According to ProFootballTalk.com, Eagles head coach Andy Reid confirmed RB Brian Westbrook will miss the next three games while doctors continue to evaluate his health after two concussions. There will be no definitive word on whether he plays again this season until the follow up evaluations occur.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I am of the opinion we won't see Westbrook back on the field again this year, but that has obviously not been confirmed yet. Knowing he is out for the next three games means seasonal owners have a decision to make - many variables come into play, but unless you can afford the spot to hold him he should be dropped in most cases. Even if he does return, I don't see him with a full workload again this season.
According to New Orleans Times-Picayune, Reggie Bush missed practice again on Friday and appears unlikely to play at Tampa Bay.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: It looks like the Saints could be playing it safe with Reggie for the stretch run as he has had multiple knee surguries over the past few seasons. This makes Pierre Thomas an even better start against the terrible TB run defense as Bush was starting to steal some close TD runs. Mike Bell also gets a bump in value this week.
According to MiamiHerald.com, after visiting with foot specialist Dr. Bob Anderson, Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown has decided to undergo surgery to repair the Lisfranc fracture in his right foot.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Brown will have the surgery today, and while he should be back before the 2010 season begins, he will most likely miss 2010 OTAs. Ricky Williams went nuts last night against the Panthers in his Week 11 outing, rushing for 119 yards and three total touchdowns. Ricky is a fine start in Week 12 against the Bills, but it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to unload Ricky while his value is insanely high (especially in dynasty leagues). Is he still a solid RB2 moving forward? Sure, but if you need a spark to make your playoffs, or if you want buy-low on a struggling fantasy RB1, cash in!
According to a story on Yahoo! sports, Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown was placed on IR Wednesday with a right foot injury, ending his season. Although the Dolphins had hopes he could return, it appears they decided against it after Brown visited a foot specialist. Ricky Williams will replace Brown as the Dolphins starter.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Tough break for all Brown owners, and we own the guy in numerous expert leagues. Brown kicked off the season in strong fashion, and even though he had some rough fantasy outings in recent weeks, we still had high hopes for Brown down the stretch. Brown is going to have a tough time getting back to starter-type carries in this league given the severity of the injury. Stay tuned.
X: This is a huge blow for Brown owners and it comes at a time when most leagues trade deadlines may have already passed or are about too. At this point, seasonal owners need to replace Brown and get another warm body on the roster to replace him - dynasty owners should obviously continue to hold Brown as his future value is still intact.
According to beat writer Darin Gantt, Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams missed practice today and is listed as questionable for Thursday night's game with the Dolphins.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Williams was a gametime decision all week prior to playing this past Sunday, and he finished with 92 yards on 19 carries. Being a short week, this one will likely come down to another gametime decision tomorrow night, but at least owners have the luxury of knowing his status early in the week. If he does go, there should be no hesitation about playing him; if not, Stewart becomes a viable start in his place.
According to NFL.com, RB Brian Westbrook has already been ruled out for the Eagles game against the Bears on Sunday. Head coach Andy Reid made the announcement during his press conference on Wednesday morning, and also added Westbrook was seeing concussion specialists in Pittsburgh. Rookie LeSean McCoy will get the start in place of Westbrook on Sunday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This should come as no surprise to anyone after seeing Westbrook sustain concussions in back to back games within a span of 3 weeks. Westbrook owners should also be bracing for the real possibility that he won't play again this season. McCoy makes a good start this week against the Bears and should be considered a borderline RB2 in most formats moving forward.
According to the Ravens website, K Steve Hauschka was cut by the Ravens today after missing a short field goal and extra point on Monday night. They have not signed a replacement as yet, but it appears either Mike Nugent or Billy Cundiff will replace Hauschka on the roster.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Kicker news is not something ordinarily worth posting, but in this case it is worth noting so fantasy owners are aware he needs to be replaced. Most any kicker will do, don't think too hard about it.
According to the Miami Herald, Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown has been ruled out for Thursday's game with the Panthers by head coach Tony Sparano. Brown has an appointment with a foot specialist Wednesday, so until that happens there won't be much more information on how much time he might miss. Ricky Williams is expected to start in his place.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Considering Brown is still unable to put weight on his right foot, this is no suprise - the real question is how long will he be out? Williams makes a great start in his place against Carolina, but the yards may come in a more conventional fashion with no obvious replacement to handle the wildcat duties in Brown's absence.
According to NFL.com, Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe has been suspended by the NFL for four games under their policy on performance enhancing subtances. The suspension is effective immediately.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This is quite a surprise. Not a lot of details yet, but Bowe owners need to be looking for a replacement in the lineup for the next month.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, tests have revealed Michael Turner has a high ankle sprain, although the team is being guarded about the specifics of the injury and any recovery time. "We're not going to give a competitive advantage to our next opponent on Monday afternoon," coach Mike Smith said. The Falcons seem content to wait until Wednesday to disclose his official status, although the resigning of Aaron Stecker late Monday does seem to be a clue to his availability for week 11.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If I had to guess, I'd say Turner is out this week so his owners should begin thinking about a backup plan. At this point, it is hard to suggest playing any Atlanta RB until we know the extent of Turner's injury and how the backfield rotation might shake out in his absence. We could very well be looking at a committee, and I'd expect Matt Ryan to shoulder more of the load as well.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, RB Larry Johnson is expected to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: This could be a sign that Cedric Benson is more hurt than the Bengals are leading on or that the Bengals are just loading up with depth for their playoff run. A change of scenary could certainly be good for LJ and the Bengals OL has played well all season, but I have to wonder how much he really has left. If Benson does miss anytime, I'd expect Bernard Scott to get the majority of the work, regardless if LJ signs.
According to the Miami Herald, RB Ronnie Brown will likely be out of this Thursday's game against Carolina with an ankle injury. After the injury, Brown needed help off the field and was seen limping out of the locker room on crutches. "Obviously, I can't really talk about it right now," said Brown. "We've still got to do some tests and see what happens. We did some X-rays. I don't think it's too bad."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Big blow for the Dolphins as Brown is a very big part of that wildcat offense they run. Big blow for his owners too, but someone's loss is another's gain, and in this case Ricky Williams owners could be in for a big week if Ronnie sits. Stay tuned.
According to Scout.com's Adam Caplan, via his Twitter account, fantasy worlds should not expect to see Eagles RB Brian Westbrook "for several weeks, if at all" this season. Westbrook sustained another concussion in Week 10, his second in recent weeks.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Don't cut Westbrook yet in fantasy leagues, but it's hard to imagine Westy ever returning as the starter in Philly this season. Westbrook is sure to miss several weeks of football, and if he does return to action as fantasy worlds enter the 2009 fantasy playoffs, the odds are against Westy stealing back his starting gig, as LeSean McCoy will probably thrive now that he is in the Eagles line-up full-time. Get ready McCoy owners, this is what all of you have been waiting for!
X: Back to back concussions for Westbrook does not bode well for the rest of his season. I'm not sure what protocol is in this situation, but it seems to me he is very likely out for a couple of weeks minimum considering the circumstances. It isn't like he was effective anyway, even his production pre-concussion was RB3 quality. Rookie LeSean McCoy is in line for much more work, and it looks like he will be the main man in Philly from here on out.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, RB Michael Turner left Sunday's game in the 2nd quarter with an ankle injury, one serious enough that he never returned to the game and was seen wearing a boot on the sideline. He is in line for an MRI on Monday, so not much more will be known before then.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Not much to say here except keep an eye out on Monday for more news on the extent of the injury and how much time Turner might miss, if any. Worst case scenario is a high ankle sprain, that would be very bad news for Turner owners as the recovery time can be a month or more.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, WR Bernard Berrian is active for today's game against the Lions.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If you need him, Berrian makes a decent start this week with a matchup versus the hapless Lions.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams is officially active for Sunday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Officially active does not mean DWill will see his typical workload, but it does mean most should get him in their lineup unless your depth allows you to go with a safer play. Stewart owners are now in a pickle since we have no idea how this workload will be split.
Appearing on NFL Gameday Morning, Jason La Canfora confirmed that WR Terrell Owens will play for the Bills on Sunday. Owens was listed as questionable with a hip injury all week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Owens has fallen off the radar as a fantasy starter this season, so although it looks like he will play, use him at your own risk in spite of the favorable matchup with Tennessee.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Falcons WR Roddy White will be playing in Sunday's game vs. the Panthers. He was listed as questionable all week with a knee injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This is good news for both Roddy White and Matt Ryan owners. Ryan has had a tough couple of weeks and needs his #1 guy playing if he hopes to bounce back. As for White, he should be in your lineup this week if you own him - he is too good to be sitting on your bench.
According to Pewter Report on Twitter, Bucs WR Antonio Bryant (knee) will not play in Week 10 against the Dolphins. Byrant did not travel with the team. Maurice Stovall will start in Bryant's place in Week 10.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Bryant has been a huge disappointment this season - Don't give up on him just yet in dynasty leagues, or even in deeper yearly leagues, but don't even think about counting on his production down the stretch. He just isn't healthy enough to count on at this point. If you're in a deeper dynasty league, keep an eye on Sammie Stroughter as we head into Weeks 10-16.
According to the Patriots Twitter page, RB Sammy Morris has been downgraded to out for their Sunday night matchup with Indianapolis. With Fred Taylor also still out, Laurence Maroney will get another start.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Early in the week, all signs pointed to Morris returning to game action but it looks like that won't be the case. Maroney gets another start and should be able to put up decent numbers against the Colts - consider him a borderline RB2 this week.
According to Rotoworld.com, Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams missed practice Friday with a knee injury and will be a game time decision.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: DeAngelo Williams' owners should monitor this very closely right up to game time Sunday as missing practice on Fridays is never a good sign. If Williams does not play Jonathan Stewart will get the start and will have a nice match up against the Falcons who are ranked 23rd in rushing defense. It is worthy to note that Williams is walking without a limp.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, WR Justin Gage will be out for week 10 and maybe longer with fractured bones in his back. As the article points out, it sounds worse than it really is since the breaks are in the "transverse process" - the spiny bones that jut out from the vertebrae. Typical healing time is a few weeks.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Gage is not necessarily a fantasy starter unless you are in deeper leagues, so this is not a huge hit for most teams. Rookie Kenny Britt will likely see more time alongside Nate Washington while Gage recovers.
According to a Tweet by Jason Reid, Redskins RB Clinton Portis has been ruled out for Sunday due to the concussion he suffered last Sunday. Ladell Betts is in line for the start.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: No surprise here. Betts makes a pretty good start this weekend if you are in need of RB2 numbers.
According to Mike Garafolo of the NJ Star-Ledger, the Giants are looking to get Danny Ware more touches, especially on 3rd downs.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Ware is definitely worth owning in deep leagues but temper expectations cause if the Giants had a lot of confidence in him they probably would not have drafted Andre Brown. Ware should get some more touches down the stretch this season though.
North End Dirtdogs: It might be early to say Ware is a big key to the season like Garafolo suggests as he's only had 2 carries all season and has yet to prove he can succeed on 3rd downs. However, the staff has been high him and he is playing behind an injury prone Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw is one mis-step from being out of the season. Let's not forget Ryan Grant came from this roster, and if given the chance, could we see a 2008 Pierre Thomas-like finish to the season from Ware? I think he is worth a roster spot in most dynasty leagues and worth a look in seasonal leagues if you have the space. This news certainly doesn't help Bradshaw's value any.
According to NBCSports.com, Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin ruturned to full practice on Wednesday and was not limited at all.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: This is great news for all Arizona Cardinals' offensive players and their owners, except for Steve Breaston. Boldin should be in fantasy lineups going forward and has a very favorable schedule coming up including fantasy play offs.
According to NBCSports.com, Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall missed practice on Wednesday with a back injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Marshall did just fine last Sunday so he should be good to go this week against Washington. Josh McDaniels and the Broncos are pretty secretive about their injuries so Marshall could end up on the injury report for the game so monitor his status throughout the week.
According to Fantasyfootballchamps.com, Carolina Panthers RB Deangelo Williams missed Wednesday's practice with a sore knee. Head coach John Fox said that Williams "tweaked the knee" and will be evaluated.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Williams should be fine by Sunday, but his status should be monitored until then. If he misses practice on Friday or is limited, Jonathan Stewart will play a much larger role with a nice match up against the Atlanta Falcons who rank 23rd against the run.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, recently released RB Larry Johnson cleared waivers and will now become an unrestricted free agent. As of now, there are few clues to which teams may try to work out a deal for his services.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: No surprise here as claiming LJ would have required the team to pick up the balance of his contract. The Patriots continue to be linked with LJ for obvious reasons, but for right now it is just rumor.
Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall rushed for 155 yards on 22 carries in the Steelers' Week 9 win against the Broncos on Monday night.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Mendy was phenomenal in his Week 9 outing, averaging 7.0 yards a pop. Expect Mendy to be a strong fantasy RB2 in Weeks 10-16.
According to a "Tweet" by Rick Maese, Clinton Portis suffered a concussion in game play against the Falcons. According to head coach Jim Zorn, Portis still does not remember the play and believes "he's doubtbul for this week". Ladell Betts would get the start in Portis' absence, and there are now rumors that the Redskins might be interested in adding recently released Larry Johnson.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If we use the recent concussion of Brian Westbrook as a measuring stick, there is little doubt that Portis will not play in week 10. Ladell Betts is a very good running back and he should have no problem stepping in and assuming the role of starter - evidenced by his 93 total yards and touchdown this past Sunday.
According to the Kansas City Chiefs' website, the team has parted ways with RB Larry Johnson. Here is the official text: "The Kansas City Chiefs released RB Larry Johnson on Monday. In 75 games (55 starts) with Kansas City, Johnson rushed 1,375 times for 5,996 yards (4.4 avg.) with 55 touchdowns. He also registered 151 receptions for 1,369 yards (9.1 avg.) with six TDs. He concluded his Chiefs career with 30 100-yard rushing games and also added two 100-yard receiving games."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Seasonal owners who decided to hold LJ should continue to do so until we at least know his landing spot. Dynasty owners won't get more than what remains in this season out of him, at 30 years old LJ just stepped off the proverbial fantasy ledge.
Gambler: I guess diamonds aren't forever. Larry has been on a solid decline the last few years and after his recent shots at the Chiefs coaching staff the handwriting was on the wall. Some team desperate for a RB will pick him up as soon as he clears waivers though.
According to PhiladelphiaEagles.com, Eagles' head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder released a statement on Sunday regarding Brian Westbrook's Week 9 deactivation: "On Friday afternoon Brian began experiencing symptoms of a mild headache. From that point forward, we had Brian re-evaluated by (team internist) Dr. Gary Dorshimer and we put him through extensive testing. Even though those tests were determined to be negative, we all thought it would be in the best interests of Brian and the team that he should be deactivated for tonight's game. We will continue to evaluate Brian this week..."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: For now, expect Westbrook to be a go for Week 10 against the Chargers. We will keep you posted on Westbrook's healthy throughout the week, though, so keep checking back.
X: Fantasy stuff aside, I like the fact that the Eagles are taking every precaution with Westbrook to be sure he has no lasting effects of this concussion down the road. It is nice to see a team put a player's health ahead of any competitive edge they would have gained.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, Bengals WR Chris Henry suffered a broken forearm in game action against the Ravens on Sunday. It is unclear at this time whether the Bengals will choose to place him on IR.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: I'm not the first one to say this, but Chris Henry has "elite" type talent, but it doesn't look like he is ever going to take that next step. Drop him in yearly leagues, as X advises below, and lower your expectations entering 2010. The talent is there, but I'm not so sure he is going to put it all together, at least not in Cincy.
X: If you were still holding out hope for Henry in spite of his lack of production, this news makes him an automatic drop in seasonal leagues.
According to NFL.com, rookie RB Donald Brown is inactive today for the Colts. Mike Hart will back up Joseph Addai at running back.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This news is more of interest to Addai owners, since Brown has not really been starter worthy this season. If you own Addai, start him with confidence.
According to NFL.com, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin is inactive today against the Bears.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Boldin has been nursing a high ankle sprain for a few weeks now, so it isn't a big surprise he is being held out. In his place, Steve Breaston makes a good play if you own him.
According to an NFL Network report, RB Brian Westbrook has been ruled out Sunday against the Cowboys. LeSean McCoy will get his second straight start this week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Wow, this one comes out of left field. Get Westy out of your lineups and McCoy in if you happen to own him. McCoy will get his looks and makes a good start today against the Boys in Philly.
According to NFL.com, WR Antonio Bryant has been ruled out for today's game against the Packers, after being listed as questionable with a knee injury this week. WR Brian Clark is expected to start in his place.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The article actually suggests Bryant is "most likely" out, but various news agencies have confirmed Bryant will not play. Brian Clark is not worth picking up unless you are in a real pinch for a warm body in your lineup today.
According to Foxsports.com, Falcons star WR Roddy White will play today against the Redskins. White had been dealing with a knee injury all week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Looks like it is safe to play White this week, and considering his production this season he should be in your lineup today. White's presence will also help Matt Ryan be more effective, and he is a good start against the Skins today.
According to Adam Shefter of ESPN, Ryan Moats will start at RB on Sunday for the Texans. He is expected to share carries with Steve Slaton.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: Not much of a surprise here as fumbling the football will cost you your job, not matter how talened a player you might be. Slaton will still get carries, but it looks like this is Moats' opportunity to show he can be a starting NFL RB. Slaton owners hope he fails as most owners invested a high draft pick on the runner. This situation might be best to avoid until things shake out, but Moats is the better play this week.
According to Indy Football Report, Colts RB Donlad Brown returned to practice on Wednesday and is currently not listed on the week 9 injury report.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: There have been conflicting reports about the severity of Brown's shoulder injury sustained in week 7. Some reports said he could miss a few weeks, while others claimed it was just a nagging injury. With Brown returning to practice and not listed on the initial injury report, it looks as though he has a good chance to play this week. Although he is scoring, Joseph Addai is plugging along at 3.3 YPC, so a healthy Brown should inject some explosiveness into the Indy rushing attack. Addai now becomes a riskier play this week with Brown's possible return.
According to the Oakland Tribune, RB Darren McFadden is expected to return to game action vs. Kansas City in week 10.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: The good news is that DMac is returning from his knee surgery, but his role is yet to be determined. Fargas has been running pretty well recently, so DMac may get eased back into action. If he is available in your league after being dropped, he makes a good add. However, with a horrible passing game and with two other capable backs to share cares with, I'd keep my expectations low. DMac has to prove he is not an injury prone bust in my eyes.
According to AZCardinals.com, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin didn't practice on Wednesday and could sit out Week 9. When asked about Boldin’s status for this weekend, coach Ken Whisenhunt had this to say: “We’ll do what it is the best interest of the team.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: It sounds like Boldin will sit this one out. This is good news for both Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston owners, though. If Boldin does sit, and nothing is official just yet, Fitz could have one of those 10 reception outings.
According to The Buffalo News Sports, QB Trent Edwards will resume his starting QB role against the Titans in week ten after their week nine bye.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: This is good news(I think)for any owners in the precarious situation of having to start Trent Edwards. Barring any setbacks he should be ready to go against a Tennessee Titans defense that ranks 25th against the pass.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Eagles coach Andy Reid has said that Brian Westbrook will return to practice this Wednesday to start preparing for this Sundays game against the Dallas Cowboys.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Good news for Westbrook owners; bad news for McCoy owners. Westbrook should be good to go Sunday against the Cowboys.
According t projo.com, New England Patriots rookie WR Brandon Tate will share #3 WR and kick-off return duties with Sam Aiken.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Brandon Tate was the #1 WR at North Carolina ahead of Giants' WR Hakeem Nicks before tearing his ACL and MCL so this kid has plenty of talent. While it will take some time before he contributes regularly on offense, he should be owned in dynasty and deep keeper leagues and will be very productive in leagues that give points for kick-off returns. At North Carolina, Tate set an NCAA record for combined kickoff and punt-return yards with 3,523 yards.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, TE Owen Daniels said after suffering a knee injury in Week 8 that he fears that he has a torn ACL. "My knee doesn't feel good, and I'm really concerned," Daniels said. "There's always a little bit of hope, but the worst-case scenario is that I'll be back and ready to go next year."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: It sounds like the stud Daniels is done for the year, but MRI results should confirm this later today. If out for the season, James Casey will see increased playing time. Casey is a talented player, but he is no Owen Daniels. Matt Schaub owners suffer quite a bit by this news, but again, we still need to wait for the MRI results on this one.
According to Greg Bedard on his Twitter account, Packers QB Aaron Rodgers "was limping severely" after his Week 8 loss to the Vikings.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Rodgers rushed for 52 yards on five carries on Sunday, which could explain his reoccurring foot injury. Word is that Rodgers will be fine, though, but certainly keep checking back with us. The quarterback has a great match-up in Week 9 at Tampa Bay, so as long as the foot issue is minor, expect great numbers from that Green Bay passing attack. Greg Jennings finally bounced back this week pulling in 8 balls for 88 yards and 1TD. Congrats if you took our advice and traded for him on the cheap. It took a couple weeks longer than we expected for him to bounce-back, but he should play like a top 12WR from here on out. Donald Driver is still playing well, as he caught 6 passes for 63 yards in Week 8. Driver should be a strong fantasy WR3 for Weeks 9-16.
According to Rotoworld, Texans RB Steve Slaton was benched in the first quarter in today's Week 8 match-up against the Bills after losing a fumble on his only carry. This was Slaton's fifth lost fumble on the year and coach Gary Kubiak has responded by inserting Ryan Moats into the starting line-up. Moats responded with 23 carries for 126 yards (5.5) and 3TDs.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: While it's easy to say that this is just a coaching proving a point, Slaton fantasy owners have to be concerned because Slaton never carried the football again after his first quarter fumble and Moats finished with 23 carries for 126 yards (5.5) and 3TDs. It's officially time to panic on Slaton. At the very least, Moats has earned part-time carries moving forward and may have grabbed the goal line work from Slaton. That's best case scenario for Slaton at this stage in the game. Ryan Moats will be the hottest pick-up this week in fantasy leagues.
According to reports, the Oakland Raiders have declared both RB Darren McFadden and WR Chaz Schilens inactive for Sunday's Week 8 game against the Chargers. Justin Fargas will continue to dominate the carries in Oakland until McFadden returns.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Darren McFadden might attempt to return to action after the Raiders' Week 9 bye. It's unclear when Chaz Schilens will be able to start. McFadden is no lock to even return in Week 9, but he isn't a bad player to target on the cheap if the price is right. I can't stress enough, though, only trade for him if the price is right!
According to reports, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin will start in Week 8 against Carolina.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Good news for Boldin owners and he should see more action this week than last week. He is a solid fantasy WR2 this week.
According to reports, Texans WR Andre Johnson is active for Week 8 and will start in Week 8 at Buffalo.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Andre Johnson and Matt Schaub are both top 2-3 at their position heading into fantasy Weeks 8-16.
According to reports, Eagles WR DeSean Jackson was involved in a one-car accident on Friday, but the wide receiver is fine and will start in Week 8.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Jackson is apparently fine and the speedster is one of the most underrated fantasy WR2s in the game.
According to NFL.com, WR Calvin Johnson is inactive for the Lions today and Dennis Northcutt will get the start in his place.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If you had Calvin in your lineup, time to find another option. Northcutt is not worth consideration unless you are desperate.
According to an NFL Network report, Giants WR Mario Manningham has been ruled out of today's game against the Eagles. Hakeem Nicks will start in his place.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Manningham looked like a go earlier in the morning, but has since been ruled out. Nicks will likely see more targets as a result, so bump him up your rankings for Week 8.
According to a Tweet by Adam Schefter, RB Brian Westbrook is not expected to play Sunday after suffering a serious concussion on Monday night. Rookie RB LeShon McCoy is in line for the start if Westbrook does not play.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: With Westy looking like he will sit, McCoy makes a good start today at home against the Giants, especially in PPR leagues.
According to AJC.com, Falcons RB Michael Turner "hasn’t been the same running back he was a year ago" and his average is down from 4.5 yards per carry to 3.4. Turner apparently feels that his heavy workload last year has nothing to do with his early struggles this season. “Physically, I feel the same,” Turner said. “I’m still healthy. It’s not about 300 and some carries last year.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Turner averaged 2.8 yards per carry last Sunday and has actually averaged under 2.6 yards per carry over his last two outings. The good news? The reason to trade for Turner now while his value is extremely low? He is on pace to score over 18 times this year, a number some current Turner owners may overlook. Buy-low if you can. Yea, I know, Turner did have over 370 carries last year, a number that is widely accepted as being the cause of the downfall of many running backs. The curse is called "Curse Of 370 Carries." While the curse often proves true, I believe in Turner for the remainder of the 2009 season (and beyond). The curse concerns me a little, but I think Turner is going to be a rare exception to the curse when all is said and done because of the lack of NFL carries to his name. I will just say that I firmly believe that the 370+ carries Turner had last year had a lot to do with his slow start this season (yardage-wise), but again his TD totals are fantastic and I say trade for him now before his YPC jump back up a ton. Have an offer on the table, or thinking about sending one out? Get our advice by using our Ask Our Staff feature, or by jumping on our FFX Fantasy Football Forums.
Bengals RB Cedric Benson is on pace for 374 carries in 2009.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Benson has been a beast this season. I'll be honest, I had my doubts about Benson lasting this long into the 2009 fantasy football season, but this game of fantasy football is all about observing and reacting and it's time to react. Expect more of the same this season and it's time to let go of the injury concerns -- For this year at least. If you own Benson in a dynasty league, I have different advice for you, which can be found in his most recent FFX Player Spotlight.
According to ESPN, WR Reggie Wayne participated fully in practice on Friday and is expected to start on Sunday against the 49ers. Wayne sustained a strained groin in his game last weekend.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Wayne is a must start against the 49ers this weekend, a defense ranked in the bottom third against the pass.
According to beat writer Nick Scurfield, Texans WR Andre Johnson practiced in full again on Friday and head coach Gary Kubiak commented that "Andre looked great. He's ready to go."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Based on this, consider Andre a full go this weekend against the Bills. I wouldn't consider this injury a reason to hesitate putting him in your lineup, he is one of a handful of wide receivers that are must-starts at all times.
According to the Nashville Tennessean, Vince Young will start at QB for the Titans on Sunday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: The owner was calling for this move and the team really has nothing to lose, so it makes sense. Young has a large cap number next season, so this is his audition to be the Titans starter for next season. I would stay away from Young and all of the receiving options in TEN until we see anything positive form Vince, but you probably weren't playing any of them anyway. This could be the last we see of Kerry Collins in an NFL uniform.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, Larry Johnson has been suspended two weeks for conduct detrimental to the team over derrogatory statements made both in the locker room and via his Twitter account. Johnson has already begun the process of filing an expedited appeal.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Johnson will miss the bye and one game as a result of the suspension. As I said before, I can't envision him getting significant playing time for the remainder of the season, even if he wins arbitration. The Chiefs are awful right now, and he is not playing to a level that can help them get better, so there is no reason for them to cater to his attitude. His overall value in both seasonal and dynasty leagues is in serious question right now, and I'd suggest dropping him in leagues with smaller rosters. Jamaal Charles has not gotten a lot of work to this point, so it is hard to say with certainty he will be able to step in and be productive. But he is certainly worth rostering if you need the help and have the roster room.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, on the same day Brian Westbrook was a no show at practice, the Eagles have signed RB PJ Thomas from the Saints practice squad. This is sign to some that the team has decided Brian Westbrook will probably not play this weekend, even though the team has not officially ruled him out yet. If he doesn't play, rookie LeSean McCoy is in line for the start.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Westbrook suffered a fairly severe concussion Monday night, as he was knocked out cold for nearly a minute. That, and the increased awareness regarding concussions, leads me to believe the Eagles will err on the side of caution with Westy and give him an extra week off to be sure he is OK. I doubt the Eagles will commit one way or another until Sunday, so expect a dreaded game-time decision. As for PJ Thomas, he is nothing but roster fill until Westy can come back, so I wouldn't look to add him in even the deepest of leagues.
According to Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald, Panthers HC John Fox said he is sticking with Jake Delhomme as his starting QB.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It is not as if John Fox has a choice right now. Delhomme's extension in the offseason struck just about everyone as curious for this very reason - Delhomme has devolved into a bad QB and it won't get better any time soon. Like the Dirtdogs, I expect the Cardinals defense to eat the Panthers passing game up this weekend.
North End Dirtdogs: He'll probably be on a short leash, but it looks like Delhomme can add to his league leading INT total on Sunday. I don't expect Delhomme to turn it around anytime soon as it looks like he's completely lost it as a capable QB, so AJ Feeley and Matt Moore might get their chance soon. They can't be any worse, can they? For Steve Smith's value, I hope not. Arizona is a great DEF play this week if you need a fill in.
Amid reports earlier in the day that Redskins TE Chris Cooley was done for the season, Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting Cooley could be back on the field in four weeks. According to the story on ProFootballTalk. com, Cooley saw a foot specialist and he has determined the broken bone in Cooley's ankle is not displaced, meaning the injury is less severe than first thought. More definitive information will be known after Cooley has surgery later this week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Hold the phones! With conflicting reports coming in, it is probably wise to hold Cooley (if you have the roster space) until more is known about his prognosis. His owners will still need to find a TE to fill the void, and Fred Davis may be that guy in larger leagues.
According to beat writer Rick Maese via his Twitter account, Redskins TE Chris Cooley broke his ankle in Monday night's game vs. Philadelphia and is almost certainly out for the season, although no formal decision has been made by the team yet.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The injuries were flying Monday night, none worse than Cooley. A broken ankle is a tough one to come back from quickly, so I wouldn't expect him back prior to the season's end. Even if they decide not to IR him, he'll be no help to most fantasy teams. Cooley owners in seasonal leagues should drop him and look for other options - and at this point Fred Davis may be the only decent choice in larger leagues. Davis posted very good numbers in Monday night's contest, grabbing 8 passes for 78 yards and a TD.
According to NFL.com, Chiefs RB Larry Johnson has been suspended indefinitely for comments he made via his Twitter account. He supposedly ridiculed head coach Todd Haley and used gay slurs when speaking with media in the locker room. The Chiefs released a statement regarding the situation, stating, "The Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League are continuing to investigate the alleged comments made by Larry Johnson. Until that review is complete, the Chiefs have instructed Larry to refrain from practicing with the Chiefs or participating in other team activities. A decision regarding Larry’s status will be made once the investigation has concluded."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: We've been down this road before with Larry, so it is obvious he does not get it in spite of his apology where he claims to want to be "a better role model". The words ring hollow and I suspect even if he returns, his starting job has been lost for the season. And let's be honest, he may never get another real chance considering his age, attitude and underperformance. His owners have no choice but to hold him until a decision by the Chiefs comes down, but at this point he is dead weight on rosters.
Eagles RB Brian Westbrook suffered a concussion on Monday night during the Eagles' Week 7 match-up against the Redskins. Before getting injured, Westbrook rushed the football for 13 yards on just three carries - Rookie LeSean McCoy replaced the injured Westbrook and rushed for 37 yards on 14 carries.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Westbrook was injured in the first quarter after taking a knee to the head. It's unclear if Westy will be ready for the team's Week 8 match-up against the Giants. Keep checking back with us on this one -- If LeSean McCoy gets the start in Week 8, he is a decent fantasy RB2. Again, keep checking back with us on Westy's health, he could improve rather quickly.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Jets WR Braylon Edwards was charge with misdemeanor assault in connection with an incident outside a downtown Cleveland nightclub earlier this year. Edwards faces up to six months in jail with this charge.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Gambler: The Jets knew this might be coming when they traded for him. Honestly losing him and his two drops a game isn't going to hurt that team much. Braylon has done a few "boneheaded" things in his time but this whole incident may take the prize.
According to Yahoo Sports, Chiefs RB Larry Johnson ripped HC Todd Haley, his team, and the fans of Kansas City via his Twitter account following Sunday's loss.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: Looks like LJ is trying to shoot his way out of KC during the season. I guess he didn't notice that this tactic didn't work too well for both T.O. and Keyshawn in the past. I'm sure the Chiefs will suspend LJ indefinitely which will open the door for Jamaal Charles to earn more playing time.
According to multiple sources, including the Miami Herald, Will Allen, Miami starting CB, is out for the season with a torn ACL.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
kethnaab: For IDPers, this is a huge deal, as that means that both Sean Smith and Vontae Davis, the talented rookie corners for Miami, hold tremendous value for the rest of the season. They had been battling for the primary corner/nickel corner spots all season, but now they are both firmly entrenched as starters in the Miami defense. Of interest to non-IDPers is that Miami's run defense is tough as nails, but their pass defense is pretty soft. It just got softer.
According to Chron.com, Texans WR Andre Johnson suffered a chest injury in Week 7 against the 49ers.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: AJ was injured in the fourth quarter after catching a 44-yard pass. Johnson fell on the ball and coughed up blood before heading to the sideline and eventually to the hospital for X-rays. AJ did return to Reliant Stadium after the contest so that he could shower and dress. “They’re telling me it’s a chest contusion,” coach Gary Kubiak said. Be sure to check back with us later today for more on this. It's a bit too early to speculate, but it sounds like AJ will be ready for Week 8 at Buffalo.
JRMRRT: AJ was officially listed as day to day with a lung contusion. If he practices on or by Friday he should play.
According to reports, Jets RB Leon Washington, who fractured his fibula in Week 7 against the Raiders, may not be immediately placed on injured reserve. In the Week 7 match-up, Shonn Greene ran the football 19 times for 144 yards and 2TDs, while Thomas Jones ran the football 26 times for 121 yards and 1TD.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Washington will be hard pressed to get back before the playoffs, so if you own him, and if the Jets don't put him on IR right away, it's safe to say that he isn't worth a roster spot any longer in yearly leagues. What a game Shonn Greene had! This was against the Raiders, and the Jets just pounded the rock given how out of hand the game was, but Greene dynasty owners have to like what they saw today. Greene was one of our biggest preseason sleepers, but Thomas Jones' strong start has overshadowed Greene's presence in New York -- Until now. With Washington out of the picture, you can bet that Jones and Greene will both get touches moving forward, but expect Jones to continue to start. This isn't saying Greene won't eventually emerge as the starter this year, and of course he is the future of that Jets' rushing attack, but keep in mind that Jones did get 26 carries in this one... he is still the starter until he gets hurt or falters. Grab Greene in all redraft leagues, though, as he will be one of the best NFL back-up rushers in the league moving forward.
North End Dirtdogs: Reports from players say that Washington suffered a compound fracture so bad that the bone broke through his skin. Needless to say, he will not be back this season and it is possible that this could be a career threatening injury. Maybe the Jets will reconsider bringing back Thomas Jones next season, but Shonn Greene now gets his chance to shine.
According to the National Football Post, Raiders WR Chaz Schilens will make his debut in the lineup Sunday after breaking his foot earlier in the preseason. There were some questions about whether he would play today after reaggravating the injury in practice on Friday, but he now looks like a go.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: No one wants to see Schilens on the field more than JaMarcus Russell. Schilens should be able to help a real bad passing offense, but I'm not suggesting anyone plug him into the lineup just yet. Give it a week or so to see how Chaz has integrated into the offense before giving him the nod.
According to the Dallas Morning News, RB Felix Jones was able to go at full speed, without a knee brace, at Cowboys practice on Friday. And that was a first since hurting his knee back on October 28th. Said coach Wade Phillips, "I feel good about where Felix is, he looks fast. He's moved well, so I think he'll get back into his role, which could be quite a bit during the game."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: In addition to the coach's comments, I've read elsewhere that owner Jerry Jones believes that Tashard Choice has earned a role in this backfield even with Jones and Marion Barber fully healthy. What that means to this backfield rotation is anyone's guess, so use all of these guys with caution. A three-headed monster has emerged in Dallas and that is not good news for fantasy players.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, WR Anquan Boldin actually has a high ankle sprain, which is a more severe injury than the one originally reported. The original prognosis was that he would miss 3-4 weeks, but has been able to practice on a limited basis this week. Whether he will play or not is still up in the air, but Boldin is hopeful he can go.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: While it is nice to hear he has practiced some this week, I'd be very surprised if Boldin is a go after hearing he has a high ankle sprain. Keep a close eye on his status if you own him, and be prepared with a backup plan if he is a no-go Sunday.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, WR Chaz Schilens was unable to finish practice on Friday and will be questionable for this Sunday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: Not good news for the only sleeper to come out of Oakland. It is hard to imagine that you would be starting a wide receiver from the Raiders…but hey…you gotta live your life. Keep your eye on Chaz(what a great name), but keep your expectations low as he still has JaMarcus "throwing" him the ball.
According to the NY Daily News, Jets WR Jerricho Cotchery will not make the west coast trip to play the Raiders. Head coach Rex Ryan has decided to give Cotchery some extra time to heal in order to make sure the hamstring injury will not linger. "We don't want to make it worse. If we get a chance to get him 100 percent or near 100 percent that is probably the best option." The Jets also announced WR Brad Smith will also not make the trip.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: In addition to Cotchery and Smith, Braylon Edwards has also been nursing an injury all week, so if he can't go the Jets will be down to David Clowney and Wallace Wright at WR. Needless to say, the Jets are very likely going to run the ball a lot this Sunday, so don't expect great stat lines out of that Jets passing game.
kethnaab: Perhaps Mark Sanchez will remember that Dustin Keller is a talented athlete, and he'll get some catchable targets.
According to Bengals.com, Chad Ochocinco missed Friday's practice with a hip injury. However, it is not considered serious and he is expected to play on Sunday vs. Chicago.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: It sounds as if the injury is not serious and he was just being held out as a precaution with a tight hip. Feel free to continue using Ochocinco as the top 10-15 WR status he has returned to. Its good to see him back!
According to the Boston Globe, RB Sammy Morris did not travel with the Patriots to London, and it is assumed the knee injury he suffered in week 6 was the reason. In his place, Laurence Maroney is expected to get the start with Fred Taylor still out with an ankle injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Maroney had a great game last week against the Titans, but if we are being honest, just about anyone who got playing time in that game did well. Still, Maroney makes a very nice play this week against a horrific Bucs defense that ranks 31st against the run, giving up an astounding 172 yards per game. Maroney is about as up and down as they come, but it's hard not to see him doing well this week, so expect near RB1 numbers.
According to reports, 49ers RB Frank Gore (ankle, foot) practiced in full on Wednesday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: The 49ers face the Texans in Week 7, so expect Gore to have a nice outing. The 49ers rank 24th against the run this season and have surrendered 10 rushing touchdowns so far. Assuming he can handle a full workload, Gore should have no problem racking up 100 total yards and a score. On a side note, check out our most recent Matt Forte Player Spotlight... we just pulled off a monster dynasty league trade using Frank Gore as trade bait... obviously Matt Forte was involved, but the trade details are in Forte's most recent Player Spotlight. We like Gore moving forward, so you can only imagine how much more we like Forte. Check it out!
According to reports, Saints RB Pierre Thomas is not on the Saints' injury report for Week 7.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Mike Bell is stealing goal line work and regular carries from Thomas, and Thomas is seeing less targets in the team's passing game as well. That said, is Thomas' value really on the decline? I say no. I suggest that fantasy owners take a stab at trading for the runner. The Dolphins are actually ranked No. 3 against the run, so this Week 7 match-up isn't an easy one, but it's only a matter of time (maybe 1 week) before fantasy worlds start seeing Thomas as a guaranteed 100 total yards and a score. Take advantage of the doubters in your league.
kethnaab: This is pretty good news for Pierre Thomas owners, but that offense is still tough to figure. Thomas and Bell had the same # of carries, but PT actually had 6 red zone rushing attempts compared to 2 for Bell. Bell looked like a monster in the first game this season, he looked decent in his 2nd game, and in his first game back from injury, he looked poor, rushing for 34 yards on 15 carries, as compared to 72 yards on 15 carries for PT. Miami has been stingy against the run all season, however, with no RB rushing for more than 44 yards and only Thomas Jones and Donald Brown scoring on the ground. PT is still a solid option as an RB2, in my opinion.
According to CBSSports.com, Indianapolis S Bob Sanders might be ready to play in his first game of the year after having knee surgery.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: This is good news for the Colts defense….he will give them a little more of a presence against the run. It just remains to be seen if he will stay healthy or not, or for how long he plays in the game. He might not be the best of plays in an IDP league…but he makes the Colts DST a sneaky play this week against a really bad St. Louis team.
According to the Raiders website, WR Chaz Schilens has recovered from a foot injury and is expected to suit up for his first action of the season against the Jets on Sunday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Remember Chaz? He was having a pretty good preseason for himself and had emerged as JaMarcus Russell's go-to guy way back in August. That all changed when he suffered a foot injury and he has not seen action since that first preseason game where he caught 5 passes for 52 yards. He's back on the radar and he is worth a waiver pickup if you are looking to roster a WR with some upside down the stretch. Though I'd hold off on plugging him into your lineup until we see some life out of that Raider passing game.
According to the Boston Herald, the Patriots got some bad news regarding their rookie WR today, as it was learned that Julian Edelman has a broken arm and will be out indefinitely.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This is bad news for the Patriots and his fantasy owners as Edelman was having a pretty good season for himself. I'd expect at least a two month recovery window, but without any other information to go on it is pure speculation on my part. Either way, this won't hurt that Patriot passing offense all that much with Moss and Welker at full strength, depth would be the concern. With Joey Galloway getting cut today (weird in light of this news), Sam Aiken looks like the no. 3 right now.
North End Dirtdogs: With the trade deadline passing today, I wonder if the Patriots were trying to work on some deals for a WR. Such rumored deals included Kevin Curtis and a possible reunion with Deion Branch, but nothing ever materialized. With Edelman's injury and Galloway's release, they are now really thin at WR. Special teams ace Sam Aiken and rookie Brandon Tate now move up on the depth chart.
According to TRIB LIVE Sports, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has officially confirmed that Rashard Mendenhall has surpassed Willie Parker on the depth chart and is now the Steelers' starting RB.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Mike Tomlin said that Mendenhall has the hot hand and they will go with him. Willie Parker will be relegated to a change of pace back while Moore should be in on two minute offense situations.
According to Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, WR Michael Crabtree will assume the starting role previously held by WR Josh Morgan.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: Wow! That was fast! Morgan really seemed to have potential and is now third on the depth chart. This is not 100% official, but it appears that this move is imminent. I don't see how Crabtree can make that much of an impact as he has missed all of training camp and the first quarter of the season. I would check your waiver wire to make sure that he is not available and to scoop him up if you can...especially in dynasty/keeper leagues. He does have the talent to become a legit number one in the NFL, but probably not this year.
According to Fort-Worth Star Telegram, WR Miles Austin has been promoted to the starting lineup for the Cowboys after a breakout game in week 5, replacing Patrick Crayton.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Crayton has had plenty of time to show his wares, but just has not gotten it done when he needed to. Miles had a monster game in week 5 and that sealed Crayton's fate. Despite the change, that whole Cowboys team is a bit overrated in my opinion, so I don't see a huge difference in what they will do on the field. To me Austin is still not necessarily an every week fantasy starter unless he can score consistently, but he makes a nice flex player with some upside.
JRMRRT: Austin has three things that Roy Williams does not have; speed, burst and separation, all of which TO did have. Tony Romo will use Austin the same way he used TO IMO and it will not take long before Austin is the Cowboys' #1 WR.
North End Dirtdogs: This move should also be seen as any last hope for getting production out of Roy Williams. If Austin can help free up some of the defensive coverage, they Roy could see some increased looks. However, it my be false hope as he couldn't produce much with Calvin Johnson across from him in DET.
According to the Cardinals website, tests on WR Anquan Boldin's injured ankle did not reveal any broken bones. Coach Ken Whisenhunt says there won't be much more known about Boldin's status for their upcoming game against the Giants until later in the week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Over the last few years, Boldin has missed a handful of games due to injury, and it looks like we might be going down that road again. Stayed tuned for more updates throughout the week, but it looks like he will be a gametime decision unless this injury is worse than the Cardinals are letting on.
According to the Sacremento Bee, RB Frank Gore is expected to put in a full practice this week without limitations.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: For all Gore owners, this is great news as it sounds like he will be ready to roll against the soft Houston run defense this Sunday. I still think that when healthy, Gore could put up top 5 RB numbers the rest of the way. Glenn Coffee filled in decently, but will return to a backup role.
According to EastValleyTribune.com, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 6. Boldin caught 6 passes on Sunday for 54 yards and zero scores. Larry Fitzgerald pulled in 13 passes for 100 yards and 1TD -- Kurt Warner passed for 276 yards and 2TDs (1INT) in the Week 6 match-up.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Boldin did not finish the game, but he reportedly believes that he will be good to go for Week 7 against the New York Giants. A high ankle sprain could put Boldin out a couple weeks, but it sounds like the sprain isn't as bad as initially feared, and it might not end up being a high ankle sprain after all. Keep checking back with us on this one. Steve Breaston, who caught 7 passes for 77 yards and 1TD in Week 6, will see increased value if Boldin is forced to sit a game or two.
According to StarTribune.com, Vikings RB Adrian Peterson twisted his left ankle against the Ravens in Week 6. "I was in some pain," Peterson said. "It wasn't broken or anything. Right now, it's feeling real good."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: The injury occurred in the fourth quarter, but it doesn't appear to be that serious. Monitor Peterson's health all week, but he should be fine.
According to reports, Rams WR Donnie Avery left Sunday's Week 6 game against the Jaguars with a bruised hip. According to reports, his return is doubtful.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Avery grabbed a 17-yard touchdown before leaving the contest. Avery is a top 15 fantasy wide receiver stuck in one of the worst fantasy environments in the league. Until the Rams turn things around, which won't likely be this season, it's going to be tough for Avery to produce and live up to expectations. Hopefully the receiver will be fine, but even so, Avery isn't even a solid fantasy WR3 in that offense. On a somewhat good note, the lack of receiving options in St. Louis could mean more receptions for Steven Jackson -- Jackson doesn't get a grip of carries when that offense is playing from behind, so Jackson owners will take anything they can get.
According to reports, Giants RB Brandon Jacobs left Sunday's Week 6 game against the Saints with a "stinger."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Jacobs walked off the field under his own power after taking a hit to the knee. Expect to see even more of Ahmad Bradshaw today, even if Jacobs returns to action. While Jacobs was sidelined, Bradshaw ran in a score from 10 yards out. Bradshaw is turning into a low-end fantasy RB2. Will Jacobs' value rebound at any point this season? Get on our FFX Forums and debate this one!
According to AZCentral.com, the Cardinals' coaching staff worked rookie RB Chris Wells in on more three-receiver sets this week in practice. "I do feel more comfortable with Beanie," Whisenhunt said. "I just have to wait my time, and they (coaches) know when I'm ready," Wells said. "I definitely think I'm ready. They don't think so, I guess. I don't know."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Buy-low! Beanie Wells will breakout soon and he will be near impossible to acquire via trade in dynasty leagues once he gets going. If healthy, Wells could turn into a top five fantasy runner of the future. For more on Wells and all the rookies from this 2009 draft class, check out our most recent rookie rankings article.
X: Smitty is right, Wells is a stud waiting to happen, so if you have any inclination to buy low, do it while you still can.
According to ESPN.com, DE Gaines Adams has been traded to the Chicago Bears for a second round draft pick.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: Gaines Adams has been a underachiever in his short career in Tampa. Hopefully the change of scenery will do him good. The Buccaneers got a second round pick and a cap hit of $11 mill this year and $4 mill next year...hope it was worth it.
According to The Pittsburg Post-Gazette, Pittsburg Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall was back at practice Friday and will get the start after missing practice Thursday with flu like symptoms.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: The report also said that Mendenhall looked just as good as he did in his previous two games which is good news as the Browns are a very good match-up for Mendenhall. The Browns rank 32 against the run, which is dead last, so Mendenhall should be started in all leagues.
According to reports, Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (Achilles) returned to practice in full on Thursday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Stewart is a solid flex-option from here on out, especially in Week 6 against the Bucs. Tampa Bay is 28th against the run this year and surrenders close to 153 yards per game on the ground. Stewart's upside doesn't take away from DeAngelo Williams' upside, though. Not everyone here at FFX shares this opinion, but I think DeAngelo is one of the best buy-low candidates for Weeks 6-16. Invest before it's too late. For more on this topic, check out our Week 6 Start and Bench Advice. I talk about this in detail.
X: I suggest a wait-and-see approach with Stewart. To this point he has done very little on the field, most likely due to that Achilles injury he has been dealing with since the offseason began. Tough to trust him in your lineup right now, so unless you have no other options, I'd look in another direction.
According to ESPN, RB Correll Buckhalter (ankle) practiced in full on Thursday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Buckhalter (ankle) claims to be roughly 90 percent healthy, but his Week 6 status won't likely be known until Saturday. Either way, Moreno should remain the starter and play well all the way through to Week 16. Next year, Moreno could be a top 15 overall pick (or higher) in redraft leagues. Hopefully he stays healthy.
According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, RB Mike Bell is now completely healthy after the Saints bye, and is ready to resume whatever role the coaches have in store for him. In fact, all three of the Saints runners are healthy, and that could mean a timeshare between Bell and teammate Pierre Thomas with Bush more of a pass catching specialist. "It just means we have more weapons, more things for a defense to watch out for." Bell said, "However Coach wants it. He's a smart guy. He knows better (who should be on the field) than we know. I'm going to trust him, same as I have all year. I'm just happy to be out there."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: We already know Bush's role in the offense, that will change little when it comes to how these guys will be used. The real question is what will happen with Bell and Thomas now that both are healthy for the first time this season. Both guys have run hard and been impressive during their time as starters, so it looks like this will be a split that won't necessarily favor either back. Sounds more like situation and effectiveness will be the deciding factor and that is a fluid thing determined during the course of a game. As for this week, that Giants run defense is pretty solid, but I don't know that it is a foregone conclusion the Saints won't be able to run. When you have a passing offense lead by Brees, it automatically opens up the run game, and the Giants could be in for a long day. Especially with two capable backs in the rotation staying fresh for 4 quarters.
Steelers RB Willie Parker (toe) returned to practice in full on Wednesday.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: All indications point to Rashard Mendenhall keeping the starting gig in Pittsburgh moving forward. That kind of goes without saying, but many do wonder how much FWP will play now that he is back in action. Most reports, built off mere speculation I might add, suggest that Mendy will get twice as many carries as FWP moving forward - It's safe to say that Mendy is still a very solid fantasy RB2 moving forward.
JRMRRT: Reports say that Parker will wear a protective shoe; good luck being "Fast Willie" in that. If you were the coach, would you play a 209lb, 28 year old RB with lots of miles and turf toe, or a 22 year old, 225lb stud running the way that Mendy is? Easy choice for me. Parker has also said that he is not even sure that he will play in week six so I say get Mendy into your line-ups as he has a very nice match-up against the Browns.
According to NJ.com, Jets WR Braylon Edwards was extremely impressive during Jets' practice on Wednesday. “He put on another show out there,” coach Rex Ryan said after Wednesday’s practice. “Oh my goodness. It’s ridiculous. It’s like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ Shouldn’t we put a red (non-contact) jersey on him? Like, let’s not touch this guy.”
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is all too good to be true for those that stood by the once struggling receiver. Even we got a little down on the guy, and that's saying a lot considering he has never really dropped all that far on our rankings this season. This move to New York will turn Edwards' career around, and Mark Sanchez is only going to get better with every game. This Jets team is so solid, I honestly wouldn't be shocked if they made it to a Super Bowl by next season. Also, don't forget that we're still very high on Shonn Greene for the future. The Jets traded up to the first pick on day two of the 2009 NFL Draft to get the rusher -- He is the future and he will be one solid fantasy runner once he finally lands the gig. Keep this in mind in dynasty formats and attack if the price is right.
JRMRRT: Lets not forget that a ball went right through his hands in the end zone in slow motion, on replay, over and over the other night. He definitely should have had that one and while he played much better, I would still like to see more in games before I get too excited. The Jets absolutely make Braylon a much more valuable fantasy WR going forward though.
QB Chad Henne looked like a seasoned veterean in his debut as a Dolphin, completing 20 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Henne's debut is all the more impressive when you consider he faced a Jets defense who shut down both Tom Brady and Drew Brees in recent weeks. It won't always be so rosy for Henne, he is still a young QB, but he is at least a viable fantasy option if you need a backup QB this season.
Joe Divola: Henne is a guy that I have been trying to acquire quietly this season by either trade or drafting. The Dolphins had vaguely stated that after this season, the team would be handed over to Henne and that Pennington would not be retained. Henne performed better than I expected Monday night, and the cat might be our of the proverbial bag. Due to Miami running the wildcat(barf) and their lack of a true WR1 the expectations for Henne should be rather limited....but he might end up being a Joe Flacco type of QB.
In Monday night football, WR Braylon Edwards caught 5 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown in his first action as a member of the Jets.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Edwards also had another TD reversed after review where he was called down inside the 1 yard line. Love him or hate him, there is no doubting his value is back on the rise after a very good debut with the Jets Monday night. As it stands now, he is solid WR3 with upside for more in any given week.
Joe Divola: Braylon "Clifford Franklin" Edwards will give me the night terrors until the day I die. He had a solid debut for the J-E-T-S...but with his ability, that should have been a cake walk. I would trade high on him and be thankful that he is off your team. I don't feel that he is worth the headache. He still has some off the field issues that need to be resolved and needs to work on the whole catching the ball thingy(which is important sometimes).
According to Bob Glauber of Newsday, Jets WR Jerricho Cotchery will be active Monday night against the Dolphins.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Good news if you were forced to use Cotchery in spite of the questionable tag. What role he will play remains to be seen - reports from earlier in the night suggested he did not look good in pregame warmups.
According to NFL.com, Lions head coach Jim Schwartz gave an update regarding Calvin Johnson's knee injury Monday and didn't seem concerned, saying "I wouldn’t label this significant right now." In spite of that good news, he gave no other details about Johnson's status for week 6.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Good news for Johnson owners, but without more details we probably won't know his status for week 6 until later in the week. Considering the Lions have a bye week 7, it is a good bet Johnson will sit week 6 unless the injury is extremely minor.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, the curious benching of WR Mike Sims-Walker just before gametime Sunday was due to a violation of team rules - more specifically the team itinerary. No additional information is being released and it looks as if the details will stay in-house between Sims-Walker and head coach Jack Del Rio.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: While this is a pretty unusual situation, it doesn't appear as if the punishment imposed will go beyond week 5, as other outlets are reporting that Sims-Walker is expected to play against the Rams next week. That won't make his owners feel any better, especially those who lost, but he is still a solid WR3 moving forward - with upside for more.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Browns rookie RB James Davis suffered a torn labrum to his shoulder when he was practicing in a drill without pads and a padded defender hit him. The NFL could be launching an investigation.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: A Cleveland Browns spokesperson said that the news was not true, but more than one player witnesses have validated the story. Supposedly, it was an "opportunity" drill held after practice and Davis was hit hard by a padded defender, resulting in the shoulder injury. I know Oakland gets all the headlines for being the model dysfunctional franchise, but Cleveland is not far behind. It's unfortunate news, as Davis had a chance to earn a significant role this season with an aging Jamal Lewis as the starter.
Falcons WR Roddy White pulled in eight catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns against the 49ers in Week 5.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: White was a great buy-low candidate heading into Week 5, but buying him cheap is no longer an option. White should continue to play like low-end fantasy WR1 moving forward, so don't sell thinking that he will cool off. Ryan should thrive down the stretch as well.
Cowboys WR Miles Austin pulled in 10 catches for 250 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys in Week 5. Austin overtime win over Kansas City.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Miles Austin was amazing in the overtime win and he pulled in the game-winning touchdown. He has always had that big-play ability, but consistency has been a problem so far during his young career. That should change, as the consistent opportunity is now present. For more on Austin and his value looking forward, check out his newest Player Spotlight. The Cowboys might just have a new number one WR. Move over Roy Williams?
According to MLive.com, Lions WR Calvin Johnson injured his knee on Sunday against the Steelers. Lions coach Jim Schwartz had this to say on the injury: "He hurt his knee. We'll see where it is. He couldn't go back in and finish. We tried to get a sleeve on it, we tried to get a brace on it and it was a situation where it was still possible -- if he could feel good with it -- we would've put him back in the game. We couldn't get him settled down and we couldn't get him comfortable."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Johnson will undergo tests later today. Hopefully the receiver will be fine - We will keep you informed!
According to ProFootballTalk.com, Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart is active for today's game in spite of the lingering Achilles injury he is battling.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Stewart is not worth a start today unless you are desperate - he figures to have a limited role in spite of being active.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, Daunte Culpepper will get the start for the Lions today with Matthew Stafford still ailing from a knee injury. The story also suggests Culpepper will also start next week going into the Lions week 7 bye.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If you are desperate, Culpepper is an option to get a warm body in your lineup - but don't expect much against the Steelers. For those worried about Calvin Johnson, I'd leave him in your lineup unless you have a better option. Give us a shout in the forums if you are unsure!
According to reports, Cowboys RB Felix Jones (knee) did not travel with the Cowboys to Kansas City and the runner is not expected to play in Week 5. Marion Barber has been unrestricted in three straight practices and is ready for Week 5.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: The Cowboys have a bye in Week 6, so Jones is expected to return to action during Week 7. That's if all goes well with his knee. Jones could get dropped in some yearly leagues, so consider scooping him up if you have a roster spot to burn. As for Week 5, expect Marion Barber to get a majority of the work against the Chiefs. Tashard Choice will still get touches in this one, but Barber is a safe bet for 15+ carries and most of the goal line work. Buy Barber on the cheap if you can swing a last minute deal - He is still a very strong fantasy RB2, but his recent injury and the temporary emergence of Choice has his owners sitting in fear heading into Week 5.
According to the Star-Ledger, the Giants will start Darcy Johnson at TE with Kevin Boss doubtful to play with an ankle injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Boss has not been very productive this season and is barely a TE3 in most leagues, so don't go running out to pick up Johnson.
According to the Oakland Tribune, Raiders TE Zach Miller looks ready to be in the starting lineup Sunday in spite of being listed as questionable. He had suffered a concussion, but passed all required tests needed to get back on the field.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: It is hard to suggest using an offensive player for Oakland, but Miller still has the talent to put up good numbers in spite of JaMarcus Russell.
According to the Dallas Morning News, WR Roy Williams is doubtful to play this weekend due to the bruised ribs he suffered in week 4. Although he has pushed to play, he has not practiced all week and coach Wade Phillips says the injury is still not healed enough. In his place, the Cowboys plan to start Miles Austin - it will be his first career start. "I'm just ready to go out and execute and take it on," Austin said.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Roy Williams didn't even travel with the team, so he will sit Week 5. Austin Miles is a decent start if you're desperate at the wide receiver position heading into Week 5. This is a Tough break for Williams owners, as the receiver has been nothing but disappointing so far this season. It doesn't feel like any of that is going to change either.
X: I expect Tony Romo and that passing game to have a good day against the Chiefs. While Romo can be maddening at times, he does his best work against bad teams, so Austin is a good start this week.
According to EPSN, Patriots running back Fred Taylor will have surgery to repair his injured ankle. Although it is not expected to sideline him for the rest of the season, Taylor is expected to miss a significant amount of time. Sammy Morris and Laurence Maroney are likely to pick up the slack while Taylor is out.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: With Taylor out, Maroney and/or Morris are worth taking a shot on, but I wouldn't expect a whole lot as the Patriots tend to use a rotation at the position.
North End Dirtdogs: Take it from someone who has seen almost every snap of Maroney's career...stay away as he has never lived up to his rookie hype. He dances too much and if Taylor didn't get hurt, there was talk that he could have been inactive for certain games. If you are desperate for RB production, then I'd rather roll the dice on Sammy Morris over Maroney. Kevin Faulk could also see some added production especially in PPR leagues. You want a deep sleeper: BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Morris is an older RB and cannot stay healthy and Maroney is averaging 2.9 YPC. Green-Ellis runs hard and could work himself into early down work and he had some success last season when thrust into active duty.
According to The St. Petersburg Times, Tampa Bay Buc RB Cadillac Williams has received a vote of confidence from offensive coordinator Greg Olson who said it was time to commit to him as an every down player.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: The Bucs like what they are seeing out of Cadillac Williams and it might be time to get him into your line-up. Olson said that Caddy has improved his pass protection, route running and catching ability and is to be used as a three down back going forward. While this is good news for Williams, it does not bode so well for Derrick Ward who is nothing more than a change of pace back at this time. With Earnest Graham's inability to stay healthy, Williams is probably the only RB worth owning in Tampa.
North End Dirtdogs: For a guy who has had two major knee surgeries, let's see how Caddy holds up being a full-time back. Something tells me that Derrick Ward will work himself back into fantasy relevance this season once he is recovered from injury.
According to the Associated Press, RB Willie Parker feels that he might not be able to play this Sunday in Detroit due to his turf toe.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Parker is almost guaranteed to be a scratch against the Lions, and in light of how Mendy played this past Sunday night, we may never see Parker start another game for the Steelers. If you own Mendy, start him with confidence this week.
Joe Divola: If FWP sits out the game this week, Rashard Mendenhall could be in line for a great game against the Lions. It is still early in the week, but this situation bears watching as Mendy could drop some gaudy stats against Detroit(as long as Tomlin does not put him in time out again).
According to ProFootballTalk.com, the Browns have traded WR Braylon Edwards to the Jets for an undisclosed draft pick and linebacker Jason Trusnick. Jay Glazer is reporting that Chansi Stuckey is involved with the deal as well and is now a Brown. More details will surely follow.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: I love this move for the Jets, a future Super Bowl contender. The Edwards that we saw back in 2007 could emerge once again. For more on Edwards' value moving forward, check out my newest Braylon Edwards Player Spotlight.
X: Wow. Edwards is an immense talent and if he can develop a rapport with Sanchez, he might be able to turn his career around in New York. Edwards value just shot up a bunch... and the opposite just happened to Stuckey if he is, indeed, part of this deal.
JRMRRT: I hope the Jets invested in a fifty-five gallon drum of stickum for Edwards' hands because he still can not catch. Maybe Rex Ryan can bully him into turning his career around but if he had off the field issues in Cleveland, just imagine what will happen in a city like NY.
According to NBCsports, 49ers WR Michael Crabtree has agreed to a six year deal.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Insiders Jay Glazer and Adam Schefter have both confirmed that Crabtree has indeed signed a six year dear that could forfeit to a five year deal if Crabtree does not hit a specified production quota. This is great news for those of you in dynasty and keeper leagues that drafted Crabtree and had enough patience to hang on to him.
According to multiple sources, #10 overall draft pick Michael Crabtree has agreed to terms with the 49ers. It is believed to be a six-year deal.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: Better late than never as Crabtree was running out of leverage due to the great start by the 49ers. He is supposedly not in football shape and has a long way to go to work himself into the offense. I would not expect much from his this season, but he remains a great dynasty prospect.
According to Bill Williamson of ESPN.com, Denver Bronco RB Correll Buckhalter could miss a week or two with a high ankle sprain opening up the door for Knowshon Moreno to carry a much bigger load in week five against the Patriots.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Time to see what Moreno has now and hope he shows up as Mendenhall did. While Buckhalter is out, Moreno should be used as a three down work-horse back, which was what he was drafted to be. Lamont Jordan will see some more time as well, but not enough to keep Moreno on the side lines for very long. However, McDaniels is a Belichik desciple so I could be totally wrong here as well.
According to CBSSports.com, the league is investigating WR Braylon Edwards after a report of an altercation outside of a nightclub Sunday night.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: This is not good news for Braylon. He has had conduct issues in the past and is not performing on the field. He has not been charged with anything as of yet, but that may not matter. Keep an eye out for a possible suspension and keep an eye on Mohamed Massaquoi. Odds are good that Massaquoi may never repeat this past performance, but Anderson really seemed to lock in on him during the game as he was targeted 13 times(7 of which were deep balls) against a solid Cincinnati secondary.
JRMRRT: Rodger Godell could come down on Edwards, but I'm pretty sure his hands were already suspended for life last year so if the rest of him joins them, it should not really matter too much. The major problem with Braylon is that he is a wide receiver that can not catch. Hopefully if you are an Edwards owner you have already found a replacement for him; if not this is something to watch.
According to the Contra Costa Times, Darren McFadden will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, and is expected to miss at least 2-4 weeks.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: Can things get any worse in Oakland? Believe it or not, but they could if HC Tom Cable gets suspended! Michael Bush and Justin Fargas would seem to have more value, but Oakland has no passing game and the schedule gets brutal for the next couple of weeks. With the mess that's going on with the team, I'd stay away from all Oakland players for the foreseeable future except in dynasty formats. I still think DMac and Bush have the skills to be good to great NFL RBs, but they may never reach that potential as look as Oakland is a trainwreck.
According to Calvin Watkins of ESPN.com who covers the Dallas Cowboys, WR Roy Williams is doubtful for this Sunday with three bruised ribs and some cartilage damage.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Here we go again. Obviously it is early and things could change, but if you go by Williams' history he probably will not play. There will certainly be much more information this week but for now I would plan on being without Roy Williams.
According to Jay Glazer, via his Twitter account, Cowboys RB Marion Barber "will start today" but Tashard Choice is expected to receive an "increased workload" in the Week 4 match-up against the Broncos.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Barber is still a decent play, unless you have much safer alternatives in waiting. If your options are between Marion Barber and Tashard Choice, you have yourself a little dilemma. If Barber is starting, it's tough to sit him, but Barber could start and still only get 10 carries vs Choice's 15. Keep checking back with us, but Choice seems like the safer move if you have to decided between the two. Hopefully Barber is back and fully ready for his next match-up.
According to reports, Redskins RB Clinton Portis (calf, ankle) is active for Week 4 and will play against the Bucs.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: We advised everyone to avoid Portis this season, as we feared this was his season of decline. We don't see Portis turning it around either. Betts could get more carries moving forward. Sell Portis now if you still can. He could have some decent games here and there, but his risk for injury is great given his career carries.
According to reports, Lions RB Kevin Smith is active and in the Lions' line-up for Sunday's match-up against the Bears.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Smith has a tough match-up, but at least he is active.
According to Fantasyfootballchamps.com, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker is listed as doubtful and will miss the week four game against the San Diego Chargers. Parker did not participate in practice all week because of a turf toe injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Time to see what Rashard Mendenhall can do as reports are saying that he will get the start. If he produces well, he should at least split carries evenly with Parker when he returns. Mewelde Moore will also benefit from Parker's absence and both Mendenhall and Moore should be good starts this week as #3 RBs or flex starts.
Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune believes the Saints will try to negate the pass rush of the Jets by getting RB Reggie Bush into open space with a lot of quick hits and screen plays. In his opinion, this is a match up problem for the Jets and will lead to some big gains on offense.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I tend to agree with the author that the Saints gameplan should and will include a bigger dose of Bush in the short passing game - and with Drew Brees' ability to read defenses, it is one which should be successful. Thus far, Reggie Bush is exactly what we thought he was - an RB2 in PPR formats. Expect more of the same this week, with a larger-than-usual stat line in the receptions department.
JRMRRT: This could be good news for Bush, but what happens on running plays when Bush is out and Thomas is in? It seems like both will need to be in the game together to make this happen but I think Rex Ryan will see this coming and have a game plan for it. I expect the Saints to throw the ball down field early and often and with Revis locked on to Colston; look for Devery Henderson to possibly have a big game.
According to Matt Mosley of ESPN.com, RB Tashard Choice is going to receive the majority of the carries, even though RB Marion Barber is going to play.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: To this point in the season, the Broncos are the number one ranked defense in the league. Is it because they are that good, or is it a product of their schedule? We'll find out this week as they face one of the better offenses in the league. In spite of this article, I expect the split between Barber and Choice to be split pretty evenly to start, but it is one of those things that could change as the game goes on. The hot hand could win out down the stretch - who that will ultimately be is up for debate. I consider Choice an RB3 with upside this week, but it hard to give him a full blessing while splitting carries against a good defense on the road.
Joe Divola: Tashard was a hot pickup this week off of the waiver wire, and it is looking like he will pay off for those of you lucky to get him. He put up solid numbers last year when he was the starter, against some good teams. I would expect the same from him this week.
JRMRRT: To answer X's question; it's a product of their schedule. It is not to hard to be rated #1 in defense when your only opponents have been the Bengals, the Browns and the Raiders. I think both Barber and Choice could put up at least 75 yards and a TD each minimum.
According to a tweet by Adam Schefter of ESPN, Browns rookie RB James Davis has been placed on injured reserve by the Browns, ending his season. To take his place on the roster, RB Chris Jennings was signed from the practice squad.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Davis was a favorite preseason sleeper of mine, so this comes as a bit of a shock. Appears the shoulder injury he had was worse than anyone thought. With Jamal Lewis still ailing, and very little depth at the position, all of a sudden Jerome Harrison is the RB to own in Cleveland.
According to the Washington Post, Redskins RB Clinton Portis took no reps in practice all week with a calf injury and is listed as questionable on the injury report. Portis himself seems willing to deal with the pain and play on Sunday, but he knows that ultimately the decision is not his. If he does not play, the Redskins will use a combination of Ladell Betts and Marcus Mason; both split reps with the first team in practice this week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: I don't think Portis is a good play this week, even if he suits up against the 31st ranked run defense of the Bucs. As I stated in my start/bench piece, Portis showed very little against the Rams and Lions, so there is no reason to believe anything will change this week. As for Betts and Mason, use them with caution - it his hard to know how the reps will shake out if Portis does sit out.
According to reports, the Chargers are listing RB LaDainian Tomlinson as probable for Sunday after he missing the last two games with an ankle injury. He has been able to practice fully all week, so barring any setbacks he will return to his starting role in the lineup.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: This is good news for LT owners, but the unfortunate part is that he is returning in time to face the Steelers, a team giving up less than 80 yards rushing per game so far this season. With the byes upon us and injuries piling up, most owners may not have a choice but to play him, but if you have any comparable options, I would think about sitting LT this week.
According to Fantasyfootballchamps.com, Dallas coach Wade Phillips said that RB Marion Barber practiced in full Thursday and that Barber looked like he would be able to play Sunday to him.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Wade Phillips stated that Barber looked good during practice and that Barber himself said he felt good and was ready to go. Phillips also said that Barber was able to accelerate with the ball and that he was fine after practice. I think it is safe for Barber owners to get him back in their line ups this week. With Felix Jones sidelined, Marion Barber should see plenty of action.
According to buffalobills.com, RB Marshawn Lynch has been officially activated from the suspension list. He expected to split the carries evenly with RB Fred Jackson.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: There are reports that Marshawn will be eased back into the offense, but Dick Jauron said he could get as much as 50% of the workload starting this week at MIA. This should be an interesting situation to watch as Marshawn was being used as the starter during the preseason, but Jackson has certainly proved himself that he is starter material. However, Marshawn has proved he can be the workhorse and the coach staff has a little concern of wearing Jackson down. Either is a risky play this week with the potential split and against a tough MIA run defense. However, next week both are viable options against a terrible Browns defense.
According to a story on Cleveland.com, Browns WR Braylon Edwards is hopeful that he will get more looks downfield in the passing game now that Derek Anderson has been named the starting quarterback. "You know D.A., he's a guy who likes to throw the deep ball, likes to get the ball out. I like to run deep routes, so it's natural he'd look for me in those situations."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Braylon Edwards has been mediocre so far this year, with only one game worthy of his draft slot; a 6-92 performance against Denver. It remains to be seen whether the change to Derek Anderson will help, but it certainly can't get worse, right? Moving forward, Edwards is still a WR3 for me, but not one you can count on unless that old 2007 chemistry comes back with Anderson.
JRMRRT: This has to be good news for Edwards' owners as Derek Anderson and Braylon Edwards have had success before and things can only get better. The Browns are sure to take more shots down field to Edwards with Anderson under center. The only question is, can he catch the ball?
According to SI.com, RB Willie Parker is battling a turf toe injury and was absent from practice on Wednesday. "It's painful, but it's something I can deal with, so we'll take it day by day," Parker said. It is still unclear what Parker's status is for Sunday, but if he is unable to go Rashard Mendenhall would get the start.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Make no mistake, turf toe is a tough injury to have and still be productive - check the FFX injury dictionary for more information. Parker hasn't really been productive to this point anyway, and this won't help. If you own Parker, keep an eye on the news this week and be prepared to go with another option even if he plays.
According to the Chicago Tribune, HC Jim Swartz says that RB Kevin Smith will be a game-time decision for Sunday at the Chicago Bears.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Use Morris with caution this week should Kevin Smith sit. Chicago is a formidable defense against the run, giving up less than 95 yards per game on the ground - not a great matchup for an average RB like Morris.
North End Dirtdogs: Looks like Smith owners should be making backup plans this week. Maurice Morris would most likely be getting most of the work if Smith misses the game and makes for a decent option if you are really desperate with byes or injuries.
According to multiple sources who have spoken to ESPN, the Cowboys will be without RB Felix Jones this week when they face the Broncos in Denver. Jones suffered a sprained PCL in his left knee, and it is still not known how long it will keep him out of action. It also appears that regular starter Marion Barber will be a go for this weekend, although that has still not been confirmed by the team.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: According to the article, it appears Jones will probably be out through the Cowboys bye week, meaning he won't play again until week seven. And with Barber still ailing, Tashard Choice has suddenly become the guy to own in all formats. Choice will be the hot pickup of the week without a doubt, and if you can somehow snag him off the wire, he'll make a great play over the next several weeks as we work through the byes.
According to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, Glen Coffee will step into the starting RB role in place of injured Frank Gore and assume every down duties. According to the story, the team is very comfortable that Coffee can step into that role and the offense can operate as-is without much change.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The preseason phenom has not fared quite as well in real game action recently, only putting up modest numbers (25-for-54) last week filling in for Gore. But with upcoming games against the Rams and Falcons, Coffee should serve as a fine RB2 if you have the ability to add him to your team.
According to the Kansas City Star, Chiefs coach Todd Haley is already pessimistic about WR Dwayne Bowe's chances to start in week four. “Anytime you’re talking about a hamstring, especially with a skill position, you’ve got to err on the side of caution because those things can end up being a long-term thing if you’re not careful,” Haley said.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Negative statements from the head coach this early in the week do not bode well for Bowe starting in week 4. At this point it would be wise to assume Bowe will not play and to make any necessary moves in your league to fill the void.
According to a story on Yahoo! sports, the Chiefs traded QB Tyler Thigpen to the Dolphins in exchange for an undisclosed 2010 draft pick. The trade came on the heels of news about previous starter Chad Pennington suffering a season ending shoulder injury which landed him on the Dolphins IR earlier today.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: After adamantly stating they would not trade for a QB, the Dolphins did just that today. The move makes sense in keeping with the wildcat theme, and Thigpen will presumably back up starter Chad Henne. From a fantasy standpoint, Thigpen holds little fantasy value right now even in the deepest of leagues, seasonal or dynasty.
According to Adam Schefter, Cowboys RB Felix Jones could miss 2 weeks with a knee injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Other reports suggest that the head coach is "optimistic" Jones will play. Either way, it looks like Barber will be healthy enough to be back starting in week four, but check back during the week for more updates on these two.
North End Dirtdogs: One has to wonder if Felix should begin to be labeled with the "injury prone" tag as he has been injured a few times in his short career. With Marion Barber still nursing his quad injury, this could open the door for Tashard Choice, who produced well when injuries struck last season, for a large role in the Cowboys backfield.
According to Sportsgrumblings.com, San Fransisco 49ers RB Frank Gore will be out for three weeks with a foot and ankle injury he sustained in week three.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: Frank Gore sustained a strained right ankle and a sprained right hind foot Sunday against the Vikings. Hopefully all you Gore owners handcuffed him with Glen Coffee who should be a good start for the next two weeks with week 6 being the 49ers bye week. I wouldn't expect the numbers Coffee put up in the preseason, but he should be solid. Next week the 49ers face the Rams which will be a good match up for Coffee.
Updating an earlier report, Cowboys RB Marion Barber is inactive for tonight's game with Carolina. Felix Jones and Tashard Choice will both see action in his place.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If you left Barber in your lineup on the off chance he'd play, get him replaced ASAP.
According to DallasNews.com, Cowboys RB Marion Barber is "doubtful" to play tonight against the Panthers based on a comment by owner Jerry Jones. It is expected that Felix Jones will get the majority of the work at RB tonight in Barber's absence, with Tashard Choice rotating in to spell him.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Barber has not been made inactive as of yet, so there is still a slight chance he plays in spite of Jones' comment. That said, it doesn't look good, so it is probably time to get him out of your lineup and get Jones, Choice or even Jonathan Stewart in.
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Dolphins starting QB Chad Pennington has been lost for the season with a torn capsule in his shoulder. While he is expected to get a second opinon, it does not look like the prognosis will change much. The Dolphins are stating for the record that Chad Henne will assume the role of starter and Pat White will back him up.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Tough break for Pennington and the Dolphins. The Chad Henne era will now begin in earnest effective immediately instead of 2010. If you are in a dynasty league, Henne is definitely worth adding as he is assumed to be a pretty good prospect by most. Seasonal owners who are desparate might want to take a shot on Henne, but I wouldn't expect much especially early on. Should be interesting to see how this offense plays out the rest of the year - will we see more wildcat with Ronnie Brown and Pat White?
According to a tweet by Bernie Miklasz, Rams WR Laurent Robinson is out for the year with a broken bone in his leg.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Robinson was the Rams leading receiver through three weeks, so this is a sizeable blow to them. Hard to say who might step into that role, but one would hope Donnie Avery would be that guy.
According to the Denver Post, Brandon Marshall appears to have had an attitude change after coming off his best performance of the season.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: Winning usually makes all problems go away, but it was good to see Marshall actually have a good game after a slow start. He may not reach the 100+ catch mark again with Orton, but he is still the best WR on the Broncos and Orton seems to be getting more comfortable throwing to him. The price on acquiring Marshall will continue to rise, so now is the time to move if you want to take the risk on the WR.
Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew rushed the football 23 times for 119 yards (5.2) and three touchdowns during his Week 3 match-up against the Texans. MJD also pulled in four passes for 28 yards in the contest.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Wow. What a game for MJD owners. It was nice to see him have that MONSTER game. MJD is a top 5RB moving forward and buying him low will be almost impossible at this point.
Saints RB Pierre Thomas ran the football just 14 times in Week 3, but racked up an impressive 126 yards and two touchdowns on those limited touches.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is why I've advised so many to buy-low on Thomas. Now it's too late. Bell is a good running back, but Thomas is five times better and that showed on his minimal carries. Great work if you were able to buy-low like advised -- The Pierre Show has begun.
North End Dirtdogs: I listened to HC Sean Payton on Sirius NFL Radio this morning and he said that the reason Lynell Hamilton started the game and got the early TD was because Thomas was sick with a stomach bug the night before and actually needed an IV before and during the game. Payton seemed pleased that Thomas was back on the field and hopefully he can remain healthy to be the stud back we all expect him to be.
According to Matt Maiocco's Twitter account, 49ers RB Frank Gore has an ankle "strain" and not a high-ankle sprain. Other early reports are suggesting Gore could be out at least two weeks with the injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Glen Coffee will likely start Week 4 and could very well start Week 5. It's almost too early to start predicting such things, but the 49ers have a bye in Week 6, so it's very possible that Gore gets some rest going into that week off. Stay tuned, things change quickly in this league, and again we're merely speculating as we wait for more concrete reports to surface.
North End Dirtdogs: Its a shame for Gore owners as the schedule gets much softer for the next couple of weeks and Gore could have had some huge games. Hopefully Gore owners were able to grab Coffee this offseason. Let's hope Gore's ankle is not of the "high sprain" variety.
49ers RB Frank Gore left Sunday's Week 3 game against the Vikings after aggravating his ankle injury. Gore left in the first quarter and went to the locker room on a cart.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Gore limped off the field and then limped around on the sidelines for a few minutes. He was carted to the locker room sitting upright and Glen Coffee is now in the game as the team's starter. Coffee was injured after taking a hit to the knee, but Coffee did return to action. We will keep you updated on Gore, but it doesn't appear he will be back on the field today. Hopefully Gore will be fine, but we will have to keep you posted.
According to reports, Eagles QB Donovan McNabb (ribs) is inactive for Sunday's Week 3 match-up against the Chiefs.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: The Eagles have a bye week in Week 4 so the Eagles most likely decided to give McNabb two more weeks of rest. He should be back in Week 5. Kevin Kolb will once again start, but Vick will be used often. He could be rusty, but this is a good match-up for Vick to get his feet wet. Honestly, even though this is Vick's first game back, I think that he will show flashes of amazing in today's game.
According to reports, Redskins RB Clinton Portis and Redskins QB Jason Campbell are both active for Sunday's Week 3 match-up against the Lions.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Not many of us here at FFX were high on Clinton Portis this season, in fact most of us advised that fantasy owners avoid him in August drafts unless he fell to absolute bargain value. If you own him, try to sell him after a big game. He has a nice match-up today and could crank out solid numbers.
According to a report on the NFL Network, Patriots WR Wes Welker is inactive for today's game against the Falcons. This will be his second straight missed game.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Not a big surprise as Welker missed last week's game as well. Between the rain and Welker being inactive, it could be another long day for Brady.
According to a twitter report by Josh Looney, WR Dwayne Bowe is inactive for today's game.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Not only should Bowe be out of your lineup, but Matt Cassel should be to. I don't expect a lot of offense out of KC today.
According to a report on the NFL Network, Eagles starting RB Brian Westbrook is inactive today.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If you have Westbrook in your lineup - get him out. If you smartly drafted rookie LeSean McCoy to back him up, now is the time to get him in your lineup unless you have a better option.
According to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, RB Jamal Lewis is doubtful to play Sunday after missing his third straight practice Friday. If he can't go, the Browns will likely use a combination of Jerome Harrison and rookie James Davis in the backfield.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Even if you owned Lewis, you'd want to find another option considering the Browns face the Ravens this week. This is also good news for Davis owners as he will get a chance to show what he can do against one of the best run defenses around. I wouldn't start him mind you, but it bears watching.
According to Jay Glazer on Twitter, Matt Hasselbeck will not play Sunday, opening the door for backup Seneca Wallace to get the start. Hasselbeck is currently listed as doubtful on the Seahawks injury report, but sources tell Glazer his ribs need more time to heal.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: If you were hoping to start Hasselbeck this weekend, it is time to look in another direction. Wallace is probably not a great option, he has only 12 career starts with mediocre results, and Chicago is a top 5 overall defense thus far.
According to Rotoworld.com, Houston Texans WR Kevin Walter was upgraded to probable this week after being limited in practice all week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Unless you have a better option, now is as good a time as any to get Walter in your lineup. The Jaguars are not a great defense, ranking in the bottom 1/4 of the league so far, and the Texans are playing at home after finding their offensive swagger last week against the Titans.
JRMRRT: This is good news for Kevin Walter's owners as he produces consistent low end WR2 to high end WR3 numbers when healthy. This is also good news for Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson owners as Walter takes pressure off of them. Hopefully an improved passing attack opens up the running game for Steve Slaton so he can finally become productive too.
According to reports, Broncos rookie RB Knowshon Moreno (groin) was a late addition to the Broncos' injury report on Friday. Moreno is listed as questionable for Sunday's Week 3 match-up against the Raiders.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Hopefully Moreno will be good to go, because the rookie could have that "breakout" game this week against the Raiders. Moreno's workload increased significantly in Week 2 and it would be a shame to see all that momentum come to an immediate stop. I'm going to guess and say that Moreno plays this week, but this situation needs to be monitored plain and simple. Whether he plays or not this weekend, buy-low on Moreno, as his value will only climb as the season moves along!
According to reports, Seahawks WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (back) practiced in full on Friday and is probable for Week 3.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Housh is a decent buy-low candidate right now. He won't be a top 10WR this season, but he could play a lot better than expected down the stretch.
X: With the Seahawks facing a very good Bears defense and Seneca Wallace at the the helm, I don't see a turnaround for Housh this week. He is one of those guys you probably have to play if you own him, but I wouldn't expect a big day.
According to KFFL, Minnesota Viking WR Percy Harvin has missed the last 2 practices on Thursday and Friday with migraines and is questionable for week three.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: WR Percy Harvin is yet again ill with what was reported as migraines, and is questionable for week three against the 49ers. I would guess he will be fine by Sunday but two practices is a lot to miss so check on his status Sunday morning before you start him.
According to Mike Florio of NBCsports, New England Patriots WR Randy Moss is questionable with a back injury and might not play this week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
JRMRRT: It appears that out of the blue Randy Moss missed Fridays practice with a back injury. As usual with the Patriots, there is not much more information as to the exact type or extent of the injury but this definitely warrants close monitoring as Moss is surely fantasy owners #1 WR. Check back for updates before game time as we should have more information.
According to the New Orleans Saints' official website, Lance Moore has been ruled out for this Sunday's game against the Bills.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: I find it hard to believe that Moore would be in anybodies lineup right now...but you never know. Moore is having a tough time so far this year after his (cue your best Carl Spackler voice) "Cinderella Story" last year. Right now aside from Colston, there are no Saints' wide outs that I would start unless it was a really deep league. Just wanted to post this so no one gets Welkered. *cough cough Gambler cough* Interesting side note...if you click on the link you will see that T Jammal Brown is out with a (jip)? Sounds painful!
Gambler: Devery Henderson remains a solid WR3 in that high powered Saints offense and the only WR worth owning outside of Colston in redrafts. Moore was a great story last year but it appears his time has come and gone.
According to San Diego Union-Tribune, Changers RB LaDainian Tomlinson is looking like he will miss week 3 against the Miami Dolphins.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
North End Dirtdogs: The Chargers are probably just playing it safe with LT to get him completely healthy as last season he fought through many injuries and he was hampered for most of the season. Darren Sproles will be the starter again with some Michael Bennett factored in. LT may still have some good games this season, but he will be sharing touches Sproles when he returns and needs to stay healthy. Congrats to dynasty/keeper owners who moved LT this offseason before father time has officially caught up to him.
According to Brian Allee-Walsh of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Mike Bell will be out for 3-4 weeks with a sprained MCL, Pierre Thomas, although practicing fully, looks limited in quickness and speed, and Lynell Hamilton took first-team offensive snaps as recently as Wednesday of this week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
kethnaab: Reggie Bush should be the benefactor in this mess, but with only 17 carries in the first 2 games combined, his limited rushing ability will probably not play heavily in the rushing offense of the Saints. Pierre Thomas should see a noticeably increased workload but the Saints will probably take to the air, like they always do. Bush is at his best when he is receiving rather than rushing, and Pierre Thomas will probably not be sped back into action considering how well the Saints' passing game has been, regardless of who is in or out. Bush looks like a solid fantasy play, Pierre Thomas far less so, at least, not yet.
North End Dirtdogs: I still think Thomas is a good buy low candidate. Bell should be out for a couple of weeks and Thomas is getting close to full health. He should be able to reclaim the starting role soon.
According to reports, Anquan Boldin's hamstring injury is a thing of the past, but Steve Breaston has still been limited in practice due to his knee.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
kethnaab: Steve Breaston has not fully recovered from the injury to his PCL and his practice-time reps have been limited. Against the Colts this week, it is unlikely he will explode in either role as a WR or a returner despite Antrel Rolle demonstrating he is NOT the man for the job. Anquan Boldin's full health only reduces Steve Breaston's value and chances this week.
According to Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News, Justin Tuck has a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. He insists he can play with a shoulder harness, but the NYG have depth along the defensive line and if Tuck plays, it is likely his role will be greatly reduced.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
kethnaab: A partially torn labrum is bad news for Tuck, his fantasy owners, and fans of the NYG, but good news for Tampa, the Chiefs, Oakland and New Orleans, the next 4 NYG opponents. Slight upgrade to Mathias Kiwanuka, the likely benefector of a higher snap count with Tuck sidelined by injury. Also consider a definite downgrade to the NYG DST.
According to reports, Danieal Manning has lost his returner job to Johnny Knox so that Manning's efforts can be focused strictly on defense. Leodis McKelvin has been limited in practice this week due to ankle and fibula issues. Josh Wilson will be out 4 or more weeks with the dreaded high ankle sprain.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
kethnaab: The top 3 darlings of the IDP-returner yardage world were undoubtedly Josh Wilson, Leodis McKelvin, and Danieal Manning. All 3 played prominent roles in their team's base and nickel defenses and all 3 returned kicks. As Josh Wilson proved last season, for return-yardage leagues, these 3 guys were absolute gold. Wilson outscored Patrick Willis and James Harrison in almost all leagues last year that included kick return yardage. As a result, all 3 were "sleeper/shark" type pickups for IDP owners looking to score later in their drafts at defensive back. Now, Wilson will be out for several weeks, if not more, Manning has been replaced entirely by Johnny Knox due to injuries throughout Chicago's defensive backfield, and Leodis McKelvin's only saving grace is that Terrence McGee and Roscoe Parrish have also been limited in practice. Manning is still the most talented (healthy) DB on the Bears' roster, so his value remains, and McKelvin, goat though he may have been against the Pats, is still a fairly solid play. Wilson, however, is out of action, leaving many IDP owners high and dry after his incredible 2008 season.
According to John DeShazier of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Drew Brees trusts Marques Colston " more than he has ever trusted anyone on the field."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: This is a pretty sound endorsement from Brees, who is arguably the top quarterback in fantasy football. So far my boy Colston has 11/128/3 on the season, and he had a slow first game. I have no doubt in my mind that barring injury(of course), Marques will end up with top 5 WR numbers by the end of the season. The other Saints receivers will have their moments….but Colston is the Big Man in the Big Easy. Congratulations on all of you who bought low on him in the off season.
JRMRRT: I have been saying all off season that Colston could finish as the #1 WR in fantasy football this year. If the Saints offense and Drew Brees keep playing like this all season, that could very well become a reality. Colston is a must start every week,(except week 5 which is his bye week) in all formats.
According to Brad Briggs via Twitter, Bears coach Lovie Smith seems committed to get the running game back on track against Seattle by simply stating, "we want to get the running game going this week."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Matt Forte owners have suffered greatly over the last few weeks, and I am feeling the pain first hand. Suffice it to say that Forte should be a great play this week against the Seahawks who gave up huge chunks of yardage against Frank Gore in week two. If Forte has trouble this week, it could be a long season.
According to CBS Sports, RB Adrian Peterson was limited in practice on Wednesday with a "back injury". He was listed on the team's injury report today for the first time this week.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: This doesn't sound like anything too serious for ADP, but it bears keeping an eye on. I would assume that he won't have an issue playing come Sunday, but you never know....stay tuned.
JRMRRT: AP is probable and should be a full go this week. The Vikings are probably just being cautious with their injury reports after the heavy fines handed out to the Jets and Mangini. Obviously start AP if you have him. He has already stated that he is looking forward to playing the 49ers again for some pay back as they shut him down the last time they met. I'm looking forward to watching AP play when he is angry.
According to ESPN, Cowboys RB Marion Barber (quadriceps) still hopes to play in Week 3. This comes after a previous report this morning suggested Barber would miss 1-2 weeks of action.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Obviously there are conflicting reports - We will keep you posted on Barber's Week 3 status! Keep checking back with us.
kethnaab: Everyone says "Felix", I say "Tashard". Choice is of similar build to Marion the Barbarion, and he absolutely lit the Steelers up last season, showing excellent dual threat capabilities. Proceed with caution. Check the injury updates frequently. At least Bum Jr. isn't like Bili Beli. You might actually know MB3s status more than 13 seconds before kickoff.
JRMRRT: Ed Werder, who is a Cowboys' insider, believes Marion Barber is day to day and will be a game time decision this week. This is better news than the original report of him being out 1 to 2 weeks. Too bad the game is on Monday which pretty much excludes Barber from lineups even if he is day to day and not definitely out. Barber has been playing like a stud so hopefully for his owners this injury will not linger.
According to NBC 5 in Dallas, RB Marion Barber is out 1-2 weeks with a quad injury
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: This could be a tough week or two for Barber owners as he was taken with a high draft pick in a lot of leagues....hopefully you have Felix Jones as a handcuff and Tashard Choice should be a popular add off the WW this week. Barber seems to be trying to get the injury risk tag applied to him and is doing a good job. Felix should be in line for some good numbers this week against Carolina as they are allowing 168 yds a game to opposing running backs.
According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Gary Kubiak, head coach of the Houston Texans, seems concerned about Slaton's overall production at the RB position. This includes Slaton's Y.P.C. and newly developed case of the dropsies.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: Steve has faced a couple of good run defenses in the last two weeks so his overall production was bound to dip. However, if he keeps coughing up the ball, he could see his touches reduced. This situation bears watching as Steve was usually drafted at the bottom of the first and top of the second rounds in most drafts. If I was a Slaton owner...I would go to church on Sunday and look for a little "divine intervention" for last years waiver wire gem....he might need it.
Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown rushed the football 24 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns during Monday night's Week 2 loss to the Colts. Ricky Williams carried the ball 19 times for 69 yards in the contest.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: After Brown's monster Week 2 performance, I have to admit, my grin right now is ear to ear. As you will find in Brown's most recent Player Spotlight (soon to post), it's not just that Brown produced, it's how he looked while cranking it all out. Just like in the preseason, Brown looked smooth, powerful and flat-out dominate. His explosion is back, which was already clear during the preseason... if you doubted Brown, shame on you. For those that didn't panic after a mediocre Week 1 outing, great decision making! Last year I screamed at the top of my lungs for fantasy worlds to draft Michael Turner. This year it was Brown. This is why. Enjoy his Week 3 match-up against the Chargers, a run defense that has given up 100 yards rushing in each of the first two weeks. For more on Ronnie Brown, check out the soon-to-post Player Spotlight... I will be adding it ASAP!
kethnaab: 3 times a year, against the worst rushing defenses in the NFL, Ronnie Brown explodes, giving his poor, forlorn fantasy owners false hope. The other 13 weeks, those same downtrodden owners are left wondering "do DARE I start him after his 32-yard performance last week against the Kansas City Chiefs?" All I can say is "1 down, 2 to go". When he's facing a poor defense (or New England), start him. Once he hits his "3 games per season limit", trade high.
According to ESPN, Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck fractured his rib in Sundays game against the 49ers. His status for next weeks game is not certain as of yet.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: This could could be a real blow to the Seahawks if Hasselbeck misses any significant playing time. Seneca Wallace is a real step backwards as far as the QB position goes. Hopefully for all of the Seahawks' skill players Matt makes a speedy recovery and is back on the field soon. Odds are pretty good that Hasselbeck isn't your starter unless you are in a big league, but I would make arrangements to get someone else in your lineup if he is...and not Seneca Wallace...ugh.
According to reports, 49ers RB Frank Gore suffered a right ankle sprain in Week 2, but early reports suggest that Gore should be fine for Week 3. Against the Seahawks in Week 2, Gore ran for 207 yards and two touchdowns on just 16 carries. He also added five catches for 39 yards in the contest.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Gore was a beast in this one. X-rays results will soon follow, but it sounds like he will be fine for Week 3. Gore is a top 10 overall player moving forward.
Joe Divola: This is the Frank Gore that people who have been taking him in the top half of the first round for the last 2 years have been expecting. He has 294 all purpose yards and 4 td's through 2 games. Nice numbers considering I have seen him going in the 2nd round in drafts right before the season. Where as I don't see him continuing this torrid pace…he should continue to put of top 5 numbers especially in PPR leagues. His schedule from week 11-16 consists of GB-JAX-SEA-ARI-PHI-DET…that week 16 matchup against Detroit is looking pretty tasty for your FF Super Bowl.
According to Rotoworld.com, NBC's Peter King is reporting that Eagles QB Donovan McNabb (ribs) is "doubtful" to play Week 3.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Kevin Kolb will start once again if McNabb is unable to play, but Vick will most definitely play in a handful of different packages. Even if McNabb returns, Vick will still play in a handful of packages. Vick isn't ready to start, which is why Kolb will go if McNabb is still out this coming week, but don't count McNabb out yet. He has a ton of time to get healthier and we can definitely see him playing this week when all is said and done.
Giants WR Mario Manningham pulled in 10 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown Week 2. Steve Smith also pulled in 10 passes pulling in 134 yards and a touchdown in the contest. Eli Manning went 25-of-38 for 330 yards, 2TDs and 1 INT.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Manningham is probably already on a roster in most leagues, but if he isn't, he will be the most sought after waiver wire grab heading into Week 3. Steve Smith also had a big game and is a nice pick-up if for any reason he too is available on your waiver wire, but Manningham looks like the real deal. The speedster has a bright future in this league and dynasty owners have to be excited about his rise.
JRMRRT: This is why Manningham was the #1 rated WR going into his combine. Mario is a super talented WR from a big time program at Michigan and if he can get the mental side of the game going like he did this week, he could be a stud. The Giants need a #1 WR and Manningham could be the guy. Pick him up if he is still available.
Titans RB Chris Johnson ran for 197 yards and 2TDs in Week 2 against the Texans. He also caught 9 passes for 87 yards and 1TD.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: What a beast. I still have my concerns about Johnson having a long career (meaning more than 2-3 years more), but who cares as we roll through 2009. Johnson is a big-time talent and can take it house on any carry. He is clearly earning his first-round value already, despite a slow Week 1. Again, I don't see him having a long career given how he runs the ball and given his frame, but again who cares. Johnson is a top five overall talent moving forward into Weeks 3+.
JRMRRT: All I can say is "WOW!". I have had my doubts about Chris Johnson all off-season but I am starting to come around. If Johnson can become a consistent fantasy producer as well as have huge games where he just explodes like this every once in a while he will push Adrian Peterson for the #1 RB spot.
According to reports, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin is active for Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Steve Breaston is also active.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Boldin is a warrior and should be in fantasy line-ups. Breaston we would give a week to get right, but it's nice to see him active.
According to reports, Saints RB Pierre Thomas is active for Sunday's game against the Eagles, but the runner is expected to be limited if he plays.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Mike Bell should once again be a good start this week, but make no mistake about it... this is Thomas' team when he gets back up to speed. Buy-low!
According to reports, Patriots WR Wes Welker is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Get Welker out of your line-ups! Joey Galloway will start in this one and is a decent start this week.
According to reports, the Texans have declared WR Kevin Walter (hamstring) inactive for Week 2.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: No surprise here.
According to reports, the Chiefs have declared RB Jamaal Charles inactive for Week 2.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: This is good news for LJ owners this week, if LJ can even deliver, though. Jackie Battle is the team's No. 2 RB now, monitor his play. He is actually pretty good.
According to reports, the Titans have declared TE Bo Scaife inactive for Week 2.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Jared Cook will start in his place, according to other reports.
According to John Clayton of ESPN, Saints RB Pierre Thomas is active vs. the Eagles. However, he is only expected to play a minimal role with Mike Bell starting.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Like the Dirtdogs, I can't see Thomas being a factor this week and frankly wonder why the Saints are letting him suit up at all. Unless you have a better option, Bell should stay in your lineup today - don't let this news scare you off.
North End Dirtdogs: Good news for Thomas owners that he is healthy enough to play, but he is not worth a start this week. Mike Bell and Reggie Bush will resume their same roles from week 1. Thomas owners ore hoping that Bell struggles today so that he doesn't grasp a firm hold of the starting RB job.
According to the ProFootballTalk.com, Patriots WR Wes Welker is inactive for today's game against the Jets.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Get Welker out of your lineup ASAP. Joey Galloway should see more looks in the passing game this week, as should TE Ben Watson and RB Kevin Faulk.
According to NFL.com, the Buccaneers will be without the services of their no. 1 receiver today as he did not travel with the team to Buffalo. The team could turn to rookie Sammie Stroughter to take his place, but Maurice Stovall and Brian Clark are also in the mix.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: With Bryant out, it will open the door for one of the young guys to potentially shine, but which one is anyone's guess. None of these guys is worth starting this week, but I would expect Michael Clayton to get a few more looks and be a solid play against the Bills.
According to NFL.com, Eagles QB Donovan McNabb (rib) is not ready to play in today's Week 2 outing against the Saints. Kevin Kolb is fully expected to start in McNabb's place today.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Donovan McNabb reportedly made solid progress this week, but it still doesn't look like he will give it a go at home today against the Saints. This is a good sign that McNabb could be ready for Week 3, though. Kolb is not a solid start this week even if you're desperate at the quarterback position. Jeff Garcia, who recently signed with the Eagles, will be the only other passer active in today's game, as Michael Vick is suspended through Week 2. I just say that I wouldn't be all that shocked if things changed just before kickoff, as McNabb is a warrior, but for now it looks like he is a no go.
X: If you were hoping for McNabb as your starter this weekend, it is officially time for plan B – and I don't suggest starting Kolb if you can help it.
According to reports, Colts WR Pierre Garcon is expected to start for the Colts on Monday night.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: With Anthony Gonzalez (knee/PCL) now possibly out for up to two months, rookie Austin Collie should step into the slot while Pierre Garcon slides into the starting line-up. Garcon isn't a good start just yet, and either is Collie, but Garcon is a solid grab in dynasty leagues right now. Dallas Clark will benefit most from the absence of Gonzo, but Garcon could be on the rise. Hank Baskett could see some action in Week 2, but we wouldn't count on him being much use at all this year. As for Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne... expect a monster Week 2. The two should connect for at least one score and Manning should have 2-3 scores himself.
According to PalmBeachPost.com, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano plans to continue spreading the workload around this season. "There is no real star in this bunch of guys," Sparano said. "It has kind of been done by committee here."
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: I'll be the first to admit when it's time to change directions, for example with Thomas Jones. I wasn't a fan heading into this season given his dreaded running back age of 31, but he looked awesome in Week 1 and half of the battle in this game of fantasy football is observing and reacting. Changing directions and knowing how not to just stick to your guns just because you invested in a player... that's being a wise fantasy owner! You need to be able to do that. So is it time to cut ties with Ronnie Brown just because of this news (and his mediocre Week 1 outing)? Absolutely not. Again, I'll admit when I feel I made an inaccurate projection or prediction, but this news only inspires me to buy-low in all of those leagues where I didn't land Ronnie. Look, if you drafted Ronnie this year, you probably drafted him at top 22-27 overall value. I never said for anyone to draft him as a top 5-10RB, because you didn't have to. His value is in that he has 5-10RB upside, but he only cost you a top 22-25 overall pick (if that)... Worst case scenario, I think Brown earns that value at year's end. If you want to know what I still think on this, and what I expect out of Ronnie in the end, check out his most recent Player Spotlight. I touch on all of this.
According to the New York Times, Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez may be out longer than originally thought, possibly up to two months, after spraining ligaments in his knee in last week's game against Jacksonville. The Colts have signed free agent WR Hank Baskett to replace him on the roster.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: Tough break for Gonzo owners, as he may not be back until week 10. On the flip side, Baskett is a guy that bears watching as he could be a sneaky pickup now that he is a Colt.
According to Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, the Oakland Raiders have tabbed RB Michael Bush to be the backup to RB Darren McFadden week two.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: The Raiders take on the Chiefs this week, so both McFadden and Bush could put up some numbers. It appears that McFadden is the number one for now…but Bush could be a nice flex play depending on their schedule (like against the Chiefs). The Ravens ran all over the Chiefs last week, and the running game is the Raiders' strength. I have been a big Bush guy (let's keep it PG please) since he was drafted by the Raiders and I feel that if he can get a shot at the number one gig, he would be a stud. Fargas seems to be on his way out in Oakland and is not even remotely fantasy relevant….
According to SeattleTimes.com, Seahawks WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (back spasms) practiced on Friday and is expected to play in Week 2.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Keep checking back with us on this one. Housh is a tough player to trust right now, so consider other options if you have them. Once Housh is back and fully healthy, he should be a solid fantasy WR2 and an excellent fantasy WR3.
According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, running back Pierre Thomas was limited in practice Friday and is listed as questionable on the team's injury report. The author of the article, Mike Triplett, thinks Thomas is a long shot to play this week since he is not 100 percent yet. If he sits, Mike Bell will again get the bulk of the carries.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
X: The Saints did not miss Thomas at all versus the Lions last week and I agree with the author of this story that there is no reason to play him this week if he isn't fully recovered. Bell will more than likely get the call again and another big performance against the Eagles could signal trouble for Thomas owners.
Gambler: I've been saying for a bit now, Mike Bell is the man to have down in New Orleans. Expect another productive day for Bell on the ground.
According to The Baltimore Sun (via SportsGrumblings.com), Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson has been ruled out for this Sunday's contest against the Baltimore Ravens.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: Looks like Darren Sproles will be in line for the bulk of the carries this week against Ray Lewis and company……I would expect him to be a good start in PPR leagues, as he will see quite a bit of action in the Chargers' passing game, as the rushing yardage may be tough to come by... it looks like father time has caught LD2 with a horse collar tackle and won't let go……
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, NY Jets coordinator Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that Shonn Greene still doesn't have a role in the offense.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: I have to admit, Thomas Jones looked very solid last Sunday, but at the age of 31, he will likely breakdown at some point this season. Until then, though, he won't be losing his job to either Shonn Greene or Leon Washington. I wasn't high on Jones entering this season, as very few runners excel at the age of 31, or play full seasons at a high level... until he gets banged up, though, this is his team. Shonn Greene is the future of that Jets' rushing attack, so dynasty league owners should NOT give up on the idea of Greene eventually turning into a fantasy stud. Greene's rise just might take longer than expected. As you wait, just remember that Greene was number one on the Jets' draft board for rookie runners coming out of that 2009 NFL Draft. If Greene himself stays healthy, his time will come!
North End Dirtdogs: This is understandable as Greene suffered a rib injury towards the end of the preseason and missed some time. However, Thomas Jones still seems to have some gas left in the tank, and Leon Washington is getting the offensive touches he was rumored to. If Greene remains inactive for the next couple of games, take a shot at acquiring him in dynasty formats as his real value might not be seen until next season. He will form a great duo with Washington (assuming he resigns) when Jones moves on next season.
According to Rotoworld, Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle) missed his second straight practice on Thursday and is still wearing a protective boot.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Most everyone expects LT2 to be listed as questionable on Friday's Week 2 injury report. If Tomlinson can't go in Week 2, Darren Sproles and Michael Bennett will split rushing workload. Keep in mind that if LT2 is out for this contest, Philip Rivers could go nuts by default and the team will lean on Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson in the passing game.
According to ESPN's Adam Scheffter, WR Hank Baskett will sign with the Indianapolis Colts to provide some veteran depth with WR Anthony Gonzales going down with a knee injury.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: Hank Baskett was waived by the Eagles recently, and never really made a name for himself in Philly….While Hank Baskett will provide the Colts some depth at the receiver position, I doubt that he will provide us fantasy guys with much production. However, being able to be in the same offense as Peyton Manning is definitely a boost to anyone's value. Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are still the guys to own as week to week starters. If you are in a super deep league and your WR cupboard is barren…he might be worth a shot…but otherwise I wouldn't worry about him.
Saints RB Pierre Thomas fully expects to play in Week 2 and wrote this on his Twitter account: " I've been working hard preparing for week 2. I'm full go Sunday baby! Lets get it!"
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Great news for Thomas owners. Prepare for him to go in Week 2, but definitely keep checking back with us, though. Pierre Thomas' FFX Player Page is the place to be to get everything Pierre Thomas heading into Week 2.
According to reports, even though Saints RB Pierre Thomas (knee) returned to practice fully on Wednesday, Saints beat writer Jeff Duncan does not expect the runner to play in Week 2. "I doubt that he plays," Duncan wrote on his twitter account.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Thomas reportedly had a brace on the knee, but a full practice this early in the week is a great sign if you ask me. Obviously keep checking back with us, but things are looking up. Trade for Thomas now while his value is extremely low. And I say sell-high on Mike Bell before Thomas returns to action. I find it laughable when people suggest that Thomas has already lost his job.
According to cbssports.com, Wayne Weaver, the Jacksonville Jaguars owner, is already considering drafting Tim Tebow at next year's 2010 NFL Draft.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Joe Divola: I wouldn't really call this a vote of confidence for David Garrard. There were rumors before last year's NFL Draft that the Jags were interested in a QB and now this? I am not sold on Tim Tebow becoming a legitimate NFL QB (especially for us fantasy football geeks)…but this is something to store away for next season….especially if Garrard and the Jags falter and don't make the playoffs…again.
According to reports, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday, while receiver Steve Breaston did not. Breason reportedly aggravated his MCL sprain during pre-game warm-ups on Sunday and it is unclear whether or not he will face Jacksonville in Week 3. As for quarterback Kurt Warner, he reportedly suffered a "stinger" in Week 1, but he is not on the team's Wee 2 injury report.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Smitty: Warner and Fitz should bounce-back on Sunday, especially if the Jags get off to an early lead. Arizona has the talent, there is no question about that, but they aren't playing like a playoff team right now, so it wouldn't be shocking if Warner ends up passing his team back into this game in the third and fourth quarters. Fitz should have a big game and Warner should get back to form. I worry about Warner holding up this year, I won't lie, but he should still be a great fantasy QB most weeks when on the field. It's tough to say how Boldin will play this week - Monitor his progress and health as we near Sunday.
Wutthecrapman: Seeing Boldin in practice is a very good sign. He performs at a higher level on game day when he has time to heal. There is no question that the Cards offence is not the same without him. If he’s playing, you start him no question. The loss of Breaston hurts as he can be used as a decent flex play most weeks. The two play a physical team in Jacksonville. Pro Bowler Rashad Mathis will make Warner spread the ball. We may see the running game utilized more this week, ground and pound style, right up Beanie Wells alley.
According to Profootballtalk, Seahawk LeRoy Hill will be out of the lineup though the teams week 7 bye with a "significant groin injury". Hill's injury could also require surgery.
FFX Fantasy Takes:
Gambler: Seattle is picking up where they left off last year with large amounts of injuries to key players. Two offensive linemen, top corner Trufant, and now Hill out for an extended time. If only they could play the Rams every week…
