high seven passes for 79 yards. Dallas QB Tony Romo completed 13-of-18 passes for 146 yards, 0TDs and 1 INT.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: That entire Texans offense looks great, especially Arian Foster. We warned fantasy worlds about Foster's rise to the elite and stealing him away on draft day, or via trade, is likely no longer an option. As we've said for months now, Foster has the upside, talent and situation to crank out top 10-12RB numbers in 2010. That Cowboys offense looked bad in this one, but we still expect big things out of Romo, Austin and that entire Cowboys passing attack this upcoming fantasy season. The Cowboys will have to get back to the run in order to have success with the pass. They failed to run the ball at all in this game, though, as the entire team rushed for a combine 13 yards on Saturday.
Tavaner: Owners will also want to give Jeremiah Johnson a look as Foster's backup. He'd outplayed Chris Henry for the #3 spot and last night's 9 rush, 53 yard effort has some beat writers touting him as the eventual backup to Foster. He's worth a flyer at the end of the draft if you own Foster, and is a low risk, high reward pick for those teams looking for a RB4/5 on a high powered offense.
Vikings RB Adrian Peterson ran the ball 11 times for 37 yards and a touchdown during the team's third preseason outing against the Seahawks. Peterson also pulled in two passes for 36 yards. Vikings QB Brett Favre completed 16-of-26 for 187 yards, 0TDs and 2 INTs and WR Greg Camarillo pulled in four passes for 47 yards - WR Javon Walker pulled in two passes for 32 yards and 1TD. Vikings RB Toby Gerhart ran the ball seven times for 30 yards. Seahawks RB Leon Washington ran the ball six times for 16 yards in the game, while RB Justin Forsett ran the ball six times for 20 yards.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Adrian Peterson didn't dominate in the yards-per-carry department in this game, but he looked explosive. He has looked explosive all preseason long. If healthy, AP could once again crank out 1,800 total rushing/receiving yards and could duplicate last year's 18-TD total. Brett Favre didn't look good in this game, but fantasy owners shouldn't overreact. The newly acquired Greg Camarillo stepped right in and could very well lead the team in receptions until Sidney Rice returns from his hip surgery. Rice may or may not return by mid-season. As for that Seattle running back situation, it's going to be a tough one to predict heading into Week 1. Forsett has HUGE upside, but will that Seattle coaching staff use him right?
Cardinals QB Derek Anderson started during the team's third preseason game against the Bears. Anderson completed 7-of-12 passes for 94 yards and threw for a touchdown to WR Stephen Williams. Cardinals QB Matt Leinart completed 9-of-10 passes for 84 yards and threw for a touchdown to WR Steve Breaston. Cardinals RB Tim Hightower ran the ball eight times for 62 yards, while Chris Wells ran the ball eight times for 14 yards. Bears QB Jay Cutler finished just 10-of-20 for 129 yards and two interceptions - WR Johnny Knox led the team with 57 yards on three receptions. Bears RB Matt Forte ran the ball just three times for six yards, while RB Chester Taylor ran the ball five times for 36 yards.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Derek Anderson looked good in this one. While this quarterback race is still ongoing, Anderson has shown the most promise. He will look even better when Larry Fitzgerald is in the line-up. Stephen Williams is a phenomenal athlete and his future is bright. He won't crack the starting line-up right away, but the 6-5 Williams could eventually climb the depth chart. He is easily worth grabbing in those very deep dynasty leagues. Johnny Knox continues to look great. Cutler didn't look sharp, but Knox definitely appears to be his favorite target heading into 2010. Look for more Matt Forte in the team's final preseason outing next week. Forte is in for a bounce-back season.
Bucs rookie WR Mike Williams pulled in three balls for 83 yards against the Jaguars during Saturday's Week three preseason contest.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Williams continues to turn heads, and he grabbed an impressive 53-yard reception on the first play during this preseason contest. Call me crazy, but this kid could end up being as good as Dez Bryant. I still have Dez ranked as my No. 1 rookie wide receiver from that 2010 NFL Draft class, but Williams is locked into my No. 2 spot and he is inching closer and closer to Dez with every reception.
According to New York Post reports, the Jets lost linebacker Calvin Pace to a right foot injury in the third quarter last night and will be without him for the Sept. 13 season opener and likely beyond.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: Pace, a true 3 down LB, led the Jets in sacks last year (8) despite missing 4 games because of a substance-abuse suspension. He's an LB3/4 depending on your scoring. Be sure you add some depth to your LB corps if you roster Pace as we are still waiting word about the possibility of a fracture.
Eagles RB LeSean McCoy rushed five times for 28 yards (5.6) and 1TD during Friday night's Week 3 preseason outing against the Chiefs. Eagles QB Kevin Kolb went 11-of-25 for 103 yards, 0TDs and 1 INT in the contest, while WR DeSean Jackson pulled in one reception for four yards before leaving the game with a strained neck. Chiefs QB Matt Cassel went 14-of-23 for 85 yards, 1TD and 1 INT against the Eagles, while WR Dwayne Bowe pulled in four passes for 32 yards and 1TD. Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles ran the ball just six times for 40 yards and pulled in one pass for 20 yards, while WR Dexter McCluster ran the ball eight times for 47 yards.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: LeSean McCoy, one of Fantasy Football Xtreme's biggest breakout candidates entering 2010, looked extremely impressive in this contest. McCoy has top 5-10 fantasy running back upside this upcoming season (and beyond), yet he can be grabbed in the third-round come draft day. If you've already drafted, and don't currently own McCoy, buy-low before his breakout campaign begins. Kevin Kolb wasn't efficient on Friday night, but I still have tremendous confidence in the Eagles QB this upcoming fantasy season. I think Kolb is absolutely capable of having a top 5-7QB finish when all is said and done. As for DeSean Jackson's neck, we will keep you posted. Early reports suggest that Jackson will be fine for opening day, but he could get some extra rest heading into the final week of the 2010 preseason. Finally, we have to address the situation surrounding Jamaal Charles… Charles looked really good in this game, aside from his early fumble… Still, given where one has to draft Charles in 2010 drafts (2.12 – 3.02 range), I still say consider investing in other options. I'd much rather have a runner like LeSean McCoy or Ryan Mathews instead of Charles. I venture to say a lot of fantasy owners would disagree... Well, we heard the same thing months ago when we said the same thing about ranking Jermichael Finley over Antonio Gates.
According to the St.Louis Dispatch, St. Louis Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery is out for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Rookie Mardy Gilyard could get a chance to replace the injured Avery, but as Tavaner writes Below, Gibson will also get a chance to prove himself. My money is on Gilyard, at least for the long-term... the rookie has tremendous upside and will likely build a strong rapport with rising star Sam Bradford as they both mature.
Tavaner: Brandon Gibson looks to be the likely candidate to step in opposite Laurent Robinson. The Rams have a tough passing schedule for the WRs, so approach with caution. Robinson needs to stay healthy, Amendola could have value in a deep ppr league and Gibson won't be far behind, but unless a line of 4/50 excites you, grab your WRs earlier.
According to reports, rumors surfaced earlier on Friday suggesting that Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall suffered a broken arm during practice, but two sources are currently claiming that the rumor is untrue.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: The rumor suggested that Mendenhall broke his arm during practice, but everything is now pointing to that initial rumor being false. For the moment, assume Mendy will be fine, and we will all know for certain this Sunday night when the Steelers face the Broncos in a Week 3 preseason match-up. Mewelde Moore and Jonathan Dwyer almost got a huge bump in fantasy value. We will keep you posted.
According to STLToday.com, the Rams could look into the possibility of trading for Chargers WR Vincent Jackson.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: With Donnie Avery out for the entire 2010 NFL season with a torn ACL, this would be an outstanding move by the Rams. Rams majority owner Stan Kroenke might want to make a splash and get his franchise quarterback an elite weapon. Sam Bradford looks very solid for a rookie, and if the organization gets him a true WR1, Bradford could turn into an elite passer relatively soon. It won't be easy for any team to acquire V-Jax, especially with his insane contract demands, but if he was to go anywhere, this fit would make the most sense. We will keep you posted.
Tavaner: Jackson's asking price, Brandon Marshall money, is still to pricey for teams. Despite recent statements to the contrary, I expect VJ to play this season and be an instant impact player.
According to Adam Schefter, Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew "has not undergone knee surgery" like previously reported. According to Schefter, the runner is experiencing "soreness" in his knee and will be sidelined during Saturday's Week 3 preseason contest against the Bucs.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Schefter speculates that MJD won't play again until opening day - I agree. It sounds like the initial reports were wrong on this one, which is great news for all you MJD owners out there. That said, this little scare has made it really clear how important Rashad Jennings is to MJD owners in 2010. For now, expect MJD to be fully healthy and ready to rumble in Week 1 against the Colts. MJD remains a top four overall pick, but we still have him below Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson.
According to Aaron Wilson on Twitter, Maurice Jones-Drew is expected to miss remainder of preseason due to a minor knee injury. Jones-Drew recently underwent an arthroscopic procedure to clean out his knee from wear and tear.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: We are told that he could have played this week-end, if it were the regular season. He is still the # 3 or #4 off the board, but it is something owners need to be aware of. We'll let you know of any further developments. In the meantime be sure Rashad Jennings is is the guy to handcuff to MJD.
Patriots QB Tom Brady went 18-of-22 for 273 yards and 3TDs on Thursday night during the team's Week 3 preseason game against the Rams. Patriots WR Randy Moss pulled in three passes for 74 yards and 1TD, TE Rob Gronkowski grabbed three passes for 66 yards and 1TD, WR Wes Welker pulled in two passes for 41 yards. Rams QB Sam Bradford went 15-of-22 for 2TDs in the contest, while WR Michael Hoomanawanui pulled in four passes for 53 yards and 2TDs. WR Brandon Gibson pulled in four passes for 50 yards and 1TD. WR Donnie Avery pulled in two passes for 48 yards before suffering what appears to be a torn ACL, or at least a severe knee injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Even though this was only a preseason outing, and against the Rams, Brady and that Patriots offense looked phenomenal. This performance could move Brady into the third-round in upcoming drafts, but that's still good value when you consider that the Patriots' QB could finish as a top five overall scorer this season in most scoring formats. If he can manage to stay healthy, Randy Moss should have one more top 5-10 fantasy wide receiver season left. As for Wes Welker (ACL), he definitely has lost a step, but he could get back to his old self by mid-season. He will certainly be efficient enough in that offense to still produce top 20 fantasy WR numbers until then. Sam Bradford looked extra impressive in this one and he could be the real deal — In time, that is. We will keep you posted on Donnie Avery's injury, but it sounds like a torn ACL at this point. This injury moves Laurent Robinson now moves into that WR1 spot for the Rams.
Packers QB Jermichael Finley pulled in a game-high six receptions for 85 yards and 1TD on Thursday night during the team's Week 3 preseason game against the Colts. Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers went 21-of-29 for 195 yards and 3TDs, RB Ryan Grant ran the ball eight times for 36 yards, James Jones caught 4 passes for 30 yards and 1TD, Donald Driver caught 5 passes for 35 yards and 1TD. Colts QB Peyton Manning went 15-of-26 for 214 yards and had 2TDs with 1 INT, RB Joseph Addai ran the ball seven times for 60 yards (3 receptions for 40 yards), Reggie Wayne grabbed seven receptions for 96 yards and 1TD, Pierre Garcon pulled in 2 receptions for 42 yards and 1TD. Addai suffered a concussion in the contest and was replaced by back-up Donald Brown.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: We warned fantasy worlds about the emergence of Jermichael Finley before his rise to the elite occurred. Well before! We have had him ranked as our No. 1 fantasy TE all off-season long... We brought you Michael Turner in 2008, Ray Rice in 2009... say hello to Jermichael Finley in 2010. Congrats to those who took advantage! This kid is for real and we have more predictions just like this one waiting for you inside our exclusive content areas of FFX... so if you haven't subscribed to our FFX In-Season All-Access pass, do so! Back to Thursday's performers... Aaron Rodgers looks absolutely ridiculous this preseason. I won't be shocked at all if Rodgers throws for 40 touchdowns in 2010. Greg Jennings and Finley could each grab 10 touchdowns, and Rodgers could even run in 2-3 more. Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Joseph Addai and Pierre Garcon all looked fantastic as well. These two offenses are going to produce a lot of fantasy points in 2010. Monitor Addai (concussion) heading into the next two weeks... he looked great, but this head injury couldn't have come at a worse time... Donald Brown could confuse that running back situation if he performs well in Addai's place the rest of the way this preseason.
According to Bill Williamson of ESPN.com, Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles "is the guy" in Kansas City in 2010. Williamson calls the Charles vs. Thomas Jones controversy "the most overblown" coming out of Chiefs' camp.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: While I agree that Jamaal Charles still has a TON of upside, I still don't trust the situation given the cost. Charles still commands a top 24-28 overall pick in yearly league drafts, and that's just not a price I'm willing to pay. If he drops another round in value, I might seriously consider investing in upcoming drafts that I have, but I don't see that happening. T-Jones clearly has some gas left in the tank and the Chiefs want to give Jones carries. This situation looks like a headache major headache. Avoid it! I advise dynasty league owners to sell-high if the return is right. What is an acceptable sale price for Charles in dynasty formats? Jump on our fantasy football forums and get some speedy advice!
Tavaner: I don't mind the risk that goes with Charles. The Chiefs offensive line isn't going to open the holes for Thomas Jones that he is used to, while Jamaal Charles is elusive. While Jones will be great for running out the clock, if the Chiefs are ever in a position to do that, Charles will be on the field when the Chiefs are playing catchup. I can understand if owners pass on Charles as the #14 RB off the board, but don't wait too long, the Chiefs have a very favorable run schedule for the season and the fantasy playoffs. He's in the RB 14-16 range for me.
According to DallasNews.com, Cowboys WR Dez Bryant ran routes on Thursday and vowed to be ready for Week 1. "I know for a fact that I'm going to be ready for Washington," Bryant said. "I know for a fact. I feel great, I feel fine. If you've been here, you've seen me run. I've been running; I've been doing a lot of good things. So I'll be ready."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Bryant hasn't run routes since suffering his high-ankle sprain last month, so it's nice to see him on the field. Tony Romo and that Cowboys' passing attack looks a little inconsistent thus far in the preseason, but I fully expect that unit to thrive in 2010. Miles Austin should be a top 10 fantasy wide receiver this year, and Romo should have no problem having a cup of coffee with the top 5QBs come season's end. Bryant will likely be hit and miss during his rookie campaign, but his future is bright and Romo might have two top 10WRs on his hands one year from now.
According to reports, Rams WR Donnie Avery was carted off the field during Thursday's game against the Patriots. Early reports indicate that Avery suffered a potentially serious right knee injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Not good news. It sounds like a torn ACL. We will keep you posted.
Tavaner: This does not look good for Avery. Given the tough pass schedule the Rams face it's tough to recommend Brandon Gibson or Danny Amendola as anything more than flyers in ppr leagues.
According to multiple reports, Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt has decided to start Derek Anderson in front of Matt Leinart for the Cardinals' 3rd preseason game.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: Cardinal beat writer Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic, takes exception to this report by Lombardi. Either way, there are better options for your QB2, given the uncertainty and the Cardinals' expressed desire to run more.
Murph: Since most consider the 3rd preseason game the final dress rehearsal for the regular season, it certainly seems that Leinart's days as a starter have ended before they began. Leinart wouldn't have been more than a fantasy backup this year, so if this proves true, I would simply move Derek Anderson into the spot where Matt Leinart would have been on your draft lists. As far as Larry Fitzgerald is concerned, he's still one of the best wide receivers on the planet right now, so I'd be hard pressed to move him down very far. I do think there's a good chance he'll have less opportunities than with Kurt Warner, but he should still finish in the top 10 at his position with no problem.
According to reports, Texans TE Owen Daniels had a setback during his ACL recovery. The tight end reportedly suffered a stress fracture on his kneecap back in May.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: While this is concerning, Daniels is now cleared and ready to rumble. He should be in full pads by next week and ready for Week 1. He is still strong weekly starter, and has top 6-8TE upside, but players often struggle their first season back from ACL surgery, and setbacks are never good. Just curb your expectations a bit heading into that first season back.
Tavaner: Daniels may start the season slowly as he plays himself into football shape. Combine the offense he plays in with the 3rd easiest schedule for TEs and he's a value pick in the 7th round of your draft. He has a very favorable late season and fantasy playoff schedule.
According to YahooSports, Chargers WR Vincent Jackson was denied permission to talk to any teams besides the Seahawks. Jackson's agents Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod have reportedly concluded that the Chargers have no interest in trading the receiver. “I asked the Chargers if we could talk to the rest of the teams in the NFL,” Schwartz said. “They said there were certain teams they didn’t want to trade him to, and I said, ‘Fine, tell me those teams and we can exclude them.’ Even after that, they said no, so the only conclusion I can come to is they don’t want to trade him.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Feinsod, one of Jackson's agents, had this to say on the topic of his client playing for the Chargers in 2010: “Vincent would love to continue playing for Chargers, but not under the present terms.” The initial tender offered to Jackson was a one-year deal worth $3.268 million, but when Jackson did not sign the deal by June 15, the Chargers reduced the tender offer to $583,000. All this sounds bad, and Jackson is certainly no lock to return before Week 10, but he is a bargain in most yearly league drafts right now. If he returns, he is a top 10-12 fantasy wide receiver. It would be one thing if you had to draft Jackson as a fantasy WR2 with all this risk, but he is falling into the seventh- and eight-round in some August drafts. That's bargain value right there! I'll take Jackson all day long, even with all the risk, over a Donald Driver or Percy Harvin. V-Jax is a great player to trade for right now in dynasty formats.
Tavaner: Negotiating in the media is never a good sign. I expect things to heat up on the VJ front around September 2-4, with some kind of deal involving the 3.268 tender and an option for any team looking to acquire him via a trade.
According to Vic Lombardi on Twitter, Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas does not have a stress fracture in his foot, but one of the screws in his surgically repaired left foot may have come loose.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Demaryius Thomas might need another surgery, which would certainly damage his fantasy relevance in 2010. Jabar Gaffney is starting to look more and more like a strong fantasy WR3 this upcoming season. Even if Thomas' foot doesn't require surgery, Mike Williams is now my No. 2 rookie wide receiver entering 2010 and beyond. We will keep you posted on Thomas' foot. Currently there is no timetable for his return.
Tavaner: Thomas' redraft value is now in the late round flyer category. Look for the Broncos to take their time with this decision. If he needs surgery to tighten the screw he could be put on the PUP for the first 6 games, which would make sure the healing process is complete. If it's the continuing breakdown of scar tissue, the team could hold him out of the preseason games and work him in slowly. It's all speculation until the team makes some kind of announcement.
According to reports, Saints TE Jimmy Graham is dealing with a high-ankle sprain and won't play during this weekend's preseason game.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This could delay the Jimmy Graham show a bit, as I do expect him to eventually breakout in 2010. If you're in a dynasty league and Graham is available on waivers, consider grabbing him. He has huge upside! Elite upside!
According to the StarTribune, the Vikings have acquired wide receiver Greg Camarillo from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for CB Benny Sapp.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Greg Camarillo could play the slot in Minnesota, but he played on the outside in Miami. Percy Harvin could move to the outside, but we will have to see what happens in the coming weeks. A lot of people are going to jump on the Camarillo wagon because the Vikings actually went after him via trade, but he has to work himself into that WR3 spot with the Vikes before we start anointing him Brett Favre's new favorite target.
Tavaner: Camarillo is a possession receiver with good hands and will add another dimension to the Viking attack, going across the middle and on third downs. He has the potential to produce 55/620 for the Vikings this year and I believe Favre is going to love him!
According to Kevin Acee of SignOnSanDiego.com, the Vikings have made inquiries about restricted free agent WR Vincent Jackson. Acee writes that Minnesota "immediately balked" at Jackson's contract demands, as the receiver wants $50 million over five years (with $30 million guaranteed). The Seahawks are the only team that has been granted permission by the Chargers organization to speak with Jackson’s agents.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Seattle reportedly stopped contract talks once they heard Jackson's demands. Hopefully Jackson, who is suspended for the first three games of the 2010 NFL season, doesn't continue down this road -- He won't get Brandon Marshall money. The best-case scenario for fantasy worlds is Jackson returning to that San Diego line-up after he serves his three game suspension during Weeks 1-3. If Jackson doesn't sign by Sept. 4, he will be looking at a six game suspension instead of the three. If he signs by Sept. 4, his "Roster Exempt" suspension can be served concurrently with his NFL suspension. All this drama is certainly affecting Jackson's 2010 draft value, and at some point we recommend that crafty owners take advantage of this. Jackson is falling into fantasy WR4-type value, which is well worth the risk. Yes, he could be out a significant chunk of the 2010 season, and yes he has threatened to holdout through Week 10 as well, but he is also a top 10-14 fantasy WR when on the field. Philip Rivers takes a fantasy hit until V-Jax is back in the line-up, and his dynasty value absolutely takes a hit if the receiver gets traded. Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd both see a bump in fantasy value while Jackson is out.
According to Jason Reid of the Washington Post, both Chiefs RB Larry Johnson and Chiefs RB Willie Parker could both be cut before the start of the regular season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Keep an eye on undrafted rookie running back Keiland Williams. Mike Shanahan has reportedly been impressed with his pass protection as of late. Shanahan also claims that Williams has good hands and "big upside." Let me just ask these two questions. How many times has Shanahan started a rookie running back? The answer is: Too many times to count. In his long NFL coaching career, how many times has Shanahan elevated an unknown running back into his starting line-up? The answer is: Many times. Any questions? No one should go crazy on draft day and reach for this kid, as you don't need to... but a crafty owner, especially in a dynasty league, might want to roll the dice and roster this running back. If he gets into that Redskins' starting line-up at some point this upcoming season, don't say we didn't warn you WAY in advance.
Murph: This report feels a little like speculation on the writer's part, but it's a situation that's worth keeping an eye on. If both Parker and Johnson do get cut, Clinton Portis stands to receive the bulk of the running work again. Right now I don't want any part of this backfield. Without Johnson and Parker on the roster, I still don't love it, however, I would consider grabbing Portis in the 2nd half of a draft on the off chance the old Portis shows up. But be sure to have two reliable backs ahead of him.
According to reports, Vikings WR Sidney Rice has undergone hip surgery and is now expected to miss half the 2010 NFL season. The Vikings have signed Javon Walker.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: So it's now official. It's tough to say how healthy he'd even be if he did come back by mid-season, so don't count on the receiver if you own him. If you have already drafted, don't cut him, but start making other arrangements if he is one of your top starters. This news hurts Brett Favre, but actually helps Adrian Peterson and that Vikings' ground attack. Visanthe Shiancoe should quickly become Favre's favorite target and both Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian see increased value with this news.
According to Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribunes, Vikings WR Sidney Rice could undergo hip surgery and would miss half the 2010 NFL season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Sidney Rice has been on my overvalued list all off-season long and this news crushes his value. If you haven't had your draft yet, stay far away from the receiver until deep in your draft. If you have already drafted, and you own Rice, picking up Bernard Berrian is advised (if he is available). Percy Harvin sees a bump in fantasy value with this news. There is still a chance that Rice does not need surgery, or elect to have it, but given the fact that his hip isn't getting better, he is a risk even if he hits the field in Week 1. Who knows how well he will play if he moves forward and plays on opening day? Brett Favre's value takes a bit of a hit with this news, but this situation could help the fantasy values of Visanthe Shiancoe and Adrian Peterson. I am a big believer in Adrian Peterson needing Favre to keep defenses honest, but Favre is still there... No Sidney Rice equals more carries for that Vikings' ground attack, and the presence of Favre still helps AP find that room to run that might not be in the cards if Favre wasn't under center on Sundays. We will keep you posted on Rice's hip situation.
Tavaner: Rice is all but undraftable based on this news, but it's not the first time he'd been told he needs surgery. This is only the latest advice, and he's gotten it twice before. It will come down to if he can handle the pain. He can get shots for the pain and postpone the surgery, or he can get it taken care of now. The fact that this is a contract year has surely influenced his decisions. I'm guessing he'll try to play through it before having surgery.
Murph: The latest tweet this morning from Chip Scoggins indicates Rice went through with the surgery. Rice said the surgery went well, but like Smitty and Tavaner said, this kills his fantasy value for right now.
According to ESPN, Giants RB Brandon Jacobs confirmed that he is finally 100 percent healthy and that his neck strain is no longer an issue. "It's fine, it is doing good," Jacobs said about his neck. "Nothing big. I will be out there today, full speed, doing what is called upon me to do ... I feel good, 100-percent, my leg is feeling great, my hip is good, the ankle, the toes, everything is good."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Brandon Jacobs is a tough guy to rank right now, and his cloudy fantasy value also makes it tough to rank Ahmad Bradshaw. Since Jacobs is expected to be available for Saturday's contest against the Ravens, fantasy worlds will be able to get a taste of what he still has left. Bradshaw appears to have great fantasy value at this point and is probably the player to own in that backfield if you have to grab just one. However, the combo of the two makes a sneaky flex-option in 2010. Bradshaw, who had three off-season foot/ankle surgeries, actually looks 100 percent himself. He was once a potential bust candidate for us entering 2010 drafts, but his amazing off-season recovery has him looking more like a bargain grab this season.
Tavaner: Jacobs and Bradshaw are both going in the middle of the 6th round in redraft leagues. Bradshaw has added value in PPR, especially with Eli Manning improving his accuracy. With Jacobs as the option at the goal line, he makes a solid RB3 but he also faces one of the toughest RB schedules in the league. With the likes of Foster, Forsett and Harrison also available there may be better, more fantasy friendly, options.
According to the St Louis Dispatch, Sam Bradford will start this Thursday's exhibition game against the New England Patriots. A.J.Feely suffered a thumb injury and got an MRI on it Sunday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: The Sam Bradford era could be starting sooner than expected. It may only be an exhibition game, but this is how jobs are won or lost. Hopefully, Feely only has a sprained thumb and Bradford can continue to learn from the sidelines. Unless you are a dynasty leaguer, Bradford has no fantasy value.
Vikings RB Adrian Peterson ran the football six times for 17 yards and caught three balls for 25 yards during the Vikings' second preseason contest against the 49ers. Vikings QB Brett Favre went 1-of-1 for 13 yards, while 49ers QB Alex Smith went 9-of-13 for 88 yards, RB Anthony Dixon ran the ball 20 times for 51 yards and 1TD, and WR Ted Ginn pulled in two receptions for 65 yards.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Adrian Peterson averaged just 2.8 yards-per-carry, but that stat doesn't tell the entire story here. Peterson looked explosive and shifty in this contest. He was heavily involved in the passing game, pulling in three passes for 25 yards in his somewhat limited action. If healthy in 2010, Peterson should have no problem cranking out another 1,300+ yards on the ground, while grabbing more than 45-50 receptions for 500+ yards. He should also score 15-18 total touchdowns this upcoming season. I have Ray Rice ranked as my number one fantasy football running back heading into 2010, but you can't go wrong with any of the big three (Peterson, Rice or Chris Johnson).
Tavaner: In the last exhibition game one play, in particular, stands out; Peterson's "ole" attempt at blocking Patrick Willis on a pass play. For all his greatness, Adrian Peterson is weak in pass protection. I can't see the Vikings risking Favre too often with Adrian "The Matador" Peterson as the third down back. While I expect Peterson to better last years high in receptions (43), the Vikings still need a back for pass protection on obvious passing plays.
Packers TE Jermichael Finley pulled in 4 receptions 48 yards and 1TD during Saturday's preseason contest against the Seahawks. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers went 8-of-11 for 116 yards and 2TDs, while RB Brandon Jackson rushed the football 11 times for 80 yards and 1TD. Packers WR Greg Jennings pulled in one pass for 56 yards and 1TD. Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck went 11-of-15 for 127 yards and 1TD, while WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh pulled in four passes for 60 yards. Seahawks RB Leon Washington ran the ball four times for 19 yards and a score and RB Justin Forsett ran the ball five times for 13 yards.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: It's no secret that one of our biggest breakout candidates this year is Jermichael Finley. In controversial fashion, Finley has remained atop our tight end rankings all off-season in all formats. While most fantasy owners will still draft Antonio Gates as the No. 1 tight end on draft day, Finley's preseason performances might just make a handful of people a little more bold come draft day. There is nothing wrong with reaching for Finley in 2010... he makes a fine selection at the top of the fifth-round, but in dynasty leagues, I've grabbed him in the middle of the fourth. If you think that's crazy, well, I say enjoy the Jermichael Finley show in 2010! Aaron Rodgers dropped two scores in this game and commands a look as this year's top fantasy QB. Greg Jennings looked like the fantasy WR1 that he is, and Brandon Jackson impressed me quite a bit. He is a must-have handcuff for all Ryan Grant owners in 2010.
Tavaner: Smitty is is mid-season form on these! Finley is also lining up in the slot, which is going to cause all kinds of problems for DBs trying to cover him. Don't hesitate to grab him at the top of the 5th round, his current ADP. He could give you double digit TDs!
Chargers RB Ryan Mathews rushed the ball 12 times for 53 yards and also had one reception for 13 yards during Saturday's preseason contest against the Cowboys. Chargers WR Malcom Floyd pulled in three passes for 47 yards, TE Antonio Gates pulled in one reception for seven yards, and QB Philip Rivers went 11-of-15 for 125 yards and 1 INT. Cowboys WR Miles Austin pulled in two passes for 15 yards and 1TD in the contest, while QB Tony Romo went 4-of-11 for 30 yards, 1TD and 1 INT.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Ryan Mathews has looked nothing but impressive so far this preseason. In two contests, Mathews has racked up 103 rushing yards on 21 carries (4.9 YPC). Some call him a solid RB2, but I say he is the perfect fantasy RB1 if you have those bookend 12/13 picks in 2010. Grab a stud fantasy WR like Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson, then grab Mathews. Philip Rivers didn't look great in this one and he could have a somewhat disappointing start to the 2010 fantasy season with Vincent Jackson set to miss the first three weeks due to a suspension. As for some of the Cowboys in this game, Tony Romo and Austin Miles appear to have picked up right where they left off in 2009. Both have the potential to be top five at their position in 2010.
Texans RB Arian Foster ran the football six times for 28 yards and 1TD during Saturday's preseason contest against the Saints. Texans QB Matt Schaub was 8-of-10 for 117 yards, while WR Andre Johnson pulled in two passes for 15 yards. On the Saints side, QB Chase Daniel went 15-of-21 for 182 yards, 3TDs and 1 INT. Saints WR Marques Colston pulled in four passes for 49 yards, while Adrian Arrington pulled in three passes for 71 yards and 1TD. RB Pierre Thomas ran the ball seven times for 24 yards and pulled in two passes for 38 yards and 1TD. RB Reggie Bush ran the ball seven times for 49 yards and 1TD.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Arian Foster is most likely no longer undervalued heading into 2010. We have been talking this kid up for over a year now and hopefully some of you had a chance to grab him already in early 2010 drafts. If you haven't drafted yet, Foster might start being considered a strong fantasy RB2 from this point moving forward. He could be a top 12RB this year, so he can still, without question, earn that kind of value, but stealing him away in the middle rounds is probably no longer a draft day option. We love Foster this year! Pierre Thomas looked good in this game, and so did Reggie Bush. That backfield will do just fine in 2010. How about Chase Daniel? Can you say dynasty handcuff?
Bears RB Matt Forte rushed five times for 109 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders during Saturday's preseason contest. Bears WR Johnny Knox caught one pass for 22 yards and a touchdown in the game, while QB Jay Cutler went 7-of-15 for 99 yards and 1TD. On the other side of the ball, RB Michael Bush ran the ball eight times for 26 yards, while QB Jason Campbell went 10-of-20 for 170 yards and 1 INT (1 rushing TD).
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Matt Forte could thrive in Mike Martz's offense in 2010. We have been saying this all off-season... Chester Taylor is not a threat to the 24-year-old Forte. Forte looked like a stud on Saturday, especially on his 89-yard touchdown scamper. Forte, a disappointing first-round fantasy football pick last year, could bounce-back in a major way in 2010. He is a bargain in dynasty leagues, or at least he was... this is just the preseason, but stats aren't the story here... it's how well Forte ran the football. He could be one of the biggest fantasy RB2 steals at year's end. Johnny Knox is also showing flashes of what is likely to come in 2010 - He is starting to look like Jay Cutler's top receiver at this point. That entire Mike Martz driven offense, led by Cutler, could surprise this fantasy season.
According to Adam Caplan, test results on Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin came back negative today. Maclin suffered what the team is calling a shoulder contusion in Friday night's game against the Bengals.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Maclin looked pretty good before he suffered what looked like a serious injury during the game. Maclin remains a borderline WR2 for me, although he is currently going at a WR3 price.
WR Terrell Owens caught three passes for 67 yards in Friday night's preseason game against the Eagles, including a 43-yard catch down the right sideline to set up a touchdown. Owens continues to be QB Carson Palmer's primary target in the preseason and now has a total of nine catches for 108 yards.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Owens continues to move up our rankings at FFX and currently sits at a solid WR3 ranking, closing in on WR2 status. An incredible turnaround for a guy who wasn't even signed just a few weeks ago. Chad Ochocinco's value continues to slide in the wake of Owens' climb, and both are now nearly evenly ranked in our opinion.
According to a Tweet by Chip Scoggins, WR Sidney Rice is not quite sure he will be ready to play in the Vikings opener against the Saints on September 9th, saying "it's up in the air".
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It is really hard to feel confident about drafting Rice right now, even with Favre back in the picture. This latest setback happened in practice Friday when, according to reports, he felt pain in his hip during a drill. Complicating matters is his contract - he is only due to make $550,000 this season - which could very well be a factor in his willingness to play through any discomfort. On top of all of that there are reports that the Vikings worked out free agent WR Javon Walker on Friday. With the current health issues plaguing both Rice and Percy Harvin, it is not a surprise.
According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, the San Diego Chargers have granted permission for the Seahawks to discuss a contract with disgruntled WR Vincent Jackson. Cole says no significant progress has happened in negotiations to this point, but the Chargers are "committed" to trading Jackson based on their belief he will not report to the team anytime soon. They also expect his asking price to be nearly $9 million per season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: While it is good to hear something happening with Jackson, we are still a long way off from anything substantial in this standoff. Not only do the Seahawks have to work out a deal with Jackson, but they have to give compensation to the Chargers, which could be as high as a second round pick - that is what the Dolphins gave in exchange for Brandon Marshall.
According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, rookie RB Jonathan Dwyer is in danger of not making the Steelers final roster. Bouchette admits he had bought into Dwyer being the backup to Rashard Mendenhall, but has since changed his mind based on Dwyer's rough start to camp and overall lack of interest in the game. He quoted coach Kirby Wilson as saying "Dwyer has to learn that football is important to him all of the time, not just once in a while."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I haven't been as high on Dwyer as others, but it is hard to imagine him not making the cut with the lack of quality depth at RB. Between this news and his injuries, seasonal owners should think twice about handcuffing him to Mendy; dynasty owners should knock him down some in their rookie rankings as well, but not drastically. Somewhere in the middle of the second round sounds about right to me.
Patriots WR Wes Welker caught two passes for twenty yards in his first game action of the season following offseason knee surgery. Welker was in the game for a total of six snaps as the Patriots attempt to ease him back into game play.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Welker's timing with Brady looked good and he seems to be rounding into form for the regular season, an amazing feat considering the severity of the injury and the fact that it only happened 8 months ago. Welker's ADP is continuing to climb in PPR, he currently sits as WR17 - still not bad value if you can land him right around that spot. Point is, you won't sneak him onto your team in the later rounds anymore, you'll need to nab him in the 4th round if you want him.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, Bills rookie CJ Spiller tore off a 31-yard run against the Colts in their preseason game Thursday night. Spiller started the game due to injuries to Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: At halftime, Spiller has 10 carries, 54 yards and a TD. Pretty impressive start for a guy who missed a lot of time in a contract dispute. As I have said before, Spiller will get his touches in this offense regardless of what happens in the battle between Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch. He'll serve as a very good RB3 in standard scoring, and a borderline RB2 in PPR. Dynasty owners will need to be in the top 3 to have a chance at him in rookie drafts.
Updating an earlier news story, according to a Tweet by Judd Zulgad, Vikings WR Percy Harvin is resting comfortably in the hospital after collapsing during practice Thursday morning. Although alert, Harvin will remain in the hospital overnight.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This is great news after a scary incident on the field. The thing I have found most interesting is some players expressing that the Vikings locker room had some doubts about the validity of Harvin's suffering – thinking he was dogging it to some degree. After seeing his episode in practice first hand they now realize how real his condition is.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Bears receiving coach Darryl Drake believes wide receivers Devin Aromashodu, Johnny Knox, and Devin Hester are all legitimate starters at WR, and is unwilling to name any one of them in particular ahead of the others in terms of their role in the offense. "All three of those guys are at the top of the depth chart. We've got three starters. There ain't no buts. You listen to what I said. We have three starters right now."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Trying to identify which of these three might emerge as Cutler's favorite is challenging because we have read stories on all of them indicating how well they are playing. Most want to anoint Knox as the no. 1 guy, but with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz in town, it could be any of the three. Right now, all hover in the WR3/4 range for me and all have tremendous upside, the key will be drafting the right one.
Recapping the Eagles training camp from LeHigh, Geoff Mosher of the Wilmington News Journal tagged RB LeSean McCoy as his offensive standout. According to Mosher, McCoy was able to improve his pass-catching skills and worked on his inside running and he believes McCoy "can handle the workload" of a No. 1 running back.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Last year at this time, I pegged McCoy as my #1 rookie player and nothing has happened to change my mind on him. He has quietly gone about his business in camp and I believe (along with others at FFX) he will be one of the big surprises of 2010 at running back in spite of all the doubters out there. If you play in PPR, I'm high enough on McCoy that I consider him a RB1, and his ADP is low enough that if you wanted to go ahead and draft a couple of studs at the WR position and then grab McCoy in the 3rd round, you'd be doing just fine to start a draft. In standard scoring, McCoy is still an RB2 in my book, but you'll probably be able to draft him at a lower price there as well.
According to Matt Williamson of Scouts, Inc., Jets TE Dustin Keller is expected to play a major role in the Jets offense this season and the author makes a bold prediction that he will lead the team in receptions.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The main thing that strikes me about this article (and others in recent days) is just how many good, solid fantasy tight ends there are this season. If your league requires a starter at this position, your best bet is to sit back and wait on guys like Keller and Zach Miller. Why spend a 4th or 5th rounder on JerMichael Finley, Jason Witten or Antonio Gates when you can get a productive TE like Keller or Miller in rounds 8-10? There is a lot of TE value late in drafts this year.
According to the Indy Football Report, WR Austin Collie looks primed to make a leap in his second season with the Colts, and it will be a surprise if he doesn't become an impact player for the team. According to reports, he has worked throughout the offsesaon on improving his skills through film study and extra work on the field – even joining fellow WR Anthony Gonzalez back in July to work on route running with Peyton Manning.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: We know a few things about the Colts. We know Peyton Manning is one of the top QBs in the game and automatically makes even his 3rd and 4th options better than some 1st and 2nd options on other teams. We also know that Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark will get the bulk of the looks from him, and that leaves Pierre Garcon, Collie and, to a lesser degree, Anthony Gonzalez left to fight for the rest. To me, Garcon is still the one to own if you are given the choice, but Collie is not that far off and can be had at a far cheaper price. His current ADP has him at a WR5 price, but he will probably produce closer to a WR3 this season.
According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, some individuals inside the Dolphins organization "are concerned" that Broncos WR Brandon Marshall "will revert to the petulant behavior" when things don't go his way.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: All of this stems from a string of dropped passes by Marshall, two in Saturday’s game, followed by three dropped passes during Monday’s practice. Marshall reportedly punted the football after a drop on Monday, but who cares? Honestly, this isn't "petulant behavior" by any means, and the article linked to this posts actually says this very same thing. Doubt Marshall all you want in 2010 (and beyond), but the stud has cranked out three straight 100-catch seasons and has only been in the NFL for four years. He did all that fantasy damage with a whole lot of drama. If you want to know how much I believe in Brandon Marshall this upcoming season, despite my doubts in the past, check out his upcoming player spotlight.
According to Oakland Tribune, TE Zach Miller continues to develop a rapport with new Raiders QB Jason Campbell, and he has become a primary target in the red zone. Head coach Tom Cable has taken notice and likes what he has seen from this pair too. "I really like it with that whole group, but those two guys are really starting to develop something, for sure. You take him in the red zone; you need a touchdown in that situation. You saw who he went to."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: With the youth and inexperience of the WR corps, it is not surprising Campbell has found his security blanket in Zach Miller. The real surprise here is that Miller currently has an ADP that makes ranks him a TE10. I figure he should be able to easily add to last year's 66/805/3 with a real QB at the helm, and that makes him a mighty big steal on draft day.
According to reports, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin hasn't ruled out the idea of starting QB Dennis Dixon in Week 1. “He’s got to take the job if he’s going to take it,” Tomlin told NFL Network. “He’s doing a nice job thus far, and we’re going to continue to give him opportunities to do that.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: I like Dennis Dixon a lot more than Byron Leftwich, and even if Leftwich gets the nod in Week 1, I predict that Dixon starts by Week 2. Look for a quarterback controversy to kick into high gear in the coming weeks. All that said, Big Ben (suspension) should be back for the Steelers' fifth 2010 contest, an event that should help out Mike Wallace owners quite a bit. I have Mike Wallace pegged as one of the most underrated breakout receivers heading into 2010. Even if he gets off to a slow start while he awaits a Roethlisberger return, Wallace could total 1,100 yards and 7-8 scores by season's end.
According to reports, Vikings QB Brett Favre landed in Eden Prairie, Minnesota around 4:30 PM on Tuesday. An earlier report by ESPN's Bob Holtzman suggested that Favre will formally announce on Tuesday that he is in fact returning for yet another NFL season. Then a report surfaced a few minutes later suggesting that announcement by Favre will come on Wednesday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Brett Favre was reportedly headed straight to the Vikings' facility. Sidney Rice owners should be extremely pleased with this news. With Favre under center, Rice is a strong fantasy WR2 (if not better). Without Favre under center, Rice is fantasy WR3. Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels will have to wait another year… or two, but we can cross that drama bridge when we get to the 2011 off-season. For the record, I have always believed in Sage Rosenfels, and I feel he would do fine if ever given the keys to the starting line-up in Minnesota. As for Adrian Peterson, we have differing opinions here at FFX on how a Favre return affects his fantasy value. Personally, I think Peterson would have a much tougher time finding room to run without Favre in the line-up, but an argument can be made that more carries (and AP would have received more touches if Favre called it quits) would have equated for fantasy production… but that's a topic we can pick back up next off-season as we wait for Favre's 2011 decision.
According to Jacksonville.com, QB David Garrard will continue to be the team's starter as long as he's healthy.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I love the fact that Jack Del Rio has to all of a sudden answer questions about his starter because a journeyman backup came into a preseason game and threw a few TDs. As is the case every year, overreaction rules the month of August. Garrard is what he is, a pretty good NFL QB that will serve fantasy owners well as a legit QB2.
Murph: There was never any real quarterback controversy to begin with here. Garrard struggled in 3 series during his most recent preseason start, and then Luke McCown entered the game and threw 3 touchdowns. If this were the regular season, then we might have a story, but for now Garrard is safe. I wouldn't want to make Garrard my every week starter, but with Mike Sims-Walker ready to have a breakout season, and with Maurice Jones-Drew behind him, Garrard could be a valuable late-round pick to have for bye weeks and injury insurance.
According to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, there are rumors the Bengals are considering an injury settlement with WR Antonio Bryant so they can ultimately release him. Bryant was signed by the Bengals in the offseason to a four year contract worth $24 million, but have since signed Terrell Owens as their starter opposite Chad Ochocinco.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Where there is smoke, there is fire. This rumor has continued to build momentum over the last several weeks, and the signing of Owens has only served to add fuel to that speculation. As the uncertainty builds, his value continues to drop for me, and at this point I'm not sure I'd draft him at all.
According to Arizona Central reports, The Cardinals are optimistic that receiver Larry Fitzgerald will recover from a sprained knee ligament in time to play in the season opener at St. Louis on Sept. 12. Fitzgerald suffered a right medial-collateral sprain
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I have little doubt Fitzgerald will be ready, and he remains my #2 ranked WR in all formats behind Andre Johnson.
Tavaner: Optimistic is not certain. Any missed time by Fitzgerald during the regular season, as a precautionary measure, will only emphasize the run game with Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower. The injury is sure to be a hot topic in the forums, so be sure to join the discussion to get the latest news!
According to KansasCity.com, Chiefs coach Todd Haley said on Monday that RB Jamaal Charles' role in the offense is "still to be determined."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Jamaal Charles has way more PPR appeal than Thomas Jones heading into this upcoming fantasy season, but it isn't outside of the realm of possibility that Thomas Jones outperforms Charles in 2010 (assuming Jones stays healthy, which is assuming a lot given that he turns 32 this month). Haley had some interesting things to say about Charles, a lot of which should concern Charles owners, or prospective Charles owners, heading into 2010. “Jamaal is a developing player,” Haley said Monday. “Jamaal is a player that, last year at times in that development, had good days, bad days and in-between days like a lot of other guys. That is part of the development, and that is part of becoming a dependable player on a daily basis.”
X: While it is disconcerting that Haley continues to talk Charles down, I don't believe for a minute he won't be leading this rushing attack for the Chiefs in 2010. There is a little more concern for me in standard scoring than in PPR with Charles, but I'd still draft him as a solid RB2 either way.
According to reports, Giants undrafted rookie WR Victor Cruz pulled in six passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns during Monday night's preseason opener against the Jets. Giants QB Eli Manning left the contest after suffering a gash to his forehead.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Wow. Say hello to Victor Cruz. Cruz is a phenomenal athlete, but with receivers like Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham already locked into the Giants' top three wide receiver spots, it's a shame to see a kid this talented lock into such a crowded situation. I say "locked" because this spectacular performance surely secured himself a roster spot with the Giants this season – It's a shame he isn't on a different roster. As for Eli Manning, who looked as if he was auditioning for a role on True Blood... he should be fine. Brandon Jacobs made that abundantly clear in a post-game interview. His gash to the head occurred on a botched play where Calvin Pace hit him in the back knocking off Eli's helmet. The gash required stitches, but there is absolutely nothing to be concerned about.
According to ESPN, free agent RB Ladell Betts has signed a one year deal with the Saints for $775,000 with incentives that could take the final tally up to $1 million.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Betts provides some depth and insurance behind Thomas, but I don't see him taking a whole lot of carries away. If you own Thomas, it probably isn't necessary to add Betts as a handcuff unless you can get him on the cheap and you have the roster space.
According to reports, Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed on Monday that RB Ryan Grant was in fact concussed during the Packers' preseason opener.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Ryan Grant didn't look good during the opener, rushing three times for just six yards - He even had a fumble. It's only the preseason, but I have never been a big believer in Ryan Grant's long-term value. I'd avoid Grant this year in upcoming 2010 fantasy drafts, and consider selling high in dynasty formats. He should have a decent season in 2010, as neither Brandon Jackson or James Starks (hamstring) have what it takes to unseat Grant this season, but I still think Grant is overvalued right now, especially in dynasty formats.
According to reports, the 49ers have signed RB Brian Westbrook to a one-year deal worth $1.25 million. The deal reportedly includes another $1.25 million in incentives.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Even after rookie Anthony Dixon totaled 122 yards during the team's preseason opener, the 49ers still needed a runner to replace the recently retired Glen Coffee. Brian Westbrook turns 31 before the 2010 NFL season kicks off, but he could become the team's No. 2 running back option in 2010. I still like Dixon myself, but the injury prone Westy will get a chance to play behind Frank Gore. Someone is going to thrive behind that 49ers' offensive line this year if Gore goes down. I have some serious concerns about Gore's long-term value, but handcuffing a runner to Gore just got a little bit more complicated.
X: Hard to know how much Westy has left in the tank, but he won't get much chance to show it unless Gore gets injured. If you own Gore, or end up with him in your draft, I wouldn't go overboard trying to acquire Westbrook as a handcuff.
According to Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune, WR Johnny Knox is the perfect fit for new offensive coordinator Mike Martz's offense, and he has stood out among all of the wide receivers as the best route runner. Knox caught two passes for 47 yards in his first preseason action of the season against San Diego.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Knox is currently sitting as a midline WR4 in our rankings, but could probably be pressed into a WR3 role in larger leagues with his upside.
Bengals RB Bernard Scott ran the football eight times for 65 yards on Sunday against the Broncos. He also pulled in two receptions for 48 yards. Bengals RB Cedric Benson ran the football nine times for 30 yards and 1TD in the contest.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Bernard Scott is a beast in waiting, and he proved that on his 48-yard scamper, and then again during his 46-yard reception. That said, Cedric Benson looked just as sharp in this outing. Benson should crank out strong fantasy RB2-type numbers per game in 2010, but if ever forced to start, Scott could absolutely throw down similar-type numbers. As we recommend in our recently posted RB Handcuff article, Scott is a must-have for all Benson owners in 2010.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak has confirmed rookie RB Ben Tate will need surgery to repair the ankle injury he suffered in their first preseason game. "It's going to require surgery. So we'll probably have a definite answer for you sometime tomorrow. Very unfortunate. It doesn't look good. That's the best I can describe it for right now."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: We have been talking up Arian Foster for almost a year now, but it's hard to call him a sleeper at this point - He is starting to become everyone's favorite middle-round grab. Even with his spike in fantasy value, Foster could still outperform his draft position by quite a bit in 2010. Check out Foster's most recent Player Spotlight, where I crank out full-season projections for the runner.
X: Kubiak did not confirm if Tate will miss the season, but it is hard to see any other outcome after reading through some of the reports out there right now. I'm not sure it will make a difference from a fantasy standpoint anyway, Tate will be hard pressed to make any sort of impact even if he does somehow get back on the field late in the season.
According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald underwent a precautionary MRI on his right knee after getting dinged up during preseason play against the Texans. The tests revealed a knee sprain and Fitzgerald will supposedly be conservative with it over the next few weeks.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Don't expect to see Fitzgerald in any more preseason action this year, and I'd expect his practice reps to be cut down as well. He's not a guy that really needs the reps anyway.
According to the Buffalo News, Bills RB Marshawn Lynch will miss 3-4 weeks with an ankle sprain suffered in during the team's preseason game against the Redskins on Friday night.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Injuries have now opened the door for C.J. Spiller. The rookie will get his chance to step up and prove that he is in fact a between-the-tackles type of runner. Spiller all of the sudden has strong fantasy RB3/flex-type value as we head into the second half of August.
X: Lynch should be ready for the season opener, but rookie CJ Spiller now has an opening with Lynch and Fred Jackson out with injuries for the next month.
According to the Buffalo News, RB Fred Jackson will miss at least four weeks with a broken hand suffered during the Bills first preseason game against the Redskins on Friday night. The most optimistic return date would be the season opener against Miami on September 12th.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The good news is that the broken bone is in his left hand, so that could mean a quicker return than would be possible if it were his right hand. Either way, Jackson is ready for the regular season at best, but will miss a game or two at worst. This, combined with Marshawn Lynch's injury will open the door for CJ Spiller in this offense.
According to John McClain of The Houston Chronicle, the ankle injury suffered by Texans RB Ben Tate during Saturday's preseason opener could be season-ending.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: The thinking here is that Ben Tate's ankle is broken, but we should know something more concrete later today. Arian Foster has been a big-time sleeper of ours since last off-season, but if Tate is actually done for the year, Foster's ADP is going to skyrocket. Steve Slaton will likely get some decent third-down work in 2010, but because of his injury history and fumbling issues, he is far from a threat to steal the starting job away from Foster. I wouldn't be shocked one single bit if Foster rushed for 1,100+ yards and 6-8TDs in 2010.
Chargers RB Ryan Mathews rushed the football nine times for 50 yards during Saturday's preseason opener against the Bears. Mathews also added two receptions for 11 yards. Chargers QB Philip Rivers went 4-for-6 for 62 yards and one touchdown in the outing. Bears QB Jay Cutler went 2-for-2 for 47 yards in the contest, while WR Devin Aromashodu pulled in 4 receptions for 78 yards and 1TD - Bears WR Johnny Knox pulled in two receptions for 47 yards.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Ryan Mathews looked really good in this game, showing tremendous burst and toughness. In that Chargers offense, Mathews could absolutely crank out top 8-10 running back numbers in 2010. As for the Bears players in this game, both Devin Aromashodu and Johnny Knox looked sharp. One of the two should breakout in 2010 under Mike Martz. Jay Cutler will remain extremely underrated heading all the way into September.
According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Texans rookie RB Ben Tate sustained a leg injury after a 12-yard run against Arizona in preseason action. Tate was unable to put weight on his leg as he was helped off the field and was then carted off into the locker room for examination.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: As McClain points out in his Tweet, it doesn't look good. We'll post additional information as it comes in, for now let's hope the injury is a minor one.
Packers QB Aaron Rodgers completed 12 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown to WR Greg Jennings in a quarter and half of play against the Browns Saturday night. The running game for the Packers was far less effective, with RB Ryan Grant getting only six yards on three carries before leaving the game with an apparent head injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Rodgers is going to put up monster numbers this season, it is just a matter of how high you'll need to go to get him. I have him pegged as a late first rounder, but you'll see him go in the top 5 in some leagues. As for Grant, the early news is a concussion, we'll post more news on the injury as it comes in.
WR Andre Johnson was in midseason form Saturday night during the Texans preseason game against the Cardinals, catching three passes for 59 yards and a touchdown. The score was a 44-yard bomb from QB Matt Schaub on Houston's second possession of the game.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Andre Johnson is as sure a thing as there is at WR. He is every bit worth his draft ranking inside the top 10 overall, and I have him at #5 overall on my PPR rankings.
The Buccaneers offensive starters looked sharp in their debut against the Dolphins on Saturday night, despite a driving rain and muddy field. QB Josh Freeman completed all four of his passes for 53 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown to Sammie Stroughter. Rookie WR Mike Williams was also in on the action, catching a 30-yard sideline pass, while RB Cadillac Williams carried four times for 21 yards. All four players were pulled from the game after their second drive was completed in the first quarter.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Mike Williams has pulled into a virtual tie for me with Demaryius Thomas on my rookie rankings. With the recent hype surrounding Williams and his performance tonight, you can expect a lot more awareness of him and that means his value is on the rise. I'm afraid if you want to make sure you land him, you'll probably need to be in the top 5 of your rookie draft, especially if you play in PPR. Stroughter looks like the favorite to be the no. 2 WR right now, although I'm not sure that offense can produce enough to consider him a fantasy starter just yet. Caddy looked strong as well, but with his injury history leave him as a low-end RB3 on your rankings.
According to NFL.com, Colts TE Dallas Clark injured his leg during practice Friday and has been declared out for the team's game versus the 49ers on Sunday. Head coach Jim Caldwell does not believe the injury is serious and expects Clark to be back at practice next week. "Just got a bit of a little tweak. He won't play in the game obviously, but he'll be back soon."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Looks like a minor issue, good news for both the Colts and Clark owners.
According to BuffaloBills.com, Bills RB Fred Jackson will miss the remainder of the 2010 NFL preseason due to a hand injury. "Fred hurt his hand and we hope to be able to get him back for the first game,” Bills coach Chan Gailey said. “We’re not sure.” Marshawn Lynch injured his ankle on Friday night, leaving rookie C.J. Spiller as the team's top healthy running back.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Fred Jackson getting banged up makes a Marshawn Lynch trade a lot less likely. Lynch actually injured his ankle on Friday night, and while his injury is expected to be a minor one, a trade out of Buffalo is starting to look highly unlikely at this point. With Jackson out until at least Week 1, C.J. Spiller should get a grip of first-team touches heading into the rest of the preseason. If forced to draft just one of those Buffalo runners in 2010, I'm starting to think that C.J. Spiller is the runner to own. That could change in the coming weeks and months, but I highly doubt it. Spiller is a big play threat and he is extremely undervalued right now, especially in dynasty formats.
X: The Bills looked pretty bad against the Redskins and my concern is that team – and offense – as a whole. If things don't improve drastically, the Bills will find themselves behind early and often this season, and that does not bode well for the stats of their runners. Between that and the uncertainty of this rotation, I'd just as soon take a pass on this backfield and go in another direction.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Jaguars WR Mike Sims-Walker left with a shoulder injury during his preseason game Friday night against the Eagles. The severity of the injury is unknown.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: There isn't much more information to report, so we'll have to just wait until more is known before commenting on any potential ramifications for his fantasy value.
The Eagles opened their preseason schedule Friday night versus the Jaguars, and QB Kevin Kolb made the most of his time in the lineup by completing six passes for 95 yards against a Jacksonville team missing nearly half of their starting defensive line.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Kolb looked in command throughout and had a sure TD pass dropped by Celek in the endzone. It is far too early to read anything into this performance, but with the information we have, Kolb looks like he will develop into a great QB in this league. I wouldn't draft him as a starter just yet, but he's an upper end QB2 with the potential to be a fantasy starter as the season progresses.
Tavaner: In a redraft league with a mid to low draft slot, I wouldn't hesitate to grab Kolb as my #1QB in the 6th - 7th rounds. His ADP is at the top of the 6th and he went at 7.07 in a current experts draft. His value will only increase the deeper we get into the pre-season and I'd not be surprised to find a lot of teams in the fantasy playoffs with Kolb as their starting QB.
According to various media outlets, 49ers RB Glen Coffee has informed the team of his intent to retire after just one season of play. Jason La Canfora confirms the retirement, but says that no papers have been filed with the NFL office as of yet.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is kind of shocking, given Glenn Coffee is only 23 years-old, but honestly we had Anthony Dixon pegged to back-up Frank Gore in 2010. So for us, nothing has really changed aside from us having to delete Coffee from the bottom of our running back rankings. Early reports suggest that Coffee could be headed into ministry, but it's unclear at this point what is absolutely driving Coffee to call it quits. Dixon is a must-have for all Frank Gore owners in 2010 – With Gore's injury history, and bad knees, it isn't crazy to think that Dixon could start a couple games this upcoming season (at the very least). If Gore goes down for a significant amount of time, Dixon could step into one of the best running back situations in the entire league.
X: From what I have read, this came as a complete surprise even to head coach Mike Singletary, and some are speculating he is pursuing the priesthood. If any event, with Coffee out of the picture Anthony Dixon will likely move into the no. 2 role behind starter Frank Gore, although that likely means more touches for Gore rather than an expanded role for Dixon.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers have sent a letter to WR Vincent Jackson informing him that he has until August 20th to sign his tender offer or they will place him on the Roster Exempt List. Placement on the list would make Jackson ineligible to play for three games after the day of signing. That effectively means Jackson has until Week 8 to report to the team, or risk losing an entire year of eligibility for an accrued season of play.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: By all accounts, it appears Jackson is prepared to sit out the entire season. That said, this move by the Chargers will either prod him to finally report to camp, or it will cause him to dig in his heels even further. As days turn into weeks, Jackson's fantasy value will continue to decline. Stay tuned.
According to KCChiefs.com, both Chiefs running backs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones "have taken plenty of reps with the first team throughout training camp."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is a tough backfield to predict heading into 2010. My advice is to stay away from these two runners this upcoming fantasy season. Or, use a late low-risk selection on Thomas Jones and let someone else roll the dice with Jamaal Charles this year. I like Charles, but I just haven't seen enough out of him yet to treat him like a high-end RB2, and that's the kind of price you are going to have to pay if you want him on your roster in 2010. With the selection one would have to use on Charles this upcoming fantasy football season, I'd much rather invest in a LeSean McCoy, or an undervalued fantasy WR1 like Greg Jennings.
Tavaner: Jamaal Charles is one of my favorite break out candidates coming into this season. However, if HC Todd Haley continues to list Thomas Jones as the RB1 and gives him important practice reps I'll have to drop Charles down my draft board. Drafting now, I'd have to rank Charles as a high RB2 instead of a low RB1. It's still early though, and Haley's M.O. is to list a player as a backup and put him in as a starter just before the first game of the regular season, if he responds. Thomas Jones could be the guy in the red zone and that will limit Charles for this year. Stay tuned!
The Ravens opened their 2010 preseason schedule against the Panthers Thursday night, and QB Joe Flacco looked sharp completing eight passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. The scoring strike was a 30-yard completion to WR Mark Clayton in the right corner of the end zone.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Flacco looked in complete command of that offense last night, and the Ravens offense as a whole looks primed for a big season. For the record, he looked Anquaan Boldin's way several times, but only connected once for 12 yards. Overall, Flacco is starting to solidify himself as a QB1 for me, even in smaller leagues.
Tavaner: Flacco has the look and now the weapons of an up and coming fantasy QB. He is another QB available in the 6th round or later that lets you build depth before spending a pick on a QB. As with all mid round QBs be sure you grab a solid back up.
RB Michael Bush racked up 31 yards on seven carries and added one reception for eight yards during the Raiders preseason opener against the Cowboys Thursday night. RB Darren McFadden was nursing a hamstring injury and did not play.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I'm not going to say Michael Bush closed the door on Darren McFadden for the starting role after this performance, but he certainly has a leg up. To me, Bush is just a better choice as an every down, between the tackles runner and should win this job if he can continue to progress over the remainder of the preseason. McFadden will have a role too, but I envision him more as a third-down back with his receiving skills and speed in open space. Health is an issue for both of these guys, but Bush is moving on up my draft board in to the RB3 range, while McFadden has started to slip into a borderline RB4/RB5.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman caught six passes for 90 yards and returned two punts for 41 yards to open the preseason against the Saints Thursday night.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Edelman had a great night and picked up where he left off last season in place of the injured Wes Welker. I don't think it is a stretch to say this offense won't miss a beat with him in the lineup, and it might not be a bad strategy to go after Welker in your fantasy draft and then add Edelman later as insurance. Seems strange suggesting a handcuff to a WR, but I think it applies in this case.
Tavaner: Edelman is making a case to be on the field, with or without Welker. He's been running plays with the RBs in practice, and the possibility of him catching a swing pass out of the backfield or going in motion from there are increasing in probability. He has value in PPR leagues and more value in leagues that give return yards. He played in 11 games last year and started 7 but he is sure to see a significant increase from the 389 snaps he participated in last year. As X says, he's a handcuff for Welker at the moment but keep an eye out on the next few pre-season games to see how he is use. A converted QB, he is still learning the position.
Various outlets are reporting that the Patriots gave the starting nod to RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis in their preseason opener Thursday night against the Saints. Green-Ellis finished up the first half with 11 carries, 34 yards and a TD. Laurence Maroney scored two touchdowns on eight carries.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: As X writes below, stay far away from this backfield in 2010. Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris didn't touch the ball on Thursday night, which was odd. Also keep in mind that Kevin Faulk is still going to be in the mix on third downs this upcoming season. You'd have to scoop up 2-3 of these guys to ensure consistent weekly production. This backfield is not worth the trouble in 2010.
X: While it isn't a good idea to overreact to this start, it is just another reason to stay away from this backfield in 2010.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Rams RB Steven Jackson has declared himself fully recovered from the back surgery he had in April. "The back is fully healed. The football, the hitting ... I'm not worried about it. I'll be ready to go." Even so, the Rams are not expected to play Jackson against the Vikings this weekend, but they have increased his workload so he can get himself ready for the regular season. "I've ramped up my reps, so we're going in the right direction. We're progressively going uphill, to be able to make sure I peak at the right time in my training and get ready for the opener. I think everything is going good; everything is going right to schedule."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This is great news, but the fact that he is missing preseason action is not surprising. I'd be surprised if we see him for more than a series or two in total until the real games start. His current ADP has him ranked at the bottom of round one, right around pick 9, which is just about where I would put him. There could be some upside with his value if the Rams can even modestly pull it together offensively behind rookie Sam Bradford.
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, free agent RB Brian Westbrook could be signed on with a team by Monday. Mortensen mentions three teams specifically, the Broncos, Rams and Redskins, but also leaves the door open for a surprise team.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It is hard to speculate which team may sign him, but in the end Westbrook holds little fantasy value. The only real chance he has to make an impact is to latch on to a team with an injury, otherwise he will play backup to whomever the established starter is.
According to AZCentral.com, RB Tim Hightower remains the no. 1 running back for the Cardinals in front of Chris Wells, who many believe should be the Cardinals top back. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt still believes Hightower is deserving of the label, because he does everything asked of him, and does it well. "Tim is versatile, he's tough, and he runs well with the ball," Whisenhunt said. "And we have a lot more information about Tim in different situations than we do with Beanie." He added that for his part, Wells is doing well but "needs to earn it" to move ahead of Hightower.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Whisenhunt has proven over his tenure with the Cardinals that he is unwilling to simply hand over a starting role simply because of someone's name or what round they were drafted. It happened with Matt Leinart and it is happening again here with Chris Wells. I think the media and fans have the idea that Wells has been demoted in some sense or that he is underperforming when that simply is not the case. Wells is a second year player who still has yet to be a complete football player in this system. There is no doubt he will get there, it just hasn't happened yet. In the meantime, Wells should still be considered a solid RB2 in all formats.
According to reports, Saints RB Lynell Hamilton did in fact suffer a torn ACL in his right knee. This was confirmed by the MRI results. The injury occurred during the morning's practice.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Lynell Hamilton is obviously out for the year. Unless the Saints bring in another runner, Pierre Thomas has only P.J. Hill to share carries with. Reggie Bush will get his usual 80-100 carries, but that's nothing. Bush does his damage in the receiving department, and he should get about 50 or so receptions by season's end. Reggie's presence actually helps Thomas, as defenses can't focus on the between-the-tackles running when Bush is on the field running routes. Thomas has breakout written all over him this season. He could end up being one of the most undervalued RB2s in 2010.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the early prognosis on the Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson is that he could be back in 4-8 weeks from his right pectoral injury, but he'll get a second opinion from his New York surgeon.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: This is the latest on Jackson. If he makes it back at all, it'll be closer to the October date than the September one. I'd expect to see Eric Barton fill in at the ILB spot but leave Barton on the wire until there is a more definitive answer. Draft Jackson as a LB4 if you start two or grab him as an LB3 and cover him immediately. Once he's back, Jackson should be good for LB1 numbers.
According to Jaguars.com, WR Mike Thomas has been impressive in camp thus far and caught the attention of his peers, but more importantly his coach, Jack Del Rio. “Mike’s been making big plays. Mike’s determined to take a step forward. He’s an explosive player. He’s fighting for that [number 2] role right now." QB David Garrard has been equally impressed, saying, “We continue to talk about ‘Mike T’ because he continues to make plays. I told him if you continue to make plays I’m going to continue to throw the ball to you. Hopefully, his confidence will continue to grow so we can solidify that number two spot.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: A second year receiver, Thomas could very well be available in upcoming dynasty drafts, so don't fall asleep on him. In seasonal leagues, Thomas is a late round flyer that could emerge into a solid reserve as the season moves on.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo is looking to give rookie QB Sam Bradford a good amount of work with the first team offense in their preseason opener Saturday night, although veteran A.J. Feeley will still get the start. "I’m not sure how long into that first half he’ll go. We’ll just kind of play it by ear."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Bradford has had a terrific offseason and training camp, and looks like he take over the reigns of that offense sooner than later. He is not a QB seasonal owners should look to roster, as that offense on the whole is not all that good. Dynasty owners should consider him toward the end of the first round of their rookie drafts, as he looks like a future star.
According to Adam Schefter, Saints RB Lynell Hamilton has suffered what the team believes is a season-ending ACL tear. No official word will come from the team until further tests are performed.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This is significant news more for what it means for Pierre Thomas than Hamilton. If Hamilton is indeed out for the year, Thomas could see his reps increased at the goal line, although there is still time for the Saints to add another big body for that role. Keep an eye on this situation to see how it develops.
During an ESPN interview with Adam Schefter, Titans RB Chris Johnson reaffirmed that he plans to run for 2,500 yards in 2010.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Chris Johnson racked up 2,509 yards from scrimmage last season, which is the most in NFL history, so it's hard to imagine CJ2K having an even bigger season in 2010. Of that yardage total, 2,006 were on the ground. Johnson is one of only six players to ever rush for over 2,000 yards. The bad news is that most of those players couldn't come close to duplicating those stats the following season. Only Barry Sanders came close, rushing for 1,491 yards back in 1998, the season after he topped the 2,000-yard mark. Is it impossible for Johnson to hit the 2,000-yard mark again? Impossible? No. Unlikely? Yes. I think 2,500 rushing yards is out of the question, but Johnson has youth on his side, so 2,000 rushing yards is certainly not impossible. If forced to forecast, I predict Johnson racks up 2,200-2,300 total yards, 50 receptions and 14-15 total scores in 2010. I think only Ray Rice outperforms CJ2K in 2010. Yes, you read that right... I predict that Rice outperforms Johnson this upcoming season. Crazy? That's what people called us last August, when we predicted a top 5-10RB season out of Rice. How did that work out?
According to ESPN.com, the Broncos expect RB Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) to be ready for the season opener. Despite this, Denver signed RB Justin Fargas on Tuesday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: The Broncos, who recently signed LenDale White, may have some quiet concerns about Knowshon Moreno's hamstring. I'm not suggesting that the 30-year-old Justin Fargas will even make the 53-man roster, or that LenDale will amount to much at all in 2010, but one has to wonder why that Broncos' coaching staff has been so focused on the team's running back depth as of late. Whether or not all of this has any relation to Moreno's projected availability for opening day remains to be seen. Stay tuned.
According to Jeff Darlington, on Twitter, D'Qwell's pectoral is not torn. Might not be that serious. He's waiting on a MRI to determine extent.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: Conflicting reports about injuries are not uncommon. The prior report came from a Brown's beat writer, Darlington covers the Dolphins. As I said in the first post, we'll keep you updated.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, who has been making a valiant comeback this season from a torn pectoral muscle, suffered an injury to the other pectoral Tuesday night in practice. Jackson underwent an MRI Tuesday night. It could be anything from a strained to a season-ending tear that could require more surgery.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: This is a tough injury for Jackson, the Browns, and fantasy owners counting on another 100 tackle season. Jackson failed to get the long term deal in the off-season and was poised for a top ten finish in IDP leagues this year. It's too early to tell the extent of the injury, but his reaction on the field says a lot. We'll keep you posted.
According to the Star Tribune, Vikings rookie RB Toby Gerhart is running third on the depth chart behind Adrian Peterson and Albert Young.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Gerhart still has some work to do to move ahead of Albert Young, who has the advantage of having played in this system last season. Gerhart will move ahead of Young in due time, but neither have much fantasy value sitting behind Adrian Peterson, and at this point I would find it hard suggesting either one as a handcuff to him unless you play in a league with very deep rosters. Dynasty owners should look at Gerhart somewhere in the second round of their rookie drafts, with a slight bump up if you own Peterson.
According to Lindsay Jones on Twitter, Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels confirmed that X-rays on the foot of WR Demaryius Thomas were negative. There is currently no timetable for the Thomas' return.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The Broncos have been piling up the injuries of late, but get some good news here. Thomas remains one of my favorite rookies this year, inside my top 5 overall and second only to Dez Bryant at the wide receiver position.
According to the Kansas City Star, in advance of Friday's preseason opener in Atlanta, Thomas Jones tops the Chiefs depth chart at running back. For the most part it follows the way they've lined up at training camp.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: Jamaal Charles is still my choice to produce 1400 total yards with 8+TDs. This is HC Todd Haley's "M.O.". Owners of Charles shouldn't be too concerned as there are a lot of factors weighing in against Thomas Jones holding onto that designation. The foremost is Charles' talent. Additionally, the Chiefs are unlikely to be ahead in games or in a position to run out the clock at the end of them. The offensive line is not a team strength and Jones is 32 coming off his career high in carries. It matters not who starts the first exhibition game.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, further examination of Cardinals RB Chris Wells revealed no significant injuries and the team designated his return to practice day-to-day.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Initial reports were positive, but it is nice to hear official confirmation from the team. Wells remains a solid RB2 in all formats.
According to the Boston Herald, RB Fred Taylor was running with the first team in practice today in camp, while 5th year pro Laurence Maroney was running with the third team.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: There is no other way to say this: stay away from this backfield in 2010… far away. If you are going to take a shot on anyone, it should be Maroney, but there is no real reason I can give you other than Fred Taylor is 34 and Sammy Morris is 33. If you must draft him, do it as an RB5 at most, and keep your fingers crossed.
According to the Cardinals website, RB Chris Wells took a hard hit from safety Hamza Abdullah during a running drill in practice, and doubled over in pain for "a minute or two" afterward. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, albeit "gingerly", but was then carted off for further examination.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The author of the article doesn't seem too concerned, although he thinks Wells may miss some time in camp. We'll post additional details on the injury (and any potential missed time) as they come in.
According to the Seattle Times, WR Deon Butler continues to impress the coaching staff with his speed and acrobatic catches. Head coach Pete Carroll was effusive in his praise, labeling Butler "most improved" after watching the progress he has made throughout the offseason. "He's just made a lot of progress. He made another big play today. He's got terrific speed, but to make tough catches like that with guys going up, that's the stuff you like to see."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Butler remains a favorite young WR of mine, and he seems to be coming along nicely in Carroll's system. If he continues down this path, he will make a nice late round grab that could pay dividends.
According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, WR Percy Harvin has missed his 14th consecutive practice of the preseason. Harvin initially left the team to deal with the loss of his Grandmother, but now it's been reported he's dealing with another bout of migraines.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Murph: This isn't the best news to be coming out for people high on Harvin. I think we'll be hearing about him dealing with migraines for his entire career, but to miss an entire week this early in camp could definitely affect the way he starts the season. Right now I have him as a WR3, but had hopes he could move up the ladder into WR2 territory. With the way his training camp has started, that may be difficult.
According to depth charts published on the Redskins website, veteran RB Willie Parker is now the fourth option at running back, behind Ryan Torain, Larry Johnson and Clinton Portis.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It is hard to envision Parker making the team unless someone else gets injured, so my advice is to move on if you own him. At this point, Portis appears to have a good hold on the starting spot, with Johnson his backup. Neither has great fantasy value and both come with risk no matter where you draft them. Portis is an RB3 at best, but I'd be more comfortable with him on my bench, and LJ a RB5/6 type depth player. It goes without saying that neither have much dynasty value left.
During the Bengals-Cowboys Hall Of Fame Game on Sunday night, Bengals WR Terrell Owens pulled in two passes for 18 yards against the Cowboys. Carson Palmer went 2-of-5 for 18 yards, and four of his five passes were intended for Owens. And if you count a Palmer-to-Owens reception that was called back, Palmer threw the football in the air six times, five of which were intended for Owens. Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco didn't catch a pass in Sunday night's game, and RB Cedric Benson ran the ball just twice for seven yards. On the Cowboys side, QB Tony Romo went 5-for-10 for 59 yards, RB Marion Barber ran the ball twice for seven yards, WR Miles Austin pulled in one reception for 21 yards and WR Roy Williams grabbed a pass for 21 yards.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: It's never a good idea to come to any conclusions during preseason outings, especially the early August games, but Terrell Owens could have a very special season in Cincy this year. This is exactly why we grabbed him as our WR3 in a recent fantasy football expert draft (read that article!). Owens probably won't pull in 90 passes this season with Chad Ochocinco commanding targets opposite him, but it isn't crazy to think that Owens has one great year left, one where he can grab 10 scores and roughly 1,000 yards. He is in better shape than almost any 36-year-old to ever play the game. Don't grab him as a fantasy WR2 in your upcoming 2010 drafts, but don't hesitate to make him your fantasy WR3 (while hoping for those WR2-type stats).
According to reports, Falcons WR Michael Jenkins is out for 4-6 weeks with a shoulder injury. Jenkins suffered the injury on Friday night during a scrimmage.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: While this isn't great news for Matt Ryan owners, I don't think this injury will slow the passer down at all in 2010. And keep in mind, Jenkins will be back, he might just miss the first couple weeks or so. Ryan is one of my favorite low-end fantasy starters this upcoming season. He is very underrated right now across all formats and he will make a fine fantasy low-end QB1 in 2010. Roddy White is an underrated fantasy WR1 this year, Harry Douglas is set to bounce-back coming off his 2009 ACL injury, and Tony Gonzalez still has what it takes to be a top 3-4 fantasy tight end... Ryan will have no problem finding people to pass to as he takes his game to the next level in 2010.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Giants are hoping to get back to being a running team and in the process are hoping to use QB Eli Manning a whole lot less, in spite of the fact that 2009 was his best statistical season. Leading that rushing attack will be bruiser Brandon Jacobs and the fully healed Ahmad Bradshaw, who likes the idea that the Giants will get back to their roots. "Coaches said we're going to get back to running the ball this year, and the backs are really excited about it. The running game will be good."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: A couple of point here from a fantasy perspective. First, don't let this story steer you away from any of the Giant receivers come draft day. All the makings are there for both Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks to put up solid numbers in this offense as borderline WR1 types. That in itself means that Eli Manning should be able to put up good numbers in this offense. Is he a QB1? In larger leagues, I think he'll be fine as a QB1, although you'll want to pair him with another borderline guy to ensure you can maximize the points at that position by playing the matchups. Lastly, look for a pretty even split in reps between Bradshaw and Jacobs this season. Neither are more than an RB3 for me because of this split, although I think Bradshaw has the better chance to outperform that ranking.
According to SI.com, the Seahawks are in search of a runner who can compliment their stable of smaller, quicker type backs. RB Justin Forsett is the standout amoung the that group, but head coach Pete Carroll will look to add a bruiser type before the season opens. "I've always like complementary backs, different style guys. We love the physical nature of the running game, so it's nice to have that type of big back."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Before his release in the spring, LenDale White was the guy Carroll had pegged for that role, so whether he can find a better fit than Quinton Ganther remains to be seen. Forsett remains in the driver's seat for the starting role and should provide fantasy owners with solid RB3 numbers with plenty of upside for more.
According to reports, Broncos rookie WR Demaryius Thomas injured his left foot on Saturday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Demaryius Thomas' fractured foot is still healing, and this is reportedly the same foot, so there is reason to be concerned. We should know more later today when tests results come back. Hopefully Thomas didn't aggravate his healing foot. The rookie did walk to the locker room under his own power, so there is a reason to be optimistic at this point. Keep checking back with us throughout the day.
According to Don Banks of SI.com, QB Sam Bradford looked so sharp in camp on Friday that he believes the rookie could win the competition with veteran QB AJ Feeley by late August. Feeley himself gets the same feeling after seeing him practice and improve throughout the offseason. "Every day he sees the field more and more, and you can see it coming. He's starting to get it. You can just tell. Today he just had his best day of practice since he's been here."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Dynasty owners take notice because it sounds like Bradford is the real deal. If he isn't already, Bradford should be a top 10 rookie on your draft board, higher if you find yourself in need at QB. I'm not suggesting Bradford as a viable fantasy starter this season, because the Rams offense is not all that good, but he is looking like a future stud in the making even if it will take a few years to get there.
According to ESPN.com, the Cowboys' coaching staff plans to use TE Jason Witten more in "goal-to-go" situations in 2010.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Jason Witten was doing too much blocking in goal line situations last year, so it's nice to hear that the Cowboys' coaching staff wants the tight end catching more touchdown passes in 2010. Despite pulling in just two touchdowns last year, Witten had a strong 2009 campaign. He grabbed 94 balls for 1,030 yards. The stud tight end has had at least 81 catches in each of his last three NFL seasons, so more goal line targets should have Witten back to producing top 3-4 fantasy tight end numbers in 2010. Tony Romo has top 3-4 fantasy quarterback upside in 2010. With weapons like Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Felix Jones and Jason Witten, how could Romo not explode in 2010? Equally as important of a question, with all those weapons on that Cowboys' roster, how will opposing defenses double Miles Austin in 2010? That rhetorical question just put a smile on the faces of Miles Austin owners.
According to Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston, WR Brandon Tate is the "top candidate" to be on the field in three receiver sets with Randy Moss and Wes Welker. Reiss also believes Tate will be a factor on special teams, as he looks to be the team's primary kickoff returner.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The Patriots passing game is potent, so dynasty owners should keep an eye on Tate, as he could certainly be worth rostering if he continues to impress in camp.
According to ESPN, veteran WR Donald Driver has signed a two-year extension to remain with Green Bay through the 2012 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This a curious extension considering Driver is 35 and Green Bay has some younger prospects in Jordy Nelson and James Jones on the roster. At this point, Driver is worth drafting for value in the 7th or 8th rounds, but I wouldn't go any higher considering his age and recent history of knee problems.
According to Mike Garafolo of the New Jersey Star-Ledger, RB Ahmad Bradshaw has received all of the work with the first team offense to this point in camp, and has "looked like his rookie self".
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Sounds like Bradshaw is completely over his injuries, and that is good news for his owners. The fact that he is getting all the first team reps right now does not necessarily mean he will be starting week one, but it does sound like we are looking at more of a committee in this backfield than past years. Brandon Jacobs will still be a big part of this rushing attack, but it sounds like he could have his role reduced by the coaches to keep him healthy the entire season. Neither Jacobs or Bradshaw are more than an RB3 for me right now, with Bradshaw getting a slight bump in PPR.
Tavaner: Don't shy away from Bradshaw as your RB3. The Giants could have a top ten offense this year. Last year they not only threw for over 4000 yards but they also ran for over 1800 with an almost even split between the two. Bradshaw should see an increase from his 30 targets last year and in this, his fourth year, he is on the brink of making a big move in fantasy. He averaged almost 10 ypc last year and with a modest increase in touches - like 3 or so a game - he'll move into RB2 consideration this year.
According to ESPN, rookie RB CJ Spiller has finally signed his contract with the Bills, a reported 5 year, $25 million deal. Spiller was Buffalo's first round pick, no. 9 overall, in April's draft.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Good to hear Spiller will finally be in camp. Look for the rookie to establish his role in this offense outside of the Marshawn Lynch/Fred Jackson battle. The Bills will likely use in him a variety of roles on offense, similar to what Reggie Bush does in New Orleans. His upside makes him RB3 material in seasonal leagues, approaching RB2 in PPR. In dynasty formats, Spiller is a top 3-5 pick in all formats.
According to BaltimoreSun.com, Ravens RB Ray Rice is currently benching 405 pounds and he can squat over 500. "Look at him over there," Ravens fullback Le'Ron McClain said after a recent practice. "He lives in the weight room all the time. I mean all the time! He is going to be a beast."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Many national publications have Ray Rice pegged as an early favorite to win 2010 Offensive Player of the Year in the AFC. The 5-foot-9, 212-pound stud is set to explode this upcoming season, and I honestly won't be surprised at all if Rice finishes as the top scoring fantasy running back at season's end. So, if you own the 1.01 draft slot this season, should you grab Ray Rice? Well, not exactly, and I explain all of this, and more, in Rice's most recent Player Spotlight. Rice was our biggest breakout candidate last season, and for those of you who listened, via our Player Spotlights, and grabbed the stud in 2009, congrats! Again, read Rice's recent Player Spotlight if you own those 1.01 or 1.02 draft slots this upcoming fantasy season.
X: Rice is absolutely in the discussion for the number 1 overall pick - I outlined the reasons why in my recent article. And while I agree with Smitty you can probably land him at #3 or #4, moving down will be a hard sell this season because the top 4 are so close in value.
Tavaner: Ray Rice is in for a very big year! Scoring doesn't matter because of the way Rice is used. Cam Cameron's offense is going to be very difficult to scheme against because of the addition of Anquan Boldin. Remember LaDanian Tomlinson's gravy years? They occurred under Cameron. I see a similar storm brewing in the AFC North this year, with a better defense.
According to Startribune.com's Vikings Access, there is a 99.9 percent chance that QB Brett Favre will be with the Vikings for the 2010 season opener.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is kind of a bold prediction given that Brett Favre himself probably doesn't even know if he will return in 2010. Expect this situation to just get more cloudy as we head through the beginning of August. As we keep suggesting, a Favre retirement would crush the fantasy values of Sidney Rice and Visanthe Shiancoe. With Favre, Rice is a very strong fantasy WR2 in 2010. Without Favre under center this season, Rice might only produce fantasy WR3-type numbers. We are torn here at FFX as to what a Favre retirement would do to the production of Adrian Peterson. An argument can be made that AP gets more touches if Favre retires. While this is true, will he see more eight-man fronts? Expect more on this in the coming days, if not hours... If not minutes.
Tavaner: How confident am I that Favre will return this year? I drafted him in a 16 team league as my #1QB. Favre feeds off of drama, he enjoys the spotlight. A rematch with New Orleans to open the NFL season is just what the doctor ordered for whatever ails him. What will be stunning is when he really does retire, but I don't believe for a second it will be this year.
According to Peter King of SI.com, second year WR Sammie Stroughter is the "likely" starter alongside rookie Mike Williams when the Buccaneers open their season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: It's no secret that Mike Williams is one of my biggest late-round dynasty sleepers entering fresh 2010 dynasty fantasy football drafts. I honestly feel that this kid could be an elite talent in time. It's tough to say how productive, and consistent, he will be during his rookie campaign, but I think Williams will give us flashes of brilliance in 2010. He could very well be a strong fantasy WR2 by next season.
X: With all of the youth at wide receiver for the Bucs, it is still too early to tell who may be that second starter, because rookie Arrelious Benn is also in the running. One thing is clear, Mike Williams is locked in as a starter and should have a good season if what we have heard and seen so far are any indication. Dynasty owners should be looking to grab Williams in the 6-8 range if they want to land him, seasonal owners should consider him a borderline WR3.
Tavaner: Stroughter remains waiver wire material even if he does start and even if he has a big game or two to begin the season. He moves from a high end WR5 to a low end WR4 with this announcement. Tampa is still an offensively challenged team until Josh Freeman matures and he gets more weapons.
Updating an earlier post, the Houston Chronicle confirms that the Texans have announced a contract extension of WR Andre Johnson that makes him the league's highest paid wide receiver. His new contract totals $73.5 million over 7 years at an average of $10.5 million per year.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Johnson clearly deserves to be the highest paid receiver in the land after what he has accomplished so far in his career, and he is easily the best fantasy receiver in the land right now, regardless of format. AJ is worthy of consideration as high as the #5 overall pick if you play in PPR.
According to Adam Schefter, the Broncos suffered a blow to their defense when it was learned that linebacker Elvis Dumervil suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Wednesday's practice. Initial reports are suggesting he will be out a minimum of four months.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The Broncos defense took a major hit with this news, but from a fantasy perspective it is not quite as devastating. Dumervil is considered a LB3 at best, so it should not be too difficult a task to replace him.
Tavaner: Dumervil comes off your board in redrafts and, in dynasty, he should only be on it if you play in a big play league.
During a segment of NFL Live on the NFL Network, Jason La Canfora suggested that "it is looking much more like four games than six" when discussing the possible suspension for QB Ben Roethlisberger. La Canfora came to this conclusion after the Steelers QB met with Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday and according to La Canfora, the Commissioner spoke "glowingly" about Roethlisberger after the meeting. He also added that we won't know for sure what the suspension will be until closer to the start of the season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Good news for Roethy owners, sort of. Minimum is still looking like four weeks, so if you own Big Ben, you'll need to fill in the gap with a decent backup and hope your team doesn't suffer too much. Much of this will also depend on what Ben does over the next four weeks... another transgression of any sort will push this suspension back up into the six game range. In his absence, Byron Leftwich should be the starter, and that means you'll see a heavy dose of Rashard Mendenhall.
Tavaner: Good news for Steeler and fantasy fans but I lose respect for Goodell. This amounts to a nod and a wink for the white guy.
According to a Tweet by Mike Jurecki, Wells scored a touchdown in practice working with the second team offense.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Wells is entrenched as the starting tailback, but he'll need to get the upper hand on the goal-line before fantasy owners look at him as anything more than a middle tier RB2. Looks like Tim Hightower will work in that role until further notice.
Tavaner: No one can argue Chris Wells' talent but the burden of proof is still on Wells to show he can take NFL pounding for a year and stay healthy. Limiting his goal line touches will make a huge difference for the team, giving them two options at RB. Savvy owners will also notice that LaRod Stephens-Howling is getting an expanded package of third down plays this year. Stephens-Howling is still waiver wire material in fantasy, but on the field these options help the Cardinals develop a better offense.
According to JSOnline.com, Packers TE Jermichael Finley, who was regularly spread out wide in 2009, is expected to block a bit more in 2010. Finley prefers a two-point stance over the three-point in-line stance, but that Packers' coaching staff reportedly wants Finley in-line more often in 2010.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Aaron Rodgers believes, and I agree, that a better-blocking Jermichael Finley could lead to even more productive numbers in 2010. "I think most of the stuff we did with him was out of a three-point stance," quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. "We have plenty of plays when he's in-line and he has a Z (flanker) outside of him, and we can run combination routes and different things. There's definitely more that we can do with him and will do with him as he becomes a better blocker, which he has. We'll see more options off him." Jermichael Finley is one of my biggest breakout candidates heading into 2010. I have the 6-5, 247-pound tight end pegged for 1,000+ yards and 10TDs this upcoming season. Chew on that. If you want to read more on this stud's upcoming breakout campaign, read our Jermichael Finley Player Spotlights.
According to Rotoworld, the Vikings have revised their contract offer to QB Brett Favre. The offer could reportedly pay Favre as much as $20 million in 2010 ($16 million in salary and $4 million via incentives).
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Brett Favre reportedly claims that he did not recently send "retirement" text messages to anyone with the Vikings. Favre's agent also insists that money is not the driving force behind his client's possible return. "It's definitely not about the money," said agent Bus Cook. "If they want to reward him, nobody's going to walk away from that. But it's not a factor in his decision." We will certainly keep you posted as the information comes rolling in, as Favre's decision impacts so many fantasy athletes. Stay tuned.
According to USAToday.com, the Broncos have released RB Kolby Smith and have signed RB LenDale White.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: LenDale White might not even make the final roster, but waiving Kolby Smith for him raises some eyebrows… Does this move suggest something about the severity of Knowshon Moreno's hamstring injury? It has us concerned a bit, that's for sure. According to recent reports, Moreno is not expected to be back until after the Broncos' second preseason game on August, 21. Stay tuned, but for now, don't over react regarding Moreno's possible correlation to this roster move… this is likely just a camp-related move to get another runner on the practice field, as both Correll Buckhalter and Moreno are currently banged up.
According to ESPN.com, Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew calls Texans RB Arian Foster "a force to be reckoned with" entering 2010. Jones-Drew said this to Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This blog posting on ESPN talks about Maurice Jones-Drew's new and upcoming fantasy football radio show on Sirius. Arian Foster is clearly one of MJD's sleepers heading into 2010; He is also one of our sleepers. I like rookie Ben Tate, he is a talented runner, but I have liked Foster since last season and I firmly believe that he can crank out fantasy RB2-type numbers if given the touches (and if he stays healthy). I have to admit, I like MJD's thinking here, but I'd much rather see him focused on football and maintaining his own fantasy value. Hopefully his Friday night radio shows aren't a distraction.
Tavaner: Foster may, or may not, be a fantasy force but for MJD to have a fantasy football radio show during the season will take just enough energy for me to move him to the overall #4 spot in redrafts. From what I see Foster is in an RBBC for now and is a risky RB3 with upside.
According to NFL.com, Bills management is starting to grow impatient about contract negotiations with their first round pick, RB CJ Spiller. He remains one of only two unsigned first round picks and has already missed eight training camp practices. And even though he had a productive offseason, head coach Chan Gailey is disappointed that the rookie's growth may be stunted if he doesn't get into camp soon. "It hurts. He did a great job in minicamps. But being here now is a different game. And it doesn't help anybody. It doesn't help him. It doesn't help us. We hope it gets resolved as soon as it possibly can."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It is still early, but it cannot be overstated how important that first training camp is for a rookie player. That aside, I like Spiller's chances from a fantasy perspective. While many see this backfield a three headed monster, I feel like Spiller's role may be similar to what Reggie Bush does in New Orleans, and he'll get his touches in certain packages regardless of what happens in the battle between Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch. I don't really envision the three of them splitting reps, it will be more like Jackson and Lynch splitting reps and Spiller playing his own role in that offense. Can he eventually be the full time starter? Sure, but in the meantime I don't envision him as a backup to anyone in the traditional sense. His value in dynasty leagues is somewhere in the top 5 picks, seasonal owners probably shouldn't count on him as more than a RB3.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews has been putting in extra time after practices to catch 50 or so passes from a JUGS machine. Mathews claims he will continue to do this every day after practice until the Chargers first exhibition game.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Good to hear Mathews is working on that aspect of his game, but it will probably take some time to get comfortable with it, especially having rarely done it in college. Although I think he will have a good season, don't factor receptions into your ranking for Mathews - the Chargers are a lot more likely to use Darren Sproles in a pass-catching role.
According to a Tweet by Pat Hanlon, Giants WR Hakeem Nicks underwent multiple MRI exams on his knee and all came back negative. Hicks is expected to be back at practice as soon as Thursday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It was assumed Nicks was fine, but it's nice to get confirmation from an MRI. With Nicks coming back as early as tomorrow, there should be no worries from a fantasy perspective.
According to a Tweet by Keli Fulton, Saints head coach Sean Payton has confirmed X-rays on RB Pierre Thomas' wrist were negative and he should be back at practice in a few days.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Good news for Thomas owners, although the repeated injuries to that wrist have to be a little worrying for his owners. He remains an RB2 on my list, but not quite as high as some have him ranked.
According to numerous reports, Vikings QB Brett Favre has yet to decide whether or not he will play in 2010.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: There are all kinds of assumptions being made right now. For starters, there is a report floating around news wires right now suggesting that the Vikings have offered Brett Favre a $3 million raise to return in 2010. Another report suggests that Favre plans to consult with Dr. James Andrews regarding his surgically repaired ankle. Even Visanthe Shiancoe is making the news, as he had this to say on the matter: "What I'm hearing is it is true, he did decide to retire. Until I hear it from his mouth, I'm going to leave it at that." Clearly this thing isn't over. It wouldn't be over even if it was over. Not knowing is the worst part for fantasy owners trying to prepare for their 2010 fantasy drafts. Sidney Rice owners better hope Favre returns, that's for sure. As for Adrian Peterson, we're torn here at FFX as to how a Favre retirement would impact the stud rusher in 2010. So, sit back, relax, and watch our rankings and projections bounce all over the place as we observe, report and react. We will keep you posted.
X: Groundhog day... same story, different year. Favre definitely sent text messages to a bunch of players that he was retiring, there is no questioning that, and then turns around hours later and sends his minions to deliver the message that he is probably not retiring... maybe, kinda sorta. This is about money. It always comes back to money. There is no other reasonable explanation for any of this. He'll get his $16 million to play for the Vikes this year and his ankle will have miraculously healed - count on it.
According to MiamiHerald.com, Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown claims that his 2009 season-ending foot injury is "a non-issue" entering 2010. Brown even went on to say that his knee "feels great."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Ronnie Brown, who will be 29 in December, has suffered two season-ending injuries over the last three NFL seasons. Usually an injury history like that, paired with age, ends up being a recipe for disappointment, but Brown is falling into the late sixth-round in many early 2010 drafts. There isn't a ton of risk grabbing Brown that late, but let someone else roll the dice any earlier than that. There are far too many other solid players to grab in that fifth-round this upcoming season, like Jermichael Finley.
According to reports, Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin may have suffered "a hyperextended left knee" during practice on Tuesday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: According to several reports, there is "very strong optimism" at Eagles camp, but we will have to wait for MRI results to determine the severity of the injury. Jeremy Maclin, who suffered an ACL injury back in college, could have a nice season if he enters Week 1 fully healed. Stay tuned.
According to reports, Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck "remains the clear No. 1 option" in Seattle this upcoming season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Charlie Whitehurst has reportedly done very little to suggest that he will unseat Matt Hasselbeck this upcoming season. Don't get me wrong, Whitehurst is still worth owning in larger dynasty leagues, but he is more of a low-risk dynasty project than anything else.
According to NYDailyNews.com, Giants WR Hakeem Nicks went down with a right knee injury during Giants practice on Tuesday and will undergo an MRI.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Hakeem Nicks was able to stand after the injury, but was carted to the locker room. We will keep you posted, but for now the injury is being called a hyperextended knee. The test results should be in Wednesday, but Nicks reportedly said later in the day that he "feels okay." Early signs point to Nicks not being severely injured, but stay tuned.
According to Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, QB Brett Favre began informing the Vikings that he will not return for the 2010 season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Murph: This news is certainly subject to change as the next month progresses, but as of right now it looks like Favre is going to retire. If he does go through with it the fantasy implications are huge. WRs Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice immediately take a hit as no one the Vikings plug in at quarterback will be able to match Favre's production. The running back situation changes much less however. Adrian Peterson actually had 49 fewer carries in 2009 with Favre than 2008 without him. With Tavaris Jackson most likely to take over, I see the Vikings giving a lot of those carries back. There will be no shortage of stories on this in the coming weeks, so keep a close eye out as your draft dates approach.
According to Don Banks of SI.com, WR Sidney Rice consulted with multiple doctors in the offseason, and some suggested he get surgery on his troublesome hip, although they did not deem it completely necessary. Since then he has continued to have pain and now finds himself on the active/PUP to start Vikings camp. Rice claims he is just being cautious with the injury and wants to ensure he is ready when the season starts. "You want to be smart. Right now, it's just day-by-day and we're taking it slow. We don't want to rush anything."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Anyone else getting a bad feeling about this? It is still early, but Rice has now lived with this injury since the NFC Championship game in January, and by all accounts it has not gotten all that much better. Drafting Rice as your WR2 all of a sudden seems a bit risky, especially when you consider this injury could linger well into the season. The bulk of Rice's value will still be dictated by a Favre return, but this adds a layer of doubt for me. Certainly this is something to monitor closely as August turns into September, but right now I would be hesitant to have Rice as anything more than a WR3.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Lions head coach Scott Linehan wants to establish depth at the running back position, but is also looking to feature one back down the road. "Certainly you want to have a go-to guy, but you need to be able to have other guys and have good depth there to be an effective run team." Rookie RB Jahvid Best appears to be in line for the feature role, but nothing is set in stone according to the coach. "All I care about is the productivity and I want this backfield to be productive, no matter what. No matter who's getting the carries, no matter who's getting the bulk of anything."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If he isn't already, Jahvid Best should be climbing up your draft board, and if you play in a dynasty league he should be inside your top three. There have been nothing but positive reviews coming out of camp about the rookie and while Kevin Smith is still part of the equation, it is hard to see him truly challenging Best while trying to recover from knee surgery.
According to AZCardinals.com, Cardinals QB Matt Leinart is the clear starter heading into the 2010 NFL season. “Let’s be clear,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “My expectation is Matt is the guy.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: I don't have a ton of confidence in Matt Leinart, but hopefully the passer proves me wrong. Larry Fitzgerald should be a top five fantasy wide receiver no matter who is throwing him the football in 2010, but I fear Fitz will get less touchdown opportunities this season without Kurt Warner moving that team down the field. Again, Fitz is a top five fantasy lock at his position, but I currently have Calvin Johnson and Andre Johnson ahead of him… Brandon Marshall and Reggie Wayne could also outscore Fitzy at season's end. Top five is still stud-like, so I'm not calling the Arizona wide receiver a bust, but I just don't see Fitzgerald having top 1-2 fantasy wide receiver numbers this upcoming season.
According to the Bills website, RB Fred Jackson has received the majority of carries with the first team thus far in camp, with Marshawn Lynch "sprinkled in" here and there. Lynch seems to be fine with his role right now, saying, "I’m going to leave that to [the coaches] and just come out and give what I’ve got every day. Whether they get me on the field, whether they have me playing the same role, whether they have me doing more, I’m cool with that.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Not really a surprise when you consider how the 2009 season finished up. If you need a refresher, over the last 6 games Jackson got the bulk of the work out of the backfield, 109 carries to Lynch's 33. That is now continuing into the early preseason and training camp and at some point fantasy owners will have to decide how to slot these two on their draft boards. Tough call made tougher when you start thinking about how rookie CJ Spiller will affect the rotation. Overall, I think Jackson will very likely win the split with Lynch 70/30 or better initially, but he then needs to produce. If he becomes ineffective, the coaches may decide Lynch will get another shot and increase his workload. That is the kind of uncertainty I think surrounds this tandem. If you can stay away, do that, otherwise try to lock both of these guys up in your draft. Having just one or the other could prove messy as the season wears on.
According to the Kansas City Star, RB Jamaal Charles is listed on the Chiefs depth chart as backup to veteran Thomas Jones, who was signed in the offseason to provide depth at the position. Head coach Todd Haley even had Jones working with the first team offense over the weekend while Charles worked with the second stringers. When asked about it, Haley shrugged it off as part of coaching, “I’m not real interested in any of these guys being real comfortable."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: What Haley is doing here is nothing more than motivation for Charles to work harder and understand nothing will be handed to him for free. Charles understands that and there should be little doubt he will be starting for this team when the season opens. I've banged the drum for Charles before and I will continue to do that until I see evidence to the contrary. He is certainly RB1 material if you play in PPR, and sits right on the fence in standard scoring.
According to a story in the San Jose Mercury News, second year WR Michael Crabtree continues to have praised heaped upon him and looks primed for an offensive explosion in 2010. Crabtree is already ahead of last year's curve, mostly because he was locked in a contract dispute at the beginning of last season. In spite of that missed time last year – all of training camp and the first five games – he was able to catch 48 passes and that was good enough for fourth all time for the franchise, something head coach Mike Singletary is well aware of. "I think what he did last year showed a lot about the kind of talent he is, the kind of mindset that he has. The kid loves football. So what does he gain now? I think he gains a lot of confidence knowing that, 'I don't think I'm supposed to be here, I know I'm supposed to be in this position.'"
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Dynasty owners should be thrilled about the possibilities for Crabtree entering the 2010 season. The team has settled down around head coach Mike Singletary and the coaches are behind QB Alex Smith to lead this team into the future. Crabtree has had a year to learn and grow in this system, and with a full training camp added to that he should be able to easily outperform last year's stat line of 48/625/2. We may be talking about Crabtree as a WR1 by the time this season ends, but at the very least he will put up solid WR2 numbers.
According to PewterReport.com, rookie WR Mike Williams has continued his brilliant offseason into training camp and now sits atop the depth chart for Tampa Bay according to head coach Raheem Morris. "He will have an opportunity to prove himself in the preseason and final depth charts won't come out until we play Cleveland, but right now he is getting his reps with the ones and he is having a ball. And his teammates are having a ball with him."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It appears QB Josh Freeman has grown fond of Williams, and a good rapport between the two will go a long way toward the stats they put up when the real games start. Dynasty owners should be nudging Williams up their draft boards into the middle of the first round, and seasonal owners should move him up some as well. Not a ton because he is still a rookie, but he is well worth grabbing when you are looking for a WR4 with some upside.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Falcons RB Michael Turner could be more involved in the team's passing attack in 2010. "Michael just hasn't had the opportunity throughout his entire career to catch passes, but he does have good hands," Falcons coach Mike Smith said.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Michael Turner is a huge bounce-back candidate of mine entering 2010. And the report is right, he does have good hands. The runner is healthy and in shape, so I expect top 5-8 fantasy running back numbers out of "The Burner" in 2010. I predict a breakout season for Matt Ryan this upcoming year, which is going to make it tough for defenses to focus on that Falcons' rushing attack.
According to the Denver Post, the Broncos will be without the services of RB Knowshon Moreno for nearly a month while he recovers from a hamstring injury. MRI tests performed by the team revealed no significant tearing in the muscle.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Sounds like Moreno is going to be fine, although he will miss significant training camp time while recovering. Correll Buckhalter is also hurt and won't be back for a week, so the Broncos are already down to reserve players in camp. This is not a reason to move Moreno down your draft board, he should still be considered a solid RB2 in all formats.
According to the Boston Globe, Patriots WR Wes Welker was removed from the PUP list today. While Welker has passed his physical, he has not been cleared for contact. When the team began 11-on-11 work, Welker retreated to a different field to work on route running with training staff member Joe Van Allen using a bungee resistance band attached to Welker's back, which Van Allen released after his first few steps. The initial resistance is to help Welker regain his explosion off the line.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: This is an amazing recovery. Welker is gold in ppr leagues and this will allow him to build the connection necessary with QB Tom Brady during the pre-season. We'll keep you posted as news filters out but at this point Welker looks good to go for the start of the season.
According to reports, Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno was carted off the practice field on Sunday with what appears to be a serious leg injury. Some reports suggest that the injury is a hamstring injury, yet others point to a possible torn ACL. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has given no timetable for Moreno's return.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: We will certainly keep you posted, but this doesn't sound good. Either way, hamstring or ACL, Knowshon Moreno is out indefinitely, but a torn ACL would shut him down until next season.
According to Tennessean.com, Titans RB Chris Johnson, who is still not completely satisfied with his current contract, has set a goal to rush for 2,500 yards in 2010. “I am shooting for 2,500," Johnson said. “But I’ll be happy with anything over the record." Johnson is referring to Eric Dickerson’s single season record of 2,105 rushing yards. He also addressed whether or not he was satisfied with his contract. “I wouldn’t say satisfied, but what can I do?" Johnson said. “I am just here to play football."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is music to the ears of Chris Johnson dynasty owners. While 2,500 rushing yards is a lofty goal, and probably not attainable, you have to love Johnson's drive to succeed in 2010 despite his unsatisfied feelings regarding his contract. If healthy, Johnson could absolutely rush for 2,000+ yards this upcoming season. I wouldn't be shocked at all if he scored over 15 total touchdowns as well. While I love both Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson entering 2010, Johnson is my clear No. 1 overall ranked player across any league and scoring format.
Tavaner: This year Johnson is the easy choice as the #1 overall pick in redrafts. While I believe Vince Young is making strides, the Titans identity is running the ball, which I expect them to do early and often.
According to the Charlotte Observer, Panthers WR Steve Smith was catching passes from assistant trainer Mark Shermansky on Saturday, and doing so using his broken left arm.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Steve Smith (broken arm) should be fine by Week 1, but the receiver is always banged up these days. Is he a risky player to draft in 2010? Well, that depends on where you grab him, but his current ADP is in the 5th- to 6th-round range, where players like Felix Jones, Matt Forte, Chad Ochocinco and Ronnie Brown are getting drafted. That seems about right given the injury risk. The Panthers receiver getting the most buzz right now is rookie Brandon LaFell. He is making nice grabs in practices and he is getting all kinds of praise from his coaches. Keep an eye on LaFell during the preseason. I think he could take 1-2 years to develop, especially with Matt Moore under center in early 2010, but his future is looking bright. Jimmy Clausen and LaFell will soon build a rapport and flourish together.
Tavaner: One recent ADP I saw has Smith coming of the board at the end of round 4 surrounded by all the players Smitty just mentioned. Smith is the WR to own from the Panthers and I expect him to finish the season with numbers close to 65/1000/8. Matt Moore will depend on him and I expect Smith will deliver on those WR2 numbers.
According to DallasNews.com, due to his high-ankle sprain, Cowboys WR Dez Bryant will be in a protective boot for two weeks.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: While he heals, Dez Bryant will stick by the side of wide receiver's coach Ray Sherman. Bryant stood by Sherman during most of Saturday's practice so that he could learn what his responsibilities would be on each play. "That's what we have to do because he's not going to be on the field," Sherman said. "He'll be in all of the meetings and he'll be out on the field watching." Bryant is truly an impressive rookie, and who knows, this situation could somehow speed up his understanding of the pro game. Tony Romo and Miles Austin will connect early and often in 2010, and once Bryant is fully healthy, he will help shape Romo into a top 4-5 fantasy quarterback. Bryant's future is bright – He could very well start playing like a fantasy WR2 by the end of the 2010 NFL season.
Tavaner: Dez Bryant currently has an ADP of WR 17, which is a bit too early for my tastes. That may drop a bit as nervous owners worry about his injury. However, even in redraft leagues you are unlikely to find a more valuable waiver wire pickup as a WR2. I'd keep him ranked around WR23 and would have no hesitation about grabbing him if here were available after that. The Dallas offense is very fantasy friendly.
According to reports, the unspecified injury that Vikings WR Percy Harvin suffered on Saturday was an ankle injury. Despite some swelling, Harvin was actually able to return to form during Saturday night's practice.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Clearly the receiver is fine. This is great news for Brett Favre owners. Sidney Rice, assuming his hip issues will be behind him come Week 1, will be the team's leading receiver in 2010, but Percy Harvin could play like a fantasy WR3 in 2010.
Tavaner: The rash of early injuries to skill players underlines the need for depth over the course of a season. Harvin currently has an ADP at the end of the 4th round. His ranking as WR26 is a bit low as he'll outperform many of the rookies being taken before him. He's a solid low end WR2 whom Brett Favre loves to throw to.
According to CSNPhilly.com, Eagles WR DeSean Jackson was carted off the practice field on Saturday afternoon with what appeared to be a back injury. "Nothing too serious," linebacker Omar Gaither said about the injury. "He should be all right."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: The Eagles have not announced the severity of the injury yet, but it was reported that there was no contact on the play. It sounds like DeSean Jackson fell to the ground after making a twisting catch and he probably just tweaked something. He remained down for several minutes, but he reportedly stood up and slowly limped to the sideline where he got in the front seat of a cart and drove off. We will keep you posted, but our guess is that he will be fine with some good rest. I expect Kevin Kolb to have a monster breakout season in 2010, and I absolutely expect Jackson to once again be a top 10 fantasy wide receiver.
Tavaner: DeSean Jackson left the locker room on his own about thirty minutes after practice so owners can rest easy for now. I am very high on Kolb and Jackson for this coming season. Draft both players with confidence in redrafts. Both players have an ADP around the 3-4 turn in redrafts and I expect Kolb to QB many a championship team in that format.
According to reports, Browns rookie RB Montario Hardesty will miss "a couple weeks" after injuring his knee in practice earlier this week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: It sounds like Montario Hardesty, who is battling Jerome Harrison for the Browns' starting running back job in 2010, injured the knee on Thursday. This is the first we've heard of it, but the initial word is that the injury will not require surgery. The fact that "surgery" was even brought up is concerning, but we will have to take a wait and see approach with this one. This could help Harrison hang onto the starting job entering Week 1. My advice here is to stay clear of this RBBC situation in 2010 unless you can land both runners at bargain-type value in your upcoming August drafts.
Tavaner: For gutsy owners or leagues not having drafted yet, this is a situation we'll monitor carefully. Cleveland likes to run the ball and it was an offense based on the run that saved HC Eric Mangini's job last year. Harrison has a chance to establish himself as the clear #1 through the first half of the season. With an ADP of RB39 Harrison becomes a great value pick as a potential RB2 that you can get later in the draft.
According to NFL.com, Vikings WR Percy Harvin was carted off the practice field on Saturday with an unspecified injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This comes one day after the Vikings placed Sidney Rice on the PUP list due to "lingering" hip problems. We will keep you posted on this one. Last season, as a rookie, Percy Harvin set a Vikings record with 2,081 combined yards, which was second in the NFC. He also pulled in an impressive 60 receptions for 790 yards and six touchdowns.
Tavaner: Until we know more it's all conjecture, but Bernard Berrian's value could increase dramatically, as well as Visanthe Shiancoe's. We'll keep you posted as updates are available.
According Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Broncos WR Brandon Marshall won't be pulling in 100 catches in 2010.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Brandon Marshall has pulled in 100 catches in three consecutive seasons (102, 104, 101). Will that amazing streak end in 2010? Marshall, who was traded to Miami during the off-season, will now have Chad Henne tossing him the football. Some call Henne a downgrade from Kyle Orton, but I firmly disagree. To view my Brandon Marshall projections and predictions heading into 2010, check out my most recent Player Spotlight on the stud.
Tavaner: Owners will be very pleased with the Chad Henne to Brandon Marshall connection. Henne had three games of over 300 yards against NE, Tenn and Houston in one four game stretch at the end of last season. Henne threw an average of 34 times a game last year, Schaub and Brade 37 times a game. During that four game stretch, Henne average 45 passes per game. With a legitimate WR1 he'll add to that total this year. Marshall was targeted 149 times last year and I'd expect the number of targets to be similar this year as Miami once again sifts it's offense to utilize talent.
According to ESPN.com, Cowboys rookie WR Dez Bryant, who suffered a high-ankle sprain on Friday, will be sidelined for the remainder of training camp and could quite possibly miss the entire preseason. Bryant was injured in a collision on the practice field near the end of practice on Friday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Dez Bryant still should end up having a phenomenal rookie season, and his future is insanely bright, but this injury is sure to slow his progress down a bit. Bryant was on pace to turn heads right out of the gate in 2010, but an injury like this can often linger… and the biggest problem with injuries like these is that most athletes try to return way too early. Then the injury lingers even longer. If Bryant is smart, he will take it slow and come back at 100 percent. For now, it looks like Roy Williams will hold onto his starting. Look for Dez to hit full-speed by mid-season and expect a whole lot of Miles Austin early on in 2010. Tony Romo is going to drop top 3-5 fantasy quarterback numbers this upcoming season, so get your Cowboys' popcorn ready!
Tavaner: With a week 4 bye Bryant could be set up for an electrifying last half of the season. If he comes back healthy this break may allow him to miss the rookie wall, break in part time over the first few games and come back strong after the bye week. Missing this time doesn't help Bryant but the Dallas offense won't miss a beat and will only be more effective once he can take the field in any capacity.
According to Charlotte Observer beat writer Darin Gantt, Panthers rookie WR Brandon LaFell "looked like a kid who could put some serious heat on Dwayne Jarrett for a starting job."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Brandon LaFell has good upside for the future, but it could take him half a season to get going and another season after that to come into his own. His real upside will come as Jimmy Clausen develops. The two could develop a strong rapport and LaFell could, in good time, become the No. 1 wide receiver in Carolina.
Tavaner: LaFell plays on a run first offense with two potential 1000 yard rushers. While he may put heat on Jarrett I doubt he'll put any heat on fantasy owners to grab him as other than a stop gap desperate bye week fill-in, if he wins the starting job. Flyer is the only word that applies.
According to reports, Cowboys rookie WR Dez Bryant injured his ankle in a collision on the field during Friday's practice. Bryant will have an MRI.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: We will keep you posted on the severity of the injury just as soon as the MRI results become known. Early indications suggest that the receiver may have suffered a high ankle sprain. Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones reportedly commented on the injury saying that the team is hopeful that Bryant will only miss "a few" days of practice. Clearly there are several different assumptions being made right now by all kinds of different people, all of which will soon be confirmed or shot down just as soon as the MRI results become known. Stay tuned.
Tavaner: This may postpone Bryant's coming out party as a starting NFL WR, but based on training camp reports it's only a matter of time. With a week 4 bye, Dallas can take the time to get Dez fully healthy, break him in slowly to the speed of the NFL, and have him ready to go in week 5. What will be most affected by his absence is his timing with Romo, but some extra work after practice can smooth out those rough edges.
According to reports, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed on Friday that Bengals RB Cedric Benson will not be suspended due to his alleged involvement in a bar-involved incident back in June.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is great news for Cedric Benson owners, but it is also great news for anyone that owns Carson Palmer, Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco. Having a strong running game will help keep defenses honest and Benson clearly got it done last year. While we like Benson, and again, he did clearly bring the heat in 2009, his ADP is in that 2.08 – 3.03 range… and that is just too high for me. Let someone else make Benson their second drafted player in 2010. I'd much rather have a LeSean McCoy, or a fantasy WR1 that is still lingering around those draft slots. If Benson's ADP drops and he can be had in the early fourth-round come draft day, clearly I'd suggest that fantasy owners invest… but I don't see his ADP dropping, especially after this news.
According to the Charlotte Observer, Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (heel) hopes to start practicing soon. "There's a lot of jokes being made here or there about that whole situation," Stewart said. "But me being an athlete and me being a competitor, practice is something that's very important to excel. You've got guys that are practicing around you and getting better and you're not being able to get the opportunity." Stewart also added: "Once I get healthy, it's going to be one of the best days of my life, to be able to get back to normal."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: First let me say that I like Jonathan Stewart a lot this year, but his inability to stay healthy opens the door for DeAngelo Williams every single season. The thing about this situation, though, is that the Panthers run the ball enough to keep both Williams and Stewart owners happy… but DeAngelo owners love the idea of job security, and Stewart's injury history provides just that. Every year we hear that Stewart is finally going to be healthy, yet J-Stew never ends up being fully healthy. While I predict Williams to rush for a lot more yards than Stewart, I predict that both rushers hit the 1,000-yard mark in 2010. I also see both scoring at least 10 times. The extra yardage makes Williams the second-round talent entering 2010... Stewart is better served as a third- to fourth-round grab. The Williams vs. Stewart debate will get extremely interesting next off-season, as Williams could be playing elsewhere in 2011. Keep all this in mind as you draft these guys come August, as Williams is in a contract year… he will be playing for money in 2010, and that kind of motivation can often lead to a monster fantasy campaign.
Tavaner: Same old story in the pre-season for Stewart and I expect it will be another 1000 yard season for him as well as DeAngelo Williams. With Matt Moore the QB of today, the Panthers will showcase the same offense we've recently seen. Only Buffalo, Cleveland and the Jets pass less than the Panthers. DeAngelo Williams is in his contract year, so I expect a big push from him.
According to reports, Patriots WR Wes Welker (knee/shoulder) took part in drills in Patriots' practice on Friday - He was reportedly able to run some routes as well.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is great news for all you Wes Welker owners out there. Clearly he has a long way to go, and no player is really ever 100 percent healthy their first year back from ACL surgery, but it is starting to sound more and more like Welker will be coming off the active/PUP soon. I still feel Randy Moss has one year left as a top 10WR, so adding that with a relatively healthy Welker should equal a bounce-back fantasy season out of Tom Brady in 2010. Brady is getting drafted in the late third- to early fourth-round, which should be an absolute steal when all is said and done in 2010. As for Welker and my projections for him entering 2010, look for a Player Spotlight on Welker here shortly.
According to a Tweet by Jeff Duncan, Saints WR Marques Colston had a knee scope procedure done in the offseason, something GM Mickey Loomis calls "nothing serious".
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Marques Colston seems to have injury concerns each and every season, and while I would usually advise people to stay away from red flags entering August drafts, Colston is dropping into that 3.04 a 3.07 range on our FFX 2010 ADP rankings. That's WR2 slotting if your draft strategy is to go with two WRs in the first three rounds. As a third or fourth player drafted in 2010, what's not to like?
X: It appears Colston will start training camp on the active/PUP list to allow him ample time to recover for the season without setbacks. He has had these procedures in the past without issue, so I see no reason to worry this time around. Still, keep an eye on the news in case something changes, but for right now there is no reason to move him down your draft board.
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Chargers have extended the contract of TE Antonio Gates for an additional 5 years, paying the all-pro $7.2 million per season with $20 million in guarantees. Those figures make Gates the highest paid TE in the league.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: With Vincent Jackson suspended to start the year, and with the chance he could get traded (or holdout through Week 10), Antonio Gates could have a phenomenal 2010 campaign. Worst case scenario for those counting on more targets for Gates this year, Jackson returns to an offense that has learned to play without him. Don't get me wrong, I think Jackson could still have a good year upon his return in Week 4, if he doesn't holdout that is, but in the end, i believe that Gates will be the one Philip Rivers counts on in 2010.
X: Gates has been a fantasy stud at the TE position for more than a few years now, so the extension is well deserved. Even at 30 years old, Gates could very well produce career numbers in 2010 with Tomlinson gone and Vincent Jackson still unsigned. If your league doesn't use the TE position, draft him with confidence as a WR2.
According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, RB Felix Jones is the projected starter, with Marion Barber and Tashard Choice backing him up. King calls this trio the best in the NFL.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: King's assertion on Jones is in direct contrast to an article I read earlier in the day suggesting Barber was the clear starter with Jones backing him up. The bottom line is that both of these guys get their touches, and even though I believe Barber will get the majority of the split, Jones could very well outperform him because of his explosiveness. If you play in a TD-heavy league, Barber is the guy I lean toward, otherwise Jones gets the nod. Either way, you are looking at two guys in the same backfield that will hover between RB2/RB3 depending on your scoring. Don't forget Choice will be in the mix too, and he will have no problem putting up similar numbers if injury strikes… a great insurance policy if you own Jones or Barber.
According to NFL.com, the Seahawks and WR Golden Tate have agreed to terms on a contract that will pay the rookie $3.26 million, including a $1 million signing bonus. Tate was voted the nation's top college receiver in 2009 with 93 receptions and 1,496 yards - Notre Dame records. Tate commented via his Twitter account, saying "Praise God!!! Terms and conditions have been reached for the seattle seahawks! Let's play ball!"
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Seasonal owners should consider Tate a bench player, worth taking a shot on with the age of TJ Houshmandzadeh and Deion Branch. From a dynasty perspective, Tate is a guy I rank toward the end of round 1 in rookie drafts, a few spots higher if you play in PPR. I see him developing into a WR2 (or better), but it will take a few seasons.
According to a story in the Miami Herald, RB Ronnie Brown is calling 2010 the most important season of his career, both in terms of his contract and the fact that he feels he needs to prove himself again after a couple of down years. "I don't want to just fill a hole. I want to be an impact player. I want to be the leading rusher in the NFL. I want to go in first through fourth down and be involved. The milestone for a running back is 1000 yards, but I would like to go well beyond that."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Brown is a tough player to peg, because we have seen both sides of him in the last few years. After his knee injury at the midpoint of the 2007 season, he has been mostly pedestrian, averaging around 1200 total yards and 5 TDs. Those are not terrible numbers, but they don't justify him as anything more than an RB3 right now. Yes, there is the potential for him to outplay his ADP and put up RB2 numbers, but the presence of Ricky Williams and the emergence of Henne and that passing game doesn't convince me it will happen.
According to PFT, the Bengals have agreed to terms with WR Terrell Owens on a one-year deal worth $2 million.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is great news for Carson Palmer owners… Terrell Owens still could have a strong year left, and if he does, this is the perfect situation for that. Owens could see another $2 million in incentives with this deal, so he should be motivated. Can you say fantasy bargain WR3 experiment?
X: Carson Palmer is the one who lobbied for Owens after their recent workout, so that tells me Owens still has enough left in the tank for 2010. Like Smitty, I rank Owens in the WR3 range, but I would not be at all surprised to see Owens put up WR2 numbers in this offense. And, as I stated earlier in the day, this signing absolutely kills Antonio Bryant's fantasy value, so unless an injury happens he now becomes a later round bench player.
According to Beat writer Mike Reiss on twitter, Patriots WR Wes Welker was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list by the Patriots. Welker can come off the list at any time.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: This means, theoretically, that Wes Welker can't practice. Though, two years ago Peyton Manning participated in walk throughs while on the PUP list and no action was taken. A player can remain on the PUP list through camp and into the regular season. If on PUP list to start the regular season, the player is not eligible to join the active roster through Week 6. Expect news about Welker to keep owners on a roller coaster through the first third of the season.
According to the Buffalo News, based on the offseason practices, and his outstanding 2009 campaign, RB Fred Jackson is the early favorite to start at running back for the Bills in 2010.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I agree with Tavaner that Jackson will start - all signs are pointing that way. However, in spite of Gailey's history of riding one horse, it is hard to believe Lynch will simply ride the pine for Buffalo, and that is a major concern for me. I think there is still a chance Lynch gets traded... if not, I don't see how this is not a committee to some degree and that automatically devalues both of these guys. I like Jackson as an RB3 and Lynch as bench fodder, but if I am drafting either, I want both to assure I lock up that backfield.
Tavaner: If Jackson gets the starting nod, and I believe he will, he could become that RB you grab in later rounds who ends up carrying you to the fantasy playoffs. Chan Gailey has a history of featuring one RB in his offenses. This is insane value in rounds 8/9 where he is currently being drafted. Our ADP of the 7th round is spot on.
According to NFL.com, rookie RB Montario Hardesty has signed his contract with the Browns, reportedly for four years at around $3.3 million. Hardesty will enter training camp with a chance to win the starting job from incumbent Jerome Harrison.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Jerome Harrison finished last season on a high note - rushing for 570 yards over the Browns final four games. Means nothing at this point, because the Browns drafted Hardesty in the second round of April's draft in the hopes he can be their feature back one day. When and if that day comes is the question. Right now I have to believe Harrison has a big leg up on the rookie and we'll have to sit back and see how much Hardesty can cut into that lead over the summer. Dynasty owners should regard Hardesty as a top 8 pick in their rookie drafts - any rookie RB with the potential to start for a team has a lot of value.
According to Yahoo! Sports, the Cincinnati Bengals have spoken to WR Terrell Owens about a contract to play for them in 2010 and are awaiting a decision. They won't wait for very long though, they reportedly want an answer from him in the next couple of days.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The only hesitation from Owens has to be about money, because otherwise this is the perfect situation for him to land in at this point in his career. If he does sign with the Bengals, Antonio Bryant's value will take a nose dive. Stayed tuned.
Tavaner: The NYJets have now expressed interest in Owens as well. Expect him to be signed sometime this week, with other teams likely to be mentioned as well. The Bengals and Jets will still be run first offenses so don't reach for him as more than a WR3.
According to NFL.com, RB Adrian Peterson will be present when the Vikings open training camp this week in spite of rumors suggesting he was in a contract squabble and might hold out. "Oh yeah I'll be there. Without a shadow of a doubt. Whether there is contract talk or not, I will be there."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Chris Johnson is at the top of the draft board for many this season, but I would personally have a hard time passing up Adrian Peterson at #1 given the choice - even in PPR. Consider Peterson had 43 catches last season with Chester Taylor around and I see a ton of room for improvement in his receiving numbers. You are looking at a guy who could easily surpass 2,000 total yards, 50 receptions and in the neighborhood of 20TDs. The fact that you could potentially land this guy at #3 or #4 is hard to believe.
Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic believes QB Matt Leinart would have to "play terribly" to lose the starting job to backup Derek Anderson.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I happen to believe Leinart will play much better than people expect, but at the same time there are bound to be growing pains and hopefully he will be allowed to weather those without being yanked prematurely. From a fantasy perspective, I'd be hard pressed to suggest Leinart as anything more than a backup QB for your team, but he's not that far off for me. If you do draft him, add Anderson later if you have the roster space – having both will assure you a decent backup to your starter regardless of how this plays out.
According to reports in USAToday, Dez Bryant refused to carry Roy Williams' pads when the Cowboys opened camp this weekend. Williams said if Bryant doesn't take part, he'll have to move to "step two" of the initiation program.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: Not fantasy relevant? It may be one of the few times veterans will support Williams over Bryant and this has all the signs of escalating and becoming personal. I'm sure they'll treat it lightly in the media but it could be anything but that in the locker room. The sooner this is diffused the better the team chemistry.
According to Boston Herald reports, a source close to the situation told the Herald it was more likely the wide receiver would start camp on the “Active PUP” list as a precaution. Avoiding the PUP list would be significant for Welker and the Patriots. It would mean they’re so impressed with his progress they would of forgo the ability to put him on the “Reserve PUP” list down the road, losing the opportunity to hold his roster spot for the first six weeks of the season. They would surrender that protection because a player must be on Active PUP in order to be considered for the Reserve PUP. So that would be huge. According to the source, the Pats haven’t etched anything in stone just yet with regard to Welker. If anything, they are leaning more toward the PUP list at this point.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: This news about Wes Welker isn't new to the FFX family as I've said the same thing in a few threads. With a tough schedule and a week 5 bye the Patriots won't rush Welker onto the field. While he may avoid the PUP don't be surprised Welker doesn't make any pre-season appearances. Once the season begins I believe NE will hold Welker out for as long as possible, like game 6 against the Ravens. If he's not on PUP teams will have to game plan for him. I know that sounds strange, but we are going to have to watch this unfold. In the meantime I'd urge Edelman owners to try to hold onto him. There won't be a more valuable waiver wire pickup in ppr leagues should Welker try to come back too soon.
According to ESPN, the Rams are prepared to offer free agent WR Terrell Owens a contract, possibly as soon as Monday. Other reports have surfaced indicating the Bengals are involved in contract discussions with Owens as well.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: As more camps start to open across the NFL, Owens contract talks have begun to heat up. Hard to believe Owens would sign with the Rams, a team with no real playoff aspirations. The Bengals make a lot more sense. Either way, Owens will likely be signed by a team this week - which one signs him will determine his fantasy value.
Tavaner: Tough to believe the Rams would subject a rookie QB to Owens' sideline tirades but he would sell tickets and catch a few passes in St Louis. Draft him as a WR3 as he should be able to duplicate or better last years 55/829/5 numbers in a dome, even with a rookie QB.
According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, TE Jermichael Finley has had his most impressive offseason thus far, and according to Packers tight end coach Ben McAdoo, he is at a point where he is focusing on details of the game. “We’re working on the fundamentals and the details now, we don’t spend much time talking about assignments. He’s made a lot of strides in being a complete player so far this offseason, I’m not just talking these two (offseason) practices.” Finely is entering his third season, hoping to improve on his 2009 totals of 55 receptions, 676 yards and five touchdowns.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: It's no secret that Jermichael Finley is our No. 1 ranked tight end in all formats entering 2010. If you ask me, Finley is the next Antonio Gates and I project the future stud to crank out 1,000+ yards and 10TDs this upcoming season. With Greg Jennings set to have a huge bounce-back season in 2010, Aaron Rodgers is locked into our No. 1 ranked quarterback slot heading into this upcoming season.
X: Finely is our no. 1 tight end this season across all formats, and this article just reinforces that belief. With Rodgers at the helm and great players at all the skill positions on offense, Finley is primed to have a monster campaign in 2010.
Tavaner: This may be the last chance dynasty owners have to acquire Finley before he becomes one of the "untouchables". After a season where he'll flirt with 90/1100/9 numbers you'll have to gut your team to acquire him. As long as he is healthy, he and Aaron Rodgers are the coming gold standard in fantasy football.
According to a Tweet by Chris Mortensen of ESPN, WR Antonio Bryant is still having issues with his injured knee, and suggests this could be a reason the Bengals may look at free agent WR Terrell Owens.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Bryant's health is something to keep an eye on throughout training camp, if it responds well I think he could be in for a great season opposite Chad Ochocinco.
According to 98.5 The Sports Hub, the Patriots are expected to medically clear WR Wes Welker for full participation in two-a-days when training camp opens next week. Welker is recovering from surgery to repair tendons in his knee, an injury suffered at the end of last season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This is great news for Welker owners as he is well ahead of a typical recovery schedule for this kind of injury. Setbacks are still possible, so be cautious about moving Welker too far up your draft lists. If the positive news continues, Welker will move back into WR2 range, higher in PPR, and both Tom Brady and Randy Moss will see their values go up for this season as well.
According to the Associated Press, rookie WR Dez Bryant inked a contract with the Cowboys - nearly $12 million over 5 years - to become the lone first round pick to be signed thus far. The signing comes just in the nick of time, as the Cowboys open camp on Friday and will have their first practice on Saturday morning, something Bryant is ecstatic about. "This was very important to me to be able to get this done in time for the first practice. I want to help this team. I want to compete. I can't wait to start playing football again."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Rookies who get a deal done in time for the first day of training camp have a huge edge when it comes to success in year one. I expect Bryant to make a bigger splash than most rookie receivers and if all goes well I don't think it is out of the question for him to put up WR2 numbers. You can probably get him at a lower cost than that, but the upside is there with his talent and the superb surrounding cast in Dallas.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Bengals RB Cedric Benson will meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday to discuss his arrest on June 29th. Benson is accused of punching a bar employee, but claims he was hit first and it was self defense. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is flabbergasted as well and doesn't believe Benson deserves a suspension for the incident. “I don’t know why we we’re even talking about Cedric being suspended a game. I don’t even know why we’re bringing it up. To me it’s unbelievable. The truth about Cedric is that [he] got sucker punched in a bar. That’s the thing. And only because it was Cedric Benson does it become news.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: There are two sides to every story, and it is Roger Goodell's job to sort it out and hand out any penalties he sees fit. The bottom line is that it doesn't appear this will amount to more than a one game suspension, and the better news is that Marvin Lewis seems to be in Benson's corner. That means there is little chance any further discipline will come down from the team, and Benson's role as starter won't change because of this incident.
According to ESPN New York, WR Hakeem Nicks is currently no. 3 on the depth chart behind Steve Smith and Mario Manningham, but is determined to do what it takes to be a starter. Nicks caught 47 passes for 790 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie last season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Hakeem Nicks has huge upside heading into this upcoming season, and he might be a future Fantasy WR1 if he keeps improving. Steve Smith might have something to say about that, and clearly Smith has fantasy WR1 upside himself, but my money is on Nicks taking over the team's top receiving spot in 2010 and beyond.
X: I expect Hakeem Nicks to win this battle and emerge as the Giants no. 2 receiver by the time camp ends. As a starter, he should be able to improve on his rookie numbers as I see the Giants more of a passing team than they have been in the past. Expect solid WR2 numbers in 2010.
Tavaner: Nicks value in a dynasty will be more than his redraft value this year. I expect 70/1000/9 from this second year player with occasional inconsistency due to Steve Smith who will again catch more passes but have similar production. Both are good WR2 options in an offense that threw for 4000 yards last year.
According to USA Today, QB Brett Favre told reporters that head coach Brad Childress gave him no deadline to return to the Vikings after the two visited earlier in the week. "If I could guarantee it, I would. Obviously, I can't make people understand what I'm going through." Favre is referring to the ankle he injured last season that has still not fully healed, and that is a cause for concern. "After almost nine weeks, it's not where I would like it to be, but I'm working at it. Maybe it never gets to where I want it to be. Forty years old…three surgeries…that's all you need to know."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It continues to amaze me how much leeway Favre gets year after year. The Vikings are a SuperBowl contender with Favre, not so much without, so I can see why Childress is not pushing the issue. Still, at some point he needs an answer if he hopes to have Sage Rosenfels or Tavaris Jackson ready for the season should Favre decide not to come back. Like everyone else, I would be shocked if he didn't return, but we won't know that for sure until mid-August.
According to SignOnSanDiego.com, rookie RB Ryan Mathews, who has yet to sign with the Chargers, isn't quite sure if he will be in training camp on time. “It’s also a business,” Mathews said. “That’s what I have to realize. … I want to be on time. Hopefully that happens. If not, there’s nothing I can do.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Mathews, the 12th overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, has HUGE upside with the Chargers. The rookie will eventually sign, of that I have no doubt. It's reporting late to camp that concerns me, as that can often lead to injury when it comes to rookie running backs. As of this moment, though, I consider Mathews a top 12-14 overall talent heading into 2010 redraft leagues. I Rank him even higher in dynasty formats. My slotting of Mathews could change as we get closer to August, but I highly doubt it. With Vincent Jackson suspended for the first three games of the season, and with Jackson's holdout threats, the Chargers will need Mathews in a major way in 2010 -- They will get him inked soon enough. I project about 1,400 total yards, 30-35 receptions and 10+ total scores for Mathews in 2010. He will make an outstanding fantasy RB2 when all is said and done.
X: Matthews is by far my highest rated rookie heading into 2010 and while this news may be disconcerting for his owners, I don't see much of an issue here. This is more or less a public "correction" of his earlier comments that he would not hold out. That is a pretty bold statement to make and I am sure his agent was none too pleased and very likely made him clarify his position. As Smitty says, the deal will get done and Matthews will be a strong RB2 this season – the only risk, as with all rookie runners, is hitting the wall later in the season. Something to be aware of if Matthews is in your draft plans.
Tavaner: Mathews is in a solid position with no significant competition for the lead back role. My concern about Mathews begins with the offensive line but also includes Philip Rivers and the Chargers being a pass first offense. While a 1000 yards rushing is not beyond his talent and 1200 total yards certainly within his reach my expectations are tempered in redrafts due to the inconsistency that comes with a rookie RB.
According to the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, the Titans reworked RB Chris Johnson's contract for the upcoming season to address a possible holdout. La Canfora says Johnson will get paid around 2 million extra dollars this season, and that will give both sides more time to rework his contract after the season ends.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: From what I have been reading on this, Johnson essentially got an escalator due at the end of this season pushed up to the front end of the deal. The Titans were not about to do more than that and CJ finally agreed. With that out of the way, Johnson owners can breathe a sigh of relief and get ready for monster numbers in 2010.
According to Cincinnati.com, "the odds are very good" that Bengals RB Cedric Benson will avoid any kind of suspension in 2010. The league is still looking into his involvement in a recent bar fight, where Benson was charged with a Class-A misdemeanor.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Benson ran for 1,251 yards and 6TDs on 301 carries in 2009. Those are impressive numbers given Benson only played in 13 games last season. Can the runner be counted on in 2010? Well, that depends where you draft him! As of this moment, our 2010 FFX ADP has Benson slotted in the 3.11 to 4.03 range. Honestly, that is too high for me. Some may consider that about right, but I'm not going to let my 2010 fantasy football season ride on the shoulders of Cedric Benson. He was impressive last season, I admit, but the first four selections on draft day are critical for building a winning fantasy football team. I'll possibly grab Benson in the late fourth-round, depending on who is available, but my guess is that Benson won't fall that late — And that's fine by me. I will be grabbing players like Tom Brady, Greg Jennings, Tony Romo, Matt Schaub and even Pierre Thomas before I grab Ced this August.
Tavaner: Benson doesn't have a contract extension so he'll be motivated. He will give you over 1100 yards and 6+ TDs but with Greene, Wells and Stewart still on board you have later options that will give you similar or better numbers this year.
According to KansasCity.com, Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is "expected to be the centerpiece of the Chiefs’ offense" in 2010.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: It sounds like Jamaal Charles' off-season shoulder surgery isn't much of a concern, so that's good news. As for Charles' upside entering 2010, I think it all boils down to draft value. As it stands right now, Charles' ADP is around 2.11 to 3.04. I don't mind him so much as my third player drafted, but I can't grab Charles in the second-round in 2010. I would rather let someone else roll the dice. He has a grip of talent and upside, but that offense could struggle early and often this upcoming year and I see that unit being very inconsistent at times. Charles might have some big games in 2010, but he could also flop every other Sunday. I won't go so far as to call Charles a risky grab, since his ADP isn't that high right now, but I'd rather have a player like LeSean McCoy at the bottom of the second if given the choice.
Tavaner: Jamaal Charles is my choice for the break out RB this year. He started only one game prior to the bye week (8) last year. The more touches he got, the better he was. I have no problem taking him in the second round of a draft. In addition to the 1350 yards or so rushing he'll provide, I believe he is good for 55 receptions and another 550 receiving yards while contributing double digit TDs for your team. Expect the screen to Charles to be a favorite for both Matt Cassel and Charlie Weiss.
According to NFL.com's Michael Lombardi, Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart is "finally healthy" and is set to "have a great year."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is great news for all you Jonathan Stewart owners out there. I still have DeAngelo Williams pegged as a top 15 overall player heading into 2010, but that Carolina rushing attack can produce two 1,000-yard running backs in 2010. Stewart ran for 1,133 and 10TDs last season, while Williams ran for 1,117 yards and 7TDs. Williams is entering a contract year, so expect a huge 2010! Both backs could score 10+ times this upcoming season.
According to reports, the Chargers do not appear to be interested in signing free agent WR Terrell Owens.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Even though the Chargers probably want to stay clear of drama at the receiver position, Owens makes a lot of sense if you ask me. Is he still a top 10WR? No, but in the right situation (a winning team with a good QB and strong rushing attack), Owens could be very hard working and motivated. Again, I don't think the veteran has elite-type numbers left in the tank, but in San Diego, given the openings at the receiver position, I honestly believe Owens could actually crank out fantasy WR2-type numbers in 2010.
According to KansasCity.com, Redskins RB Larry Johnson has avoided jail after he failed to follow through with his 40 hours of court-ordered community service. Johnson was suppose to work with children at the Kansas City Police Athletic League.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: It is looking more and more like Clinton Portis is going to hold off both Larry Johnson and Willie Parker for that Redskins' starting running back job in 2010. I still don't have much faith in Portis this upcoming fantasy season, but I do project that the veteran will end up leading the team in carries by season's end.
According to the New York Post, some of the Jets skill players joined QB Mark Sanchez in California for a passing camp. Santonio Holmes, David Clowney, Dustin Keller, Jerricho Cotchery and Aundrae Allison were at the camp. Sanchez paid the airfare for everyone.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: This is quite a statement by NYJ QB Mark Sanchez and all the players who attended. It is noteworthy enough to include in our news because it is these kinds of efforts that translate into success during the season and result in players "emerging". In fairness, WR Braylon Edwards was attending a family wedding. It's also noteworthy that the OC for the Jets was there, just not on the field with the players. This is something to tuck away in your notes prior to your drafts but it bodes well for Holmes, Keller, Cotchery and Sanchez for this upcoming season.
According to the Detroit Free Press, when Lions WR Nate Burleson signed with the team, he clearly announced his intention to be an effective No. 2 receiver behind Calvin Johnson — a role that none of the Lions receivers could fill last season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: Lions WR Nate Burleson is all but forgotten and off the fantasy radar in redraft leagues . If you are looking for a WR that can give you 65/800/4 – which are WR3/4 numbers – consider Burleson, whom you can get near the end of a draft. He is currently around WR59 and if he is drafted, it is generally in drafts that go beyond 15 rounds. He produced 63/812/3 last year, despite missing 3 games. While healthy, he has always been a challenge for defenders, and he'll get single coverage now and the number of targets necessary for WR3 status. He could easily outproduce those 2009 numbers if he does finally stay healthy. All for the cost of a pick at the end of your draft.
According to StarTribune.com, Vikings RB Adrian Peterson Peterson "put to rest" the rumors that he is unhappy with his current contract. At the ESPY awards in Los Angeles, Peterson had this to say about the rumors: "You can put them to rest."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: The rumors have surfaced due to Adrian Peterson's absences during OTAs. Clearly he is good to go! AP will get almost $7 million this year and between $11 million and $13 million in 2011, depending on how many escalators the runner hits. AP will likely land a large contract after the 2011 NFL season. As for this upcoming fantasy season, the stud should have a top three overall fantasy campaign, even in PPR formats.
According to the Washington Post, Portis trimmed down to about 217 pounds after playing at more than 230 pounds last season. Don't be surprised if Clinton Portis is among the top candidates for this season's NFL comeback player of the year award. He is "expected to hold off Larry Johnson and Willie Parker for the starting job."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Tavaner: In redrafts you can't go wrong spending a 10th round selection on Clinton Portis. He's going to outproduce most of the rookies being drafted ahead of him. Shanahan knows how to motivate Portis and having Donovan McNabb at QB is going to give Portis some room to run that he has not had in recent years. Despite being drafted as a RB4 in most cases I believe he'll provide owners with at least one more season of RB2 numbers.
